Term 2 Week 3B 13 May 2016 28-44 Purchase Rd, Cherrybrook NSW 2126 Telephone 9484 2144 Fax 9875 4537 Web: http://cths.nsw.edu.au Email: [email protected] DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT NAPLAN Exams This week all Year 7 and 9 students completed their NAPLAN (National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy) exams in Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation. This test is a diagnostic tool, which gives teachers and parents a snapshot of what their child can and cannot do on the day of the test. As a school we will analyse the results, looking at strengths and weaknesses in particular groups, as well as individual students. This information will be used to put strategies in place for matters which may require attention in the future. Year 7 Parent/Teacher Interviews A reminder to parents, the Parent/Teacher Interviews for Year 7 will be held on Tuesday 17 May in the MPC from 4 - 7pm. Parents should have received an email from Mrs Howard, Stage 4 Head Teacher, explaining how to logon to the Parent Portal and book times to see your child’s teachers. Parent/Teacher Interviews provide an excellent opportunity for parents and caregivers to meet teachers and discuss individual student’s progress and future needs. Students are encouraged to attend and be involved in the discussions. BOSTES Registration From 2015, all NSW public schools are required to meet the registration requirements demonstrating system compliance, as specified in the Education Act 1990. The Department of Education is responsible for providing the Board of Studies, Teaching and Education Standards (BOSTES) group with information on its systems and processes, to verify compliance of its schools with registration requirements. Much of this involves schools providing data and information showing the correct implementation of key policies. Each year 20 to 30 schools participate in this sampling process. We have been informed that CTHS will be reviewed this year, meaning staff are busy preparing documents as evidence, in readiness for the BOSTES visit on Thursday 2 June. Year 12 Reports Term 2 is a traditionally busy time of year for staff with exams, marking, reports and Parent/Teacher Interviews all in the mix. Parents of Year 12 students will be pleased to hear Year 12 reports will be posted on Friday 20 May, providing valuable information on the progress of their children as they approach the HSC exams. Year 12 Movie Night The Year 12 SRC Executive are keen to follow-on from the success of last year’s Year 12 Movie Night with their own event. Year 12 students received information this week about the upcoming Movie Night, which will be held on Wednesday 18 May from 6 - 9pm in the MPC. Last year it was a great success and lots of fun was had by all. Entry is $20, which will cover the cost of food and drink with any remaining money being donated to the fund set up for Tracey Trumper. This was requested by Year 12 as a mark of support for the Trumper family and more specifically, Renee Trumper, a friend and fellow Year 12 student. Channel Seven Sunrise Team visit CTHS and JPPS On Tuesday, CTHS and JPPS hosted a visit from the Sunrise Breakfast Show. The gathering of parents and students on the John Purchase PS oval followed-up a story the Sunrise team did last week, in which parents within our school community won a Love Thy Neighbour competition. The $10,000 prize money was graciously donated to Tracey Trumper, to help her fund the medication required for her battle against a rare form of lung cancer called Ros 1 (see last week’s Network story). The story aired on Sunrise on Wednesday morning and the segment can be viewed via the following link https://au.tv.yahoo.com/sunrise/video/watch/31571012/ love-thy-neighbour-catchup/#page1. We continue to support Tracey and her three children who attend CTHS. If you feel you would like to donate, a website has been set up by her friends. Teacher Observation Mentoring Scheme (TOMS) It is a requirement of every school to provide a high quality Induction Program and support for their beginning teachers as they enter the teaching profession. At CTHS we are quite proud of the support we provide our beginning teachers. A new initiative we are introducing this year to support our current programs, is the Teacher Observation Mentoring Scheme (TOMS). This week our carefully selected mentor teachers and beginning teachers met to discuss how a mentoring relationship should operate; they unpacked the Professional Teaching Standards and started the Lesson Observation process. Feedback from both mentor and mentee teachers involved on the day was positive. We look forward to our Induction Program, which will provide valuable time for teacher reflection as well as the sharing of ideas between experienced and beginning teachers, enhancing student learning outcomes. A big thank you to Mrs Navarro and Ms Cross for running this important professional development activity. CTHS Baristas help JPPS Mother’s Day Breakfast Event Mr Hind and a team of our trained student baristas were present at the annual JPPS Mother’s Day Breakfast event on Friday 6 May, to help serve coffee and tea. Ron Harropp, the JPPS P&C President, personally thanked the school for providing much of the material for the coffee shop on the morning and of course the students who worked tirelessly to serve coffee to a large group of Mum’s and young children. The event raised $1,915 which was donated to Tracey Trumper’s Sick or Treat page. Grade Sport Finals Last week twelve teams played in the grade sport finals, of which five of these were victorious. A big congratulations to these teams for their efforts and achievements. A more extensive report on the winning teams can be found later in Network, written by our Sports Promotion Officers, Emily Jones and Kurt Perry. Solar Panel Program Last week traffic outside the school was held up, as a large shipping container was delivered to our main carpark. Inside are the solar panels which will be installed on the rooftops of Blocks A and E. Work on this program is due to get underway on Monday 16 May. The 90kW system will produce substantially more power than our current 8kW system, which will feed directly into the grid and offset our rather large electricity bills. We welcome the addition of the solar panels to our school as it not only provides an opportunity for students to learn about the system as part of their curriculum, but also improves our sustainability credentials across the school. Congratualtions to…

Cherrybrook Technology High School Business Directory Your child will receive the first edition of the CTHS Business Directory during roll call early next week. The CTHS Business Directory includes advertising from local suppliers to the school as well as businesses run by parents of CTHS students. This is a P&C initiative and proceeds raised from advertisements will be used to fund and support various student programs. Whilst the CTHS Business Directory is currently ‘pocket-sized’, it is hoped it will soon grow as more people become involved in future editions. Please ask your child next week for your copy of the CTHS Business Directory, which we hope will be a worthwhile resource. Your support of businesses within this directory will be helping all students at CTHS. If you would like to place an advertisement in a future edition of the CTHS Business Directory, please email Michael Martin, [email protected] Mr Clements

Public Speaking Congratulations to Bertin Huynh who ably represented CTHS at the local final of the Plain English Public Speaking Competition at Normanhurst Boys’ High School on Wednesday 4 May. In this competition speakers present an eight minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice and are then challenged with a three minute impromptu speech (and given only three minutes to prepare). The competition is fierce and Bertin is to be congratulated on being chosen to proceed to the Area final for the competition. In Bertin’s words: “I spoke about the recent Syrian refugee crises for the prepared speech. I looked at the issue through the lens of my father's own search for asylum. I hoped people would see that history is repeating itself and it is essential to our common humanity to help these people. Then for the shorter impromptu speech with the prompt, ‘Blurred Lines’ I used Robin Thicke's controversial song, ‘Blurred Lines’ as a platform to talk about problem of rape culture in our society.” We wish him the best of luck in the next round! Mrs Granziera, Public Speaking Coordinator Debating News Congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 Interschool Debating teams who each achieved convincing wins in the first round of the Interschool Debating Competition. Our Year 9 team, comprised of Jayan Pascoe, Raghav Lall, Daniel Monteiro and Priya Parthasarathy convincingly argued the negative case for the topic Teachers should be able to search students’ bags, focussing on the importance of privacy and trust in the teacher-student relationship. Our Year 10 team Rachel Hempsall, Caitlin Preston, Senuwani Perera and Vanshika Gupta were highly persuasive in their contention that We Should Ban NAPLAN Testing emphasising the greater value and importance of teacher judgement and assessment. We look forward to the next rounds of the competition where the topics of Sport and Law will be explored. Mrs Granziera, Debating Coordinator Library (and beyond) Books and libraries are synonymous. Books can be wondrous, relaxing, challenging and inspirational. Technological change means libraries are now home to more than just traditional, paper books; information comes in a myriad of forms and is available al l day long (but get your seven to eight hours of sleep despite the temptations). When your school library is closed, visit your local library! Make Hornsby Central Library (and/or its branches, Pennant Hills, Galston, Epping and Berowra) a destination for leisure and study and for community information. Are you a member? If not, join and see what services, activities and resources you can access, such as fiction and non-fiction, DVDs, eResources, book club, knitting group, exhibitions and more. http://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/library/catalogue-and-elibrary/elibrary/online-resources-A-Z#s Ms Halder

Japan Trip Our two-week exchange trip to Japan began on Saturday 9 April at Sydney International Airport. For most of us, this would be our first time in Japan and to say we were excited was an understatement.

It was hard to accept that we finally arrived and I couldn’t believe I was in Japan until my attempt to connect to free Wi-Fi that led me to a page I could barely understand.

The first few days of sightseeing were spent in Kyoto and Osaka, where we visited shrines, temples, castles and the Floating Garden Observatory and participated in traditional activities such as dyeing Yuzen handkerchiefs and making Japanese sweets. We spent one day at Universal Studios going on various rides and shopped during our free time.

On arrival… we forgot all the Japanese we ever learnt but despite that, Nagoya Commercial High School was definitely the highlight of the trip. It was a place where we joined in classes, experienced a Japanese Tea Ceremony and spent time with our host families. We made many new friends in Nagoya and hope to see them again one day.

The trip to Tokyo was long but entertaining as our one night’s stay at Hakone led to us wearing Yukata (traditional clothing) and going in an Onsen (hot spring bath). We visited Mt Komagatake by cable car, went on a Lake Ashi cruise and finally got to see Mt Fuji at the fifth station. Much better than sticking our faces on the bus window.

Days at Tokyo were filled with shopping, sightseeing and more shopping. The shops at Tokyo must have had amazing business during those two days. We sang karaoke in Nakamise, visited Akihaara and the Tokyo Skytree where we played a bad game of I-Spy.

After such an amazing experience in Japan we were all very sad to leave it behind. We made many friends during the exchange trip - both in Nagoya and within the group. Thank you to all the teachers, both in CTHS and in Nagoya who organised it and our parents for paying and letting us go for giving us a chance to experience something so great. It is definitely something that we will never forget.

We’ll be back one day, Japan!

Year 12 Work Studies Classroom Visit Dwayne Goodman, Senior Manager Catering and Licensee of Sydney Olympic Park visited Year 12 work studies on Wednesday 11 May. Dwayne visited the school to share his experiences and knowledge gained through the workplace. Dwayne, a past student of CTHS, was motivated from an early age to be a chef and specifically an executive chef by the time he was 30. He shared his highly successful career with us and the fame he encountered on the way. Today he works at Sydney Showground where he oversees all event planning for events such as Stereosonic, Midnight Mafia, Iron Maiden and many more. Many inspiring lessons were learnt by our students including: “In the work place everything doesn’t go your way, you have to start from the bottom to get to the top.” (Tom) “I learnt that different generations look at the workplace in different ways. An employer has to use the skills wisely within the company or they may leave.” (Lucas) “If you really want to climb the ladder you have to be willing to learn different skill sets.” (Connor) “People are motivated differently, they like to work in different ways. The employer needs to look for different ways to motivate these people to get them to work harder and keep them in the business.” (Keegan) “Its challenging being at the top, it’s not all about the rewards. Firing people was one of the hardest things Dwayne had to do particularly when they hadn’t done anything wrong. It’s just that the business has to make them redundant.” (Tayla-Lee) “Being a manager at a young age can be difficult because you may not have the life experiences and knowledge that an older employer would have in difficult situations.” (Oscar) “Dwayne talked about how you can do different things to what you want to do to gain knowledge and experiences and then work your way to where you want to be. For example if you want to be in the music industry you can start as a bouncer and get to know the people around you, start talking and ask questions.” (Jack) “If you want to succeed you need to be confident and stand out.” (Kaylie) “I liked the man’s gusto, it’s obvious he’s a real go-getter.” (Keegan) Some excellent questions were responded to with informative answers and great advice. The class found Dwayne Goodman’s management abilities to be quite impressive. One lesson the class took away was the importance of owning up to your own mistakes. The work studies class thoroughly enjoyed having Dwayne visit their class and for his delivery of inspirational and motivational words. As a collective group, 12WST would like to thank Mrs Navarro for organising this speaker and say how much they appreciated Dwayne’s contribution to their classroom.
