Spots still open for National Disaster Response Conference

Registration is still open for this year’s National Disaster Response Conference, “Deliver Us from Evil: God at Work in Disaster,” to be held Oct. 6-9 at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.

The free, annual conference is open to LCMS pastors, seminarians, deaconesses, district disaster-response coordinators and anyone who is interested in disaster response. The conference schedule includes case studies from recent disasters in Pilger, Neb.; Washington, Ill.; Delmont, S.D.; and Colorado, as well as presentations from those who have responded to disasters. Among presenters are LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, who will address “Löhe on Mercy,” and Dr. Beverly Yahnke, executive director for Christian Counsel with DOXOLOGY: The Lutheran Center for Spiritual Care and Counsel, whose banquet presentation, “London Bridge is Falling Down: Child-Size Trauma,” will focus on caring for children. The conference also will feature a “Q&A” with church leaders who have experienced a disaster.

Council Meeting – July 20, 2015

Present: Pastor, Ed Sitler, Doyle Boese, Keith Balla, Dave Antolick, Joan Sitler, Joan Pignataro President Ed Sitler called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm. Pastor opened with prayer. Motion to accept the past meeting minutes as presented. Sitler, Pignataro; Motion passed.

Endowment – Keith Balla See attached report. Elder’s – Joan Sitler The Elders did not meet again since the last Council meeting due to summer vacations. The next scheduled Elder’s meeting is scheduled for September 14, 2015.

Call meeting Committee – Joan Sitler Currently finalizing the Congregational self-evaluation tool. We will meet again on August 18 to discuss the final draft. Talked about a Pastoral assistant. We are trying to get a part time person 6-8 hours a week at Zion. Funding for this would be from the SELC District for Pastoral Assistance. Stewardship –Roseann McKenney There will be a 3 week bible study on Stewardship. Christian Education – Submitted by Faith Dzurovick Vacation Bible School approx. 60 children were registered.

Property Management –Todd Felter Driveway still needs repairs. The scouting father who is helping with this is currently on vacation. They were told that this week after 12:30 the lot is available and all of the following week. Pastor will follow up with the scout again. Striping is needed as soon as possible. Pastor will speak to Bill Horner about repairing roof shingles.

“We often use the word hero, and in this case I know that word has never been more appropriate,” Hartley said in the AFNS report. “They are truly heroes. When most of us would run away, Spencer, Alek and Anthony ran into the line of fire, saying ‘Let’s go.’ Those words changed the fate of many.” On hearing about his church member’s heroism, the Rev. Andrew Farhat, who is pastor at St. Paul, said he wasn’t surprised by Alek’s bravery. “Alek and his father, Emmanuel [Skarlatos] and stepmother, Karen, became members of our church in 2011. Alek was always a strong-minded person who wanted to do things his way,” Farhat said. “After working at [a local store] for a while, he decided that he wanted to serve his country. At first, his father was very concerned about what could happen. But later, with the help of faith, he decided to bless his son’s endeavors. Little did he know that his son would become an internationally renowned hero.” Farhat said Alek’s public news feed on Facebook indicates that within only two days, Alek had spoken with President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden and Hollande. “The congregation feels honored,” said Farhat. “We live in a small city in southern Oregon that most people have not heard of, so many of our members felt proud and honored that a man from our community acted with no fear to disarm a terrorist and save innocent lives.” Posted Aug. 25, 2015

LCMS Lutheran among ‘heroes’ in French-train ordeal

One of three heroic Americans who risked their lives to subdue an armed attacker on a train bound from Amsterdam to Paris Aug. 21 is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Roseburg, Ore., and his congregation is beaming with pride for him.

St. Paul member and Oregon Army National Guardsman Spc. Aleksander Skarlatos and his childhood friends — Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler — thwarted the attack as they were on vacation when a gunman reportedly entered the train carrying an AK-style machine gun, a handgun and a box cutter. Skarlatos reportedly spotted the attacker and alerted his friends. Stone then rushed the gunman as Skarlatos and Sadler assisted in disarming and subduing the assailant. A British passenger also assisted later in the scuffle, according to media reports. “It wasn’t a conscious decision,” Skarlatos said in a U.S. Air Force News Service (AFNS) reportAug. 23. “We didn’t even have time to think about it. We just acted.” The Associated Press (AP) reported that the gunman was identified as 26-year-old Moroccan Ayoub El-Khazzani. The AP also reported El-Khazzani was detained and, as of Aug. 23, European authorities continued to investigate El-Khazzani’s possible ties to Islamic militants. French President François Hollande awarded all three Americans, and the British passenger who assisted them, with France’s highest honor, the Legion d’Honneur, on Aug. 24. In addition to being honored by the French, U.S. Ambassador to France Jane D. Hartly also honored the three men in a special ceremony, according to the AFNS report.

Preschool –Joan Pignataro

Preschool camp was very popular and quite successful. Three new

assistants were hired, all working under 20 hours to save the congregation

money on benefits. The classes are all filled with the exception of 1

opening. New mulch has been ordered. Carpets will be cleaned on

Saturday August 29. The Preschool will be using Vicar’s old office for

overflow during napping hours. They are in the process of cleaning out the

office.

Pastor –

Vicar returned to the Seminary, his wife had her surgery. John Hacik is out

of Berkley Heights rehab center and is now at home with his daughter.

Betty Wasilak has moved to the shore area to live with her daughter.

Pastor has scheduled Sunday Sept. 27 as Rally Day. The Cantata has

been scheduled for Dec. 6th. Sunday School Program will be held on Dec.

20th. Pastor will be away August 26-28 for a Lutheran Haven Meeting;

Sept. 11-12 for an Installation of a Pastor; Sept. 15 – 24th – for a meeting

with District Secretaries and Presidents in St. Louis for New President

orientation; Sept 28-29 Eastern Circuit Pastors Conference in

Pennsylvania. There is a Mission Event in St. Paul Raritan in Sept.

everyone is encouraged to attend. Pastor will be sending a letter to all

Confirmation classes to determine when they would like to hold classes.

Pastor Weatherell will be available as needed. Pastor will be trying to meet

with those scheduled to be confirmed on October 25. We have not had an

Adult Sunday morning class since before Easter. There is a thought to

hold confirmation class at that time. The Elders will work with the younger

confirmation class. The Adult Bible Class will be on Stewardship in the fall.

Unfinished Business

1. Todd Felter needs to take photos. They will retro fit the lighting in the

center of the church

2. 9:30 services will continue through and including Labor Day. Two services

will resume on Sep. 13.

3. Faith to modify contract for 1st Saturday Prayer group and 3rd Saturday

Harvest Group.

Re: Building Usage Agreement

Faith indicated we can write this together like we did the other

agreements. We can use the version for the theatre group.

4. Flashing on the eve toward the front of the church has ripped off. A Roofer

will need to be contracted.

5. Parking lot repairs – They worked a few Saturdays. They will come when

they can; possibly after the theater group.

6. Request from Family of Christ in Tampa Florida to support a new mission

start of $10,000 for North Tampa for Pastor Kurt Steinbrueck and Pastor

Haara. This check will be paid out of the Endowment Fund.

Two new copier machines were delivered, however one was supposed to be

for the Preschool Office. Joan Sitler will follow up with Doris

A Brief History of National Grandparents Day

Purpose

To Honor Grandparents

To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for

their children’s children

To help children become aware of the strength,

information and guidance older people can offer

Grandparents Day First Sunday After Labor Day

In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee. Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, congressmen in every state. And they sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United StatesCongress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. (September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the "autumn years" of life.) Today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by millions throughout the United States.

The Mystery of Stewardship

In Biblical language, a mystery is a reality so far above human understanding that it would never be known if it had not been revealed by the Holy Spirit. Even after the revelation, the mystery cannot be accepted or acted upon without the Spirit’s aid. Through faith, we can understand the mystery, and we can act upon it as well as experience its promises. Without faith, it will remain hidden.

Faith opens the door to this mystery of stewardship. Through faith, we understand that this mystery or even miracle of stewardship is that the more we give, the more we will receive. In our human understanding, this sounds impossible. How can we have more by giving away what we have? Yet this is precisely what the power of God makes possible. God promises blessings to those who give faithfully. Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38). Jesus promises that as we give, we will receive. When we honor God with our wealth and possessions, God will bless us. The blessings we receive through our giving may not always come back to us in kind. We may receive financial blessings, but our greatest blessings will be spiritual because we know God’s gifts to us are far better than our gifts to Him.

In 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9, we read about Paul seeking a collection from the people in Corinth for the distressed Christians in Jerusalem. He promises them a true and full life for their generosity when he writes: “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6). When we give much, we will receive much. Solomon expressed the principle of sowing and reaping in these words: “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched; and one who waters will himself be watered” (Proverbs 11:24-25). He also wrote, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed” (Proverbs 19:17). God has ordained that, when we give generously, we receive generously.

Through this wonderful mystery of stewardship, we can place our trust in the Lord and experience His promise to bless our faithful generosity. When we learn to place our whole weight upon God’s promises, we will begin to experience the mystery at work in our lives. Always remember that God’s power backs His promises. May we all experience the joy of giving generously.
