CultureThe Tahitians o the modern era have inherited a rich culture rom

their Maohi ancestors. Oral history recounts the adventures o

gods and warriors in colorul legends where javelin throwing was

the sport o the gods, sur riding was avored by the kings, and

strong men competed in canoe races and stone liting as a show

    o pure strength.

    Heiva I Tahiti

The greatest Polynesian cultural event in the world. This celebration

o ancient traditions and competition has been the most important

event in Tahiti or over 125 years. Visitors are encouraged to join in

the celebrations rom late June to late July every year and discover

daily and nightly events and displays. Tahitians gather in Papeete

rom many o the islands to exhibit crats, compete in traditionalsporting, dance, and musical events.

    Tattoo

    The word tatau originated

in Tahiti. The legend o Tohu,

    the god o tattoo, describes

    painting all the oceans sh

    in colors and patterns. In

    Polynesian culture, tattoos

have long been consideredsigns o beauty, and in earlier

    times were an important part

o the culture in signaling the

    end o adolescence.

    Handcrafts

The skills o the ancestors artistry are kept sacred and passed on

by both the mamas guardians o tradition and matriarchs o

Tahitian society and by the skilled cratsmen. Items include:

weaving, quilting, wooden and stone sculptures and bowls, drums,

    tapa, carvings, and hand-dyedpareu.

    Marae

The open-air sanctuaries called marae were the center o power in

ancient Polynesia. These stone religious sites, akin to temples, hosted

the important events o the times such as the worship o the gods,

peace treaties, celebrations o war, and the launch o voyages to

    colonize distant lands.

    Tahitian Culture & History

    Music and Dance

The beauty o todays Tahitian dance testies to its resilience in Polynes

culture. In ancient times, dances were linked with all aspects o lie. O

would dance to welcome a visitor, to pray, to challenge an enemy, a

to seduce a mate. Todays dance is still powerul, colorul, and sens

while accompanied by the harmonic voices o the Tahitians, thundero

traditional drums, and conch shells. Modern Tahitian music is surprisin

diverse with a blending o Polynesian rhythm and Western melody a

is easily ound or downloading on the internet.

    Flowers

Tropical owers seem to be everywhere on the islands, particula

in the hair o Tahitians. The amous Tiare Tahiti ower is used in l

or greeting arriving visitors and returning amily. Tradition ho

that, i taken, women and men wear a ower behind the let ear.

    Canoes

Aboard massive, double-hulled outrigger canoes called tipair

Polynesians navigated the vast ocean by stars, winds, and curre

and created new civilizations in their wake. Today, the canoe continu

to play an important role in everyday Tahitian lie and is honored

colorul races and estivals. Centuries beore Europeans conclud

that the Earth was round, Polynesians had mastered the Pacic.

    History of Overwater Bungalows

Started as a marketing scheme in the 1970s to attract tourists

the islands o Raiatea and Moorea, three American hotel own

known as the Bali Hai Boys improved on the local Polynesi

grass huts, by building them perched on wood stilts, over t

waters edge. Their three rooms on pillars out over the lago

was an immediate hit. Hotel Bora Bora, the irst luxury res

    on the islands, quic

    ollowed with larg

    overwater bungalo

    and today, most reso

    eature these dramaand luxurious bungalow

    suites, and villas.

The Mutiny that Brought Hollywood to Tahit

Although the HMS Bountywas just one o many ships sailing t

South Pacic in the 18th century, her mutinous voyage help

    make Otaheite (or Tahiti,

as it is called now) the

    worlds most inamous

    paradise. The drama and

    beauty o the islands

    and her people were

    showcased in the 1932

    book Mutiny on the

    Bounty and the movie

    adaptations o 1933,

    1935 (Best Picture), 1962

    (Best Picture nominee),

    and 1984.

HistoryAround 4000 BC, a great migration began rom Southeast Asia

across open ocean to settle the Pacic Islands. Many researchers

conclude that Tonga and Samoa were settled around 1300 BC and

rom here, colonization voyages were launched to the Marquesas

Islands in about 200 BC. Over the next several centuries, great

migrations to colonize all the Tahitian islands and ultimately,

nearly the entire South Pacic took place. This area is now calledthe Polynesian Triangle and includes Hawaii to the north, Easter

Island to the southeast, and New Zealand to the southwest. As a

result o these migrations, the native Tahitians, Hawaiians and the

Maoris o New Zealand all originate rom common ancestors and

speak a similar language collectively known as Maohi.

    The era o European exploration

began in the 1500s when ships

    without outriggers began to

    arrive. In 1521, Magellan spotted

the atoll o Pukapuka in what is now

the Tuamotu Atolls and, in 1595, the

    Spanish explorer Mendaa visited

Fatu Hiva Island in the Marquesas.

More than 170 years later, Captain

    Samuel Wallis aboard the English

rigate HMS Dolphin was the rst

to visit the island o Tahiti during

his journey to discover terra australis incognita, a mythical landmass

below the equator thought to balance the northern hemisphere.

Wallis named Tahiti King George III Island and claimed it orEngland. Soon ater and unaware o Wallis arrival, French navigator

Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, landed on the opposite side o

Tahiti and claimed it or the King o France. European ascination

with the islands grew as news spread o both the mutiny o Capt.

William Blighs crew aboard the HMS Bounty, and the tales told o

the beauty and grace o the Tahitian people. Western knowledge

and ascination o Tahiti and the South Pacic continued to expand

with the illustrations o Tahitian ora and auna and the rst map o

the islands o the Pacic that Capt. James Cook brought back. In the

1800s, the arrival o whalers, British missionaries, and French militaryexpeditions orever changed the way o lie on Tahiti, while also

serving to provoke a French-British rivalry or control o the islands.

The Pomare Dynasty ruled Tahiti until 1880 when King Pomare V was

persuaded to cede Tahiti and most o its dependencies to France.

By 1958, all the islands o Tahiti were reconstituted as the Overseas

French territory called French Polynesia. In 2004, French Polynesia

became an Overseas Country within the French Republic with sel-

governing powers and a mission to provide or her people through

    commerce and investment.

HuahineAbout orty minutes by plane rom the island o Tahiti, Huahine,

    o Tahitis best-kept secrets. A deep, crystal-clear lagoon surrounds

the two islands while magnicent bays and white-sand beaches

the modern world, Huahine oers the slower and tranquil pace o

old Polynesia. With only eight small villages scattered across theisland, the ew residents welcome visitors with great kindness. Not

surprisingly, this ertile world oers a rich soil providing the local

armers a bountiul harvest o vanilla, melons, and bananas.

The spell cast by Huahine will last a lifetime.

An Open Air MuseumAlthough crowded seldom comes to mind in describing the islan

come to lie with one o the amous local expert guides who w

share ancient tales and stories about their unique island lie.

Mythology provides two powerful legends for the

creation of the two islands of Huahine: either the

a spear thrown in a contest among gods pierced

Mooreas Mt. Mouaputa and then sailed 100 miles

Tuamotu AtollsTahitis Strand of PearlsOnly around an hour ight rom Tahiti or Bora Bora, the view o these

atolls rom the air appear as i hundreds o pearls were graceully

tossed upon the ocean. Each atoll is a delicate band o palm-laden

coral beaches and motu surrounding a lagoon with water so clear, it

seems innite. Only a ew eet in elevation, these seemingly lost atolls

are dotted with tiny villages where simple Polynesian lie welcomes

    romantics and divers alike.

True oceanic wonders of the world, whereexcitement and simplicity share the same breath.

Off The Map In The AtollsExcerpts from an article by Susan Kaye, author of more th

    60 magazine features about Tahiti

The coral atolls rise no more than a ew eet above the soothi

slurp o the waves. Many atolls are uninhabited; on others are the trooed homes o shermen and pearl armers; and a ew have intima

lodgings that are a perect match with the striking beachscapes.

This is my idea o paradise. Placid waters in a palette o blue. All t

jewel-bright sh o the sea just beyond my snorkel mask. Heave

ares and congenial restaurants where menus are ush with seao

    rom the lagoon.

Some o the Tuamotu Atolls are so remote, Ill see them again on

i Im on a sailboat bound or nowhere. Still, Id return in a minu

My husband and I stopped on one such atoll. We snorkeled apicnicked on a sliver o beach rimmed by a orest o palms. A lo

ellow rowed over to our beach with a cache o black pearls. F

less than we sometimes pay or dinner, we pocketed a luminesce

pearl that now dangles rom my bracelet, a constant reminder

    our languid day.

Above all, the atolls are end-o-the-rainbow isles where everything

all sea and sky. And always summer.

    Formerly Poumotu, then mispronounced as

Paumotu, the 78 atolls are the largest chain of coral

atolls in the world. Here, where the resourceful

Paumotu live in harmony with the ocean, it can be

more important to own a good canoe than a house.
