WASHINGTON — Homeowners whose mortgage debt waspartly or entirely forgiven during 2007 may be able to claim spe-cial tax relief by filling out newly-revised Form 982 and attachingit to their 2007 federal income tax return, according to theInternal Revenue Service.

Normally, debt forgiveness results in taxable income. But underthe Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, enacted Dec.20, taxpayers may exclude debt forgiven on their principal resi-dence if the balance of their loan was $2 million or less. The limitis $1 million for a married person filing a separate return. Detailsare on Form 982 and its instructions, available now on this Website.

“The new law contains important provisions for struggling home-owners,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Linda Stiff. “We urge peoplewith mortgage problems to take full advantage of the valuable taxrelief available.”

The late-December enactment means that reporting proce-dures for this law change were not incorporated into tax-prepara-tion software or IRS forms. For that reason, people using tax soft-ware should check with their provider for updates that includethe revised Form 982. Similarly, the IRS is now updating its sys-tems and expects to begin accepting electronically-filed returnsthat include.

Form 982 by March 3. The paper Form 982 is now being accepted,but the IRS reminds affected taxpayers to consider filing electron-ically, which greatly reduces errors and speeds refunds.

Debt must have been used to buy, build or substantiallyimprove the taxpayer's principal residence and must have beensecured by that residence. Debt used to refinance qualifying debtis also eligible for the exclusion, but only up to the amount of theold mortgage principal, just before the refinancing.

Borrowers whose debt is reduced or eliminated receive a year-end statement (Form 1099-C) from their lender. For debt can-celled in 2007, the lender was required to provide this form to theborrower by Jan. 31, 2008. By law, this form must show theamount of debt forgiven and the fair market value of any proper-ty given up through foreclosure.

The IRS urges borrowers to check the Form 1099-C carefully.Notify the lender immediately if any of the information shown isincorrect. Borrowers should pay particular attention to theamount of debt forgiven (Box 2) and the value listed for theirhome ( Box 7).

Note: Legislation enacted in October 2008 extended thisrelief through 2012. Thus this relief now applies to debtforgiven in calendar years 2007 through 2012.

Road Trip North to Tallahassee! Tour “The Old Capitol”Tallahassee gets its name from the Apalachee Native American world meaning “land of old fields.” The Apalachee,

the first inhabitants of the region, were an agricultural society. In 1528, an expedition led by Panfilo de Narvaez

brought the first Europeans to Apalachee country. A few years later, Hernando de Soto spent the winter in the area

of the State Capitol Building. Settlers and missionaries followed and as more people came, warfare and disease led

to the demise of the Apalachees. In 1821, Spain ceded Florida to the United States. Tallahassee selected as the center

of government for the territory because it was mid-way between Pensacola and St. Augustine, the two most impor-

tant Florida cities at that time. When Florida officially became a state in 1845, Tallahassee was the logical capital.

Originally built in 1845, this white stucco, neo-Classical building served as Florida's State Capitol until 1978, when

it moved to the modern office building in back. In 1979, the city began to restore the Old Capitol to its 1902 appear-

ance and it opened as a museum in 1982. There are exhibits on Florida's state history and self-guided tours visit the

house and senate chambers, the governor's suite, the Supreme Court and the rotunda. Stop by The Union Bank

just 1 block east and The Museum of Florida History just 3 blocks west.

One of the best decisions upper management can make in healthcare or small business is

to promote from within when hiring managers. Nursing managers, administration man-

agers, operations managers, finance managers, you name it, finding a person within your

organization who is suited for management is no easy task. But promoting from within

saves enormous time when trying to acclimate someone to an organization’s culture. It

also is an incredible motivator to those seeking more in their career.

Here are 5 Tips for Choosing the Right Person for Management

Have a very clearly defined set of expectations for yourself and them before choosing

a manager.

What is it you REALLY want them to do? (help make money is a key component) Write

down those roles and responsibilities well in advance of choosing a manager so the candi-

date fits the job, not visa versa. Make sure these roles and responsibilities align with your

mission.

Management is a people job. Look for a people person first and foremost. They

should have that positive attitude necessary to lead others.

Identify those folks with good people and organizational skills, and with the ability to see

the big picture.

Identify those with a positive outlook and a good sense of humor who demonstrate a “can

do” spirit. They will need these traits when things get tough. Look for people who seek

out the best in others.

Determine who may be interested in accepting more responsibility and taking on a

leadership role by asking.

Tenure, loyalty and friendship are not reasons for putting someone in management posi-

tions. As a matter of fact, those are the three worst reasons to promote someone. Leave

no stone unturned. The quietest person may be just the one. It’s just no one ever asked

them.

Who are those people who are self starters and take personal responsibility for all their

actions?

Seek out people who challenge you and the status quo you don’t want a “mini me”.

“Yes people” are followers – not leaders.

Find the person who understands where you are going and why and wants to be a part of

making that happen.

Develop a management preparedness program so the right people are ready when the

opportunity presents itself.

Have a written training plan for those interested in becoming a manager so they earn the

right to be considered. This is a natural weed out process. Begin delegating people and

project responsibilities to those you are grooming with a follow-up process to measure

their progress.Remember taking the extra time to choose the right person on the front end

will save countless hours of wasted time for you in the future.

A German company, Nanopool has essentially turned glass into a liquid spray

by extracting silicon dioxide from sand and combining it with water or ethanol.

The product can be sprayed on anything from desks to clothes to statues, mak-

ing surfaces antimicrobial and easy to clean. Quantum LiquiGlas is only 100

nanometer thick, which is about 500 times thinner than a human hair and is

resistant to bacteria because the material’s chemical properties make cell

Start Teaching Kids Early to go Green!Starting early will teach some simple things the kids can help

Turning off lights when not in use is a simple one young children can accomplish.

Bring Back Cloth Napkins! !Ok...this one is easy. Buy a pack of cloth napkins. Buy some cool, fun napkin

rings. Let everyone in the family pick out their napkin ring and after dinner, if

the cloth is still pretty clean...drop in a basket designated for the napkins and

reuse them the next night. Wash and start over! Think about how many paper

towels you won’t use in a year!
