HEAD PROTECTION HARD HATS Your head is the most important part of your body. It contains the matter that controls your ability to think, speak and move. Wearing your hard hat is the first line of defence from head injury. Every employee should wear protective hard hats when working in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects. STANDARDS AS/NZS 1800:1998 Occupational protective helmets Selection, care and use This Standard sets out recommended practices for the selection, use and maintenance of occupational protective helmets meeting the requirements of AS/NZS 1801 for head protection in building work, construction, general industry, underground working, mining, quarrying, forestry, bushfire fighting, high temperature workplaces and other occupations with similar hazards. AS/NZS 1801:1997 Occupational protective helmets This Standard sets out the requirements for three types of protective helmets based on their intended use. It specifies requirements for occupational protective helmets to protect wearers heads from falling objects in building and construction, quarrying, shipbuilding, forestry and other occupations with similar hazards. These requirements include the construction and materials of the helmet shell and head harness, mechanical strength of the shell and finish of the helmet. Specific additional performance requirements are given for occupational protective helmets used in high temperature workplaces and for bushfire fighters helmets based on industrial helmets. Both Standards above do not cover helmets for motor vehicle users, pedal cyclists, horse riders and structural firefighters. Requirements for such helmets are given in AS 1698, AS/NZS 2063, AS 2063.1 and 2063.3, and AS 4067, respectively.

Every employee should wear protective hard hats when working in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects. STANDARDS AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 Personal eye protection Eye and face protectors for occupational applications This Standard specifies minimum requirements for non-prescription eye and face protectors and associated oculars. They are designed to provide protection for the eyes and faces of persons against common occupational hazards such as flying particles and fragments, dusts, splashing materials and molten metals, harmful gases, vapours and aerosols. Requirements for optical qualities and low, medium, high and very high impact resistance are given and appendices describing appropriate test methods are included in this Standard. Requirements for prescription-eye protectors against low and medium impact are given in AS/NZS 1337.6. Requirements for eye protectors against laser radiation are given in AS/NZS 1337, Parts 4 and 5. The aim of this Standard is to assist in the provision of safe, efficient and comfortable vision in the occupational situation, including consideration of the need for protection against sun glare and optical radiation in the natural environment. The Standard does not apply to filter oculars for protection against optical radiations generated by industrial processes, which are dealt with in AS/NZS 1338. EYEWEAR MARKINGS For any certified safety eyewear product sold in Australia, they must carry markings either impressed or etched into the frame and lenses indicating what they are approved to. Please note that for a single lens product such as goggles, the markings need only appear once. On a dual lens product, the markings must be on each lens. The European Standard (EN166) markings can also be used.

BENEFITS A polarised lens offers the following advantages over non-polarised lenses: Improves visual comfort Improves contrast and visual clarity Reduces eyestrain Allows for true perception of colours Reduces reflections and eliminates glare

POLARISED SAFETY GLASSES Sunlight can be absorbed or reflected in several different directions. Sunlight that is bouncing off horizontal surfaces such as water, land or the bonnet of a car is usually reflected in a similar horizontal direction. This creates glare that can not only create visual discomfort but can also cause a potentially blinding glare. Glare has the potential to create a very dangerous situation, especially while driving as it can hide potential obstacles - even pedestrians or oncoming cars. Polarised lenses contain a laminated filter that allows only vertically oriented light to pass through. This blocks the horizontally oriented light so glare is almost eliminated.

HEARING PROTECTION NOISE Hazardous noise affects the functioning of the inner ear, which may cause temporary hearing loss. After a period of time away from the noise, hearing may be restored. With further exposure to hazardous noise, the ear will gradually lose its ability to recover and the hearing loss will become permanent. STANDARDS AS/NZS 1270:2002 Acoustics - Hearing Protectors This Standard specifies requirements for the design, materials, and performance of conventional hearing protectors. It also provides guidance on the general requirements for, and the physical and acoustic testing of, specialist hearing protectors. WHAT DOES SLC

    80 MEAN?

As stated in AS/NZS 1270:2002, SLC

80 (Sound Level Conversion) is a single

number rating commonly used in Australia and New Zealand to compare the acoustic performance of hearing protectors. The subscript 80 indicates that in well-managed hearing protector programs, the protection provided is expected to equal or exceed the SLC

    80 in 80% of protector-wearer noise spectrum

combinations. Put simply, the SLC80 is a laboratory estimate of the amount of attenuation achievable by 80% of users when properly fit. It is a population-based estimate - some users will achieve more attenuation in the real world, some will achieve less. SLC80 is the only rating that applies to the Australian market. Other ratings such as NRR (US Noise Reduction Rating) and SNR (European Single Number Rating) do not apply in Australia. The following table describes the relationship between SLC

80 and the Class of a

    hearing protection device.

    SLC80

HEARING PROTECTION HOW WE HEAR OUTER EAR The outer ear collects pressure waves in the air (sound waves), and directs them into the auditory canal, making the eardrum vibrate in tune with the sound wave. MIDDLE EAR The vibration is passed through the middle ear as oscillations via three small bones commonly called the hammer, anvil and stirrup (Malleus, Incus and Stapes). The oscillations are hen transferred as pulses in the fluid system of the upper passageway inside the cochlear which is the sense organ of hearing. INNER EAR The inner ear is a fluid filled complex set of small tubes and chambers filled with tiny hairs that convert the vibration into nerve signals that the brain can interpret

THE COCHLEA The cochlea is a fluid filled organ containing around 35,000 hair cells. If these cells are broken or destroyed completely, we experience hearing loss. Hearing loss is permanent and completely irreversible, yet 100% preventable!

    Single Use

Hold the earplug between thumb and forefinger. Roll the full length of the earplug into a narrow, wrinkle free cylinder.

Using the opposite hand, reach across your head and pull ear up and back to maximise ear opening. Gently work compressed plug into ear canal, with end level with external ridges of ear.

Hold in for 30 seconds, until foam expands to fully seal the ear to maximise exclu-sion of noise. Repeat for other ear.

    Multiple Use

Using the opposite hand, reach across your head and pull ear up and back to maximise ear opening.

Insert plug gently until all ripples are inside the ear canal.

The tip of the plug should be visible when viewed from the front. Repeat for other ear.

    Banded

With headband beneath chin, place plugs into each ear canal.

For maximum efficiency, use opposite hand to pull ear back and up to open ear canal for insertion.

Push each pad into the ear until you notice a significant lowering of noise level.

The QuietDose system from Howard Leight provides the ultimate in accuracy for assessment of personal workplace noise risk. QuietDose is the first noise level monitoring system that uses in-ear dosimetry to measure every sound that reaches the users eardrum. Dramatically more precise than existing area or personal sampling devices currently in use, QuietDose provides previously unattainable and highly precise data points that allow both workers and management to make the smartest, best informed hearing protection decision. Using sophisticated microphones embedded in popular styles of Howard Leight earplugs and earmuffs, QuietDose records daily noise exposure levels for each employee and displays actual TWA dose at the end of shift. Ask the team at Taylor Safety Equipment today for more details on how QuietDose can bring you and your employees closer to the prevention of noise induced hearing loss.

VeriPRO from Howard Leight is a testing technology that makes it easy to get an accurate measurement of the attenuation that an employee achieves from their earplugs in the workplace. It allows employers to determine whether employees are receiving optimal protection, require additional training on how to fit earplugs, or need to try a different model. VeriPRO - Measures the Personal Attenuation Rating for each employee Works with any ear plug, corded or uncorded and from any

manufacturer Fulfils regulatory requirements to ensure correct initial fitting of

hearing protection Documents training and testing for new and existing employees Provides an ideal opportunity for one-on-one education Ask the team at Taylor Safety Equipment today for more details on how VeriPRO can become an integral part of a successful hearing conservation program.

    RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

TYPES OF CONTAMINANTS DUST A solid airborne particle that is usually mechanically generated from processes such as sanding, drilling, blasting, quarrying etc. MIST A liquid particle suspended in air, usually formed by the condensation of vapour or atomisation of a liquid. Depending on the origin of the mist, droplets may be-have like dust particles in the air. FUME A solid airborne particle generated by the action of thermal processes on solids. A typical example of a fume is welding fume. The heat of the welding rod causes the metal to melt and vaporise. As the vapour moves away from the heat into cooler air, it condenses into a very fine solid particle seen as fume. GAS / VAPOUR Gases are air-like substances that are neither liquid or solid at room temperature. Vapours are the gaseous state of substances that are liquid or solid at ambient temperature. The gaseous state occurs through the different operations carried out with these substances such as mixing or spraying, or through changes in temperature or humidity. COMBINATION CONTAMINANTS Combination contaminants usually contain both dusts and gases/vapours. A typical example of a combination contaminant is spray paint. The operation generates a droplet which behaves like a dust particle, but the solvent carriers are released as organic vapours. Therefore it is necessary to use protection that will deal with gases/vapours as well as the droplets OXYGEN DEFICIENCY / ENRICHMENT An atmosphere that contains less that 19.5% oxygen (deficient atmosphere) and more than 23.5% oxygen (enriched atmosphere).

    RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

TYPES OF RESPIRATORY PROTECTION AIR PURIFYING RESPIRATORS (APR) Air is cleaned through the filter attached to the mask, or the filter medium of the mask itself. The air is drawn through the filter manually via the breathing of the wearer. APRs are available in 3 different categories - Disposable (Designed to be worn once and then disposed) Reusable 1/2 face mask with filters Reusable full face mask with filters POWERED AIR PURIFYING RESPIRATORS (PAPR) Air is delivered to the face mask of the unit via a separate blower unit. Air is cleaned through the filter attached to the blower unit, delivering cool clean air to the wearer. SUPPLIED AIR RESPIRATORS (SAR) Air is compressed outside of the contaminated area and delivered to the face mask of the wearer at a constant flow. The compressed air passes through a coalescing filter for cleaning before being delivered to the wearer. SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPRATUS (SCBA) A cylinder of air is worn on a backpack, providing breathing air to the face mask of the wearer. This is worn in atmospheres that are Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH). ESCAPE BREATHING APPARATUS (EBA) A small cylinder that provides breathing air to the face mask of the wearer. These are used for emergency escape from atmospheres that are Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH). Air supply generally last for up to 10 to 15 minutes.

Cup the respirator in the hands, allowing the head-straps to hang freely.

Hold the respirator under the chin with the nose-piece facing outwards. Place the lower strap around the neck below the ears. Holding the respirator against the face, place the top strap above the ears, around the crown of the head.

Mould the nose area to the shape of the face, running the finger tips of both hands from the top of the nose-piece down both sides while pressing inward.

Fit check the face seal by first placing both hands over the respirator. If the respirator does not have an exhalation valve, exhale sharply. Air should not escape. If it is fitted with an exhalation valve, inhale sharply. The mask should suck into the face.

WARNING: If you cannot achieve a satisfactory fit or leaks are detected, DO NOT enter the contaminated area. Re-adjust the mask before entry.

FALL PROTECTION DEFINITIONS Fall-arrest system An assembly of interconnected components comprising a harness connected to an anchorage point or anchorage system either directly or by means of a lanyard or pole strap, and whose purpose is to arrest a fall in accordance with the principles and requirements of the Standards. The maximum free fall distance allowable is 2m. Restraint technique Control on a persons movement by use of a fall-arrest system, which entails connection to an anchorage using an adjustable lanyard or other adjustable component that can be adjusted for length as necessary to physically prevent the person from reaching a position at which there is a risk of a free or limited free fall. This replaces the previous term of working in restraint. Fall clearances The system must be set up in such a way that the worker will avoid striking a lower level surface or obstacle, and be maintained in a position post fall, to ensure an easy and quick rescue. Each type of fall arrest device will have its own clearance requirements - check AS/NZS 1891.4 for further information.

FALL PROTECTION HIERARCHY OF CONTROL Users of fall-arrest systems need to be aware as to where these systems are placed in the hierarchy of control of fall protection, so that an assessment can be made as to whether the highest level of protection is being applied in a particular case. The below figure illustrates the hierarchy of control.

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND RISK ASSESSMENT Identify the hazards (e.g. a fall) and assess the likelihood and consequence of each hazard (e.g. injury or death).

ELIMINATION Eliminate the need to access the fall-risk area, e.g. by locating or relocating items requiring inspection, maintenance or other attention, elsewhere

FALL PROTECTION Provide personal protective equipment which either prevents a fall or reduces the risk or severity of a fall or, in the event of a fall minimizes the risk of injury.

ISOLATION Barricade or enclose the fall risk so that it cannot be reached.

SUBSTITUTION Provide alternative means of access to the point or item to which access must be made which avoids the risk of fall, e.g. walkways.
