THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — JUNE 30, 2019

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

"No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to

what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God." Jesus'

words may seem a bit harsh but are directly on target. The life

of discipleship can be costly. Upholding the tenets of the

Gospel can put us at odds, even with those most close to us.

Jesus never misses an opportunity to spend time with outcasts

and sinners. It matters little to him whether doing so breaks a

Sabbath law. The Gospel may seem unrealistic, but it is the

Gospel nonetheless. We respect the dignity of all persons,

from conception to natural death. We work on behalf of jus-

tice, which calls us to be with the poor, lonely, confused, and

broken. The old "eye for an eye" mentality no longer applies

when it comes to dealing with those who hurt us. When Jesus

asks you to follow him, will you go?

Dear friends in Christ, May the peace of our Lord Jesus be with you always! We are now in the midst of summer,

and July is just around the corner as we return back to the Ordinary Time. High school graduation already celebrated, and high school gradu-ates await for a new adventure to begin. The question is “ are your eyes fix on your chosen path?” The answer for this question must an absolute yes. Luke’s gospel for this weekend directs our attention to Jesus’ atti-tude toward his journey to Jerusalem for his mission. The gospel tells us that Jesus resolutely determined to Jerusalem. In other words, Jesus set his face on going to Jerusalem for his mission, and there is no turning back. Following Jesus as a disciple is not always an easy journey. Luke’s gospel gives us the three examples of “potential disciple”. First, the potential disciple of Jesus must willing to spend a life to follow Jesus wherever he leads. The disciples must know that there will not be a place for them to lay or rest one’s head. He must have an absolute or complete trust in the providence of Jesus. Second, God is the first priori-ty in the life of the disciples. Burying the dead or any unfinished business should be a second place, and finally, there is no turning back. Once we have set or fix our eyes on God, we must move forward and not look back to see what we have left behind. Jesus knows his mission—to re-deem the humanity through his passion and cross at Jerusalem. He is set his face toward Jerusalem. We are the follower of Jesus by the sac-rament of Baptism. Where do we set our face? What is our ultimate destiny? From what will we not look back to see what we have left be-hind? As we celebrate the Fourth of July, may we experience and enjoy God’s gift of freedom. Let us keep in prayers for those who serve our beloved nation, and those who shed their blood to defend our free-dom. Our offices will be closed on Thursday July 4th and will open on Monday July 8 at 9:00 a.m. May you have a blessed week, and Happy 4th of July!

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Question: This time of year, I attend a lot of weddings. Why do Catholic weddings need to take place in a church?

Answer: Technically, there is a clause in Church law that could allow for weddings to take place outside of a church, in a suitable space under special circumstances, but it requires the rare permission of the bishop. But the meaning of marriage goes very, very deep, and the Church has a vested interest in protecting that meaning. As Catholics, we don't see a wedding as an event that needs a pleasing backdrop. Marriage is a sacrament, both an occasion of joyful promise and symbolic solemnity. It is a spiritual event. The loving bond of mar-riage symbolizes the mystical union between Christ and his Church. The man and woman profess lifelong vows of fidelity, and they receive super-natural grace from God to keep their promises. Receiving the sacrament of Marriage in a church has broader symbolic meaning for the couple as well. Marriage isn't simply two people in isolation from the world around them. Marriage is the joining of families and the beginning of a new, holy mission in the life of the couple. Weddings are sacred occasions, and it's fitting that they occur in sacred spaces.

INDEPENDENCE DAY—Today throughout the United States, we celebrate our freedom. Our rights are protected and opportunities abound. We recognize that freedom has a cost, one we celebrate and honor on days such as this. It's good to honor those who fight for our country, who may well

pay the ultimate price for the liberties we're afforded. As faithful Catholics, we recognize that there is more to freedom than simply being at liberty to make our lives what we want them to be. St. John Paul II reminds us: "Freedom is not just doing what we can, it is doing what we ought." We become freer within ourselves and within our relationships when we choose what is right and good. When we choose sin, we become trapped in egoism - less free, not more. This Independence Day, let's continue to pursue virtue and good character and encourage others to do this same.

SAINT THOMAS, THE APOSTLE—Even though we do not know St. Thomas’ birthday, his feast day is July 3. St. Thomas is the doubting one who was skeptical in Jesus’ resurrection. He demand-ed to see the nail marks on Jesus’ body and to put his hands on the side of Jesus. When Jesus ap-peared to the disciples the second time, he asked Thomas to put his finger in the nail marks and hand on his side. Seeing Jesus, Thomas came to believe in Jesus’ resurrection. His exclamation statement “My Lord and my God” became the profession of his faith in Jesus. St. Thomas is a patron saint of architects, Argentina, construction workers, and cooks

THE FEAST OF STS. PETER & PAUL

Lord Jesus Christ, you called Saint Peter from a life he knew,

to follow you alone, giving up all he’d known before. Despite his failings and lack of faith in you and himself,

you entrusted to him the keys of the kingdom of heaven, granting him such faith that he embraced martyrdom.

You called Saint Paul from the life he knew, a life of such zeal that he became misguided,

hurting you by hurting those who followed you. You changed him from an angry persecutor

to the greatest missionary the Church has ever seen, and to one who welcomed death as the means to see you.

When I am called to do your will, change my spirit and grant that I can give up the little you ask of me,

when Peter and Paul gave so much. Amen.
