Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is in need of
volunteers in order to continue this ministry.
We will be hosting a meet and greet during Donut
Sunday. Please talk with the CLOW volunteers
to see how you can help in this ministry.
LEARNED WISDOM Our first parish grief support series just end-
ed. It was quite well received, and we plan to offer
the gatherings again come April. One universal
thought that came from those participating
though: Please! if you know someone who has suf-
fered a loss, a neighbor or relative or friend, check in
on them frequently. They don't need food or flowers -
they need you. They need to know someone is think-
ing of them, and they still matter! Be brave and take
the initiative to call or stop by. It doesn't matter what
you say, just be there with them, and offer some love!
SPRING SENIOR DINNER We are beginning preparation for our Annual
Spring Senior dinner. This is a dinner celebrating our
parishioners 80 years old and better for their service
to their families, our church, and our community. We
provide dinner, a raffle, and entertainment. Anyone
interested in helping make this a great evening for
our seniors is invited to join us at our planning
meeting. March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Helen Room. as we make arrangements for this event.
Please call Ann Huber at 937-903-2186. If
you have any questions
FROM THE ST. HELEN SCHOOL LIBRARY…. Ohio author, Michelle Houts, will be visiting our school April 8, 9 & 10. She
will present a three-day STEM Science and Writing Lab to grades 1-3, and
will also talk to preschool, kindergarten, and 4th grade classes. Her first novel,
The Beef Princess of Practical County, received the 2010 International Read-
ing Association Children’s Book Award for intermediate fiction, the 2011 Ne-
braska Agricultural Children’s Book of the Year, and was a finalist for the
2010 Buckeye Children’s Book Award and the 2011-12 Indiana Young Hoosi-
er Book Award.
To learn more about Houts, go to https://michellehouts.com. Families will have a chance to order her
books and then have them autographed during her visit. This visit is funded by our fall book fair profits, the Sum-
mer Challenge Award by Vectren, and a generous donation in memory of parishioner Doris Issenmann. Thanks to
everyone who makes it possible for our students to meet and interact with wonderful children’s authors.

LET’S STAY IN TOUCH We are such mobile people – and the
years just keep going by. Perhaps you
have a loved one, a relative or friend
or neighbor, who has moved out of our parish but
would maybe like to hear from us and share updates
now and again? We would love to be in
touch! Please call the parish office with their name
and info, and have them put on our “stay in contact”
list so we can reach out to them once in a while.
And, as always, if your loved one in the area
becomes infirm or ill, and is unable to get out, let us
know that also so we can have someone visit once in
a while or bring Communion. We are blessed to have
wonderful volunteers who minister regularly in this
way.
NEW BOOKS Some terrific, short Scripture
studies as well as other new
books, have been put in the book
kiosk in the church vesti-
bule. Take a look at them! This would be an easy
and inexpensive way to grow in your faith, on your
own time and at home, during Lent!

ST. HELEN CATHOLIC CHURCH
RIVERSIDE, OHIO MARCH 3, 2019
Living Lent 2019 Purposefully
The first readings from Scripture for the season of Lent offer us repeated examples of God’s
faithfulness and our need to hope and trust in God. Paul entreats us to live as followers of
Christ. And the Gospels give us beautiful stories of “climbing the holy mountain of Easter.”
Jesus is tempted by the devil and he is transfigured. He calls us to bear fruit, to forgive even
terrible wrongs, and not to “cast stones.” For our Lenten “take home” this
year, then, along with the Little Black Books and other prayer resources, we
offer two additional tools to help each of us be mindful of these things as we,
too, climb the holy mountain of Easter:
A wallet or pocket card and a cross to take on our “journey,”
both reminding us to hope in the Lord.
Ash Wednesday, March 6, and Good Friday, April 19, are days of abstinence from meat
and also days of fast, that is, days limited to a single full meal. With regard to Good Friday,
the teaching of the Second Vatican Council should be recalled. "Let the paschal fast be kept
sacred. Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged
throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be attained
with uplifted and clear mind." Constitution on the Liturgy, No 110. The other Fridays of the
season of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics 14
years and older. The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their
59th birthday (canons 97 and 1252).
WHAT IS GOD INVITING ME TO CHANGE THIS LENT?
What would help me grow in freedom? That's the question to ask. For some of us, it
could be, committing ourselves to give up judging others, every single day of Lent. For oth-
ers, it could be giving up a bad habit we've developed. For still others, it is obvious what
seems to be the important choice for me during Lent.
For many of us, the choice may not be to give something up, but to add something
to our daily lives during Lent. We may commit ourselves to extra prayer time. We may de-
cide to do some service to the poor, once a week during Lent. We may choose to increase our
almsgiving to the poor - perhaps related to something we choose not to do, e.g., some might
choose not to go out to eat one night a week, and to give that total amount to the poor. Wheth-
er it is fasting, abstaining, or other acts of penance, the whole desire we should have is to
use these means to help us grow closer to our Lord and prepare ourselves "to celebrate
the paschal mystery with minds and hearts renewed." (First Preface of Lent) May our
Lord bless us all on this journey ahead. http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Lent/fast-
