Be honest. Does the look andfeel of your home in its naturalstate tend more towardsransacked than relaxed? Wellmoving house provides theideal opportunity to finally getorganised.

Relocation, if you think aboutit, is the only time in your lifeyou come face to face withevery single item that you own.

It can be a daunting prospect.As Lady Macbeth mighthave put it, who wouldhave thought theold home to haveso much stuff init?

But ChrissyHalton, ofKnutsford-basedInnerspaceInterior Design,and who as a memberof the Association ofDeclutterers and Organisers,tackles household junkmountains across the NorthWest, says taking stock can bean invigorating experience.

“People have a tendency tothink that their stuff definesthem, and they hang onto it,”

she says. “Some is important -but there’s a mountain of stuff,like junk mail and broken bitsand bobs, that gets into yourhouse and is just lost amongsteverything else.

“By getting rid of the junkyou can enjoy those possessionsthat really matter. And at theother end, when all you areopening up and seeing are thethings that mean the most to

you, it will be a joy tounpack.”

The truth is, saysChrissy, peopleuse only abouthalf of whatthey own. Therest they hangonto ‘just in

case’ or ‘forsentimental

reasons’. “People say they will

sort out as they unpack at thenew house, but once they’vemoved in it’s too easy to fill upa room or garage with itemsthey will sort out ‘one day,’”says Chrissie. “Then you areleft with the same issues asbefore.”

The acid test of whethersomething is worth taking iswhether you are prepared topay good money to have ittransported. Nine out of tentimes people decide it’s notworth the expense, says Chrissy.

Decluttering takes effort, notwo ways about it. The onlysolution is to take a deep breathand plunge in. Beginmethodically in the least usedplaces – and the easiest todeclutter - like the loft, cellar,garage or shed, advises Chrissy.Seeing those tasksaccomplished spurs you on totackle the more difficult livingareas.

In each space she labels threebags or boxes ‘rubbish’,‘charity’ and ‘to sell’.

At the end of a declutteringsession she advises taking thebags out of the house todiscourage moments ofweakness.

The key to staying sufficientlyruthless is to keep a clear visionof your new life in your newhome.

“Will you really use thatbread maker that has been in

the cupboard for eight years?Do you want to take uppainting again?

“You should only keepsomething if it’s needed forpractical reasons or is reallybeautiful,” says Chrissy.

But she concedes some itemsthat are neither useful norbeautiful prove impossible tothrow out. Dog-eared postcards,childhood toys and mum’s oldteapots have a habit offollowing us from house tohouse.

To keep these to a strictminimum Chrissy suggestsallocating one plastic storage‘Memory Box’ to each person.

“This is a trick which worksreally well with children’s stuff,which can get out of control,”she says.

“Another way to keep thenumber of sentimental itemsdown is to photograph themand create an album of thepictures. These are usually justas good as the actual items intriggering memories, and willtake up a fraction of the space,”she adds.

She says: “Make it a funafternoon where you sharememories, but also be firmthat nothing of theirs will begoing with you – they can takewhat they want of theirs totheir own homes now.”

It can be easy to becomediscouraged at the scale of thetask. Little and often is the answer.Chrissy recommends workingback from the date of themove and splitting the timeinto easily manageable chunkseach week, allowing a room orspace for each slot.

“Don’t let yourself besidetracked – which is themost common mistake madeat this time.” She says. “Focus

on the area you are sorting atthat time, and you won’tbecome overwhelmed.”

READY FOR REMOVALMoving house is as muchabout moving in as much asmoving out.

For a smooth transitionMike Gardner, owner ofLiverpool-basedGardnersRemovals,recommendslabeling boxeswith aninventory ofexactly whatis in it andwhich room it isdestined for. Markup boxes that containfragile items.

When his team pack up ahouse they start with all themost delicate items – whichtake the longest to wrap andpack.

“The strongest part of aplate are the edges so stackthem upright,” he advises.

“Put the heaviest items in thebottom and the whole box -generally tea chest sized -shouldn’t weigh more than15kilos.

“A box is packed correctlywhen you shake it and cannothear it make a tinging noise,”he adds.

Generally flat packfurniture is not

reassembled andsome removalteams won’ttake it, he says.Be warned, it

never goes backlike brand new.Check the removal

firm you use has liabilityinsurance and be realisticabout how much space youwill need, so the correct sizedvan can be used.

Concluding the letter, Cllr JoeAnderson wrote: “How can the CityCouncil support the Big Society andits aim to help communities domore for themselves when we willhave to cut the lifeline to hundreds of these vital andworthwhile groups?”

David Cameron hit back at PrimeMinister’s Questions by claimingthat the move was “politicallymotivated”. He said: “The cuts willmean that, by 2013, Liverpoolcouncil will go back to the level ofgrant it received in 2009, so what weare seeing is politically motivatedmoves by Labour councils.”

I’m a city girl and as a first timebuyer I wanted to stay central. I didn’twant to leave the city and buy a house,but when I saw what I could do with thespace it was perfect.

A lot of studios in otherdevelopments onlyhave showers butI’m a bath personand really neededthat so I am reallyhappy it has ashower and bath.The shower is araindrop powershower which islovely.

The kitchen is agood size with asmall dishwasher andfridge/freezer; It’sconvenient andfunctional for whatI need.

It is different not having aseparate bedroom buteverything else outweighs it.The studio is one of thebigger ones that wereavailable which is why Iwent for it.

I needed to maximise thespace with it being a studioand this was the best layoutwith the sofa angled away fromthe kitchen. My kitchen is inthe living area so I didn’t wantto be looking at it when I’m onthe sofa; it’s taking a bit ofadjusting having the bed inthe living area. The mirrorsalso open up the space.

I chose One Park Westbecause of location. Inthe past, I’ve lived outsideof the city but with theLiverpool Onedevelopment I wanted tobe in the thick of it. It’sso handy for everything,the bars and shops.The developmenthas a 24-hourconcierge so it’sreally safe andbecause I’m onmy own it’s a major factor.

I wanted to make the interiordesign very contemporary. Thewallpaper is from B&Q and matchesthe furnishings of black with goldtrimmings, which makes it very warmand cosy. Because I’m in such aconfined place I didn’t want to makeit massively themed. I have enoughspace for everything from a diningtable to a computer study area.

The wall you pick also has to bethe right one, and in bathrooms it is easier asthe wall should define a space, such as the wallbehind the bath or the two walls inside theshower enclosure.

Once you have decided on which wall to use,think of it as providing an opportunity for youto add contrasting texture and colours intoyour bathroom. t has been five months sinceC & D Properties relocatedto its city centre location

and business is looking good.I met director Ian Murray over aquick lunch at The Olive Press,which has just come under newmanagement, to talk about whatthe letting agents has been up tolately.

“I’ve been pleasantly surprisedat how quickly things havepicked up. I thought it would

take 12 months before peoplerealised we were here but we’vedone really well so far.” It’s clear how passionate anddedicated Ian is to his business,following his move to thecompany three years ago whichled to a complete rebrand andrelocation from Everton toTithebarn Street.

“We invested in technologyand we spent a lot of money onthe website and property portalswhich we’re really proud of. It’san obligation to the landlords,putting as much as you can onpromoting the property. I don’tthink there’s enough agents outthere doing it.”

The restaurant we choose for

our catch-up also happens to bea favourite with Ian and withmost of the business district asthey pop in for a meeting and anItalian-influenced lunch. Withan impressive lunch menu,choice was not a problem.Settling on the calamari formyself and the beef carpacciowith balsamic and tomatodressing for Ian, the dishes arriveat lightning speed. Ian, obviously enjoying the fresh

flavours, commented: “The beefis really nice, nice and thin,which you don’t often get,some places do carpaccio toothick which is wrong - this isdelicious.”

As with all agents, theconversation quickly turns to thestate of the lettings and salesmarket in the city, after all theyare well placed to see the trendsbefore anyone else. For 2011 thelettings market still looks strongwith no sign of slowing down;however, how quickly a propertyis let depends on who ismanaging it.

And this is where Ian excels.“Our official hours are 8.45 to5.15 but we do out of office hours

and on a Saturday it’s our busiestday. It is fairly common to hearabout agents who don’t turn upto showings with no phone call oranything - if anyone at C & D did that they would be lookingfor another job.”

The main dishes arrive lookingas lovely as the starter. Thebutternut squash ravioli withblue cheese and sage butter isthe best dish Ian has had inthe restaurant, and my tagliatellewith mushroom and spinach was satisfying.

The Olive Press is quite aninstitution on Castle Street butthat is all soon to changefollowing the recent purchase ofthe restaurant by LivingVentures, the original owners ofthe Living Room. Although

plans include turning it into agrill and expanding therestaurant space, I was veryhappy to hear they wereretaining the staff as they werethe highlight of the lunch. The future for C & D Propertieslies in commercial property, asthey look to expand theirportfolio this year. For Ian thenew office is still the big thing.“While we do embrace thetechnological side, it is still apeople business. People buy intopeople. If you look after peopleand get a good reputation thenthat’s good business practice.” It is little wonder landlords andtenants are flocking to C & DProperties, looking for a personaltouch in what is a verycompetitive business.
