The Pastor’s Corner

THE 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 23, 2020

FROM FR. CONNEALY

Happy Sunday! This week is one of my favorites in the liturgical calendar. We have a wonderful line up of saints’ feast days and memorials. Tomorrow, the 24th, is the Feast of St. Bartholomew, Apostle. The 25th is St. Louis of France. And on the 27th and 28th, we celebrate St. Monica and St. Augustine, respectively. While much can be said about all of these saints, I’d like to draw your attention to St. Louis, who ruled as King of France. In the Office of Readings for his memorial we read a letter he wrote to his son as a spiritual testament. “My dearest son, my first instruction is that you should love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your strength. Without this there is no salvation. Keep yourself, my son, from everything that you know displeases God; that is to say, from every mortal sin. You should permit yourself to be tormented by every kind of martyrdom before you would allow yourself to commit a mortal sin. If the Lord has permitted you to have some trial, bear it willingly and with gratitude, considering that it has happened for your good and that perhaps you well deserved it. If the Lord bestows upon you any kind of prosperity, thank him humbly and see that you become no worse for it, either through vain pride or anything else, because you ought not to oppose God or offend him in the matter of his gifts. Listen to the divine office with pleasure and devotion. As long as you are in church, be careful not to let your eyes wander and not to speak empty words, but pray to the Lord devoutly, either aloud or with the interior prayer of the heart. Be kindhearted to the poor, the unfortunate and the afflicted. Give them as much help and consolation as you can. Thank God for all the benefits he has bestowed upon you, that you may be worthy to receive greater. Be just to your subjects, swaying neither to right nor left, but holding the line of justice. Always side with the poor rather that with the rich, until you are certain of the truth. See that all your subjects live in justice and peace, but especially those who have ecclesiastical rank and who belong to religious orders. Be devout and obedient to our mother the Church of Rome and the Supreme Pontiff as your spiritual father. Work to remove all sin from your land, particularly blasphemies and heresies. In conclusion, dearest son, I give you every blessing that a loving father can give a son. May the three Persons of the Holy Trinity and all the saints protect you from every evil. And may the Lord give you the grace to do his will so that he may be served and honored through you, that in the next life we may together come to see him, love him and praise him unceasingly. Amen.” Have a great week and know of my prayers!

In Christ,

Fr. Connealy

LA ESQUINA DEL PASTOR

EL 21º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 23 de AGOSTO 2020

DE PADRE CONNEALY

¡Feliz domingo!

BECOMING CHRISTIAN Initiation for Adults—What is it?

For Christians, initiation means falling in love with

Jesus and living as His disciples. Through the process of becoming Catholic we try to help people

learn how to respond to God’s call for their everyday lives.

The way we learn to do this is by hanging out with

Catholics and actually doing what Catholics do. The process of becoming Catholic is about entering into a way of life as an apprentice learns from a Master and

that Master’s community.

Jesus is our Master and becoming Catholic is a lot like being His apprentices. The process for this

apprenticeship into the Christian way of life is called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (often called

RCIA). It involves encountering the Word of God in the Christian community, worship and prayer

and serving others.

If you are interested in becoming Catholic and responding to God, call or contact

WHY SHOULD I BE AN ADORER There are many reasons! Most importantly is to visit

and spend time with Our Lord Jesus Christ who is ever present in the Holy Eucharist (also called the

Blessed Sacrament). Like any relationship, what we put in is what we will get back and our Lord is not

outdone in generosity! As a committed adorer you also have the amazing responsibility to keep the Lord

not only company but also safe in the Adoration Chapel Coming to adoration is a perfect way to draw ever closer to Jesus and to intensify our spiritual life. For more information, please call Desiree Schlangen at 763.807.7015 or [email protected]
