    Melbournes west has bucked the youth unemployment trend by recording a drop of almost 3 per cent.

    Australia Bureau of Statistics figures show youth unemployment rates in the region, which includes the Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay council areas, dropped from a 12-month average of 16.4 per cent in July, 2013, to 13.5 per cent this July.

    However, the Brotherhood of St Lawrence said it had analysed the ABSs Victorian figures for ages 15 to 24 and found there had been a rise in jobless youth numbers in most regions.

    The organisation found the average unemployment rate in the age range in the year to July was 13.8 per cent up from 12.3 per cent a year earlier.

    Michael Wasley, general manager of jobs search company Matchworks, said it was likely youth unemployment in Wyndham had fallen as a result of population changes, with the raw numbers of youth unemployed remaining stable. We still have high numbers of job seekers on our books.

    Mr Wasley said young people looking for work could boost their prospects by showing prospective employers they had good communication skills and a good work ethic. Employers arent necessarily looking for someone with the qualifications to do a job but rather someone who can do what theyre asked to do.

    A new $1 billion development at Wyndham Vale is being hailed as part of a suburb of the future by Planning Minister Matthew Guy.

    Mr Guy launched Lend Leases 435-hectare Harpley estate on Black Forest Road last Thursday, saying it would provide houses for about 12,000 residents.

    The estate will be built over the next 12 years.

    As reported by Star Weekly, the development was given the green light in July after the state government approved a $533 million developer contribution plan for Wyndhams west.

    The plan outlined contributions that will be made by Wyndham council, the government and developers to fund key infrastructure in the area.

    Plans for Harpley include 4000 new houses, transport links, community facilities, more than 60 hectares of lakes and wetlands, a waterfront town centre, and three schools.

    The estate will have direct access from the Princes Freeway via Armstrong Road and a bridge over the railway line, easing congestion on Cottrell Street.

    Harpley will be part of a suburb of the future that is within a commutable distance of a major employment precinct [at East Werribee], Mr Guy said.

    This is a place for Melbournes future this is a new suburb for families.

    Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the inclusion of two primary schools and a secondary school in the estate was a win for Wyndham families.

    Lend Lease state communities general manager Neil OConnor said Harpley would have amenities to help people live a happy and healthy lifestyle.

    Weve already partnered with Wyndhamvale Football Club and Werribee Football Club and were excited to watch them grow and succeed over the next few years alongside Harpley, he said.

    Stage one of the development will include the wetlands and a cultural park.

    Cr Khan maintains he didnt see the 2014 advertisement and when asked whether he saw the 2013 advertisement before it went to print, he said: I dont remember.Alwasat editor-in-chief Fawaz Chawk

    confirmed both advertisements were free greetings to mark Ramadan.

    Mr Chawk said Cr Khan requested last years greeting, but this years was automatically placed in the newspaper.

    We did the design, we took the logo from the council website, he said. We send [sic] (the 2014 advertisement) to him when it was finished.

    The resident who has made the complaint maintains Cr Khan has serious questions to answer.

    Wyndham council only became aware of the advertisements on Monday.

    Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said the council did not authorise use of its logo.

    I can comment with certainty that no council funds or resources were used, she said.

    Councillors found to be misusing their position for personal gain could constitute a breach of section 76D of the Local Government Act 1989. Council understands that Local Government Victoria has been made aware of this matter and we will provide full co-operation to the inspectorate to ensure any potential breaches of the act are fully investigated.

    Whats your connection to the local community?Im principal of Baden Powell College and have lived in Wyndham for 32 years, including the last four in Sanctuary Lakes. Prior to that I lived in Werribee.

    Ive been a member of Wyndham Rotary for the past 20 years.

    As of July next year I will be the district governor, which means I will be supporting 71 Rotary clubs in Victoria. I will visit each club and provide guidance and support to them.

    I love being involved with Rotary. I get to catch up with 25 to 30 friends every Wednesday night.

    Being a member is an amazing experience. We provide weekend camps for young people and I am involved in programs including Early Act for primary students and Interact for 12-18 year olds.

    Those involved in these programs meet fortnightly and take part in school, community and international projects to improve the community and learn the value of volunteering. Programs include making an anti-bullying DVD for schools, visiting a local preschool and reading books to the children, and fund-raising for a new school in Cambodia to provide uniforms, books and other resources.

    What do you love about Wyndham?The cultural diversity of the people and their food. Im eating food I wasnt 32 years ago, including Thai, Korean and African.

    Theres also lots of young families in the area and retirement villages being built, so theres a great range of ages in the community.

    MY WYNDHAMThe principal of a school with about 1700 students, a local Rotarian and loving grandma, Julie Mason knows a thing or two about the people of Wyndham, writes Rebecca Miller.

    What would you like changed in Wyndham?The traffic. Ive spent time on committees for local government and weve been trying to minimise traffic. I have to double my time to get from one side of Wyndham to the other, compared with five years ago.

    How do you spend your downtime?I love taking my two grandsons to the beach at Werribee South and to Point Cook Coastal

    Park. I also love the history of the [Werribee]mansion.

    Wheres your favourite place to get coffee or a bite to eat?Waterstone Caf at Sanctuary Lakes. Its peaceful, the food and entertainment is fantastic the chicken parmigiana is beautiful.
