Please check with teachers when it is appropriate to take photos. The class teacher will organise for an official video to be taken of a performance if required and some of our par- ents have expressly asked for photographs not to be taken of their children and certainly not posted or live streamed. It is important that we respect, and honour people’s privacy wishes for their children.

THE FRIDAY FLIER

KOTAHITANGA

Waikato Waldorf School, Kindergartens and Playcircle

Kia ora tatou

This week we managed to hold our cross-country events and luckily the weather held for us (just!!). It is marvellous to see our children really pushing themselves to complete this challenge. Some of our students have a natural talent for long distance running and it was wonderful to see them in full flight. For others (like myself) completing such a distance running or fast walking is an achievement showing will and tenacity. It was a joy to see the encouragement and support fellow students gave each other. Thank you also to our marshals who braved the wind and showers making this event possible.

It has been brought to my attention that some of our plays/performances are being filmed and photographed by families. Can I draw your attention to our special character commitment expectations as outlined in the parent handbook.

“Use of Cameras, Videos and Phone Cameras”

Camera phones are now an accessory for many people, and with them comes the opinion that every event is ripe for “capturing”. Where parents once asked for permission to take photos of special events, they now as-sume that anything can be photographed anywhere.

There are significant privacy issues inherent in this. As a school we are required to have parental permission before publishing photographs of the children. It is important, if you are photographing, that both parents and students, as well as teachers, feel comfortable with this.

We ask that Plays, Festivals, Sharing Assemblies and other class performances held indoors not be photo-graphed or videoed at all. Clicking and/or flashing cameras can be intrusive and distracting both for players and audiences and detract from the performance.

We wish everyone to enter into the participatory mood of a live performance and the experience we are trying to cultivate, rather than seeing it as a photo opportunity. A play comes alive in the imagination of a child, their ex-perience of being in a role, and in the dynamic generated between cast and audience.

Please check with teachers when it is appropriate to take photos.

The class teacher will organise for an official video to be taken of a performance if required and some of our par-ents have expressly asked for photographs not to be taken of their children and certainly not posted or live streamed. It is important that we respect, and honour people’s privacy wishes for their children.

Te Wiki Pukapuka! Book Week!

August 19 -23

Celebrating and sharing imagination, knowledge and skills

through the wonderful world of books!

Monday 19th

– Cook a Book!

A nice way to spend a Sunday! Your child is challenged to make or help make something for a

shared lunch by using a recipe from a cook book! Think savouries and salads as well as muffins or

cakes so we have a variety! Last year one of our student’s made medieval lemonade! Bring in a

copy of the recipe to share!

Thursday 22nd

– Literary Character Dress-up Day!

Start planning! This is a fun event with an opportunity for the whole school to get together to show

their costumes. This is highly exciting for many children but can also cause some anxiety! There

are lots of fabulous literary characters to help your child participate in this event and still feel com-

fortable in what they are wearing. Please see your class teacher for some ideas if you get stuck.

Visiting Authors

Sharon Holt—visiting author of a range of Te Reo sing-a-long books on Friday 23rd at 11am for the

lower school and then separately the Junior High.

Nikki Crutchley—visiting NZ author will be presenting to the Junior High on Monday 19th at 11.10am

In-Class Activities

There will be a range of in-class activities from sharing favourite picture books to following instruc-

tions and making things to creating ‘zines’, anthologies or books. The whole school will also partake

in an inter-class read-a-thon and teachers will be sharing their favourite childhood books during

lunchtimes in the library. Please look out for any information or requests from your class teacher as

well.

Donation Opportunities

There is an opportunity to donate specific books to the school library. Please look out for the stand

of books in the foyer of the office from midday Monday and details on next page about how to pur-

chase these. All proceeds will go to the school library for the purchase of new books!

Giving Back! We have the opportunity to gift back to our community some older school journals.

These will be set up in the Library on the Friday afternoon and contain some great New Zealand

inspired reading.

Dear Waikato Waldorf Community,

As you are no doubt aware next week is 'Book Week' here at WWS. As part of our cele-

bration of all things 'booky', community members will be given the opportunity to help to bolster our school Library's collection by purchasing brand new books from a selected display of 'wanted' books.

The display will be available in the office reception area from around midday

on Monday 19th August.

Here are the simple steps to follow to purchase and donate books:

1. Browse and select the book or books you wish to donate to school

2. Fill out a paper slip with your name/book title/$ amount

3. Hand the slip and books to Monika

4. Arrange payment, either by cash or online

5. Optional - Write out a small 'Donated by....' slip which we will stick in the front of your donated books

Please note - these are not books for sale to take home - they are just books to be purchased and donated to our school Library.

In the event that community members are unable to get to school but wish to make a financial donation for new books, this is possible by online transfer to Bank Account ASB 12 3171 026911 00 and make sure you include 'WWS Book Week' in the transaction reference/description.

Any and all donations will be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Rob Shirlow

CLASSROOM CORNER

Class Seven – Physiology Main Lesson

In Class Seven at present we are starting a main lesson about the human body.

To begin with the students are working on making a scale model of a skeleton. They got into groups and chose one member to be

the model. The group measured their bones (from the outside of course) and then used cartridge paper and newsprint to create an

articulated skeleton. Lots of fun. Logan brought his friend Jeff who acted as a consultant during this process as he was able to talk

about skeletons from personal experience.

Eloisa, George and Shanika designing and beginning to build. The boys creating legs.

Elliott and Kyan make hands while Zion prepares a spine. Logan, George and Jeff share a moment.

Jeff is a quiet lad and very well behaved.

Sharon’s family kindly offered some pictures of what they look like

inside for our edification.

Lemon throat compress

Falling temperatures and wet weather place considerable demands on our warmth organism, invading

viruses and bacteria have it easy and the threat of colds and infections increases… now lemons have

a wonderful ability to sooth a sore scratchy throat.

A lemon compress will alleviate the pain. There are two ways to apply:

First way

Slice a lemon thinly into circles and place the lemon circles on the middle of a thin cotton scarf or

clean handkerchief, fold the material over the lemons then with the bottom of a cup gently press down

onto the lemon circles releasing their juice and apply to the front of the neck leaving the spine uncov-

ered, cover with a woollen scarf. Leave in place for 20min and repeat as needed

Or this way…

Add the juice of a lemon to 2 cups of hot water placed into a small bowl and use this to moisten a thin

cotton cloth (cloth handkerchief). Wring it out well!! Place it, as warm as tolerated, on the front of the

neck, leaving the spine uncovered. Then wrap a woollen scarf around the neck. Leave the compress

to work for half an hour. Continue to keep the neck warm and repeat as needed.

PRIVATE PIANO LESSONS AVAILABLE - TERM 3

Starting in Term 3 I am excited to be returning to Waikato Waldorf as a Eurythmy Pianist again (alongside the wonderful and talented Clive). I was the Eurythmy Pianist at the school for many years and also taught piano to many of the children. I have 18 years piano teaching experi-ence, have studied music to University level and have been an active member in the music community in Hamilton for many years. My experi-ence ranges from theatre and film, through to bands and music groups. I have an organic approach and work with each child on an individual ba-sis tailoring to their strengths, while nurturing a love and appreciation for music! I also aim to provide a fun and enjoyable environment to help encourage creative expression. I teach both Piano and Theory (I have numerous Theory Games which help make learning theory a more re-warding experience). I'm able to teach a wide range of musical styles; Classical, Jazz, Blues, Folk, Alt Country, Pop etc. My lessons are on an individual/ one to one basis; giving my students the benefit of lessons specifically tailored to their needs.
