This Week’s Main School News

Visit to Taizé in July 2020In the coming week, Dan Finn, from the Archbishop of York’s Youth Trust, will be speaking to KS4 and post 16 students about an exciting opportunity they can be a part of. The Dean of York Minster is leading a group of young people from the Yorkshire region to visit Taizé in Eastern France (Burgundy) and students from Archbishop Holgate’s School have been invited to accompany him and the group. Many of you will know that a small cohort from Archbishop Holgate’s have joined Archbishop Sentamu over the last four years. His first visit was one coachload and this has now grown to several coaches full of young people. We shall be joining students from many UK schools, and young people from all over Europe. There will be several thousand young people of different backgrounds meeting at Taizé: those who are Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, believers of other religions, and those of no faith. Each day includes a reflection in a larger group led by a brother of the Community, small international discussion groups, some practical activity, prayer with the whole community and opportunities to socialise and relax and make new friends. The cost of visit is very small, £135 for a week in France. This is because a large part of the costs are paid for by a charitable bequest and the Taizé Brothers try to keep the cost of visiting as low as possible. You will need a little pocket money for any personal purchases. We will depart on Saturday 4 July, returning on Monday 13 July, the penultimate week of term. Students will need a valid UK passport and a European Health Insurance Card. Since there are a limited number of places any student who wishes to go on the visit will need to write a brief letter of application stating the reasons why they wish to participate, what skills and attributes they will bring to the group and what they think they will learn from the experience. The letter needs to be returned on or before Monday 16 December. If any student or parent would like more information, please contact Mr Nihill before the deadline. The visit is only available to students in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13. An information letter may be collected from Reception or the RE office. Those who are successful in their application for a place will be informed shortly afterwards and will then complete necessary paperwork. A non-refundable deposit of £35 will need to be paid via Wisepay at the start of January if students have been informed they have a place. A video of a previous visit can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmnvOdUELH0&feature=youtu.be or search Taize Youth Trust Video

Message from Head of Year 11As the Christmas break draws ever closer, we have now reached the end of the first significant hurdle for Year 11 this year. In terms of general conduct, the PPEs (Pre-Public Exams) for Year 11 have been a great success and they have continued from the very high standards they set themselves from the Year 10 Exams. Students will receive their grades on ‘Mock Results Day’ on the morning of Monday 20 January. From this point, students really will need to consider their ‘Next Steps’ to ensure success in the summer exams and beyond.Shortly after PPE results day, there will be the first Year 11 Parents’ Evening of the year on Wednesday 22 January. This will provide staff with the opportunity to provide specific feedback on the PPEs, consider areas for development and a specific plan moving forward. Furthermore, there will be a Year 11 Success Fayre on the evening of Monday 30 January. This will give parents the opportunity to come into school and speak to staff about the specific requirements of each course students study and how parents can give support as they prepare for exams in the future.Based on the feedback from Parents’ Evening and the Success Fayre, students will undergo another series of PPEs, but this time only in their core subjects of English, Maths and Science. These exams will commence Monday 10 February. To further support students, as was the case before the previous PPEs, the Period 6 Programme will start again from Monday 20 January. As a reminder, the timetable of sessions is as follows…Monday MathsTuesday Geography, History, Computing, MFL and all other option subjects (no longer on a two week rotation)Wednesday ScienceThursday EnglishFriday Open choice of subjectsThese are taught sessions across the full range of subjects and students should take advantage of these to supplement their revision as much as possible. Students will be strongly advised to attend by subject teachers and pastoral team based on the outcome of the November/December PPE results. As a more general reminder, you can help support your child during the Year 11 PPE period by:• Ensuring they are in school every day – 100% attendance makes a significant difference to their chance of success• Avoid any routine dental or medical appointments that could be scheduled outside the school day. There have been quite a few dental appointments during this recent PPE period and I must stress that it would greatly beneficial to avoid non-emergency appointments at any cost• Ask your child about their revision and what they have been focusing on this week – students have been advised to focus on a ‘little and often’ approach where they return to knowledge at regular intervals to ensure it is retained in their memory. At this point, they should then begin working on past paper questions.• Provide a quiet place for your child to work, or contact school and speak to me if this is difficult; it can be arranged for students to complete some of their work in school. As well as the wealth of opportunities open to students, we as a school and as a pastoral team are mindful of the pressure some of our students put themselves under during this year. We are keen that students are supported, both at school and at home, to do their very best. Should concerns be raised about the effort levels of a student in the New Year, additional support will be put in place by the school. A meeting with parents will be scheduled to flag up concerns in advance and a plan of action will be put in place to help your child to be successful. As I have previously mentioned, we are very proud of the provision developed to support KS4 students through their GCSE and BTEC exams and hope that your child will benefit from the support that has been put in place. I am confident that support from home and support from school will allow the Year 11 students to realise their potential and I do hope students take lessons from their PPE results and work hard to remedy any problems they have encountered. Alongside myself and the Year 11 tutor team, parents can also contact Mr Deamer (Pastoral Support Worker); Ms Hirst (Pastoral Support Worker) and Miss McDermott, as the Deputy Head in charge of student progress, with any concerns or feedback they wish to share about the support in place for Year 11. Mr Arthur

Science RevisionScience Period 6 revision continues in preparation for the Pre-public Exams. We would like as many students as possible to attend. Lessons will be bespoke to each pupils’ tier of entry and will address the key concepts to be examined in the paper, please encourage your child to attend. Students should check the rooming notice in Science for their course (Trilogy/Triple) and their tier of entry (Foundation/Higher) as well as the notices each Wednesday morning. The schedule is as follows:

Year 9 – CurriculumStudents in Year 9 have continued their academic journey this year through engaging with the transition year. Within the transition year, students develop key skills that underpin higher order concepts within future KS4 teaching.Personal development is also rooted in the Year 9 curriculum through character and culture lessons, curriculum enrichment opportunities, ICT, PSHCE, creative arts and STEM enrichment trips to external organisations/providers across the country.Whilst formal teaching of GCSE material will commence when students move into Year 10, after the Christmas holidays it will no longer be possible to facilitate any changes to the subjects that students are currently studying. If you have any concerns or queries please contact Mr Green-Harding, Deputy Head Curriculum.

Christmas Dinner, Wednesday 18 DecemberChristmas Lunch will be served in school on Wednesday 18 December, cost of the meal will be £2.55 (menu below). This is always a great event and one students really enjoy.

KS3 Student CouncilThe student council are well underway with their climate change actions. They are currently finalising the three priorities for the school with their forms. Students are exploring strategies which may include: • Reducing the amount of single use plastic within the canteen • Raising the profile of long term effects of energy waste • Introducing form specific responsibilities to improve the local environment • Running a “lights off” campaign

The student council have also had the opportunity to feedback on issues which have concerned them. These included: • A concern about the number of toilets in school. Action: The number of toilets accessible to students will increase with the new building. • Opportunities to reflect upon student’s mental health. Action: Further information about the Mental Health Champions and the Wellbeing Zone were provided. • Concerns about the amount of paper used within school. Action: Staff to reflect upon when and why they use paper in and outside of lessons.

Prefects The Prefects are well underway with their individual projects. Summaries are below:

Climate Impact GroupSupporting the work of the KS3 council, Prefects are leading a campaign to reduce waste within school, with a specific focus on single use plastics. They are currently working on a whole school petition, which has over 400 signatures at the moment, to stop selling plastic bottles in the canteen. They are also working to plan and produce a large sculpture of all the plastic bottles in school in order to raise the issues of waste.

Charity Group The charity group are looking at ways to raise the profile of the school’s charities and are producing resources which will be shared with students to deepen their actual understanding of charity, why they are donating the impact this can have. They want students to have a greater understanding of what raising and giving actually is and how this can move beyond cash donations.

Student Voice One Prefect is trialling “student voice stations” around school to provide all students with more opportunities to raise concerns on a regular basis.

The Mental Health Group The group continue their work around mental wellbeing and the “Mental Health Champions”, going into assemblies to raise the profile of mental health and continuing to support the creation of the new Wellbeing Zone.

Further updates to follow!

Year 10 Enrichment Trip to LondonThere are still spaces available on the Year 10 trip to London for Enrichment week 2020. Please return forms and deposits to Sixth Form Reception as soon as possible.

Christmas HampersCourtney Lofthouse, one of our Year 11 students, has volunteered to collect items to go into hampers for families that would benefit from a little extra help at this time of year. Courtney, along with Ms Hirst, would be very grateful if Year 11 students could bring in a little something to go into these hampers – things like sweets, chocolates, biscuits, crackers, tins of fruit or meat, bottles of juice , crisps, toiletries etc… If you have any spare gifts or games that you have bought throughout the year and do not need any more, please also donate these. Hampers will be delivered on the last day of this term (Friday 20 December), so any donations before then would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

RHS Green Plan-It CompetitionSix students have been getting creative, designing a school garden for the RHS competition, Green Plan-It. They came up with a theme of ‘enjoying wildlife whilst relaxing with friends’ and presented their ideas to a panel of expert judges at an event organised by Harlow Carr, in Harrogate. Previously, they had written a report and produced a model to use to help explain their ideas. The judges were impressed with how they had tackled like climate change issues and how they had produced ideas they would like to use in stands at the Chelsea Flower Show! Accolades indeed. Although we received no prizes this year the group are already full of ideas for next year’s entry! The group have been keen Allotment Club members and are currently in Years 8 and 9. The design was based on a space at the back of the allotment that has been neglected for a number of years! Perhaps they will see their ideas become a reality! Overall the students were amazing, working together and independently to meet the deadlines! Follow the Allotment Club activity @AHS_allotment.

Cape Town ExpeditionThank you to everyone who sponsored the Cape Town Crew for their walk; if any of you are Christmas shopping (or just regular shopping) in Morrisons on Monday 9 December, students will be packing your bags between 4.30–9.00pm.

We continue to try and improve our school environment and challenge climate change through practical measures. Alongside the campaigns against plastic in school, students have been on a tree planting mission. In case you missed it in York Press, see below.

PUPILS fighting climate changeby planting hundreds of trees

The youngsters from Archbishop Holgate’s CE School in Badger Hill have planted 105 trees in the school grounds to support the Woodland Trust’s Big Climate Fightback campaign. The tree planting event was organised by the schools’ Green Leaders, a Sixth Form action group, who are keen to see the school community reduce its environmental impact. Amelia Barber, Bailey McBride, Edith Pearse and Sophie Eastwood are all Green Leaders. Collectively they said: “Any small step is worth it when it comes to reducing our impact on the planet.” The Green Leaders have been helped by students from across the school who are all determined to improve their local environment and enable the school to do its bit to help tackle climate change. The Big Climate Fightback campaign aims to get a million people to plant a tree to help reduce carbon emissions, fight flooding and reduce pollution. The trees were donated to the school by the Woodland Trust who have sent out over 700,000 trees to schools and communities across the country to support tree planting events.

Sixth Form Sleep OutLast Friday, after a fabulously festive Christmas Fayre, a group of intrepid Sixth Form students (39 of them) chose to put their determination and resilience to the test by opting to spend a less than comfortable night on the hard ground of the Spiritual Garden. And they chose to pay for the privilege of sleeping outside on what has subsequently proven to be the coldest night of the year so far. The thermometer froze to the bench it was placed on and the needle fell down to minus 3 degrees. Nicky Gladstone, Manager of Carecent, led the students in an interactive talk highlighting homelessness in York and the work of Carecent in befriending and feeding the more vulnerable members of the York community. Many thanks to the parents, friends and students who sponsored the students in their sleep out, especially to East Cottingwith Choir and the congregation of St Aelred’s. If people would like to donate money directly please go to the website: www.carecent.org. Mr Priestnall from Carecent wrote to say: “On behalf of the staff, volunteers and customers of Carecent, I am writing to thank you for your donation to our work following this years’ sleep-out. We particularly appreciate your determination to go ahead on one of the coldest nights we have had recently. Your support and your prayers mean a great deal to us.”

AHS Community ChoirFinal rehearsal for the Community Choir on Tuesday 10 December with Miss Moore in L37 (upstairs in the Sixth Form building) 3.25–4.15pm (please sign in at Main School Reception on arrival). Any questions, please contact either Miss Moore or Mrs Newton via: [email protected] or [email protected].

Rewards and Recognition

PLEASE SHARE: If you would like to share students’ achievements and events in the community, please email [email protected]. It’s always nice to celebrate our school community.

School CaptainsIt was not an easy decision this year, the calibre of interview was remarkable. Mr Daly and I took away a huge list of ideas we hope to execute with the help of the new Student Leader team.

Our well deserving and exception School Captains are Amelia Barber and Olivia Stevens. I am so excited to work with these very inspirational young women and the driven Student Leader team.

I am sad to see Archie Mortar and Maia Kazakova Garcia leave their posts to focus on the remainder of their Year 13 study, but they have been a pleasure to work with and have passed on the baton to safe hands. Thank you for your service.

Sleep RoughWell done to the Sixth Former students who braved the sub-zero temperatures last Friday night to sleep in the Spiritual Garden to raise money for Carecent. They had a great time and took a lot from the experience.

Year 13 Mock examsMock exams commence on Monday for Year 13. Students must arrive 10 minutes before each start time and have their exam number with them to locate their seat. We wish them luck, but we are confident their hard work will not require any luck! (Copy of timetable included in this Newsletter.)

RugbyThe Y10 boys competed against Vale of York in a rugby fixture on Wednesday night and came away with a convincing victory. The boys proved to be too strong and skilful for the opposition with a large majority of the team managing to get over the try line. Particular standouts were Kyle Hudson and Benji Sellers for their constant strong carries with the ball. However, the highlight of the game came from Yonese Lazrak, who ran towards the opposition defensive line and then threw the ball behind his own head and backheeled the ball over the defensive line, he then ran through the defence to collect the ball and score the try. This was an unbelievable piece of individual skill.

Polite ReminderStudents will be asked to remove ALL jewellery for PE lessons. This is a health and safety precaution and must be adhered to. Thank you.

School PE KitA reminder that all PE kit should be clearly named. If a student misplaces any PE kit, this makes it easier to return items to their rightful owner.

BasketballThe Y8 team headed away to Millthorpe to face a very strong and experienced side. From the beginning, it was clear that the game was going to be too far out of our reach, but despite this, the Archies team gave a 100% effort and never gave up. As the game went on the players began to put together some excellent passing moves. Despite losing the game there are a lot of positives we can take away from the performance. Well done for everyone’s dedicated efforts!

OF THE WEEK

Communism: A theory or system of social organisation in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs. “Communism began to unravel in Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany.”

@AHS_allotment: We’ve arrived at the celebration event! A wee bit nervous but enjoying the setting!! @AHSYork @RHSSchools #greenPlanit

NetballThe Y9 netballers were on WINNING form this week playing away at Vale of York. This is the first game this season they have managed to produce a win, which could have gone either way, it was a close match ending 7-6. Well done to everyone that took part, star players: Jessica Dickinson and Maya Hood.

The Y9 boys took part in a tournament against Huntingdon, Vale of York and Fulford. They came away with very convincing wins against the Huntingdon and Vale of York sides and were narrowly beaten by a last minute try against a very strong Fulford side. There were some very impressive performances from the boys who had a mix of Y8/9 within the side. Standouts were: Josh Nicholson and Keigan Cumberland.
