I hope you managed to get a good break with your families and are ready for a bright and busy new year. I would like to welcome all our new families into our school community, we look forward to travelling along the same path with you in the forthcoming years. The pòwhiri yesterday was, as usual, an emotional occasion and it was lovely to see all the expectant faces of our new Class 1 children and their proud families. A special thank you needs to go to Te Aroha, Bodie, Mel and Nick for participating in the karanga and mihi, a beautiful and special ceremony. So we are starting the new year with a number of new initiatives. In Class 1 Elizabeth is using the movable classroom concept instead of chairs and tables. A big thank you to Twinny and Tina for the time and care they have put into making our beautiful handmade wooden benches and to Kat for our special cushions. Elizabeth will be conducting an inquiry into the use and impact of the movable class- room and we will let you know how it is all going in future fliers. We are also launching our new KiVa anti bully programme, as mentioned in our final flier of 2017. All staff were involved in a training day at the end of last term and we have a specially trained group of teachers who have formed our KivA team. Please find attached an additional leaflet for your infor- mation, please note that this programme has been adapted to fit in with our special character so when the information material refers to short films and computer games we will not be using these but will be meeting the aims of these sessions by other means. We would also like the opportunity to present this new initiative to all parents so we all have a common understanding and approach to educating our children about bullying and supporting them in an appropriate way. To this end we are holding two parent meetings to give you an overview of the programme on Wednesday 6 th February at 3.10pm and then again at 7.00pm. All welcome! Teachers will be holding their Term 1 class meetings over the course of the next three weeks. During the meetings you will have an opportunity to meet or re-connect with the class teacher and the rest of the parents in the class and hear about the impulse for the year, the stage of development the children have reached, the content of the curriculum and any special trips or camps coming up. Please make every effort to attend this important start of year meeting. Finally just a few reminders: Please remember to order your remaining stationery from the office and send in the general sta- tionery items you have purchased during the holidays.

THE Friday FLIER

KOTAHITANGA

Waikato Waldorf School, Kindergartens and Playcircle

Dear Waikato Waldorf Community

It is wonderful to see you all back again at the start of this year. I hope you managed to get a good

break with your families and are ready for a bright and busy new year. I would like to welcome all our

new families into our school community, we look forward to travelling along the same path with you in

the forthcoming years. The pòwhiri yesterday was, as usual, an emotional occasion and it was lovely

to see all the expectant faces of our new Class 1 children and their proud families. A special thank you

needs to go to Te Aroha, Bodie, Mel and Nick for participating in the karanga and mihi, a beautiful and

special ceremony.

So we are starting the new year with a number of new initiatives. In Class 1 Elizabeth is using the

movable classroom concept instead of chairs and tables. A big thank you to Twinny and Tina for the

time and care they have put into making our beautiful handmade wooden benches and to Kat for our

special cushions. Elizabeth will be conducting an inquiry into the use and impact of the movable class-

room and we will let you know how it is all going in future fliers.

We are also launching our new KiVa anti bully programme, as mentioned in our final flier of 2017. All

staff were involved in a training day at the end of last term and we have a specially trained group of

teachers who have formed our KivA team. Please find attached an additional leaflet for your infor-

mation, please note that this programme has been adapted to fit in with our special character so when

the information material refers to short films and computer games we will not be using these but will be

meeting the aims of these sessions by other means. We would also like the opportunity to present this

new initiative to all parents so we all have a common understanding and approach to educating our

children about bullying and supporting them in an appropriate way. To this end we are holding two

parent meetings to give you an overview of the programme on Wednesday 6th

February at

3.10pm and then again at 7.00pm. All welcome!

Teachers will be holding their Term 1 class meetings over the course of the next three weeks. During

the meetings you will have an opportunity to meet or re-connect with the class teacher and the rest of

the parents in the class and hear about the impulse for the year, the stage of development the children

have reached, the content of the curriculum and any special trips or camps coming up. Please make

every effort to attend this important start of year meeting.

Don’t say you saw a bird:, you saw an eagle, or a

big black raven or an oriole.

Don’t tell me that it flew, that’s what any bird can

do:

Say it glided, soared or circled as the storm

brewed.

Don’t say the sky behind the bird was stormy;

It was grey forked with lightning, it was tremen-

dously frightening.

Don’t say the evening creatures were all playing;

Say crickets were clicking like washboards.

Picture moreporks fluffing up ready for the night

Hunting food for the morning light.

Don’t use a word that’s good for all the senses

There’s a word for every feeling one can feel

If you want your lines terrific;

Then do make your words specific,

For words can paint a picture that is real.

The messages brought by the senses

Are among life’s greatest recompenses.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Class Five have used the poem ‘Be Specific’ by M. Applegate to structure some wonderful creative pieces.

They worked in groups and have produced some excellent poetry:

Don’t say you saw a bird, you saw a sparrow,

Or a small shy wrybill, a lark or swallow.

Don’t just tell me that it flew, that’s what any bird can do;

Say it soared, dived, glided or chirped in the morning dew.

Don’t say the sky behind the bird was nice;

It was the colour of blood streaked through with orange juice;

Orange juice from a black and blue bottle;

A bottle with a slightly yellow mottle;

Shining like a golden egg from a golden goose.

Don’t say the evening creatures all were playing;

Mention the field mice scuttling through the long forest grass;

Picture a bat screeching in the moon-lit light;

While you hear the bees humming as you pass.

Don’t use a word that’s good for all the senses

There’s a word for every feeling one can feel

If you want your lines terrific;

Then do make your words specific,

For words can paint a picture that is real.

The messages brought by the senses

Are among life’s greatest recompenses.

Hi all,

We are looking for a carpool from Ngaruawahia to school for Candela Class 7 and Valentine Class 5.

I am a midwife on call 24/7 so not a reliable bet for a ride and their dad leaves at 6 am and comes home after 5 pm (if I am gone their older brother is at home with them).

Currently this year they are taking the bus, but it would be much nicer if they could ride in and back with another family and I could pay petrol.

If anyone is interested please call me 0273484367 or email [email protected]

Kind regards, Tui Lee

Waikato Anthroposophical Reading Group

Dear school families and wider community

New readers welcome!

Our recently formed reading group has enjoyed diving into some ‘Social Three Fold Order’ wisdom from Rudolf Steiner on how to develop harmonious and functional communities and societies, and then we read a trio of Christmas lectures late last year.

Please come along if you are interested - beginners and veterans, all are welcome to join the group at any time. We meet in the evening on second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at Waikato Waldorf School and we’d love to grow our group and welcome some new faces. There is no need to have read anthroposophical lectures before as we take time to reflect and digest the writings of Rudolf Steiner, which can be daunting to do solo.

Next we will complete one further chapter of three fold reading, which has been a rich experience, so pertinent to our everyday lives and contemporary society, its uncanny. Then we will read two or three Easter lectures as we near Easter, which falls quite early this year.

Please contact me if you are interested to hear more or wish to keep informed on upcoming meetings and topics.
