21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 22, 2021

FROM OUR PAROCHIAL VICAR

Hello,

File this under “Getting to know Fr. Vietor Better.” I like to read literature. This probably goes back to my being an English major in college, and this probably goes back to my boyhood when I first developed a love for reading. Every day I try to get in a few pages at least. I find it relaxing and invigorating to make my way through a good book. Recently I started a walloping new book called In Search of Lost Time. It is actually six fat volumes, so this will keep me busy for quite some time. It is by a Frenchman named Marcel Proust and so I am reading a translation in English, but it is still very well done. I read it once before and thought it was worth doing again.

There are several major themes in the book and one of them is memory. This is why I am bringing this up, because memory is a major theme of our faith as well. We read the scriptures and we remember what Jesus said and did. In a bigger picture; our whole faith is a remembrance of what happened back then. Especially in the Eucharistic prayer, we remember. There is actually a special word for this – anamnesis. It is the opposite of amnesia; it is not-amnesia, or remembering. When in the Eucharist we remember the words our Lord said at the last supper, we are transported back in time. We are really there. This powerful type of remembering – anamnesis – literally brings us back to the time and place. It is a sharing in our Lord’s sacrifice to the Father.

When I read, then, it is also for this purpose: to connect more closely with the Gospel and all the teachings of our faith. If anything, reading helps me understand human nature better, and then I can understand better how Jesus meets our nature and speaks to us. So my recreation, my hobby, leads me back to the faith. I hope it will be the same for you. We all need some recreation, not necessarily reading literature, but something. Whatever it is, though, we can look for connection points with our faith. We can see how the truth enters into all things. We can be built up even in our spare time. Especially on Sunday, the day set aside to be holy to the Lord, let us find some good recreation that brings us back to the faith and builds us up in the Lord.

God bless

Fr. Vietor

XXI DOMINGO DE TIME ORDINARIO 22 DE AGOSTO 2021

DEL VICARIO PARROQUIAL

Hola, Archívelo bajo “Conociendo al P. Vietor Mejor ". Me gusta leer literatura.
