The deadline for nominations forthe first ever Liverpool City RegionApprenticeship Awards is fastapproaching.

Hopefuls have until January 18 to submittheir entries for the awards, which celebratethe stars of tomorrow and recognise

High interest prior to theauction resulted in 15 propertiesbeing sold prior and a further 35properties then sold in the auctionroom or shortly after. More saleshave since completed post auctiontaking the sales percentage toalmost 70%.

about why he always plays the thug, conversations with Martin Scorsese andhow even future mob bosses can have a good sense of humour.

You are known as one of the mosthardworking actors out there,appearing in countless films, TV showsand even music videos. If you had topinpoint just one role which would yousay has been your favourite? I wouldsay Combo from This is England has beenmy favourite role. It was a role which Ireally immersed myself in, it was a verypassionate project and very close to me.Working with Shane Meadows I got tocreate a character that was very complex.Combo wasn’t just a racist, he was a veryconfused character and came from a hardbackground as a child. I would say I learntmore on that job than on any other to behonest. I realised that I could actually act. I also learnt a lot from little ThomasTurgoose about being real and in themoment as an actor. It was an absolute joyto do This is England and I still speak toThomas Turgoose a lot now, he calls me and

my wife granddad and grandma.You are known for playing ‘Thug with aheart’ characters who could bedismissed as stereotypical thugs butthen manage to show that even theyhave a side that people can relate to.Would you say you are drawn to thesecharacters? I don’t know about thug with aheart, (laughs) I play interesting characters. Itry to play characters which challenge me,characters I want the audience to like, butthen question themselves why they like them.I was in an episode of Bad Cop recently andwanted to play a character with absolutely noredeeming features. I wanted the audience tohate him instantly which I think worked,even my own mum said she was happy whenI eventually got shot in that one.Martin Scorsese has cast you twice inGangs of New York back in 2002 andmore recently in hit HBO TV seriesBoardwalk Empire. What is MartinScorsese like to work with and is it truehe has dubbed you his British JoePeschi? Yes, he has called me that (laughs)and he is absolutely brilliant to work with.When Boardwalk Empire came around I wasat home and I got a phone call that goes(adopts a New York accent): “Hey, How ya

doin. You home from work? I was like“Yeah, yeah.” And then he says: “So youwanna play Al Capone?” I was like “Yeah oksound!” Three weeks later I was on a planeto New York to film the series.What was it like pretending to be AlCapone in Boardwalk Empire? Great funactually. Al Capone is such an iconic figureand he has been played by some fantasticactors. But where we are trying to dosomething different is playing him fromwhen he was young. We wanted to showthat he was an alright kid at one point. Iknow that he was a psychopath and asociopath in many respects, but I doactually quite like him, he’s a funny guy. Wewanted to put across his sense of humour,show the humanity to him and show himwith his wife and kids at home. Obviouslythere is a long way to go before he becomesthe iconic Al Capone figure that we all knowand the person that he eventually was, so weget to show the journey.What is your favourite thing about yourhometown of Liverpool? The people.When I’m not working I try to get up here asmuch as I can, I’m always home to see myfriends, family and for the kids to see theirNan and Grandad.

By this tenet, Neil Campbell, aclassically trained guitarist,composer and creative campusmanager at Hope University, isexactly the right person for thejob of booking acts to playat the city’s CapstoneTheatre.

Praised by theClassical GuitarMagazine for‘outstandingoriginality of thought’in his ownperformances, he hasalso booked acts such asJah Wobble, Public ServiceBroadcasting and MOBO awardwinning Zoe Rahman for thepleasure of the Liverpool publicat large.

Last year the theatre, just 15minutes walk from the citycentre, saw Chilly Gonzales,Portico Quartet and rising pianostar Tigran play and is fastbecoming one of the most

exciting and innovative venuesin the city.

Over lunch at The Quarter, wetalk about just how he decideswhich artists to book for theintimate venue which seats up to286 gig-goers at a time.

“We book innovative anddifferent acts, interesting jazz,folk and world music that youmight not get to see anywhere

else in Liverpool,” saysNeil. “For a city that

has a history ofexcellenceproducing classichits, sometimesmusic that doesnot fall into thethree minute pop

song format canbe overlooked.“ Having previously

worked for HopeUniversity for ten years as asenior administrator of its artsand humanities faculty, Neil saysthat some of his biggestachievements at the theatre sofar include booking sell outconcerts with acts such as JuneTabor, Oysterband, KingCreosote and John Hopkins.

He has also been instrumental

in setting up Liverpool’s firstever Jazz Festival. Taking placefrom February 28 until March 3in the theatre, the festival isexpecting to pull jazz-enthusiastsinto Liverpool from across thecountry. Paid for concerts byinternational acts will becomplemented by free concertsfrom local bands. The festivalaims to bring together theculture of jazz bars and concertsall under one roof.

“There will be cutting-edge newBritish Jazz with a lot ofinstrumental virtuosic playing andimpressive musicianship but stillset within an accessible format,”says Neil. “We pick artists thatdon’t always fit into simple genresand so alongside recognisableelements of jazz there will befusions with rock, electronicmusic, reggae and merengue.”

International acts booked aspart of the festival includeCourtney Pine, a worldrenowned saxophonist whorecently featured on ‘Later ...with Jools Holland’ on BBC2and Mercury Music Prizenominated Roller Trio.

Back at the restaurant, mealsthoroughly enjoyed, benedict

pasta for me and a ceaser saladfor Neil, we note that TheQuarter on Faulkner Street has adistinctly home-grown,continental feel. Surrounded byhome-made breads, cakes anddelicacies, we also have agorgeous view of FaulknerStreet’s original granite cobbles,Blackburne House and TheAnglican Cathedral. Alongsidethis picturesque view ofLiverpool’s Georgian quarterthat is hard to rival, it is nosurprise that The Quarter isconsistently packed to the rafterswith diners who enjoy highquality food and a goodatmosphere.

On a parting note, Neilmanages to summarise theoverarching ethos behind all ofthe bookings at the theatre.
