Youth Group The next mee"ng is on December 2 at 6 PM in the REC. All 6-12th graders are invited to take some "me to come together with peers for faith, food, and fun. The more, the merrier! Youth Mass The next Youth Mass will be December 9th, at 6 PM in the REC. All are welcome!

November is a BUSY month across the board. While the Youth Group will not be mee"ng, there are s"ll events that our Youth will be par"cipa"ng in. Bereavement Group

Because Thanksgiving falls a day a$er the 3rd Wednesday this year, the Bereavement group had decided that it is best to move the mee"ng "me to the 2nd Wednesday in the month of November only. So, the Bereavement mee"ng will be on November 14 at 10:00 AM in St. Michael Room. With holidays approaching, it is an especially difficult "me for those who grieve. Day of the Dead Dia de los Muertos

During the week of November 1, the Spanish classes observed “El Dia de los Muertos.” As part of the cultural experience, the grades from fourth to eighth were in charge of crea"ng an element to place on the altar. In addi"on, students learned about the four elements on the altar that date back to Mesoamerica, when the Mayas and Aztecs created similar “Ofrendas” (offerings) for their loved ones. Today, these elements remain part of a culture that embraces Catholicism without forge`ng inherited tradi"ons. The students truly enjoyed their immersion experience. They had a chance to taste “Pan de Muerto” and add their personal touch to a Calavera”(skull) mask that they wore during part of their class. Students also took this opportunity to honor family, friends and pets who are no longer with us. They placed pictures of these departed members on the altar.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is celebrated annually in the United States on November 11. SKDS students will honor our veterans on Monday, November 12, with a program in the school gym at 10 AM. Addi"onally, prior to Veterans Day, we will visually recognize veterans who are close to our students’ and families’ hearts. This will be done by wri"ng the name of a veteran on a paper star. These stars will be posted on the wall in the office hallway. Each family was given three paper stars and asked to write the name of a veteran on each star. If more stars are desired to honor veterans special to the family, the office can be contacted. This is one small way to honor those who have given so much to protect our freedoms.

Conferences are right around the corner. We hope every family is excited to be present for the conference scheduled for their child. We rely on their help as we strive to provide the very best for our students. We are partners in this educa"onal endeavor, so family presence is vital. Our faculty and staff spend long hours in prepara"on for conferences; they view this "me spent with family and child as essen"al to the academic, social and emo"onal growth of each child.

In many grades, the child is asked to lead the conference. It is only Pre-school, 4K, and 5K children who are not expected to a%end the scheduled conference.

We hope conferencing with the teachers will provide an opportunity to discuss the special talents and concerns of each child. The child is, in part, responsible for his/her educa"on. The older the child, the more responsible s/he is expected to be. Conferences will provide each student an opportunity to begin accep"ng responsibility for his/her educa"on. Three-way conferencing lets the student give input just as it does the teacher and family. This type of conferencing also helps the student recognize that home and school are working together for his/her benefit and helps keep the lines of communica"on open for all involved.

The Mystery of the Catholic Church” Though Jesus saves us as individuals, he calls us to live out our salva"on as members of a communion of believers. But that can be hard if we don't understand what the Church is and what it is meant to be. Why does the Church claim to have authority over what Catholics believe? How do we reconcile both the divinity and humanity of the Church that Christ himself created? Why is the Church essen"al to the life of every believer? Women’s Christmas: An Epiphany Retreat for Wise Women

Epiphany (January 6) is the day we celebrate the coming of the Wise Men to the infant Jesus. In some parts of the world, Epiphany is celebrated as "Women's Christmas." Origina"ng in Ireland, Women's Christmas began as a day when the women, who o$en carried the domes"c responsibili"es all year, took Epiphany Day as an occasion to enjoy a break and celebrate together at the end of the holidays.

On January 5, we are bringing together the Feast of the Epiphany in A Women's Christmas: An Epiphany Celebra"on for Wise Women. You are invited to leave behind your busyness for a few hours to enjoy the companionship of other women. We will share a simple luncheon together, listen and reflect on each other's wisdom and gi$s, and create our own mandala star. You will leave feeling gi$ed and blessed. The Dodge County Food Pantry at St. Vincent de Paul recently ended our fiscal year. Over the last 12 months we served an average 256 households per month (497 adults and 277 children). Your con"nued support has made it possible for us to con"nue our mission of addressing the hunger needs in Dodge County. At this "me we are in need of peanut bu%er, jelly, cereal, individual oatmeal, pasta, soup, and spaghe` sauce. Monetary dona"ons are also accepted, which helps us purchase meat. Red Kettle Ringers Needed

The Human Concerns Commi%ee invites you to ring the bells for the Salva"on Army Ke%le at Shopko on Friday, December 7 or on Friday, December 14. Individuals or family members can volunteer for one hour from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on either date. The bell ringing is done inside the front door and is sheltered from the cold. F!# !"# R$%&$'()!*

An end to the Gate keepers We all know the dynamic and some"mes we are guilty of it – maintaining control of access to something. Some"mes it is room availability or access to a person. In our Gospel reading the gatekeepers are usually maintaining control of God’s grace. Last weekend we heard of the first commandment including full love of God and our neighbor as ourselves as being greater than any ritual sacrifice. This week we see this in ac"on as a synagogue official is making a great show of his sacrifice with lengthy and loud prayers. Jesus observes a widow contribu"ng a few cents quietly and no"ced the devo"on as she gave all that she had. She has full access to God without money or posi"on but purely from her love and devo"on. Over our lives we can con"nue to improve to be like the Saints who learned how to give their all. We might start by learning our prayers and improve to praying three "mes a day. We gradually improve to standing up to bullies and working at food pantries. With the aid of the Holy Spirit we are capable of devo"ng every moment and breath to the other. We are never perfect but our devo"on can con"nue to grow. Let us con"nue to pray for our confirma"on candidates who are living a year of service to God through the church and the poor. They are old enough to have friends who are watching them do this which can add the barrier of being self-conscious. But they can grow like the rest of us to dance like no one is watching as we love God especially in the faces of the people around us and the poor. On this Veteran’s Day, we pray also for all of the people who have served our country by commi`ng themselves en"rely for our good. We thank them for their devo"on and commit to caring for them and their families.

Un final para los guardianes de la puerta Todos conocemos la dinámica y, en ocasiones somos culpables de la misma: mantener el control del acceso a algo. A veces es disponibilidad de habitación o acceso a una persona. En nuestro Evangelio, la lectura de los guardianes generalmente man%ene el control de la gracia de Dios. El fin de semana pasado, escuchamos del primer mandamiento que incluye el amor pleno de Dios y de nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos como algo más grande de cualquier sacrificio ritual. Esta semana vemos esta acción cuando un oficial de la sinagoga está haciendo una gran demostración de su sacrificio con oraciones largas y Fuertes. Jesús observa una viuda que contribuye unos pocos centavos en silencio y se dio cuenta de la devoción como ella dio todo lo que tenía. Ella %ene acceso total a Dios sin dinero ni posición, sino únicamente por su amor y devoción. A lo largo de nuestras vidas podemos con%nuar mejorando para ser como los Santos que aprendieron a dar todo. Podríamos comenzar por aprender nuestras oraciones y mejorarlas y poder orar tres veces al día. Mejoramos gradualmente para enfrentarnos a los agresores y trabajar en las despensas de alimentos. Con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo somos capaces de dedicar cada momento y dar aliento al otro. Nunca somos perfectos, pero nuestra devoción puede seguir creciendo. Con%nuemos orando por nuestros candidatos a la confirmación que viven un año de servicio a Dios a través de la iglesia y los pobres. Tienen la edad suficiente para que los amigos que los observan hagan lo mismo, lo que puede agregar la barrera de ser conscientes de sí mismos. Pero pueden crecer como el resto de nosotros para bailar como nadie estén mirando mientras amamos a Dios, especialmente en los rostros de las personas que nos rodean y de los pobres. En este Día de los Veteranos, oramos también por todas las personas que han servido a nuestro país comprome%éndose totalmente por nuestro bien.
