    Dear Friends,

This week, a scene from a comedy movie keptplaying over and over in my head. The film is abouta couple, Brooke and Gary, whose relationship ispretty rocky, if not headed for complete disaster. Thescene that kept playing in my head was a scene inwhich this young couple was bickering about whoshould wash the dishes. Brooke was frustrated thatGary didnt want to help out with the householdchores. Why cant you do this one little thing forme? she asked. You wantme to do the dishes? Gary replied. No!I want you to wantto do the dishes!Brooke shot back. Gary was flabbergasted. Whywould I wantto do the dishes?!?

A lot of us can probably understand where Gary is

coming from. Who wants to do the dishes? Whowants to do chores of any kind, really, when there arefar more entertaining ways to spend your time? Wecan probably understand why Gary isnt particularlyinterested in helping out with the chores, and whyhes somewhat confused by the notion that he shouldwantto do chores. But we can understand Brookespoint of view as well. She wants their relationship tobe a partnership. She wants Gary to pitch in and helpwith the chores, not because he has been nagged orguilted into doing it, but rather because he feels a

sense of commitment and wants to be an equal part-ner in their relationship. She wants him to serve not out of a sense of obliga-tion, but rather as an expression of his love anddedication.

Blockbuster comedy aside, this film seems tohave touched on a spiritual truth. As Christians, weknow we are called to be servants but often, Ithink we are unsure as to what our motivationsshould be. Often, we feel obligated to serve.Nagged, guilted either by God or by our fellowhuman beings. We serve, grudgingly, because wefeel like we have to. We seldom serve freely, joy-fully, or cheerfully.

We know that God wants us to alleviate suffer-ing, to meet the needs of our neighbors, to serve thechurch, and to give generously. But I think Goddoesnt just want us to do these things. I think Godwants us to wantto do these thingsnot out of asense of guilt or obligation, but rather as an expres-sion of our commitment. This requires a change ofperspective, a change in priorities. I think Godwants us to view each occasion to serve not as atime of drudgery, but rather as an opportunity to re-spond to the love and grace that God has shown toeach one of us. God doesnt just want us to volun-teer; God wants us to be committedservants.

Throughout the next month, we will be spendinga great deal of time exploring what it means to be aservant here at East Stroudsburg United MethodistChurch and throughout Gods world. I invite you touse this month as a time to examine your own life.Ask yourself:Am I giving myself to God in service?

When I serve, is my mind dis-

    tracted and my heart resentful?

Or, am I serving with joy, as areflection of Gods love for me

    and my commitment to God?

Page 4OurCore Values unifies whowe are. At East Stroudsburg UnitedMethodist Church, we understandthat the vital movement of faithand practice is ministry. All per-sons are called to ministry by Godinto the local and global commu-nity. As the Body of Christ, we

believe each person should discoverand use his or her particular spiri-tual gifts in ministry. In order toaccomplish our belief, we must be apermission-giving Church. Permis-sion-giving always asks, Does(this ministry) embrace our mission

and fulfill our vision? This is why we have our annual Every Member in Ministry

Commitment Program. We are all called to use our time, talents andtreasure in service to God. As we surrender our lives to God and

serve together, people are helped and God is honored. This year we will have a new look and time-frame for our com-

mitment program. We are working towards changing the commit-ment year from January through December to September throughAugust. In order to make this change, your commitment will takeplace from January 1, 2011 through August 31, 2011.

This year the Commitment Card will be listed in categories tohelp us better understand and implement our vision.

Grow - We are all called as servants to help each other growspiritually. 2 Peter 3:18, But grow in the grace and knowledge ofour Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Serve - We are called as servants to reach out and share the GoodNews with others. Galatians 5:13 says, You were called to free-dom, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-

indulgence, but through love become servants to one another.

Connect - We are called as servants to connect people to Godslocal church. Ephesians 2:19 says, You are no longer foreigners, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's

    household.

Praise - We all exist to celebrate Gods presence in worship and

celebration. Psalm 68:4 says, Our God, you are the one who rideson the clouds, and we praise you. Your name is the LORD and wecelebrate as we worship you.

Support - We are all called to be faithful stewards to support thechurch and ministries through regular financial giving. This yearthe pledge information will be a separate commitment card.

This is an exciting change for our church. Perhaps God is callingyou to take a step of faith and serve Him where you would neverhave imagined! If you have any questions regarding this change, please call the church office at 421-3280 or see Ministry PlacementTeam Members Jackie Durney or Jan Rosenberger.

What does being a sold-out disci-

ple of Jesus Christ look like? Andhow can we encourage people to bethose devoted followers? Thesewere the questions that the VisionTeam grappled with in its five meet-ings this year. Discipleship means personal, passionate devotion to aPerson., and when the Holy Spiritworks in our lives, we fall in lovewith Jesus. The Vision Team envi-sioned three ways that we as a

church can make room for the HolySpirit to create devoted followers ofJesus in our congregation:

by growing as disciples throughChrists teachings,

by serving Christ by serving oth-ers, and

by connecting with one anotherin Christian community.

    GrowServeConnectthroughthe following initiatives:

Broaden our spiritual educationalopportunities and formats, encourag-ing everyone to connect with GodsWord.

Work with everyone to discovertheir spiritual gifts, ensuring that allwill serve in some way in our churchor community.

Create fellowship programs thatencourage diverse participation of

groups and individuals, both withinand outside the church.

Church members will have an op-portunity to vote on Vision 2011 atour November Church Conference. The members of the Vision Teamare grateful for your prayers andpraise God for His presence andguidance during the entire process.

Have you had thoughts about serving in StephenMinistry? Have you opened your heart and talked toGod about becoming a Stephen Minister: and are youwilling to be obedient when the Lord tells you whereHe wants you to serve? Not too far from where youare, someone may be hurting and suffering asking forGods help. God may send you to use your spiritualgifts to minister to that someone.

Each one should use whatever gift he has received

to serve others, faithfully administering Gods grace

    in its various forms - 1Peter 4:10.

The Stephen Ministry training offered here at EastStroudsburg United Methodist Church focuses on theactual care-giving skills Stephen Ministers will use intheir caring relationships. leadership team, making for a stronger ministry foreveryone at our church. The skills Stephen Ministers learn and practice pre-

pare them to provide a very high level of Christiancare-giving. The training is intense as it explores seri-ous life issues, but it is also a growth-producing andenjoyable experience.

The Stephen Ministry training is held Wednesdayevenings beginning September 8 and will end by earlyApril.Among the training topics are Feelings: Yours, Mine,

    and Ours: The Art of Listening;

Donna thanks our church for the support and encour-agement in this special ministry over the last 25 years.Spanish Health Ministries covet our prayers and finan-cial support as they look to God for his provision anddirection for the future.

    But before people can ask the Lordfor help, they must believe in him;

What Is Family Promise?Family Promise (formerly

known as Interfaith HospitalityNetwork) has been in existencefor over 20 years, with over4,500 congregations, in 39states and the District of Co-lumbia, working to provideemergency housing for families. The average age of ahomeless person in the U.S. is 9 years old.

We make a difference by helping families with

children who suddenly find themselves without ahome of their own due to job layoffs, medical bills, death, divorce or other family emergencies. Theywill find the support and resources they need to getback on their feet in this great program.

What is our Role? Our church hosts families for dinner and over-nightstays at our church one week, four times a year (amaximum of 14 people at a time). During dinner andthe evening hours, volunteers can offer a listening

ear, a word of encouragement and understanding. In the morning the families go to the day center forshowers, children go to school or day care and parentsgo to work or look for employment and housing.

Kathy Aira, the director and social worker is onstaff at the day center to help the adult family mem-bers find what they need to get their family back ontrack and in a home of their own.

How Can You Help?Currently, we are without an overall coordinator.

Our Mission Statement is To Love Jesus Christ and to Share His

Love. As a church, one of the ways we support our mission is throughour vision: To Be a Beacon of Hope and Love to all Gods Children.
