Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St
John’s,
Welcome back to Term Four of
the school year; I cannot believe
that I have been here nearly
twelve months. My first visit to
St John’s when I was aware that
I would be coming here in 2017
was to the Moonlight Fair. This is
fast approaching and I encourage
you all to be part of this great social and fundraising event.
Pencil in Friday 20th October as it is going to be a wonderful
afternoon and night. Our thanks go to the organising
committee, teachers and students who work towards this
fun-filled evening. This year, funds from this sub branch of
the P & F contributed $160,000 to the building of our seven
new classrooms.
It is a very short term, so it is important that students remain

organised and focused. Before we know it, we will be saying
good bye to our Year 12 students and welcoming our new
Preps for 2018. I hope we all have a safe and happy term and
that the Holy Spirit is with us as we plan for 2018. God Bless.

School attendance / latenessAttendance at school is imperative if your child is to succeed.
After all of the sickness and days missed last term, it is very
important that students are here every day and all day. Last
term when I visited classrooms on a Friday, I noticed that
often children were away from school because parents were
attending events etc. Teaching and learning happens on
a Friday all day, so it is important that your child attends.
Punctuality is a very important life skill and we need to instill
this in our children from an early age. The weather is now
warmer and the sun is rising earlier, so perhaps it is easier
to get to school on time. Late students cause more work in
the office as well as interrupting the beginning of the day in
the classroom. Please ensure your children are at school on
time.
Years 3 / 4 Reading Inservice and Phonological AwarenessOur Prep – Year Two teachers have finished their in-service
around reading with Pat Edgar and will continue to roll this
out this term, with our Years Three & Four teachers to finish
theirs in Week Three. Mrs Pat Edgar, who is the consultant,
will also be visiting our school for three days to follow up
on how our phonological awareness program has developed
and to support the fine tuning of it in 2018. Pat will be
working with the students in the classrooms demonstrating
and supporting teachers. I thank all the teachers involved in
this project for their support, dedication and hard work.
TuckshopPlease be reminded there is no
tuckshop this week. Tuckshop will start Week Two.

Enrolments for 2018Towards the end of last term and now coming into this term, I have been
conducting interviews for students and families who wish to enroll at St
John’s in 2018. As we move towards class and staff allocation, I encourage
all to let us know if there will be changes to your enrolment for 2018 and
any other people who wish to enroll to come for an interview. We still have
some places in some classes, but these are filling quickly. In 2018, we hope
to have three streams in the primary in all year levels except Years Two and
Four. There are still a number of spots in Prep as we will be applying to have
three streams as well.
Queensland Secondary Schools Tennis
The last week of Term Three
saw our secondary boys tennis
team travel to Rockhampton to
represent the South West Region
at the Queensland Secondary
Schools Team Tennis State Finals.
While the wind made for less
than ideal playing conditions,
the Rockhampton tennis centre
offered the opportunity to play
on fantastic hard courts against
other top school teams from
around the state. Finishing 11th,
Henry, Luke, Lachlan, Walker and
Adam all played extremely well
and are to be congratulated on
their playing, efforts and conduct.
Special mention also goes to Byron
who trained with the squad as a
reserve and who would have been
willing and able to step into the
team if needed.

The Moonlight Fair is a great night of family fun and a wonderful fundraiser for the school. The Fair is fast approaching and we are looking for help in many different ways. RAFFLE TICKETS All families in the school have been sent a book of 20 tickets in the raffle. The tickets and money need to be returned to the school office by 13th October. Please make an effort to sell these tickets as the profit from the raffle goes straight back to resources and equipment for your children. For example, the new school buses were purchased by the P&F and make excursions much less expensive for all families. ENTERTAINMENT FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS This year’s Moonlight Fair will feature a special area for secondary students including arcade games, laser skirmish and a lounge. We would love a parent (or group of parents) to assist with organising and setting up this area for the night. Please let us know if you are able to help as we would like to make this area very inviting for our secondary students. ARMBANDS FOR STUDENTS A letter was sent home late last term with details on how families can purchase armbands that allow your child UNLIMITED entry to either the primary or secondary school entertainments. This is excellent value and we encourage people to pre-purchase their armbands to remove the need for you to wait to purchase them at the Fair. The armbands are available by returning the form to the school office OR they can be purchased at Kimlin’s Camping World in McDowall St. CLASS STALLS A list of class stalls and requests for donations and other assistance will be sent home in the coming weeks. Please consider carefully how your family can help with the set-up, running and clean-up of the Moonlight Fair. All students at the school benefit from the funds raised at the Fair and if everyone gets involved, it will be a successful night. FACEBOOK Please find and like our Facebook page as it will keep you up to date with the preparations for the Fair and provides lots of other information. We are using Facebook to acknowledge our wonderful sponsors and by liking and sharing those posts you are thanking our sponsors and this can also encourage other sponsors for the future. OUR CURRENT SPONSORS Thanks so much to the businesses who are already sponsoring the Moonlight Fair. Your very generous contributions will be acknowledged in the Newsletter, on Facebook and on the evening by our MC and a visual display. Even if you are unable to attend the meeting, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to be involved. Please email [email protected] or call Leesa Murray on 0403 174 450 if you would like more information or would like to be part of an email group to receive updates.
