I hope you all saw the TV coverage of the achievements of David Hollis who recently won the title of National Hammer Throw Champion for his age group. There was some spectacular footage on the television of David’s technique and his skill in this highly technical sport. Well done David. Year 12 will begin their Half Yearly Examinations next week. I wish them well in their efforts and remind them that it is not about luck but rather about careful and consistent effort and preparation. I hope they have made use of the time available to them in the Senior Preparation Room and the support that is available to them. This is where self-motivation and study time well spent begins to pay off. Next Tuesday evening we are holding out Year 5 & 6 Twilight Tours and Year 7 Meet the Teachers afternoon. I would encourage all year 7 parents to take the opportunity to visit the school and let us share with you some thoughts about how we can work together to support your child over the coming 6 years of schooling. For those with children looking to the future and what they will be doing in Year 7 2016 we offer an opportunity to tour the school and look at what Wauchope High School has to offer. Details are available on our website or in this week Wauchope Gazette. On Tuesday night the P&C held its Annual General Meeting and I would like to congratulate Mrs Annette Cordell on being re-elected as P&C President, Mrs Kirrilea Stafford for being re-elected as P&C Treasurer. Congratulations to our new Vice President Mrs Donna Llyod and Mrs Catherine Bennetts for being elected as P&C Secretary for 2015. There are a number of students I would like to congratulate in this week’s newsletter. It is always pleasing to be able to highlight the wonderful work and efforts of our students across the range of activities they undertake.

On Thursday we held our first Term merit assemblies for each year group. It is through these merit assemblies that we recognise and celebrate the day to day successes and achievements of the students in their schoolwork, sporting endeavours and the contributions that they make to the cultural and social elements of school life. Well done and congratulations to all those students that received awards.

The girls made, donated and sold their jewellery on the day with the proceeds going to the Werin Elders Group. They also helped serve morning tea to the elders and guests present. Congratulations and well done on an outstanding effort and contribution.

On Thursday the Ready Mob Close the Gap team presented a workshop to our Aboriginal students on tackling the dangers of smoking and the need to make healthy lifestyle choices. The students who attended learnt a great deal and enjoyed an interesting and interactive series of activities.

Arriving in Sydney

On Thursday 4th March a group of intrepid adventurers boarded the train at Wauchope Station for a 3 day combined Ancient History and Legal Studies excursion to Sydney. After a restful night the activities began with students participating in educational programs which were relevant to the subjects studied. All students visited the site of the tragic Lindt Café siege where a short service took place. Students then proceeded to the Downing Centre which is the busiest court facility in NSW. Cases were observed, justice was dispensed and sage words of advice were given to offenders. Students were able to see what happens to people who cross over to the “darkside”. Legal Studies students then visited the Coroners Court where one of the medical specialists spoke about the forensic side of what happened when a person enters this facility as a client. Not nice, although you are treated with respect at all times. Ancient History students, meanwhile, participated in an archaeological dig under the YHA. This involved handling and analysing ancient relics that have been found in The Rocks. This dovetailed nicely into the first topic of this course which is Archaeology. On Friday the Legal Studies students visited the Sydney Jewish Museum where the students learnt about the Holocaust. After a moving talk by Susan who was a holocaust survivor the students participated in a guided tour of the museum which contained 100’s of items on display. This was very confronting, seeing material found at massacre sites and a blanket made of human hair. Students visited the old Darlinghurst Gaol to hear about the last woman, Louisa Collins, to be executed in Australia. Did she really kill her two husbands or was she a victim of politics? Ancient History students visited the Nicholson Museum at Sydney University to study artefacts dating back 7,000 years. This involved handling relics using protective clothing. One student was heard to comment “I handled a 3,000 year old foot which still had toenails”. Students attained much knowledge related to their subjects as well as life skills. Students (and Mr Houlahan) learnt that after recent events security is very serious business in Sydney. Students do not get tired whilst shopping but do at other times. Some students have huge appetites and Mr Houlahan likes walking (fast). The students were a credit to the school and I look forward to the trip in 2016. Thank you Mrs Munro for attending the excursion too. Mr Houlahan. (Relieving HT HSIE).

Shave for a Cure

Jacob Phillips of Year 11 recently participated in the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. He raised in excess of $1800, with $100 coming from Year 11 student Jesse Linards. This donation

made Jesse eligible for the ‘first cut’. Jesse passed this honour to Mr Campbell who removed Jacob’s mullet with a certain amount of glee as Jacob’s proud grandmother looked on.

The final shave was completed by Kiyomi from Silk Hair and Body. Congratulations and well done Jacob.

Senior Preparation Room Deck The Senior Prep room is currently expanding. During first term this year we have outgrown the current workspace

with year 11 and 12 students now frequenting this space. Funding has been approved to build an outdoor deck area which will be used to provide an additional workspace

during busy times. This year we are fortunate to have both a metal and engineering class and a construction class in year 11. The skills these students have already learnt have enabled them to perform all the work under the guidance of Greg

Marshall and Grant Weatherby. We have even used the Primary Industry students under instruction from David Starr to dig all the pier holes as a

competency for their vet studies. Looking at the current progress we anticipate this new learning area to be fully functional by the start of term 2.

Facts about fractions If you’ve forgotten 3/5 of primary school maths and 7/8 of high school maths, what’s left? Ah ha! Kids need help learning how to add fractions too. The only thing left is to print these fact sheets. Find our more: https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/eppcontent/glossary/app/resource/factsheet/4013.pdf

Amazing art Autumn’s the perfect season to take a trip to a gallery. The popular ArtExpress exhibition connects us to the inner lives and self-expression of high school students. Amazing works are on show throughout NSW. Check out the cal-endar. Find out more: http://artexpress.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/

Congratulations to Emily, Larissa, Chloe, Nicara, Maihali, Georgia, Emma, Willis Tyrell, Jarrod, Jarrad, Cameron, & Kane, who were all selected in the LNC Zone Touch Football Teams going to the North

Coast Trials on Tuesday 31st March in Ballina.

On Friday 13th March the Wauchope High School Mock Trial Team completed the first case of the year against our traditional rivals, St Columba Anglican School. This case took place in the Historic Court

House, Port Macquarie and WHS were the defence.

The defendant was Jack Burton who was charged with murder. Jack handled himself with aplomb in the dock. How could a person with such an angelic face commit such a crime?

Second witness for the defence was Daniel Bowser who has now recovered from the Big Dig excursion. Daniel could not be rattled under pressure and proved a reliable witness for Wauchope High School.

The Wauchope legal team consisted of barristers Dean Hollis and Samantha Mead. They were ably assisted by solicitor Thomas Hoy who provided good support to the barristers.

The barristers showed great confidence and were not afraid to ask the hard questions of the opposition. This caused some uncomfortable moments for the St Columba witnesses.

Tristan Koch, as court officer, assisted in the smooth running of the case.

Jack beat the charge and was able to walk out of the court as a free man. This was a practice round so the skills learnt will be very beneficial for the next round.

Thank you to Mrs Thornton for assisting Mr Houlahan on the day. Our next opponents are unknown at this stage.
