MISSION STATEMENT
The members of the Marion Catholic Community, given life through the Holy
Spirit in Baptism, are called together as a community of faith to praise and worship
God our Creator and to proclaim in word and deed the Gospel message of Jesus
Christ. As members of the Body of Christ we strive to serve all to provide an
atmosphere of hospitality which enables all to respond fully to the lifelong
challenge “to do right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

AMCLUSTER NEWS
Today, Isaiah presents the problem of suffering. Isaiah writing
about the "servant of the Lord" says, "The Lord was pleased to crush
him..." Jesus, fulilling that prophecy, speaks about his coming
"baptism" the humiliation and agony he would endure.
What sense can we make of suffering?
St. Padre Pio, whose feast we recently celebrated, has a helpful im-
age. He invites us to imagine a small boy looking up at his mother do-
ing embroidery. Seeing only knots and tangled threads, he asks his
mother what she is doing. She lowers the embroidery hoop and
shows the good part of her work. Says Padre Pio, "Each color is in
place, and the various threads form a harmonious design."
That's the irst thing we need to say about suffering. We see the
knots and tangles; God sees the embroidery from beginning to end.
There is, however, something we can know: suffering is the curren-
cy of love. After speaking about his "baptism", Jesus says that he did
not come to be served but to serve. Service always involves some
measure of suffering. By deinition a servant does not do his own will.
It's great when two wills come together, but even when they join per-
fectly, as was the case with Jesus and His Father, the suffering can
still be agony. Suffering is the currency of love.
Our buildings will turn to dust, our nations will unravel, but every
act of love, every suffering joined to Jesus will shine forever.
Suffering is like a reverse embroidery and that it is the currency of
love. That's the reason we do not consider useless the suffering ter-
minally ill person. If he or she joins their suffering to the cross, that
love has incalculable value. The Son of Man, says Jesus, did not come
to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.
ST. JOHN HALLOWEEN PARADEis October 31st beginning at
1pm in the church parking lot by the priest’s house...will end at the park

rade.

and for the Protection of all Human Life, from conception to natural
death. Led by Deacon Steve Broering on Monday, October 18th at
6:15pm, after the 5:30pm Mass at St. Sebastian.

What is YOUTH MINISTRY in the Marion Catholic Community?

Our ministry serves the elementary, middle school & high school students of our faith
community and surrounding area. Through youth nights on Sunday, the Liturgy each
week, retreats, service opportunities and youth gatherings, we seek to bring our young
people into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church.

Our goal is to lead our young people closer to Christ. To do that, our focus is on rela-
tional ministry and the Eucharist.

What does that mean?
It means our ministry is focused on building relationshipswith the youth and, in
turn, the youth with Jesus Christ (especially Jesus in the Eucharist)so that real
change and transformation can occur in our young people’s lives.

Why do we do ministry this way?
Because this approach is founded in the Gospels. Jesus called men to follow him as
disciples and eventually those disciples were commissioned and became known as the
11 apostles. The Gospel of Matthew ends with these words of Jesus to the 11 apos-
tles,
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you.And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

COME BE PART OF IT

“Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church,
her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize.” Pope Paul VI

P=>? 9

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR
ORDINARY MOMENTS
What’s in it for me?
I think we’ve all been guilty of
looking at a situation and
wondering what’s in it for us. It
doesn’t matter if it’s a particular
work assignment, someone at the
parish asking for help with the
mission trip bake sale, or your
spouse asking if you’ll take over the
grocery shopping this week. Often,
our first reaction to one of these
requests is a heavy sigh and the
thought: “If I do this, what will I
get?”
Sometimes it surprises us to realize
that the Apostles were no different.
We tend to idolize these
contemporaries of Christ as giants
who walked with the Savior. But in
reality, these individuals were
merely human beings struggling to
commit to the task of everyday
stewardship.
In the Gospels, we see glimpses of
them longing for praise and
affirmation. We see them jockeying
for positions of power within the
group of twelve. We see them
expect earthly rewards like honor
and admiration. We see them acting
a lot like us.
But in the end, we see them
transformed by the grace of God.
Like all the saints, their holiness
stems from their commitment to
their call. They stumble through,
and as they stumble, they keep
trusting God. They keep turning to
Him. They keep asking for help.
They don’t give up just because
they keep failing at it.
We are defined by what we give
when we have no hope of being
reimbursed, rewarded, or
recognized. The Apostles
understood this, eventually, and
they gave accordingly. Most of
them gave their very lives.
Remember, they’re just like us. If
they can do it, we can too.
