IN THE CARE OF THE PALLOTTINES

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT - YEAR B 14 MARCH 2021

St Christopher ’s is a Missionary Parish of Intentional Disciples,

passionate about being Christ to all, through our witness of God ’s love in action.

Welcome to St Christopher’s On this fourth Sunday of Lent, we listen to the

gospel where a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a

ruler of the Jews (John 3:1) comes at night to

encounter Jesus, the light that has come into

the world. He comes at night because he still

walks in shadows. And like anyone else whose

eyes are accustomed to the dark, at first the

brilliance of the light blinds him.

He comes because he seeks the truth, and un-

settled as he is, he gradually becomes enlight-

ened as he “encounters” Jesus. That was the

experience of the Samaritan woman at the

well, as well as the man born blind (gospel

passages we have in the A cycle of Lent)…

they gradually came to believe in him. We too

sometimes are in the same boat – we think we

have got it, understood it, but remember St.

John wants us to encounter Christ, not hear a

lesson.

The Gospels exist as tinder for the Spirit. If the

Holy Spirit does not enter the story and con-

found you, then you have done nothing more

than hear the story. You have not encountered

the Lord who lives in and through the story. If

you understand them, if you

are not confused and upset

by them, wondering how you

will reorder your world in

response, then you have

never really heard them,

never heard the Holy Spirit

speak them. Indeed, you

don’t have it until it has you!

A fourth grader celebrated his birthday on crutches, so he couldn't carry the cupcakes into school without help.

His mother asked his bother Noah a sixth grader, to help carry them in.

“I could”, he said, “but I’d prefer not to .”

Spotting a teaching moment, his mother asked Noah, “What would Jesus do?”

Noah answered, “Jesus would heal him so he could carry his own cupcakes.”

In our Bible readings today, Jesus talks about light and darkness. Jesus

said, "Light has come into the world." Do you know what the Light is

that Jesus was talking about? He was talking about himself. In another

place, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will

never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

You might be surprised to know that some people actually choose to walk in

darkness rather than in the light. Can you imagine that? Why would they do

that? Jesus tells us, "Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not

come into the light for fear that their evil deeds will be exposed."

Every day we make choices. If we live by truth, we walk in the light so that it

may be plainly seen. As Jesus said, "Let your light so shine before men, that

they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in

heaven." What choice will you make? Will you walk in the light or in the

darkness?

Dear Lord, help us to make the right choices and walk in the light. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
