News from Talgarthby Cllr.William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth

Incredible as it may seem, the New Year is upon us once again, with its mix of public and private reflections on the past 12 months and on the times to come. I suspect that Wye Local readers will already be weighing up New Year resolutions and speculating on what 2014 will mean for themselves, their family, friends and neighbours.

2013 has once again proved to be a challenging year for many people in our community. We continue to face difficult times as a nation and locally too the year has had its share of highs and lows. As I gather my thoughts for this first column of the New Year, it is just a month since our community came together at the Cenotaph in solemn remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The trenches of World War One are etched in our collective awareness but as we enter the year which marks the centenary of that conflict commencing, we would do well to recall the words of Harry Patch, the ‘last fighting Tommy.’ Harry warned against the dangers of glamourising warfare. He knew at first hand its true horrors but died sure in the knowledge that, whilst our planet is still strife riven, war on our own continent had been made unthinkable by shared membership of both the European Union and NATO.

Meanwhile, the financial climate for national and local government has remained difficult and communities across Wales - including our own - are braced for further bad news in terms of local services and facilities under threat. However, as I have noted in successive Wye Local columns, our town has been winning plaudits for its renewed sense of civic pride and for the evident way in which individuals and businesses have shown the determination to ‘buck the trend.’

Just recently, local residents became aware of a move to convert nos 2 and 3 Bell Street to bedsit flats, by seeking a change of use from

retail to residential. At its December meeting, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority’s Planning Access and Rights of Way (PAROW) Committee took the wise decision to defer the application for determination following a site visit. I have grave concerns about the potential loss of these shops, given the recent surge in business activity locally, combined with the absence of any retail space for let in the town. In my view, any decision on the future designation of Bell Street properties needs to be informed by a familiarity with local circumstances and a robust market assessment.

In the New Year, we will learn more about the Powys tLHB’s forward plans for Bronllys Hospital. I recently secured a commitment from the Health Board with respect to the future of the Pain Management Clinic, following the intervention of First Minister Carwyn Jones. However, I share the concern of many local residents over the CHC’s apparent acquiescence to the Health Board over moving the Stroke Unit to Brecon Hospital, without addressing important caveats identified during the consultation period.

At the moment, we are still enjoying the wonderful efforts of Talgarth Lights Group and we really do owe them a debt of gratitude this year. We are so lucky to have such a pool of local volunteers in our community – without them our lives would be so much the poorer. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me on 07703 112113 or email: [email protected] My next advice surgery is on Friday 3rd January from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre.

Happy New Year

William

News from Glasbury Wardby Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury

May I start by wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous 2014. A New Year with New Challenges and New Beginnings.

Last year ended with a great deal of uncertainty and confusion at County Hall with a near complete change of cabinet members and the two independent groups at loggerheads. With so many major decisions to be made and 20 million pounds to be removed from the budget this coming year, it is vital that we have a strong and stable leadership. Hopefully things will get onto an even keel soon.

A major issue that is causing concern is the future of the public toilets in Glasbury. There is still discussion to be had with business and residents regarding this issue, but it must be mentioned that the Community Council has spent many hours on this issue and should be congratulated along with the communities on both sides of the

river for their resolve in this matter.

Another “hot potato” is the proposed erection of a large wind turbine on Cold Blow above Clyro. There has been a great deal of concern from many residents about this issue, born out by the 150 people who attended the public meeting. I will do my utmost to ensure that common sense prevails and would encourage anyone with strong feelings to write to Powys Planning Department with their concerns. The consultation period is still open.

Best wishes

Chris

News from Glasbury VillageHappy New Year to all Wye Local readers, may it be a good one for you all.

January is a busy month for Glasbury Arts starting with the Annual Arts Lecture on Saturday 18th given by one of Wales’ leading ceramicists Lowri Davies; Sunday 19th sees the start of a three session writing course and competition for young people aged 7 – 12 with Glasbury’s own leading writer for young people, Jenny Valentine; and on Saturday 25th a day with Shakespeare in the form of an afternoon workshop and an evening performance by the Willow Globe Theatre Company of All’s well that Ends Well – full details on page 6.

The name “Women’s Institute”, more affectionately known as the “WI”, conjures up all kinds of images ranging from jam making, to calendar girls, to being about the only group that successfully shouted down Tony Blair and reduced him to jelly! The local organisations have been a mainstay of communities for generations, but rather like churches, have struggled to maintain numbers, so the news that the Glasbury branch closed just before Christmas invoked a feeling of sadness in this writer. Glasbury WI has contributed so much to our village over the years, just to quote two examples you will see what I mean. When Glasbury Village Hall was trying to raise £70,000 for its refurbishment, we found ourselves £300 short as the last bills were coming in and, without being asked it was our local WI which came to the rescue. Similarly, over the last ten years they have been a big supporter of Glasbury Arts for which I personally am in their debt. So thank you members of the Glasbury WI past and present, for all you have done for our village and we wish all of you well.

News from Gwernyfed High SchoolWith lots of fund-raising activities organised

by the Sixth Form, there were plenty of

opportunities for both staff and pupils to

Who owns Hay Castle?

For the first time ever, Hay Castle is held in trust for the public.

What happens there?

In 2013, the castle welcomed 1000s of visitors. There were fundraising events for community groups, training courses run by the Clifford-based Traditional Building Skills Company, hundreds of guided tours, dragon egg hunts with local school children, live music, talks, and much more. To keep track of events in 2014, book a guided tour for your group, or even hire Hay Castle, go to www.haycastletrust.org.

What is the Hay Castle Trust?

This is the charity responsible for the care of Hay Castle. Coordinated by a Board of Trustees, the

charity is working hard to raise the funds necessary to transform the Castle into a lively and valuable part of the community. In April we will find out whether or not a major grant application to the Heritage Lottery Fund has been successful.

What will it be?

Hay Castle will become a major destination for heritage, arts, education and training. The buildings will be rescued from further deterioration and sensitively restored; a café and restaurant will become a hub of culinary skills training for all abilities; and activities, workshops, and touring exhibitions will engage people of all ages.

How can I get involved?

You can join the Friends of Hay Castle, become a volunteer, or sign up for our newsletter. To find out more, visit the website or email [email protected].

News from

Building work on the Cheese Market is

progressing well and Jenkinson builders are

doing a fantastic job. Scaffolding is due to come

down later this month, but the barriers will

remain in place until building work is complete

to allow the men some space to work, take

deliveries and house the skips. Work is due to

end in February.

We have been analysing paint samples to give

us a better idea of how the building has been

used over the years and to put a date to key

developments within its structure. We found

some beautiful hand-painted wall designs

dating from the 19th Century that were

probably commissioned by the Hay Lodge

of Free Masons when they used the upstairs

space. To have a look please visit the Cheese

Market Facebook page online.

The Cheese Market flat, that will accommodate

two, will be available to hire from end April

2014. Centrally located and historic, with

beautiful views over the rooftops of Hay, this

should be a fantastic space for visitors to the

town to enjoy. We are taking bookings now!

All enquiries should be directed to:

News from

We’re delighted to say that our biggest project yet is now underway – our office at the Castle is now open on Thursdays and Fridays from 9am to 3pm, and we have launched our new Volunteer Service. With funding from PAVO, the Volunteer Service is already matching people with opportunities and offering support and guidance to anyone involved with volunteering. Have a look at www.volunteering-wales.net for our current vacancies, or call in to the office for a cuppa and a chat.

When we asked for donations of equipment for the office we didn’t expect anywhere near as much as we received – people have been extremely generous and we are very grateful. The Castle office resources are available to the community – a PC, printer, A3/A4 photocopier and meeting room as well as several places to display and share information. We’re happy to pass on promotional material for local organisations so please include us in your distribution list and feel free to help yourself to space on the outdoor noticeboard for your posters, adverts and messages. Give us a shout if we can help your organisation – 07746 995613, or email [email protected].

Members of Hay Together benefit from being part of a strong collective with a powerful voice. Our membership continues to grow, and we have seen a particular increase in organisational and youth memberships. We believe that Hay Together’s work will impact positively on everyone in Hay, and would encourage you to join if you haven’t already. Members can use the Hay Together logo and will be able to share information and resources with other members.

With our very best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous New Year,

Rodney, Johnny, Nick and Ellie

News from HayTown CouncilAnother year has passed with Christmas bringing lots of great well-attended events to Hay. The Winter Literature Festival bought many famous faces, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Marcus Brigstocke. The weekend coincided with the switching on of the Christmas lights by our own local Mac Eager, during an evening of fun and entertainment by the wonderful Hay Community Choir, and the children from Hay School singing traditional carols which bought a smile to all of our faces. It was also the launch of ‘Totally locally’ a scheme to encourage you to shop in our independent shops and businesses.

Powys County Council’s determination to pass the responsibility of our toilets over to the town does not abate. The Council members have been exploring every avenue to keep them open. On the 12th December, a well-attended public meeting was held, where it was evident that local opinion is supportive of maintaining this facility for our town. There have been meetings with senior officials from Powys County Council, a large petition, a demonstration and contact with Brecon Beacon’s National Park tourism department in an effort to gain support. Hay thrives on tourism and it would be ludicrous to not provide this service to our visitors. We hope to be able to report a resolution very soon.

Two new members have been welcomed onto the council, Helen Davies and myself (Dawn Lewis). Good attendance at our meetings continues to clearly demonstrate the public’s enthusiasm in ensuring that Hay strives to be the best that it can be.

On behalf of our Mayor and Town Council members, I close by wishing you all a happy and prosperous new year.

News from TimbuktuAfter a turbulent 2013, Hay2Timbuktu have had a positive start to 2014. A new online TV channel has been launched to cement the links between Hay and Timbuktu. The channel will show films made by and about the Hay community who have set up various projects that link with their twin town. It will also host features and news pieces produced by national media outlets, creating an educational resource for those interested in the issues facing the people of Timbuktu. Hand-held video cameras have been distributed to artisans and teachers in Timbuktu in the hope that they will record short films of their own which can be shown on the online channel. The channel has been set up by film-maker Tamara Gordon, who runs the popular Hay on TV website. Tamara aimed to recruit community film-makers to produce their own films about Timbuktu and has conducted group and one-to-one training sessions. Tamara hopes that the channel will raise awareness of the link between Hay and Timbuktu and encourage dialogue between the two towns: “I hope that people in both Hay and Timbuktu will be given a voice through film. The channel is a great opportunity to create conversations and learn about life in Mali”.You can view films on the channel at any time at: www.hay2timbuktutv.comThe Two Towns One World project has now come to an end. The funding has kick started a variety of projects including the Timbuktu walking trail; Drovers cycling group; pottery workshops; education work; storytelling with children; the Hay2Timbuktu online TV channel; a twinning celebration event at the Globe; and several music projects incorporating improvisation, Hay community choir, and a fundraising song. We hope these projects will continue in 2014 and provide opportunities for more people to get involved. The start of the year is a great time to think about getting involved with the work that Hay2Timbuktu do. To find out more, visit our website at www.hay2timbuktu.org.uk. We would love to hear from you!

Miss having a dog in your life? Some people say the best thing about being a grandparent is handing the children back at the end of the day. The canine equivalent for dogs is a company called Barking Mad.

Barking Mad offers a professional, caring service where pets are accommodated in a loving private home environment while their owners are away from home for whatever reason. Pets are suitably matched with a dog-loving host family who continue the owner’s existing routines for exercising and feeding, and whose environment is similar to the pet’s home.

Hosts are very special people. Above all they all dedicated dog lovers. Some hosts are retired people who miss the routine and exercise when they suddenly find themselves without a pet. Alternatively, they may be at home during the day with children or pets of their own, and a visiting dog complements their existing situation perfectly.

Hosting a holidaying hound is rewarding and great fun from the start. For many people becoming a host has quite literally changed their lives. Caring for a dog at home offers a real interest and unconditional love. Dog walking is incredibly sociable, a great way to keep fit – and you will always have some company on a country walk.

Leftover Christmas Turkey RecipesTurkey &Parsnip CurryCook:25 mins

Serves 4

This post-Christmas curry is full of flavour and so easy to make - even better, it’s all cooked in one pan, so there’s very little washing up

Ingredients

2 tbsp vegetable oil

2 onions, halved through the root and thinly sliced

500g parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks

5 tbsp Madras curry paste

400g can chopped tomatoes

500g/1lb 2oz boneless cooked turkey, cut into chunks

150g pot low-fat natural yogurt

cooked basmati rice, to serve

Method

Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the onions and fry gently for 10 minutes until they are softened and lightly coloured. Add the parsnips and stir well.

To make the curry, stir in the curry paste, then add the tomatoes with a little salt, and stir well. Add 1½ canfuls of water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the parsnips are just tender.

To finish, stir in the turkey chunks, cover the pan again and simmer for a further 5 minutes until the turkey is heated through. Remove from the heat. (The curry can now be cooled and frozen for up to 2 months.) Lightly swirl in the yogurt and serve with basmati rice.

Turkey CasseroleCook:25 mins

Serves 4

This one pot stew uses up all your roast dinner

leftovers in one go and has a great honey

mustard tang.

Ingredients

2 onions, finely chopped

1 eating apple, cored and chopped

2 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp dried sage, or 5 sage leaves, chopped

2 tbsp plain flour

300ml vegetable or chicken stock

2 tbsp wholegrain mustard

2 tbsp runny honey

400g-500g leftover turkey, shredded

about 350g leftover roasted vegetables like

roast potatoes, parsnips, celeriacs and carrots,

chunkily diced

Method

Fry the onion and apple in the oil until softened

in a casserole or deep pan. Stir in the sage for

1 min, then stir in the flour. Gradually stir in the

stock followed by the mustard and honey.

Bring up to a simmer and stir in the turkey and

roast veg. Cover and gently simmer for 15 mins

until turkey is piping hot. Season and eat with

mash or jacket potatoes.

Hay and District Writers’ CircleThe vibrant Hay Writers’ Circle has been running and renewing itself for thirty two years.

In the last year our membership has dropped due both to ill-health and some of our members moving away.

We have just introduced two new competitions. We have run an annual fiction prize for some years but now we are introducing a Poetry Competition in the spring and an exciting new one to be held each summer. The King of Hay has kindly agreed to this being known as the Richard Booth Prize for Non-Fiction. We are honoured our judge will be Rachel Cooke who has just published “In Her Brilliant Career, Ten Extraordinary Women of the 50’s” This has received rave reviews.

We need enthusiastic and reliable new members with a love of the written word. Come and be a guest at one of our meetings and see if you like us. We meet between 2.00 and 4.30 pm at member’s houses.

Feb is new JanSo we’re in January and everyone expects that I’m rushed off my feet and inundated with new clients - well they’d be wrong. After 17 years in this business I can tell you in advance it’ll be better than December but the health industry generally gets our next big influx in February. Now this was a mystery to me too, until a lass in our chemist said one year “you know why that is don’t you – we think we can do it all by ourselves until the end of January then realise we need people like you!”, so simultaneously making me feel like a fool because despite ‘all this experience’ I’d never thought of that!! Does this also resonate with you: You WANT to try and de-tox after all the gluttony of this season, you MIGHT have even had enough of eating all that rich food, you’d like to initiate exercise, and to start off you might make great tracks … BUT eventually the inertia fades and you end up a few pounds heavier than last November, and disheartened to boot. There are multifarious reasons this can happen – the media spinning yarns to create news, creating confusion, the food industry peddling the WRONG foods, magazines promoting different training regimes, friends who MIGHT try to sabotage your efforts

so they feel good about their own lack of willpower. These all create confusion. It’s rarely an individual’s fault and to make them feel it is, will only add to the sense of failure. But it IS worth pointing out that it’s ok to ask for help and this is where a health or fitness professional comes into their own (and there are plenty of us locally now). It’s ok because we’d never judge you; we’re in this Industry because we naturally care for your successful outcomes. We have no products to sell in the supermarkets which might make us bias in our nutritional advice. It’s good to ask as we have the training to ensure you’ll get the best programmes and the equipment to help this happen. Lastly – we give you the motivation to get you fit and Healthy and, best of all, the education; so that, if you ever wanted to – you can fly the nest and know what to do by yourself (that, for me is the ultimate in Personal Training). So join a class, or employ a Personal trainer, or enrol on our nutritional programmes, IF you feel yourself faltering. Because ultimately - it’s tough on your own! Artists Names? Christian Pattemore

Type of Artist? Singer/Songwriter/Musician

Range of Products? I recorded my first album “Three sides blind” last year, with a fantastic launch party at The Globe in Hay. I play gigs in and around Powys/Herefordshire but at the moment I seem to be playing more frequently in Cardiff and Bristol. Check out my website www.christianpattemore.com and Facebook www.facebook.com/chrispattemoremusic for music and videos

Where can your products be purchased? My album can be bought physically from my website www.christianpattemore.com or it can be downloaded from iTunes. Haydn at “Jukejoint”,The Backfold, Hay on Wye, has been a staunch supporter of my music ever since I moved up here from Somerset - he also holds a stock of my CD’s.

Price range? £10 for a CD or £7.99 for a download from iTunes

How long have you been an artist? All my life!! It was however, the death of my mother in 1994 that catapulted me into taking the leap of faith from part time banker/wannabe to full focus life path of music.

Where did you train or gain experience? I started playing the piano aged 7 then discovered bass guitar in Secondary school followed shortly after by teaching myself Acoustic guitar. Joined my first band aged 12 and by my late teens was fronting (bass and vocals) my own band all over the South West. Midge Ure spotted us in Bath and signed us as his backing band for a UK and International tour. Since then, when not writing and performing my own stuff, I’ve been a session musician working in a variety of studios in Wales and the South West

What has been your proudest moment? Holding

the first copy of “Three sides blind” and then performing it at The Green Man Festival 2013

What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I strive for excellence with every song that I write but, am such a perfectionist, I will often reject two-thirds of what I create just because It doesn’t reach my own expectations. My masterpiece? Am really proud of ALL of the tracks on “Three sides blind” but who knows what will come next?!

Have you any future plans for your work? My aim is to play as many gigs as I can get and promote my album to as wide an audience as possible. Am still gigging with session musician/mandolin guru Phil Andrews who has worked and toured with the likes of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin. I am also working on my next album

What advice would you give a local artist? The music industry is going through it’s lowest possible ebb at present but have faith in yourself and always be prepared to learn from others as well as from the inevitable knock backs. In the meantime develop a thick skin and get yourself a girlfriend with a well-paid, steady job!!! Believe in yourself and never lose hope!

What other local artists do you admire? Alex Valentine and Alan McGee. I wish I had got to know the late Mally Powell better than I did. He was immense in all ways; a true force of nature…

Artist statement: It isn’t easy being a musician but it is my passion. My music comes from the soul and, if by getting it out there I can give joy to even a few, I’ll be happy.

As Wye Local comes out we will be finishing off the old year and starting a new one. I hope that 2013 has been good to you all and that 2014 will be better.

We started this year gone having had snow and ice in November and December and what could have been a hard winter ahead. Thinking back I don’t recall any serious problems from the weather while driving round the countryside in the early hours of the morning. Although it’s nice to have a warm spell early on in the year it will frequently cause problems for the fruit which then blossoms early and doesn’t get pollinated. 2013 was the opposite and we have had a glut of tree fruit. The other big problem last year was the potato crop which suffered from excessive rain and which drove prices sky high - almost £20 a bag at one time, and that was in the wholesale market! Fortunately that is not a problem this year and prices are back to normal. It is noticeable that some root crops - particularly beetroot and turnips - have grown very large.

While I was in Bristol this morning I was told that there will be blood oranges before Christmas and that this year they will be sending some smaller fruit as well as the usual size. These are ideal for juicing. Also while I was there I saw a small sack of Guernsey New Potatoes. They look like Jersey Royals but, of course, are about 5 months sooner. They are sure to be expensive and I haven’t had a chance to try them yet but it shows that growers are everywhere trying new ideas to lengthen the seasons of each product. Although late in the season there were still some Muscat de Hambourg grapes - quite delicious but under rated because they have seeds in them. Quinces which from both the continent and Britain are well over have re-appeared being imported from Turkey. They are a nice big fruit with few marks or blemishes and an excellent scent - not too expensive either.

With January on us so cometh the Seville oranges and thus the marmalade making. Please don’t leave it too long as last year some customers put off the marmalade making and went without. If you want

to make it later get the oranges in and freeze them; this works very well and some people say it makes the job easier. As far as preserving goes there isn’t much else in January.

At the moment prices are very volatile so please keep your eyes open and be willing to change your menu plans at short notice. If it is imperative that you have a particular vegetable please order as most greengrocers will be keeping very limited stocks until the prices drop back again.

A Happy New Year to you all.

Busy Bees has recently celebrated our 10 years anniversary, what a fantastic achievement to be open for so long and how things have changed. We have gone from strength to strength and are now busier than ever. We held an open day for parents of past, present and future to come and look around the nursery’s environment having the chance to speak to staff, look through old photo albums and group photos, indulge in a cream tea, have your face painted and have a go on our stalls – jam jar tombola and Chinese auction. We also held an evening event at Hay Castle which included a promise auction with food and a band which raised a fantastic £1827.50p we thank all those who came to celebrate these and helped us to raise funds to continue to improve our nursery environment and provide further new opportunities for the children.

Christmas is always a busy time of the year for everyone. This year we will of course be making lots of Christmassy things with the children getting covered in glitter and paint no doubt. The children will be performing their Christmas play of ‘This is our gift’. We love a party and this year is no different, we are having soft play set up with games, party food and of course a ‘special’ visitor. We’d like to wish all our families Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

In the New Year we hope to continue providing good quality childcare enabling the children to learn and develop within a trusted environment being involved in fun activities to help them reach their full potential.

Poem CornerAutumn Fayre

Where do Cornflakes come from?

The answer’s plain to see

Our Silver Birch has golden leaves,

so dry and crinkley

The wind has blown them on the floor

Which leaves its branches bare

Its paper bark is white like milk

It sounds like breakfast fayre!

So now my grass is covered

I’ll rake them in a heap

Oh, that’s a cereal you say

I’ll write some more next week!

Design Trends for 2014

After a couple of years of shabby, industrial or retro chic, 2014 is going to take it to the next stage and become truly TRUE RECLAIMED vintage with a highlight on BESPOKE HANDCRAFTED FURNITURE.

Earthy tones are now crying out for a cheerful PASTELS (yellows, greens) vibe that BOLDLY contrasts with opposite colours (blues, pinks, reds)to lift the spirits and add energy.

The trend for motifs of birds, bees and butterflies will still be going strong with woodland creatures like FOXES AND OWLS introduced, and other yesteryear FLORAL KITSCH will come to your attention, like granny’s curtain fabric and knitted tea cosies. If you like, go for crafty and mix in a bit of ETHNIC (Spanish, North American and Morroccan) as these designs will be emerging as a huge trend. Or even BOLD GEOMETRICs and strong vertical or horizontal LINEAR shapes will work too.

The old mantra of “less is more” MINIMILIST will continue into 2014 with a continuation of spaces that are clean, airy and simple, but this time balanced with lots of TACTILE textures and pieces. Think opulent plush sheepskin rugs, swishy silk puffy curtains, wall hung or simply displayed handmade artisan CRAFTS OR BESPOKE ORGANIC FURNITURE a design feature.

Whatever “look” you wish to create, contact Westbrook Interiors and we can help to create your new space.Very many thanks!

Baskerville Hall Acoustic WednesdayEvery Wednesday evening live music emanates from Baskerville Hall.Unusual for these days this music is all entirely acoustic – no humming guitar leads, no lugging amplifiers, no squeaking microphones.

The benefits:1. It is quick and easy to switch between lead performers and everyone is at the same volume level, so joining-in is easy.

2. The music is almost continuous – no “testing, testing, one, two” – trying to balance overloud guitar with overloud vocal - which seems to take forever, often killing any atmosphere.

3. It is more collaborative and friendly – trying new tunes, playing with people and not at them.

4. You can interact with the audience because they too can join-in, and not be drowned out.

This is not to say that Open Mic’s do not have their place, and there are many locally that do a fine job, it’s just that at Baskerville Hall every Wednesday, we prefer to be a little more relaxed.

Winter Road Cycling In spring last year, my neighbour Lucy and I decided to do a weekly bike ride. We picked Tuesday evenings because it was the only night we were both free. Lucy has 4 young children that keep her very busy during the day and she was in dire need of some ‘me time’ and sensible adult conversation. We agreed sensible conversation would be difficult but thought we would try the cycling regardless.

It was a great time to start, with the evenings lengthening and warming. We rode locally for about 12 miles, pausing at a friendly pub to sample the real ales. We have built up our fitness and now find 20 miles an easy evening stint. Inevitably the nights have drawn in and winter has arrived but we still enjoy cycling, spurred on and enthused by each other.

Road cycling can be a risky business at the best of times. We are both acutely aware of the extra dangers of winter cycling but we don’t want to loose our fitness or miss out on our evenings together.

To make sure we are visible in the dark, we have bought really powerful sets of front and backlights and ultra bright fluorescent clothing. Even with these precautions we realize there will be times when road cycling would be foolhardy. We will avoid riding out if it’s raining hard or likely to freeze and will definitely not go if its snowing. When possible we are choosing to cycle during the day and this will become easier, as Lucy’s children start primary school. But we still hope to go out when it’s dark because it’s great fun, even though it’s a bit colder and wetter.

We have tried to keep ourselves safe but although the majority of drivers are really mindful, occasionally we have to cope with inconsiderate and dangerous driving.

Some drivers fail to slow down when they pass, many don’t give us enough room to move as they speed by. Although we may look stable, we often have to swerve to avoid potholes and roadside debris. That’s why some cyclists ride side by side (instead of single file), to ensure motorist have to

slow down and move out sufficiently to overtake safely.

It’s as if some drivers are really cross with cyclists and occasionally we even have a burning cigarette end thrown. Why this reaction? As a rule we don’t ride on pavements, nor weave in and out of traffic and definitively never jump traffic lights. We pay Road Tax but choose to leave our cars at home whilst out on our bikes.

So please keep a careful look out for cyclists during these cold, dark, winter evenings and hopefully we will all stay safe.

Boughrood Cycling Club welcomes new riders. Enthusiasm is more important than ability. Regular summer rides from Boughrood bus stop at 6.15pm and during winter (as regularly as possible), leaving 6pm (Fluorescent clothing and good lights are essential). Support Your Local Sports Centre! What with the recent furore, in the press, about closing public conveniences and closures of local swimming pools (Hay and Brecon) the pendulum now appears to swing to Sports and Leisure services.

Local Three Cocks Sports Centre is one such facility destined for changes. If you have never heard of it, that’s because Council Run Services don’t always appear to use business methodology when it comes to publicity and promotion. The “Gwernyfed Sports Centre” is based up at Gwernyfed High School and you could be forgiven for not knowing it was there. There are no bright signs pointing the way to it (Up the school drive and turn right at the school entrance and carry on up some steps). In fairness, there is a tired small black and white sign to the left of the road entrance, below the colourful Gwernyfed sign. Look out for it next time you’re passing.

Publicity of similar local business services fully utilise the web; paid adverts in papers, special offers and contributions to local magazines on a consistent and regular basis, to great effect I am told. So, is this why the Gwernyfed Sports Centre loses money and is not run to its full potential ? What can be done to change the fortunes of such a valuable service to the local community?

Some of it is, I was informed, due to lack of money, i.e. only 20 publicity A4 fliers could be afforded, to be distributed, showing what was available. (Gym facilities, Table Tennis, 5-a-side Football, Fencing, Netball, Judo, Badminton, Volleyball, Spinning, Kettlecise, Walk to run,Women’s running and circuits as well as a venue for children’s parties). There is such an array of activities that need to be used more, in order to make it self sustainable as well as ensure these wonderful services are kept local – and of course help us to get fitter!

As a user representative, I have heard that the

council is to discharge it’s responsibility and is looking for someone else to manage the Sports Centre, or possibly develop a not for profit organisation. As a result, I would ask you to check out the Gwernyfed Sports Centre and see what it has to offer ; or I fear it could ultimately be a case of “use it - or lose it”.

The staff are friendly and helpful and the facilities and activities are suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities.

To find out more about activity times ring: 01497847740 or, if you are a current user of the Sports Centre do ring and let me know your views, so that I can bring them up at the next Gwernyfed

Local Consultative Committee meeting.

Happy New Year fromHay Theatre CompanyREFLECTIONS Should Auld Acquaintance be forgot? How many of us sang Auld Lang Syne as the clock ticked over into a New Year and… should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?

The word “Reflection” has been used a great deal in the media recently regarding the death of Nelson Mandela, who lived for 95 years standing by his beliefs and consequently freeing a country from the grip of apartheid. We reflect on his remarkable life, the 27 years in prison, the day of his release and the continuation of his work as President of South Africa. We reflect on his courage, strength, wisdom and his capacity for forgiveness. What an extraordinary story for us to learn from.

So what do us lesser mortals have to teach people? As we grow older we become aware of how fast things change, but we might not be quite so aware that we hold the stories of how and why those changes took place. We collectively lived through those changes, whether it was the stand made against Hitler in WW2, the creation of the NHS, the first tractor, first light bulb or the first TV. There are many acquaintances met along the way, some great characters and some not so great.

Hay Theatre Company believe every person has a story to tell and what you may feel to be ordinary, younger people will find extraordinary, historical and of great educational value. Our project “Reflections” funded by Arts Council Wales, National Heritage and Elmely Foundation begins again on January 10th every Friday

afternoon at The Globe in Hay 1-30pm to 3-30pm. We need people aged 70+ to tell us about their lives in order to write a new play to be performed in October, by an intergenerational cast from Hay Theatre. We have already held 6 reminiscence sessions, and met some wonderful people. We have visited Brecon Day Hospital, Hay Day Dementia Cafe, and look forward to visiting Cartref Residential-Home, Llanigon and Hay Luncheon Clubs this month. Whoever you are and whatever your life experiences, Hay Theatre Company Need YOU!!! So please come along, have a chat and share some stories over a cuppa. Join us any Friday you like downstairs at

The Globe in Hay 1-30pm to 3-30pm, it’s easy access with tea and delicious cakes available. So should old acquaintance be forgot? We think not.
