If you were a part of our church in November 2014, you might remember thatwe dedicated the entire month of worship services to mission. I and severalothers, including several of the missionaries we support, spoke over a periodof five weeks about how God is moving in many places around the world. ThisNovember, we are not dedicating a month's worth of worship services to mis-sion, but it doesn't lessen the importance of mission in any of our minds, leastof all in the minds of our church's Mission Team.

This Sunday, November 15, the special mission focus in my sermon is on thePersecuted Church. In our own country, where we have free speech, free as-sembly, and freedom of religion, we are (relatively) free of persecution. How-ever, in many other countries around the world, whether because of totalitariangovernments, radical Islamist movements, or other causes, people are not

only not free to practice their Christian faith, they put themselves in danger bydoing so. It is important for those of us who are free to practice our faith to ad-vocate, support, and pray for those who are not.

On the first Sunday of December, December 6, our Mission Team will sponsorour Mission Fair. This will be a great time to meet with some of our missionar-ies (those who are located not too far away) and see and hear material fromothers. It is always important to us to know how our funds are being used, andto know what great things the Lord is doing through these myriad projects.Please make sure you are present on the morning of December 6!

We support our various mission projects through Faith Promise. Some-times people get "Faith Promise" and "Family Promise" mixed up, and it'seasy to see why since the names are so similar. Faith Promise (we hadour name first!) is the fund, separate from our budget, which collects andthen disburses the funds to our various mission partners based on thediscernment of our Mission Team, under the able leadership of Pat Braun.

Family Promise is the organization we support (in part through Faith

Promise funds) in Monroe County which assists homeless families byproviding temporary shelter in various churches (including our own)throughout the year.

Our Faith Promise goal for 2015 is $30,000, and in order to meet all of ourcommitments, we are in need of another $6,550 by the end of the year. Inaddition, our Bishop, Peggy A. Johnson, has called upon all of our church-es to have offerings or fundraisers for our denomination-wide mission pro-gram called, Imagine NO Malaria (INM). INM has raised more than $66Million toward the goal of $75 Million to help eradicate malaria in ourworld. I was reminded just this past Tuesday about the importance of get-ting rid of malaria. I went to give blood as I always do at our Red CrossBlood Drive in Fellowship Hall, and was turned away for an entire year,

even though the Red Cross desperately needs my O-negative blood.

Why? Because Karen and I had recently gone to the Dominican Republic,and malaria is still active there. Despite all the testing that occurs with do-nated blood, there is still no accurate test which can guarantee a blooddonation is 100% malaria free within a year of the donor having been ex-posed. This shows how the effects of malaria can be felt even in a First -World country because of how connected we are in today's world.

Karen and I saw first-hand the effectiveness of INM. One of the countriesin Africa where our INM program has been most successful is Sierra Leo-ne. Sierra Leone was temporarily side-tracked by the Ebola crisis, but isnow back to its long-term strategy of fighting malaria and other tropicaldiseases. When we were there in April 2014, we spent an hour with theUnited Methodist bishop, John Yambasu. I specifically asked Bishop

Yambasu how INM had impacted his country, and he described all theamazing things which had happened in his country to help combat malar-ia, and the number of lives saved because of our successful fundraising.

Bishop Johnson has asked each congregation to contribute $10 per wor-shiping member. For our church, that would be $2500. Combined withthe $6,550 we need to raise for Faith Promise, this is almost $10,000 inmission dollars we need to raise by the end of the year . We can do it !Pastor Mike Slaughter calls on members of his congregation in Ging-hamsburg, Ohio, to give at least as much to Jesus on his birthday as peo-ple give to all of their family. This is inspiring and makes a lot of sense tome. What if each of us were to give as much to Faith Promiseand Imagine NO Malaria as we give to our family members this year? Itcould be transformative, and make a huge difference to those in need.

This is how it will work: If you make a financial gift to Faith Promise, theMission Team will sort it out. The first $6,550 will go to Faith Promise, thenext $2500 will go to Imagine NO Malaria, and if there is more left over, itwill become seed money for the work of Faith Promise in 2016. As we getready to celebrate Jesus' birthday in six short weeks, let us remember thatthe face of Jesus is on every child in Family Promise and every childharmed by malaria, and every person touched by our Faith Promise com-mitments. New Members Class. Three sessions on consecutive Sunday

SWAT - Seasoned Workers Action TeamThe next meeting will be on Monday,November 23 at 9 a.m. We had a poorturnout in October, I know who wasmissing, and a report will be turned in asto your un-excused absence. Youth Praise Band

Doug Malefyt--director of con-temporary worship, has agreedto work with any youth who havean interest in singing or playingan instrument in the youth praise

band.

All levels are welcome, and wewill start practicing and gettingtogether in a few weeks!

Practices will be on Wednesdayevenings, typically twice amonth. The best part is thatYouth Praise band will be prac-ticing right before the AdultPraise Team's practicetime. This will allow for other

adult leaders to help as neededwith the youth praise band.
