Wow – what a term this has been. It continually amazes me just how much one school can fit in over such a short period of time. Just this week we’ve had incredible success with the interschool athletics and swimming sports, winning the overall athletics trophy for 2016 and having the vast majority of swimmers qualify for State finals. We also had parent teacher interviews that provided thousands of conversations to explore student learning progress and areas for further development. We certainly haven’t slowed down as the term has progressed.

I think what has impressed me most this term is the incredible sense of pride that students have had in their own achievements and that of their peers. Celebrations have been shared, not individually hidden and it is this positive culture that I have been privileged to witness again and again.

Next term will no doubt be just as busy as this one, which will present both challenges and opportunities for our staff and students. I know we will rise to such challenges and grasp such opportunities collectively and continue to celebrate the great school that we are all part of.

On behalf of the Assistant Principal team can I extend our congratulations to Dave

Clift who has been appointed as the Warrnambool College Principal for the next five

years. Dave has made a smooth transition in the acting position and we fully trust

him to guide our school through the next exciting phase.

We wish all students travelling to Shanghai during the holidays to visit our sister

school all the best. The College staff- Colin Payne, Kathy Stacey and Anna Han

have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to get this trip up and running in a

short time frame. We are sure they will have a fantastic experience and broaden

their cultural understanding.

Term One has been quick but full of amazing opportunities for our students. Our staff

continue to devote their own time to ensure our students have the best possible

opportunities for them to achieve their best outcomes in academic subjects and extra

curricula activities/events.

An elite team of aquatic Bullants represented our college at the Victorian regional swimming finals. 49 schools attended

the meet and with just 9 members, our team was one of the smallest (for example Hawkesdale and Heywood both took

almost twice this number). Swimmers were eager to impress with only the winner of each final progressing to the State

championships in May.

Put simply, the Warrnambool college team put on a clinic collecting 37 medals, a string of PB's and the hearts and minds

of all who attended. This secured second place on the overall points tally - an exceptional achievement from just nine

swimmers.

Here is a breakdown of some personal highlights from each swimmer:

Noah Best:

At just 13 years of age he took a massive

step up and competed in the under 20's relay

team for freestyle and medley (backstroke).

In the medley relay Noah swam first in the

backstroke leg to put the relay team in first

place at the change-over.

Finished with 3 gold medals from three

swims (Relay, IM Relay, 50 back)

Gabby Good:

Gabby entered the pool today three times

(200 freestyle,200 individual medley, 100

Freestyle Medley), and walked away with

three gold medals.

Denbi Lamb:

Won the the 400m freestyle by over a minute

but unfortunately was later disqualified from

the event due to incorrect registering

procedures

Took command of her leg of the winning

relay swim and will still proceed to state

champs in May

Rachel Vickery:

Rachel collected a trio of gold in the 50

metres fly, free and backstroke.

Competed commendably in the open girls

backstroke

Came fourth, before sprinting back to the

other end to compete in the very next race

(which she won).

Seb Good:

4 Golds (100freestyle,200IM, Relay

Freestyle, Relay IM)

silver (100 Breaststroke).

Brittany Leach:

3 golds (50fly, 50 free, relay)

a silver and a bronze.

Blake Turner:

5 gold medals (100 fly, 50 fly, 50 free,

Medley Relay, IM Relay)

Silver in the 100 freestyle.

The winner of the 100 freestyle is unavailable

for state championships however, and thus

Blake has progressed in this event and will

swim in 6 races at the state titles.

Trey Ahu:

Silver 200m Freestyle.

Bronze in the 50 backstroke.

Rhys Kent:

5 gold (50breast, 50 back 200IM, Relay, IM

Relay)

2 bronze (50 Fly, 50 Free)

Please congratulate these awesome individuals when you see them, and wish them all the best for the

state champs which will take place on the 19th of May.

A huge thank you goes out to Sonia Prewett and all the parents who cheered and supported our stu-

dents enabling them to compete at their very best.

What a day we had at Brauerander Park for our School Athletics Day. The colour and costume made

for a carnival atmosphere and it was great to see so many students actively participating in many

events on the track, in the field and on the hill for the novelty events.

A special thank you to Peter Varley for setting up and operating the timing system on the day, your

assistance was invaluable. Also to all students, thank you for participating in such fine spirit and

showing incredible sportsmanship throughout the day. The day also would not happen without the

support and cooperation of all staff. A huge thank you to you all.

Following on from our School athletics we had over 140 students qualify for the Warrnambool Division

Athletics day at Brauerander Park on Tuesday 22nd

March. And what a day we had. From the outset

Warrnambool College students were amazing with a number breaking long standing records and all

doing their absolute best at representing our school. I saw many examples of fantastic sportsmanship

with our students congratulating fellow competitors from all schools at the completion of events. They

should be commended for the way they conducted themselves throughout the day.

Once the relays began our students stepped it up and shone. From 12 relays we came away with 7

firsts, 3 seconds and 2 thirds.

The day culminated in Warrnambool College being crowned overall CHAMPIONS. An amazing effort

from every student who participated and encouraged each other. Well Done.

Thank you to the wonderful staff and parents who came along to assist on the day.

We will have a large contingent of students who will now qualify to compete at the Greater Western

Region Carnival in Ballarat on Friday 7th October.

The 2016 Warrnambool Cheese and

Butter Adrian Meade Dairy Innovation

Program is now inviting applications

from Year 10 and 11 students aged 15

or over who are interested in a career

in the dairy industry. This is a six-day

structured workplace learning program

in the June/July school holidays for up

to 12 students from across WCB’s milk

supply area.

The program’s first day will be held at WCB’s Allansford factory learning about the WCB

business, its products and processes. This will be followed by a four-day tour of the dairy industry supply chain and a final

day back at the factory looking at pathways into the industry.

The idea of this program is to show students the scope of careers in the dairy industry and to show how each career fits

within the dairy supply chain. The program provides an insight into careers in the industry in areas such as agriculture and

related service industries, trades associated with manufacturing, supply chain management and logistics, food technology,

engineering, and sales and marketing.

Feedback from students, schools and industry partners about the previous years’ programs has been very positive.

It is a legal requirement for parents to log

Unfortunately we cannot accept a text

message sent to the student’s phone as

permission, nor verbal permission. It can

sometimes be very difficult to contact a

parent to seek permission at the time the

student is signing out if they don’t have

prior permission. In this case we are not

permitted, by law, to allow the student to

leave the College.


WAVE Site

We have been in negotiations with DET (Department of Education and Training) regarding the relocation of our WAVE (Warrnambool Alternative VCAL Educa-tion) Campus to a new learning environment.

At present WAVE are staying at the 72 Henna St premises for at least first term. We are actively work-ing on relocation options which we hope will be in the short term future.

In the meantime please refer any WAVE related que-ries to the usual WAVE contacts – ph: 5562 9279, ad-dress 72 Henna St.

CONVEYANCE ALLOWANCE

The DET (Department of Education and Training)

provides financial support to some families to

assist with the cost of transport to school.

Assistance in the form of a conveyance allowance

is available to students who live in rural and

remote areas who do not have access to a free

school bus service. The conveyance allowance is

payable to parents of students who meet the

following eligibility requirements:

must be between 5-18 years of age

Must travel 4.8km or more from where they

live to either the nearest denominational

school and not have access to a government

school bus route or

Must travel 4.8km or more to the nearest

government school bus route.

Forms are available from the front office and

should be submitted as soon as possible.

In term two, year seven students will be studying a unit called “Water, Waste, Mix and Separate” in science. To support the classroom learning in our classes, the Science faculty has arranged for all Year 7 Science classes to tour the Wannon Water treatment plant, located in Albert Park (just near school).

Students will have a learning task to complete as part of the visit, so it is an expectation that all students will attend. The excursion is happening during our normal class time and there will be no cost to students. No additional permission note required as it is a local excursion and during a timetabled lesson.

Students are to wear their normal school uniform. In case of inclement weather, students need to bring a rain jacket or similar as we will be walking to the treatment plant. Please keep an eye on Compass for your son/daughter’s scheduled class vist which will be between Wednesday 13

th April and Tuesday 26

th April.

Selamat siang!

It’s been a busy start to the year in the Indonesian department, with many exciting happenings. You may have noticed a new sculpture outside the home economics building - a life-sized Komodo dragon created by a local chainsaw artist Andrew Rankin. We are now running a competition to name the giant lizard! Please write your suggestion for the Komodo’s name on a piece of paper along with your name, form and house and pass it onto an Indonesian teacher (Bu, Bu, Mbak, Pak or Mas)! There are some wonderful prizes up for grabs! Entries close the end of May, so put your thinking caps on.

The number of students studying Indonesian in 2016 is at an all-time high for the college, with our enrolment levels among the highest in regional Victoria. Thus we now have five Indonesian teachers employed at the college. We welcome Mbak Prince and Bu Burchell to our team. We are very proud of how the staff, students and community have embraced the studies of this wonderful second language. To keep the momentum going, on Thursday, May 19, we are hosting the regional Indonesian speaking competition at the college. In the past we have had students place at state level in this competition. We have six schools - both primary and secondary - interested in competing at this event, which is wonderful. It will cost $5 to enter and students interested in competing will be supported in their preparation in class. Entry forms will be available early in term two. Lets show the state what we can do here at the college!

Finally, we have started to prepare an exciting itinerary for a study tour to Indonesia in March/April 2017! Many of us are still remembering fondly the wonderful trip of 2015 and can’t wait to do it all again! We will hold a parent and student information session early in term two to gauge interest and collect deposits to book flights. Stay tuned for more information early in term two.

On Monday, March 7th , The Bullants played Emmanuel first up in the battle of the Warrnambool Cup and more importantly for bragging rights as the best team in town.

A strong easterly breeze was blowing to the Midfield end of the ground and The Bullants had a squad of 32 players who were ready to march their way to victory.

Emmanuel won the toss and kicked with the wind in the first half. Emmanuel kicked a few behinds but for the majority of the half The Bullants out played Emmanuel. We controlled the ball well. Took our time and held Emmanuel up when they tried to play on. At half time, Emmanuel didn’t register a goal, kicking 4 behinds and The Bullants managed 2 behinds. We loaded our forward line up in the second half and were winning plenty of the ball, but were forced wide and couldn’t capitalise on our dominance until half way through the quarter when Liam Antonio took a strong mark and converted from 25 meters out. We hit the lead and looked full of running. Hopefully, another few quick goals and Emmanuel would drop off.

Unfortunately, this didn’t happen. Emmanuel started to win their share of the ball, clogged up our forward line and were able to kick a few points into the breeze. With 2 minutes to go Emmanuel kicked a goal to regain the lead. This stung the Bullants and maybe lifted their work rate. The final 2 minutes the ball was going up and down the ground and finally, the Bullants forced their way forward and kicked a goal on the siren to win the game! We were ecstatic! However, this triumphant victory was short lived as it was claimed that the goal was kicked after the final siren. This was a controversial decision! Both coaches had to consult umpires and officials. We could have appealed and protested but at the end of the day it was declared that we kicked the goal mo-ments after the siren. The way the Bullants handled themselves under these circumstances was simply out-standing. Yes, we lost to Emmanuel again by under a goal for the third consecutive year. But, we are building a culture of respect, persistence and resilience in these young men! We still succeed and go on to the SSV com-petition where we have made the state final twice in the last 5 years.

In the second game, we let Brauer borrow 6 players as they were short. So, the result was never in doubt. Overall, a large number of participants represented the college in fine style. See results below! #Go Bullants!

The College will be offering an opportunity for

students and families to attend a performance of

the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein musical

'The Sound of Music' during the Melbourne

season at the Regent Theatre. This production is

being described as 'a lavish family treat' and

includes all the well known favourites such as:

Edelweiss, Climb Ev'ry Mountain, Do-re-mi,

Sixteen going on seventeen. Maria will be played

by Amy Lehpamer and the Captain by Cameron

Daddo.

Tickets are available for students and family members to

attend. Ticket price includes A reserve seats to a night

performance and coach transfer. There are 50 tickets

reserved and these will be allocated to the first 50 students

to pay $85 (total cost). Name and bookings can be made

through the main College office. Year 10 students who will

be on camp on the night of the 19th of May can pay a

reduced fee to attend the performance.

Performance date: Thursday 19th of May at

7.30pm

Departure time: the coach will depart from the

College at 1.30 pm

Dear Parent/ Guardian, We write to invite you to an information evening on ‘I CAN South West’ on Wednesday 13 April, 6.30pm at Brauer Col-lege in Warrnambool. Our school has been involved with developing the concept of ‘I CAN South West’ which we hope will become the re-gional network for I CAN Network, Australia’s first social enterprise founded by people with Autism. I CAN Network delivers a mentoring program for people on the Autism Spectrum across primary and secondary schools, universities and TAFEs and workplaces. Its point of difference is that the program is delivered by mentors on the Spectrum, typically people who are at a university or TAFE or a young professional on the Spectrum. The program places an emphasis on leadership and develops pathways for young people on the Spectrum, including their progression into an I CAN Mentor where they earn a casual wage to deliver mentoring to others on the Spectrum. I CAN Network has experienced high success with this model and has attracted a lot of national media and government interest in its deliberate approach working through people on the Spectrum. The main asset of the organisation is its Autism culture which is created through its quarterly camps run by leaders on the Spectrum. The next camp, which is available to your family to express interest, is occurring from 15-17 April 2016 at Kangaroobie on the Great Ocean Road in Princetown. We would love for you to join us for an information evening at Brauer College in Warrnambool where we will be dis-cussing the roll out of I CAN South West’s mentoring program for high school students on the Spectrum. Together the Warrnambool Schools have worked with South West TAFE to arrange group mentoring for local high school students on the Spectrum, set to occur fortnightly on Thursday mornings, starting from Thursday 28 April. Come along to this forum aimed at parents of deaf children. Dis-

cussion topics will be deaf education in Victoria and your child’s

rights. Leading human rights advocate Julie Phillips (Winner of

the National Disability Advocate of the Year 2016) will present

and attendees will have the chance to participate in open discus-

sion on what our deaf children’s rights are within the Victorian

Education System.

This will be a fantastic opportunity to share and discuss experi-

ences with other parents and carers. Please invite others par-

ents/carers who you think would like to attend.

This forum is being presented by: Deaf Victoria, ASLIA Victoria and the Disability Discrimination Legal Service.

The forum will also be live-streamed for those that are unable to join in person. Any parents picking their child up from the sick bay will need to enter via the Russells Creek entrance and drive past the pool and follow the signs located on the school buildings. There is a short term car park near the new climbing tower. Please follow the signs to the location of the sick bay.

Any parents who hold a health care card and who have not filled out a Camp,

Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) form for this year, please follow the link to

print a form. Once completed, please drop it into the front office. http://

State Schools Relief Uniform Initiative is only available to parents of students

who are going into year 7 and hold a health care card. If you have not filled out

one of these forms, they are available from the front office.

S041-2016 Student Accident Insurance/Ambulance Cover Arrangements

and Private Property Brought to Schools

Parents/guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs; and

Parents/guardians can purchase insurance policies from commercial insurers

The Department cannot advise parents/guardians on whether to purchase a student accident policy/ambulance cover, or which policy to purchase. It is recommended that they seek assistance in this matter with their insurance broker or find a suitable personal accident insurer in the Yellow Pages or online.

Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. As the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property students, staff should be discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school
