By William Johnstone with J.A. Johnstone

When Duff MacCallister sees smoke rising from his neighbor’s ranch, he knows that something is very wrong. But he isn’t prepared for what he finds: smoldering buildings, a rancher and his wife brutally slaughtered, and a 14-year-old survivor who could not save her parents. Now, Duff is going after the killers—and his only companion is the headstrong girl who refuses to be left behind.

Duff and his new companion head into the towering Gore Range. Up ahead are two con-victed murderers who were about to be hung in Cheyenne, and the killers who broke them lose. Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI — Adult Non Fiction By David Gran

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage In-dian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. And it was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances. In this last remnant of the Wild West many of those who dared to investigate the killings

were themselves murdered. As the death toll climbed to more than twenty-four, the FBI took up the case. It was one of the organization's first major homicide investigations and the bureau badly bungled the case. In desperation, the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to unravel the mystery. Together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. — Provided by publisher

Prussian Blue — Adult Large Print Fiction By Phillip Kerr

The French Riviera, 1956: The invitation to dinner was not unexpected, though neither was it welcome. But chance intervenes in the form of Friedrich Korsch, an old Kripo comrade now working for Stasi who is probably there to make sure Bernie gets the job done.

The summer of 1939: At Hitler’s mountaintop retreat in Obersalzberg, the body of a low-level bu-reaucrat has been found murdered. Bernie and Korsch are selected to run the case.

1939 and 1956: two different eras, seventeen years apart. And yet, not really apart, as the stun-ning climax will show when the two converge explosively. — Provided by publisher

Be the One — Young Adult Fiction

By Byron Pitts

Emmy Award–winning ABC News chief national correspondent and Nightline co-anchor, Byron Pitts shares the heartbreaking and inspiring stories of six young people who overcame impossible circumstances with extraordinary perseverance.

Abuse. Bullying. War. Drug Addiction. Mental Illness. Violence.

None of these should be realities for anyone, much less a young person. But for some it is the only reality they have ever known. In these dark circumstances, six teens needed someone to “be the one” for them—the hero to help them back into the light. For Tania, Mason, Pappy, Michaela, Ryan, and Tyton, that hero was themselves. Through stirring interviews and his award-winning storytelling, Byron Pitts brings the struggles and triumphs of these everyday heroes to teens just like them, encouraging all of us to be the source of inspiration in our own lives and to appreciate the lives of others around us. — Provided by publisher

Raise a Reader with Fun Van

It takes longer for children who are just learning to talk to respond to our questions. This happens because four different parts of the brain have to work together for your child to form a response to what you say. We need to be patient and wait anywhere from 5-12 sec-onds for children to respond. That feels like a long time because adults usually respond in about 2 seconds. The extra time you give children allows them the practice they need to respond more quickly over time. — Saroj Ghoting, Early Childhood Literacy Consultant

Eat Up! — Juvenile Non Fiction By Antonia Banyard and Paula Ayer

Most North American kids don’t know enough about their food. Eat Up!, a colorful infographic look at the many surprising and fascinating facts about food, strives to change that. Readily accessible graphics and brief but clear explanations address topical issues such as food waste, nutrition, and the environmental impact of food. Readers will find answers to a wide range of questions, including: Who grows our food? Where does our meat and fish come from? How does it get to us? How do food companies advertise to children?

Kids will also discover:

• How our sense of taste works (and sometimes tricks us); • The link between farming and pollution; • What happens to food from the time it is farmed until it reaches our tables.

Vibrant illustrations, diagrams, and photos make this an indispensable introduction to all aspects of food for curious kids everywhere, including reluctant or struggling readers. — Provided by publisher
