We accomplished so much in the last year; we couldn’t have done it without YOU!

The need for library services continues to expand. This past year, we were busier than ever! Every single day an average of 240 people visited the library, 234 patrons visited us through online resources, and 441 items were borrowed. The Oliver Wolcott Library is the principal public library for the Town of Litchfield. Our wonderful town provides nearly 50% of our funding, but the remaining 50% must be raised through private donations and grants. We gratefully extend our thanks to YOU, our patrons, for your generous support. Through your tax dollars and your donations, YOU made it possible for us to:

Initiate a new outreach service to area senior centers, reaching out to elders in our community who may be unable to get to the library

Provide Book-a-Librarian, a free service that provides personalized technology instruction Support preschool literacy with weekly storytimes, and personal visits to area child care centers Enlighten and entertain patrons of all ages through our frequent adult, teen and children’s

programs like author series, staff book talks, lectures, teen book club, summer reading program after-school programs, and special events

Inform and enlighten patrons of all ages with free access to our collection of more than 70,000 books, DVDs, audio books, music CDs, original podcasts, and downloadable e-books and e-audio

Welcome ALL members of our community to the library with friendly, personalized service

Part-time Staff:

EVERY MONTH:

This year, more than 151,000 items circulated. Print book circulation represented the largest segment with 94,254 print books, an increase from last year. Audio book circulation increased by 14% with more than 15,500 audio books borrowed. We also saw a 4% increase in the circulation of preschool picture books and beginning reader books.

We keep the community discussing books by offering staff book talk events, blog posts on what we’re reading and watching, services to area book clubs; and book clubs at the library, including our popular after-school and summer reading book clubs for grade school children.

READER’S ADVISORY & BOOK CLUB SERVICES:

Author talks, live theatrical and musical performances, lectures, workshops, staff book talk events, art openings: each month the library provides a wide-range of culturally-enriching and informative adult program events. An average of 375 adults attended a program each month, a 20% increase from last year.

ADULT PROGRAM EVENTS:

After-school book clubs, Lego Club, ½ Day Clubs, storytimes, Family Day, holiday events, and outreach to area preschools: throughout the year, the library provides a wide-range of engaging and educational children’s program events. An average of 934 children attended a program each month, an 11% increase from last year.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAM EVENTS:

Our monthly author talks let patrons listen and meet outstanding authors. This year, authors included Harvard Law and Leadership Professor Lawrence Lessig, Pulitzer Prize winning historian David Brion Davis, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Bill Dedman, New York Times staff writer Pam Belluck, Kafka prize winning novelist Valerie Martin, author and pastry chef Michele Stuart, debut novelist Vivien Shotwell, and many more.

AUTHOR TALKS:

Our summer reading program is crucial to school age children to prevent the “summer slide.” The program includes a reading challenge game; and several weekly events to keep children reading, socializing, and engaged throughout the summer months. This year 31% of grade school age children in Litchfield participated in the program: four times the percentage that the American Library Association defines as a successful summer reading program.

SUMMER READING:

We provide storytime sessions that incorporate kindergarten readiness for infants to five years old through our weekly programs at the library and our monthly outreach to area preschools. This year we increased our programs by adding eight unique holiday family programs and boosted our overall preschool attendance by 9%. With the increased attendance, we saw a 4% increase in the circulation of preschool picture and beginning reader books.

The OWL Box is a branch of the library located inside the Bantam Market in Bantam. It is a vending machine filled with books, DVDs and audio books. We were the first in our State, and still one of only a few libraries in the country, to offer such a service.

OWL BOX:

Book-a-Librarian ensures that everyone in our community is computer literate and technologically savvy with free, one-on-one instruction with our Adult Services Librarian. This year, we provided 217 sessions, or an average of 18 sessions each month, an increase of 19% from last year.

BOOK-A-LIBRARIAN:

Beginning in January 2014, we initiated monthly outreach to area senior living centers and the senior lunch service, reaching more than 30 seniors each month that would otherwise be unable to visit the library.

We provided our “senior bag” to more than 225 seniors in our community. Each senior tote bag is available to library patrons 65 or older, and contains valuable information about local senior services.

OUTREACH TO SENIORS:

The library offers patrons a place to meet friends, surf the stacks, and access the internet with our public computers and wifi. The library’s Emslie Room offers a quiet space to read, study and work.

MEETING & QUIET SPACE:

Through our website and online resources you can stay informed, access My Account, learn about our newest additions to the collection through Wowbrary, download our book discussion guides, and hear about staff suggestions for reading through our Staff Picks. An average of 234 patrons connected with us each day through our web resources, a 10% increase from last year.

WEBSITE & ONLINE RESOURCES:

This year, we said good-bye to our majestic Beech Tree. A special committee was appointed to explore the best way to honor our special tree and decide on it’s future replacement. The Beech Tree Committee was comprised of both trustees and community members: Susan Spencer (Chair), Stuart Chapman, Jim Huffstetler, Drew Harlow, Jane Hinkel, John LaGattuta, and Marla Patterson. Three local artists were contacted to prepare special items for the library made from the tree: John LaGattuta, Richard Heys, and Jim Nash.

W e want to take this opportunity to recognize an important gift received from Mrs. Jamie Gagarin.

Mrs. Gagarin served as a library trustee and officer over many years, including periods of major growth in the library’s physical facilities. Her long term commitment as both a volunteer and a benefactor has had a critical impact in making OWL a wonderful community resource dedicated to excellence and the freedom of speech. This important gift helps ensure that we can continue this vital role.
