    FAQs -What is the Youth Volunteer Corps Summer of Service?Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) is a program of Volunteer Southern Arizona that engages youth ages11-18 in meaningful service learning projects in the Greater Tucson area. Projects are led byAmeriCorps members and impact community issues such as education, emergency preparedness,environment, health, and leadership. This summer holds eight weeks of intensely meaningful andfun-packed service projects. These projects generally take place Monday through Thursday from9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

    -How much does it cost?YVC summer projects have a registration fee of $100. There are full and partial scholarshipsavailable.

    -How do I get involved?You can start by coming to our summer registration event on May 12, 2012! The event will take placeat 3130 N. Dodge Blvd. and will start at 10:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM. Be sure to arrive early forguaranteed registration in the project that interests you most! At the event, you will learneverything you will need to know about our summer service projects. If you miss our registrationhave no fear! You can visit Volunteer Southern Arizona at 3130 N.     Want to lend a hand to a family in need? Well, here is your chance! Help build a new, stable home for those inneed. Be a part of a group that has housed over 2 million people in over 500,000 decent, affordable homes. Comehelp build a home, help a family, and learn new skills!

    Challenge your perceptions and discover the diversity inTucson by helping at three local organizations that serveminority groups. At Desert Ashram (a universalmonestary, meditation, and retreat center) we will bebuilding a garden. We will go from creating a peacefulenvironment to creating peace for people living with HIV/AIDS. TIHAN, Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network, willshow us how to make HIV/AIDS ribbons, origami cranes,and care packages for those who are living with

    HIV. Our final day will be spent with YWCA working intheir garden.

    Be a caring companion and discover how easy it can beto brighten the day of a senior citizen! We will spend theweek at Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging whereyou will meet the amazing people. Kick off the week bygetting to know the residents at a carnival themed partycomplete with face painting and treats! Each day you willinteract with the residents in new and exciting ways- helpthem make mosaic flower pots, play pool, bingo andmore! By the end of the week, you will have the chance

    to perform a creative piece for residents who areexperiencing the early signs of memory loss. If you have apassion for caring, then this project is for you.

    Do you love being outdoors and getting your hands dirty? Come join us in the Sunnyside NeighborhoodAssociation Community Garden! Plant some veggies and get active with us as we learn basic gardeningtechniques. By helping in the garden, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped families inthe Sunnyside neighborhood gain access to healthy foods! We will also create artwork for the garden andlearn about recycling.

    Arizona turned 100 this year! Celebrate your state andyour community by learning about Arizona's history andworking in and around Tucson's great museums. We willvisit the Arizona Historical Society Museum at the U of A,viewing the exhibits, learning how history is preservedand taught and take care of some artifacts of our own.We will also spend time at the Fort Lowell Museum,

    where a park clean up might just lead to a treasure hunt;hint, hint. Make a little of your own history this summer!

    Water in Tucson?! We sure do have it! Learn how toharvest it and conserve it. Spend a week with REALMEnvironments and University of Arizona CooperativeExtension as we learn all different techniques, both in-door and outdoor, then finish the week off by paintingand installing cisterns! Learn about healthy food and be apart of a new farm!

Casa de los Ninos provides a safeenvironment for children who have been abused,neglected or at-risk. Join us as we lead an animalthemed day camp experience for children whodeserve it. We will learn about and play with insects,interact with animals from the Desert Museum, takea trip to the zoo, and so much more!

    Interested in exploring Colossal Cave MountainPark? Well heres your chance! Come explore thepark by helping with trail maintenance, removingbuffelgrass, and helping with the gardens. ColossalCave Mountain Park preserves our naturalresources and native plants and animals. Dont missout on this educational and interesting adventurewhere we get to tour the cave for free!

    Take charge of the gardens and trails throughoutTohono Chul Park. Enjoy the outdoors whilehelping to preserve the parks environment. Wewill be helping with trail maintenance, doing somegardening, and making sure Tohono Chul Park cancontinue to be beautiful. We will celebrate ourprogress at the end of the week with an invitationout to all the parents for a small party.

    Home sweet home is not something that mostpeople have to worry about, but for some people,they can't go home. Lend a hand to refugees byharvesting and canning fruits or vegetables andcelebrating the cultures that have come to the US.With the International Rescue Committee and Iska-shitaa, learn about refugees in Tucson and how toharvest wild food in your community. Celebratewith new friends at a Welcome Party at the end of

    the week!

    Earthquake! Fire! Tsunami! Oh, my! Curious about howTucson responds to an emergency? Take a week with theTucson Police Department, Rural/Metro Fire, and the

    Red Cross to learn all about Tucsons disaster relief.Youll spend some time touring a fire truck andambulance, getting a first-hand look at how the RedCross prepares for an emergency, and youll round outthe week teaching the youngsters at House of NeighborlyService what you learned. Safety first!

    Come out and get hands on helping at Jumpin Jack Ranchwith Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary. The horsesthere have spent most of their lives being mistreated, butnow they have a safe place to live. Were going to helpthis organization by mucking corrals (picking up poop),cleaning water troughs and horse equipment, weeding,working on their garden, and most importantly, providingthe horses with positive human interaction so they canlearn to trust again. You will receive safety training sothat you can be around the horses.

    Neighborhood clean up, remove buffelgrass, teachresidents about safety in their neighborhood bywriting an e-newsletter, and lots more!

    Are you in to sports, exercise or eating healthy?Come join us at House of Neighborly Services aswe teach young children about active and nutritiouslifestyles! Help build an obstacle course for thechildren, cook a healthy snack with them, and teachthem what it really means to be healthy. We willcelebrate your service with some water balloonaction on the last day!
