Term 2 Week 6

31 May 2016

"The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention." - Kahlil Gibran. Actions speak louder than words – procrastinating and saying you want to do more to help but not following through is not enough, in fact it often makes you feel worse about yourself. Sorry Day: Last Thursday, our SRC and aboriginal students were invited to attend the Sorry Day ceremony held at the old council chambers for the flag raising and then the concert at the Pavilion. Our students discussed the recent totem poles we have installed and the significance behind totem poles for Aboriginal people, they then read a poem by Oodgeroo Noonucal on totems. A highlight of the event was watching the renowned Doonoch Dancers perform and some of our students joined them on stage. Thank you to Miss Harrold for her organisation and time. After the performances we were lucky to catch a photo with Uncle Andrew who leads the dancers.

Front Office: We are blessed with excellent office staff and this week many of our office staff will be at professional learning for the regional SAS conference. Mrs Crabb and Mrs Timbs have been instrumental in organising and preparing this professional learning event. This week you may need to be a little understanding as we have relieving staff taking the roles for front office and teacher’s aide positions. REMINDERS: 2017 Kindergarten Enrolments have begun: we need parents to actively seek enrolment now so we can establish contact lists for upcoming events. We have activities planned and would like to welcome you to community events earlier so you get a sense of the wonderful school community Kiama Public School is so lucky to enjoy. If you know anyone with Kindergarten children, even if they are unsure as to which school they want to attend or when their child should start, ask them to register so we can get started on creating a positive long term relationship. Call the office on 42321471, email the school or pop in and say hi.

Public Speaking time: We are presently working on finding our Public Speaking representatives for stage 2 and 3. Classes have been holding their own competitions and they will come together next week in the hall to select our school representatives. It’s a terrific competition that utilises an essential life skill – to have a voice and use it wisely to make a difference. Beautiful Moments: A new enrolment to our school moved in across the road from one of our families. Within minute, they were was greeted by two of our wonderful boys, who declared immediately putting out a hand “welcome to our neighbourhood”. The mother was taken aback how friendly and lovely it was to start their new home and school with such friendly charming young boys. We are all very lucky to have such wonderful caring students. Oxfam Unfashionable Friday fundraiser: students and staff appeared very odd last Friday as they strutted out in miss matched out-dated clothes to support OXFAM – a charity trying to make a difference globally for countries particular facing famine. Well done to our SRC who led the way. The photos on our website are worth a peek. Soccer and netball success last week- Well done to our boys and girls soccer that defeated Oak Flats PS and to our Netball team who were successful in their first round. Cross Country – this Friday 3 June, the regional cross country will be held at Willandra near Cambewarra. We have ten students representing the Tongarra team. We wish every one of them the very best on this challenging course. A report will follow next week with results. ART Competition – The Little Archies: it was wonderful to see such an array of artistic talent on display last week. I struggle to see how they judge these works as they are all so clever and colourful, but here were winners. We had an overall winner of the competition in Koby King from KB. Koby received his award and prize last Thursday. Congratulations to all the entrants on their art work. See below

Have a great week – Michael Honeywood (Prinicpal)

Why do the Grand Tours for new Kindergarten 2017 parents? It’s an intimate unique way to see the school. Five families were provided with a tour by our captains and the feedback was very positive. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful captains who have great pride in their school. Their tour is far more personal and you can get a student’s view point into what KPS is like for students. Ask as many questions as you like. Remember if you haven’t booked yet, or if you know families considering KPS in 2017, it’s not too late as there are two more Thursday 9th June 1.45-2.45pm and Monday 27 June 12-1pm.

These school leaders will be happy to escort new families on the Grand tours on Thursday 9 June 1.45-2.45pm and Monday 27 June 12-1pm.

STUDENT NEWS 5/6T assembly item – “Doing this assembly item was really fun and I was quite amazed with what Mr. Thomason had come up with for our rap and that he could fit all 30 of us in. It took a lot of practise especially with the rap and we couldn’t wait to perform it at assembly.” Ella W. “For the last couple of weeks, we - 5/6 T, have been practising our assembly item. I’ve had so much fun practising in the hall and in the classroom. My favourite part about our assembly item was our rap. This is because it introduces everyone and lets people know which hidden talents we all have. It is very tempting to sing it out loud in the playground or even at home. I think that we should get an award for ‘best assembly item of the year’. I have had so much fun practising my item with the class.” Hunter-Lee P.

The Little Archies of Kiama art competition Following on from the news of Koby King's 1st prize in his age group, we also have the following students with a highly commended certificate to acknowledge their effort and skills. Aliyah Kona, Arlen King, Zara Winterton, Lilly Dare-Ward, Isla Oxley, Amelia Blanchett, Oscar Cottrell , Zoe Arndt-Jackman, Harry Somerville-McAlester, Gus Fjellstad, Baxter Badami, Rico Ross, Kayla Weston, Maya Woolley, Josie Cunningham and Madelyn Hale.

OXFAM UNFASHIONABLE FRIDAY FUNDRAISER - $455.50 RAISED!!!!

Students were to wear odd, out-there clothes last Friday and were asked to donate a gold coin for the SRC to support OXFAM – a charity trying to make a difference globally for countries particular facing famine. See below for some of the wonderful outfits.

ADVERTISING AND COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS See & Save Brothers and childcare workers Courtney and Jarrad Dober are trying to raise $80,000. Why, because they want to be able to manufacture and distribute a potentially life-saving medical ID wristband to every child in Australia with Asthma, Allergies or Anaphylaxis at NO COST to parents and carer’s.

Yep they want to give them away for FREE! But first they need your help. The identification bands help to raise awareness of a child’s condition, and most importantly aid carers, friends, teachers, coaches, paramedics and the public to act quickly and use the most appropriate course of first aid should an incident ever occur. A recent study indicated that Australian children experiencing food anaphylaxis were wrongly treated for asthma first, and that adrenaline was administered in only 10% of cases. That same study found that late or absent use of adrenaline was a huge risk factor for death. For any teacher, being on playground duty and trying to identify the difference between a puffed out child and an asthmatic child, is extremely difficult. Early identification leads to appropriate monitoring or treatment, that’s exactly what the “See & Save” wristbands do. Take a look at the video the brothers have created, and if you feel as surprised (and educated) by the alarming statistics as we did, please donate to the cause. Head over to https://pozible.com/project/seeandsave to watch the campaign video.

Bus Passes It should be noted that parents and caregivers are now responsible for downloading the applications forms from www.transportnsw.info/school-students. If parents and caregivers do not have access to download forms online, contact 131500 for assistance. These forms should then be presented to the school for verification and then forwarded directly to: Transport for NSW Parramatta Office Locked Bag 5085 PARRAMATTA NSW 2124 Transport will now approve and enter the student information and send it back to the bus company to issue the pass and send the pass to the school. Any student that does not have a pass will be charged a fare. Replacement passes will still be issued by the operators, thus the $10.00 replacement fee is still required to be sent to our office for processing. Change of address forms need to be completed via the online process also by downloading the application form and taking it to the school for verification. PLEASE NOTE: RURAL & REGIONAL STUDENTS (KIAMA AREA) WILL MAINTAIN OPERATOR ISSUED PASSES AND WILL NOT BE PROVIDED WITH OPAL CARDS. If you have any questions regarding the changes, please contact TfNSW on 131 500 or Kiama Coaches (02) 4232 3466.
