ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

6 pm Saturday; 7:45 & 10 am Sunday

The Twentieth Sunday after Trinity

16/17 October 2021

Jesus Invites Us to His Wedding Feast to Receive Abundant

Righteousness: The Holy Spirit sounds forth the Gospel call: “See, I have

prepared my dinner ... Come to the wedding feast” (Matt. 22:1–14). But

many reject this invitation in favor of worldly pursuits. And so the call goes

out to others, both the good and the bad. For the wedding invitation is not

based on the qualifications of those invited but on the basis of the merits and

work of Christ. The feast is free: “He who has no money, come, buy and

eat...delight yourselves in rich food.” (Is. 55:1–9). Those rejecting the

Spirit's work shall experience God's wrath and judgment. Those who are not

clothed in Christ's righteousness shall be cast into outer darkness where

there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Let us therefore seek the Lord

while He may be found, for He will have mercy upon us. Let us redeem the

time, being filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always for all things to God

the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:15–21).

HOLY COMMUNION for our Guests and Visitors

Today the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood is given for us Christians to

eat and to drink. At St. Paul this Sacrament is given to those baptized

Christians who have been examined and absolved and publicly confess the

faith professed at this altar. All guests who are members of sister

congregations of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and desire to receive

the Body and Blood of Christ are asked to speak with the Pastor prior to

communing.

Service of the Word

Introit Ps. 48:1, 9-11; antiphon: Liturgical Text

The Lord is righteous in all he has | done to us,*

for we have not obeyed his com- | mandments.

Glorify your name, | O Lord;*

and deal with us according to your great | mercy.

Great is the Lord and greatly | to be praised*

in the city of our God, his holy | mountain.

We have thought on your steadfast love, | O God,*

in the midst of your | temple.

As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends | of the earth.*

Your right hand is filled with | righteousness.

Let Mount Zion | be glad!*

Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your | judgments!

Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*

and to the Holy | Spirit;

as it was in the be- | ginning,*

is now, and will be forever. | Amen.

The Lord is righteous in all he has | done to us,*

for we have not obeyed his com- | mandments.

Glorify your name, | O Lord;*

and deal with us according to your great | mercy.

Kyrie & Gloria in Excelsis page 186-189

Salutation and Collect of the Day page 189

O Lord, grant to Your faithful people pardon and peace that they may be

cleansed from all their sins and serve You with a quiet mind; through Jesus

Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy

Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 55:1–9

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no

money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and

without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,

and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and

eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and

come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an

everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. Behold, I made him

a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. Behold,

you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know

you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of

Israel, for he has glorified you. “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call

upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the

unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have

compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my

thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the

Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher

than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Gradual Ps. 145:15-16

The eyes of all | look to you,*

and you give them their food in due | season.

You open | your hand;*

you satisfy the desire of every | living thing.

Anthem: Joyful Are They that Come with Singing – G. F. Handel

Epistle Reading Ephesians 5:15–21

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the

best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish,

but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine,

for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in

psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the

Lord with all your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the

Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of

reverence for Christ. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

The Alleluia & Verse page 190

Out of the depths I cry to | you, O LORD!

O Lord, | hear my voice!

Alleluias repeated Ps. 130:1-2a

Holy Gospel Reading Matthew 22:1–14 P C

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 22nd chapter.

Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

Again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven

may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, and sent

his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they

would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are

invited, See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have

been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’ But

they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business,

while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.

The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers

and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is

ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and

invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went

out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So

the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to look

at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said

to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And

he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and

foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping

and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

teachers, and anyone who wants to help support our school for a quick

Auxiliary meeting! If you signed up on the volunteer list at the back to

school night, you can get all the info you need to do those upcoming jobs

here! We will definitely dismiss prior to choir practice.

Hymn of the Day – The hymn of the day for the Twentieth Sunday after

Trinity is We Are Called to Stand Together (LSB 828). It was written by

Martin Leckebusch who was born in Leicester, Great Britain, in 1962 and

educated at Oriel College, Oxford and Brunel University. He has belonged

to various protestant denominations and has authored hundreds of hymns.

The first stanza of We Are Called to Stand Together connects us to the saints

of old. We are all part of the one holy, catholic church through faith in Jesus

Christ who has fulfilled all the promises and hopes of the patriarchs and

prophets. Stanzas two and three trace the beginnings of the apostolic church,

starting with the apostles themselves whom Jesus calls to follow him and

see his life, death, and resurrection first hand. The apostles, and the pastors

who come after them, spread Christ abroad throughout the whole world, and

it is the Holy Spirit who guides and leads them. Stanza four speaks about the

results of the message of Christ going out to the corners of the world:

millions of people brought to repentance and faith in Christ through the

faithful preaching of the gospel. Stanza five spurs us on to always be ready

to give a defense for the hope that is in us. We are to show the love of Christ

to others until he comes again to unite us all in his heavenly kingdom.

Shut-in of the Month – Please help us remember those who are unable to

worship with us here in church. The St. Paul shut-in of the month for

October is Lillian Schmidt. Her address is: Lillian Schmidt, Riverside Rehab

& Healthcare, 3490 Humbert Road, Alton, IL 62002. Please send her a card,

a note, or have your kids color a picture for her. The St. Paul shut-ins love

to get mail!

Metro-East Lutheran High School – is happy to announce its Night of

Knights Annual Auction will be an in-person event again this year. The

auction will be held on Friday, November 5, at the Gateway Convention

Center in Collinsville. All are invited to join us! Donations are currently

being accepted for auction items. All donations can be dropped off at the

school office. Thank you for your support of what is our biggest fundraiser

of the year.

Food Pantry – In September the pantry served 17 families. This included

35 adults and 29 children with no new families. Right now the pantry is

low on corn and green beans, canned fruit, sugar, flour, syrup, tomatoes,

baked beans, pie filling (for Thanksgiving), evaporated milk, coffee, rice,

shampoo, and laundry and dish detergent. Thank you very much for your

continuing support. It is much appreciated!

Weekly Bach Cantatas – Lutheran Public Radio streams an appointed Bach

Cantata uninterrupted at 1 pm and 8 p.m. Central on Sundays. This week’s

cantata will be BWV 180 “Adorn Yourself, O Soul.” You can listen

at lutheranpublicradio.org, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomePod

and on the LPR mobile app.

Isaiah 55:2 – “Why do you spend your money for that which is not

bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?” What Isaiah says

here is reminiscent of what Jesus says about putting our earthly wealth in

places where “moth and rust destroy.” Where we put the money God has

given us to manage says a lot about the way in which we actually view life.

What do your spending priorities say about what you think is truly important

in life?

CATECHISM LEARN-BY-HEART: Catechism Lesson: 2nd Article of Apostles’ Creed – Redemption

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was

buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He

ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From

thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father

from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has

redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins,

from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His

holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His

own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting

righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he is risen from the dead, lives

and reigns to all eternity.

This is most certainly true.

Bible Verse: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory

as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Luke the physician to be an evangelist and physician of the soul. Grant that the

our souls that with willing hearts we may ever love and serve You; through Jesus

Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one

God, now and forever. Amen.

Tue-Wed (20th Sunday after Trinity) – O Lord, grant to Your faithful people

pardon and peace that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve You with a

You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
