† Voting in the upcoming Election: I don’t think there is a

thinking person in the USA who finds the decision on who to

vote for in the upcoming election a difficult experience.

Difficult because the candidates both present to us

personalities that get under our skin and platforms that rankle

our consciences. I am reminded of the people of Israel who

had been conquered by Babylon and carted off into exile to

that foreign land by King Nebuchadnezzar only to be freed

some years later by the Persian King Cyrus. Cyrus was a pagan

but he freed the people and allowed them to return to the

promised land and even sent along funds to help rebuild the

destroyed Temple. God actually worked through that pagan

king. And the Prophets say as much. God can work through

the candidate of ill repute. There is one value that is up for

grabs in this election that has not gotten a lot of attention in

the vitriol of our two candidates. This the issue that

undergirds all others and is vastly qualitatively more serious.

It is a value that is not just kind of more important...it is

absolutely more important. If one of our candidates were to

say that immigrants who come to America and takes jobs thus

denying me a livelihood ought to be executed for that crime...

how could you support such a candidate? If one of our

candidates were to say that people of color who are able to

get ahead of white candidates in a college selection process

because of affirmative action ought to be executed because I

am being denied my right to a good education...how could

we support that candidate? Yes there is a platform in this

election that is doing just that. Its just that the perpetrator is a

baby and the injustice, someone is being denied convenience

or comfort. St. Teresa of Kolkata (Mother Teresa) told us we

were truly a poor country that could not afford to take care

of the most vulnerable. She who knew real poverty called us

poor. Our country is going to pot on the heels of having

given up the protection of the most vulnerable human beings

in the world...the unborn. Recently people were scandalized

by the mom who threw her just-born baby out a second floor

apartment window. Why should there be such a reaction...yet

no reaction from the media or the population at large when

that same baby could have been easily and legally ripped

from its mothers womb, its brains sucked out and its little

body cut up for so much fetal matter to be used in some thirst

to cure a disease. I know there may very well be a woman

reading this article who has had an abortion in their past. The

Lord is so merciful that even your sin can be forgiven. But it

takes courage to face the truth of what you did and come to

seek forgiveness and healing in the Sacrament of

Reconciliation. Forgiveness and healing is ready for you in the

confessional. No priest will condemn you. The real sadness is

that women are scarred for life by the choice of abortion. No

one in the pro abortion — Prochoice world cares to hear of

this emotional trauma, but the Catholic Church knows it is

there and it stands with you in your pain and wants you to

know, you are loved by this wonderful merciful God.

FIRST RECONCILIATION: A First Confession Retreat and Practice for second graders and parents will be held Sunday, November 6th at 1:00 p.m. at church. First Confession will be Sunday, November 13th at 1:00 p.m.

In Nebraska another item on the ballot is the Death Pen-

alty. Our Bishops and our Popes since Saint Pope John

Paul II have taught that in this society, with our ability to

protect society, the choice of death for even heinous

crimes is not justified. I have had the privilege of meeting

people who have every reason to seek death for the per-

petrator of a crime that took the life of one of their

loved ones...and I have seen them speak of the value of

letting go and not seeking revenge. Read your Catholic

Voice on this issue and learn why the church has the

stand it does on this issue.

† Wednesday Confessions: The KC’s have moved their

meeting time in the winter and this will make the Fourth

Wednesday Confession time difficult. I do want to at-

tend their meetings if at all possible. I am holding more

meetings for various reasons and this is making the

Wednesday confession schedule more and more prob-

lematic. I am studying the issue and starting to think of

some other options. One is: 5:30 pm-6:00 pm Tuesday,

Wednesday and Thursday. I do want to offer more times

for confession. So, I am thinking about this...right now, I

have made no decision.

† Holy Days Coming: Tuesday, Nov. 1 is All Saints Day.

Masses are 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, 8:05 a.m. on

Tuesday, Nov. 1 and 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1. All

Souls Day we will have two masses: 8:05 a.m. and 7:00

pm. 7:00 p.m. is the Mass when we do some special re-

membrances of all those who have been buried from our

Church this past year.

† Special Remembrance of the Dead: We are going to

place two tables in the Sanctuary for you to place the

pictures of the deceased in your family that you want to

remember. Bring these pictures on All Saints Day. The

pictures must be framed in some way, no bigger than

5X7, and able to stand up on their own. Please put your

name on them so they can be returned if your forget to

pick them up. These pictures will form a kind of Family

Portrait of our Parish, Members who have gone before us

marked with the sign of faith. We will leave these up in

church and ask that you take the pictures home on Sun-

day, Nov. 13. During this time we will have candles

burning for the ones who have died this past year. Fam-

ily members can take this candle home on Nov. 13th.
