Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu in the Thirty Years War

Because of his religious upbringing, Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu chose to support the Holy Roman Empire on their Catholic side of the war.Opposing both the King and the Cardinal, were the Huguenots who posed a threat to the Catholic followers.Despite planning an attack on the Huguenots, Cardinal Richelieu signed the Treaty of La Rochelle in 1626, however this only delayed the attack for the time being. The attack of La Rochelle was led by Louis XIII and eventually occurred in 1628 and established the power of French government and the King.Despite the threats of Huguenots throughout the country, Cardinal Richelieus main priority was keeping and building the integrity of France as a whole.
