East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church The Trumpet Call May 24, 2015 Pastor s Corner I want to thank the Rev. Bob Hachtman for preaching at ESUMC last Sunday, May 17, con- tinuing in the series on prayer. This Sunday will be the second-to-last sermon in the series, When Gods People Pray. In addition to the sermon se- ries, we are using Brooklyn Tabernacle Pastor Jim Cymbalas book and video of the same name in our Wednesday evening study series, in which three studies still remain. It is not too late to join our group from 7:00-8:30 pm in the upstairs of the office building in the Stephen Ministry room. Though this weekend is traditionally known as Memorial Day Weekend, this Sunday is also the Day of Pentecost. The celebration of Pentecost moves in relation to Easter on the calendar, and is 50 days after Easter (“Pentecostliterally means 50 days) and 10 days after the celebration of Jesusascension into heaven. For the Jewish faith, Pentecost is a celebration of the Feast of Weeksor Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai 50 days after the Exodus from Egypt. For Christians, Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit, as promised by Jesus before he ascended into heaven. As we will hear on Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and followers of Jesus with tongues of fire and a mighty wind. This was the manifesta- tion of the Spirit to the early disciples, but the power of the Holy Spirit has been available to all believers in Christ since the time of the first Pentecost. This Sunday, we will examine the relationship between prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit. Also this Sunday, we want to remember in prayer all of those who gave their lives in service to our country as we remember Memorial Day. Next week will mark the end of JAM (“Jesus And Me”) for the school year, and we thank Scott and the countless volunteers who have made this afterschool program so successful on Thursday afternoons and evenings. Those involved in JAM have little time for rest, as the follow- ing Thursday, the youth sponsored block parties begin in front of the church building. We will not be blocking off S. Courtland St., but we will be warmly welcoming everyone who stops by to pick up some free food and drink. The block parties begin on Thursday, June 4 and will contin- ue for approximately eight weeks. We need people to donate side dish- es, and many more people to just come and hang outand make peo- ple feel welcome at ESUMC. Tell your friends and neighbors, and lets see if we can get a large group of people out to our first block party! Please see the block party article on page 3, and contact Scott Kuhnle to volunteer to help with this great endeavor. If youre going away this weekend, stay safe on the roads; if youre in town, Ill see you in wor- ship! Pastor’s Corner

I want to thank the Rev. Bob Hachtman for preaching at ESUMC last Sunday, May 17, con-tinuing in the series on prayer. This Sunday will be the second-to-last sermon in the series, When God’s People Pray. In addition to the sermon se-ries, we are using Brooklyn Tabernacle Pastor Jim Cymbala’s book and video of the same name in our Wednesday evening study series, in which three studies still remain. Outreach Ministry Outreach Ministry Stephen Ministry “Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.” Psalm 55:22a

Humans like to be in control, having the power to choose ex-actly what is going to happen and when. Unfortunately, life isn’t like that! When something happens and we realize we’re not in control, we feel lost,

overwhelmed, angry, and even afraid. Stephen Ministers are trained to help[ when things are out of control. They provide support and encouragement, while helping a per-son put faith and trust in God. For more information about Stephen Ministry, contact Peggy Strack at the church office, 570-421-3280, ext. 1023.

Are You Getting to Know Each Other’s Names?

As we continue to wear our lanyard ESUMC name tags, we are

putting names with the faces of our congregation! Please con-

tinue to wear your name tag whenever you attend a church event. When you leave church,

name tags may be placed in the “Name Tag Return” baskets. If

you take your name tag home, please remember to wear it each

Sunday! If you would like a name

tag and have not received one, please sign the sheet on the

name tag table in Oberholtzer Hall.

Card Ministry Folks who are no longer able to attend church enjoy hearing from you! Cards may be sent to Minnie Batchler, 181 State St., East Stroudsburg, Pa. 18301

Opportunities/News Getting the Word Out Pastor Paul Scherer once said “Don’t ask for whom God’s Word is meant. It is meant for you”. God en-trusts us with the precious task of giving voice to God’s own part in the con-versation between God and His people. If you would like to get a better understanding on how to read scripture aloud, please join us on MAY 31 at 12:15 p.m. for training on “Getting the Word Out”.

Our youth will be confirmed on Sunday, June 7. Important: we will have two services that day: 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. The 8:30 a.m. service will be a regular Communion service, while the students will be confirmed at the 10:00 am service which

will combine elements found in both the 9:45 am and 11:00 am services of worship. A reception for the confirmands will take place immediately follow-ing the 10:00 a.m. service.

Update Our area here in the Poconos has surely been blessed by the weather. Oh, there may be rea-sons for some complaints, but just think about areas where there have been tornadoes and floods. These are the areas where UMCOR (United Methodist Comm. on Relief) goes to work. In 2015 UMCOR is celebrating 75 years of being with those in crisis around the world. FAITH PROMISE Supports an UMCOR International project and National Relief Disaster. When they respond to a disaster, UMCOR provides: 1. Training for teams of volunteers 2. If the Bishop of that Conference con-tacts them, they may receive emergency finan-cial assistance 3. UMCOR’s disaster-response experi-ence & knowledge is made available to those in need 4. Getting connected with experts, volun-teers, local government & other organizations able to help a community recover In addition to projects following disasters, UMCOR assists with Health Ministries, Hunger & Poverty, Refugees and Water & Sanitation projects around the world. Sharing faith and bringing hope around the world is a dynamic work of God’s love through the ministries of UMCOR. Let us share in there ministries in pray-ing for their work. To share in the support of FAITH PROMISE, you may use the envelope in Sunday’s bulletin or at anytime noting your gift is for Faith Promise or Missions.
