Dear Sisters and Brothers, If you put a plant in the window, its leaves will turn toward the light. There is something in the plant that recognizes that life cannot survive without light. No wonder that light is a universal sym-bol for the power of God. The whole of human life is a journey toward the light of God.

In our first reading, the prophet Isaiah announced that the Light of the World has come. Darkness covered the earth like thick clouds in the middle of the day. But the glory of the Lord bursts through those thick clouds in shining radiance. The ancient world believed that the star you were born under shaped your whole life. It’s no wonder that the early church taught that Jesus was born under a new star. His life was unlike any other life in human history. He brought the very light of God into the darkness of our human world. Think about the wise men’s journey. Out of all the billions of stars in the sky, they followed the new star that brought them to Christ. Out of all the great religious teachers under heaven, Christ is the one “star” who draws us out of dark-ness into the light.

FEAST OF FAITH The Liturgy of Emmanuel

The assembly has gathered from near and far, on foot, by bus, by car, by subway, singly and by twos and threes: single people, couples, families. Now that move-ment is ritualized and made visible in the liturgy’s en-trance procession. We are not alone on this journey; Christ is with us. The procession is led by the cross, with the image of Christ upon it. Candles, signs of a living presence, are carried around the cross. Candles also accompany the Book of the Gospels, another sign of Emmanuel, God-with-us. The priest presider is likewise a sign of Christ’s presence in our assembly; he will act in persona Christi, in the person of Christ, who presides at every Eucharist. As the procession begins, we stand and sing to-gether in our first act as a community. The joining of our voices begins to turn many into one. The songs we sing range from ancient chants to contemporary hymns, but they have the same purpose, to foster our unity and turn our thoughts to the mysteries we gather to celebrate. We may feel that we can’t sing well, but “Christ always in-vites us to enter into song, to rise above our own preoccu-pations, and to give our entire selves to the hymn of his Paschal Sacrifice” (USCCB, Sing to the Lord, 14). —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. January 1, Feast of Mary, Mother of God

Today’s second reading reminds us that through Christ we have been delivered from the law and become sons and daughters of God. New Year’s Day provides a perfect opportunity to ask ourselves the question: Does my life reflect my gratitude for all that my loving Father has given me? If not, how can a live a life of gratitude? January 2, 2011Epiphany of Our Lord

“Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” - Matthew 2:11

The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to embrace. Each of us is called to open our gifts before Jesus, offering Him what He needs. The gifts we bring – our time and service and some share of what we earn for the work we do – are equally precious in His sight. We can remember that we are called to share our gifts by keeping one of the Magi from our Nativity set on our desk or dresser as a year-round a reminder to bring our gifts to Jesus. A Steward Among Us I was born with a “curiosity gene.” I love to wonder about and to investigate all that is “seen and unseen.” Thank you, Deacon Charlie, for giving me the chance to explore my faith with the Adult Faith Formation Committee. Getting to suggest topics and speakers with your guidance, and coming to the parish talks and prayer groups deepened and enriched my faith. Highlights for me were learning meditation techniques with Br. Camillus a while back and just recently reflecting on Vatican II with Andrew Kirschman, S.J. Thank you, also, Charlie, for your bulletin messages that gave me much to think and pray about.

Missy Davey, Adult Faith Formation Committee

Due to “Holiday Printing Schedules”, the Sunday first collections for December 12, 19,26, January 2 will be reported in next weekend’s bulletin.

PEOPLE OF LIFE

"For a long time, it seemed to me that life was about to begin...real life.

But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first,

some unfinished business, time still to be served , a debt to be paid.

THEN life would begin. At last, it dawned on me

that these obstacles were my life."

Sharing the Joy of Christmas During a Homebound ministry meeting, Fr. Ian mentioned it would be nice to have the homebound ministers pick a care home and coordinate carolers to bring holiday cheer. Merrill Gardens was sug-gested. Thank you to Maureen Tiffany and Janet Sul-livan Whitaker for helping us tune our voices in preparation for the event, while Bianca Ocampo played the piano. The children eagerly sang, many residents sang loud with joy, some sat with a twin-kle in their eye and some just smiled. The joy of Christmas was definitely in the room while we sang his many blessings and shared homemade cookies and punch.
