advert in the local paper. “Imet a lot of frogs before myprince came along, but I reallydid know straight away that hewas the one,” she says. “He waskind, intelligent and loving, andwe made a good team. I had nodoubt at all about going downon one knee.”

Charity worker Glo had beenwidowed and Adrian, seniorproject manager for Bovis LendLease, had also been marriedbefore – but they were bothdetermined not to go down the‘boring’ registry office route.Both singers, the fact they weremad about theatre gave Glo anidea about a venue. Her bestfriend Bill Elms was marketingmanager at the Liverpool Empireand he specially obtained alicence for weddings there.

The production showing nearthe date they had set was CrazyFor You. “It was perfect,” says

Glo. “We asked if we could usethe set and amazingly got thego-ahead.”

Their wedding day was adazzling production in its ownright. The backdrop was a scenefrom 42nd Street, actress EithneBrowne was master of

ceremonies, three members ofopera group BOST sang showsongs, and guests in eveningdress formed the ‘audience’ inthe stalls. “Whenever I thinkback on our wedding now itconjures up something veryunique that showed everyone how

very much we loved and cared foreach other.” says Glo. “It wasdefinitely the best show in town!”

It’s hard to imagine that morethan a decade ago, the centrepieceof Liverpool’s finest park was nomore than crumbling facade - untila community of helpers stepped tobring the crowning glory back tothe park.

In these last 10 years, thePreservation Trust has worked topreserve and nurture the love forthis place, keeping it open and freeto visit, extending its openinghours in the summer so the warmbarmy evenings can be enjoyed.

Elizabeth-Anne Williams, thedirector at the Palm House, has

been there from the beginning,guiding the venue through nearlyone million visitors, more than 500events – from Easter egg hunts totea dances and concerts, andhundreds of weddings andcorporate events.

As part of the anniversary,they’ve collected a number ofinterviews from people involved inthe Palm House, and are displayingthe stories as an alternative historyat the Palm House stage - thestories are filled with moments oflove for the venue.

“My favourite moments arearriving in the morning, after acycle ride through the park andseeing the sun shining on the glassthrough the misty early morningfrost or leaving at night, lookingback, taking a moment to marvelat the lit up glory that is SeftonPark Palm House,” says Elizabeth-Anne Williams.

� Tall Ships, a ShantyFestival, regattas andhistoric canal boats will allbe part of a maritimespectacular on the RiverMersey, running from Friday,April 29, to Sunday, May 8.

Spring on the Waterfront is a freeten-day festival packed full of morethan 100 events for the wholefamily on land and water. Some ofthe world’s most famous TallShips, including Astrid and STAStavros S Niarchos, which is thefirst new tall ship built in Britainfor more than 12 years, will bedocked for the festival.

Julie Langan, a teacher at Woolton infants, and AnthonyLangan, a teacher at King George V College in Southport,bought a one-bedroom apartment at Mann Island, followingthe show apartment unveiling earlier this month. The couple,who have been married for 19 years, bought the apartmentas an investment for their retirement, renting it out until then.Prices start from £120,000 for a one-bedroom apartment.

The courtyard gives a senseof community; it is veryinclusive of your neighbours,but still remains private. Thebedroom is a good size, facingout onto the balcony andcourtyard - where you can havebreakfast or sit with friends.The bedroom is going to haveblackout blinds to give a senseof privacy because it faces ontothe courtyard.

The bathroom is very big,almost as big as the bedroom,with a powerful shower.Everything is very modern,and well designed.

We were in Venice a couple ofyears ago and stayed in a verymodern hotel, which is wherethe idea for a clear table andchairs came from. The masksare also from Venice, adding atouch of colour to the hallway.

Friends who have visited usare stunned by the inside ofMann Island. It’s all blackoutside, and all white inside.Our family home in Woolton isover 200 years old, so thefurnishings are moretraditional. This place is theopposite, with a contemporary,sharp look.

We were just looking at flats,and Mann Island keptpopping up, and we thought:‘Gosh, the position must beamazing with Liverpool ONEjust around the corner.’ Wewent to the show houseopening, and loved the positionso much we decided to take thebiggest risk we have ever taken.We are going to be renting itout and maybe in a few years,once our children are grown-up, we can move in here.

The kitchen came with a black finish, so we have designedthe open plan front room around it; black with touches of red,and very simple. I spotted the cabinet at John Lewis some timeago, and it was perfect for the room. The picture of the monkeyis from St Ives, called the Dawn of Aesthetics.

Macbeth will be the final major production for the Everyman Theatre beforeit closes the curtains on Saturday, July 2, for two years for a £28 million

redevelopment. Actor David Morrissey will return to this stage for the firsttime in 30 years to play the doomed king in the bloody tragedy. The

Liverpool-born actor talks to Your Move about training at the EverymanYouth Theatre and acting in the ‘Play That Shall Not Be Named’.

ow does it feel to be back onThe Everyman stage? This cityand this play is quite weird for

me, I used to run around the Everyman,the main theatre was very good to us as ayouth theatre. We used to run up to theactors, while they were having their lunch,and bombard them with questions. TheEveryman Youth Theatre was veryimportant to me because it was where Ifirst saw theatre, it was certainly where Ifirst saw new writing and theatre thatreflected the community, reflected whatwas going on in my city.You are known for doing rigorousresearch for your roles - how does itfeel playing a character with so manydifferent versions? I think you have toapproach it like any part rather than thinkof it as your place in an historical canon ofhaving done it. You just have to take it like

it’s being done for the first time, so that it’sjust a wonderful character. It’s such a greatstory so I just want to just tell that story andget involved in that character. The otherthing about the play is that it represents aturbulent world and I feel that is where Ilive now as well, as I read the play it’s sosimilar to the developments I see on TV.Macbeth is quite a challenging role, withall the psychological drama ofShakespeare’s play, can you draw on anypast roles to help you portray the king?What I’ve tried to do all my life is to haveas many various roles as possible, mixingit up. Macbeth is a challenge on manylevels, but I’ve dipped my toes into thattype of psychological person before. He isquite a tangible character as far as hisambition is concerned and hisruthlessness. I’m always ecstatically happyand proud whenever I go to any job really,and it’s mad that I just love going to workso it’s a privilege to play Macbeth. The Everyman Theatre has beenseminal in your acting career, tell us alittle more. It’s quite an emotional time tobe here, everything I learned about beingan actor was in here. I grew up wanting to

be an actor but in a household that didn’tknow anything about acting at all. It waslike saying to my parents I wanted to be anastronaut, so they had no idea what to dobecause it was a profession they had noidea about. Then I told my cousin and hewas going out with a girl who worked in thebox office here and he mentioned theEveryman Youth Theatre and I waswelcomed with open arms. It was the firsttime people took my idea of wanting to bean actor seriously because I wassurrounded by actors and performers. I wasin a part of Liverpool I didn’t know either,and I suddenly found this real culturalvibrancy with the music, writing andperformance. So, to be back hereperforming in this particular play makesme feel a little like a grown-up which Ihaven’t felt for a long time - part ofbecoming an actor was so I didn’t have togrow up. Every brick in the wall is amoment, so it’s serendipity.

I meet with Vernon Jackson,chief executive of VillagesHousing, at 60 Hope Street,for a lunch of traditionalBritish food, to talkabout the Knowsley‘village’ and itsmeteorictransformation. “It’squite a complexbusiness, but it’s allabout getting growth inthe community. Housingassociations and their tenantshave been doing the ‘Big Society’for the past 20 years,” he explainsas we look through the freshmenu of the day, with a range offish and spring dishes. comments: “Stockbridgehas historically not

had the bestreputation but ithas a lot going forit at the moment.It’s got a veryvibrant

community, crimeat one time was high

but over the last 18months after a lot of work

with Knowsley Council, SaferKnowsley Partnership andMerseyside Police it’s nowbecoming one of the better areasin Knowsley.”

With over half the staff livingwithin a 3-mile radius of the‘village’, they are local andunderstand local needs. Theimproved condition has alsomeant families are staying longerin Stockbridge Village. Withsuch a bright future ahead ofVillages Housing, and taking the‘village’ brand and mentality toother areas in need of successfulregeneration, it is little wondercommunities are happy toflourish and become a ‘village’.
