THE VILLAGE NEWS
BELMONT VILLAGE OF ALBANY
DECEMBER 2017
MICHELLE MOROSExecutive Director
As 2017 wraps up and we lookto the new year, many of us willset new goals. Maybe toimprove physical well-being likeexercising more and eatingbetter or improving mentalwell-being, like thinkingpositively or laughing moreoften. It may sound like oldadvise, but writing down yourgoals and developing a gameplan increases your chances toachieve them.
Earlier this year, BelmontVillage launched a Bright IdeaCompetition encouragingemployees across the countryand Mexico to put pen to paperwith their innovative ideas. Thefocus of this competition was toengage our staff, tap into theirimaginations and inspire them. Our teams work every day in our
communities and have real,hands-on practical experiences. What better resource forinnovative ideas can a companyhave then their own employees?Over 200 Bright Ideas werereceived company-wide, and Iam proud to announce thatthree of the five finalists are partof our Albany Team! Eachfinalist won $500 and will travelto our home office in Houston,Texas, in January to presenttheir ideas. The Grand Prizewinner will receive another $500and a trip to Puerto Vallarta,Mexico, and their idea will beimplemented into BelmontVillage Senior Living.
Please join me incongratulating our Bright Ideafinalists Veronica Loera, TaniyaBishop and Erika Soto.
May your holidays be filledwith peace, joy and love. And avery Happy New Year toeveryone.

IT’S THAT TIME OFYEAR AGAIN!
The holidays are here, andunfortunately so is flu season.
Influenza season beginssometime in the late fall, usually
peaks over the winter, andbegins to wane in the spring.
The influenza virus is acontagious respiratory illness
that can infect the throat, nose, and possibly the lungs. As ourimmune defenses decline with
age, those over 65 and older areat a greater risk for
complications including sinusand ear infections, bacterial
pneumonia, and worsening ofchronic conditions such as
asthma, diabetes, or congestiveheart failure.
The flu is spread mainly bydroplets, for instance when aperson sneezes, coughs, or talks. The flu can also be spread whena person touches a surface orobject that has the flu viruses, then touches their own nose ormouth. In fact, you could passthe flu to someone before youare even aware you are sick.
However, people are typicallymost contagious in the first 3-4days after becoming ill. Signsand symptoms of the flu includefever, sore throat, cough, stuffyor runny nose, headache, bodyor muscle ache, and fatigue.
The best way to prevent theflu is to get vaccinated. Fluvaccines are updated eachseason to keep up with the virusas it changes to ensure the bestprotection against influenza. TheCDC also recommends takingpreventive actions, includingstaying away from people whoare sick, frequent hand washing, and covering coughs andsneezes. Take theserecommended steps to have ahappy and healthy holidayseason!
