Liverpool barrister KathrynHughes was struggling to find aproperty to fit her growing family.After her mum sadly passed awayin 2009, Kathryn and her criminal

solicitor husband Ricky decidedher father Wilf would move inwith them and their threechildren. The family wanted tostay in Woolton but unfortunatelyfinding a property big enough forthe whole clan would leave littlechange from £1 million.

So Kathryn did what millions ofus dream of doing every day - shedecided to design her own home.And so ‘Rosewood’ was born.

The stunning six-bedroomproperty includes a feature sedumroof, a double height void diningroom and a separate annexenicknamed ‘Wilf ’s wing,’ whereKathryn’s father lives.

The Hughes family were nostrangers to self-builds, havingpreviously built their own homeon Linkstor Road, Woolton.

“The benefit of building yourown home is that you can plan itexactly how you want it,” saysKathryn.

While the architects wereinstrumental in the exterior designof the property, the interior wasmodeled as a higher specificationversion of the family’s first home.The designs included specialfeatures such as a wood-burningstove and under floor heating.

Mid-way through the buildKathryn discovered she wasexpecting her fourth child.

“We altered the design to makethe playroom bigger,” saysKathryn.

The build started in August2011 and was completed in Aprilof this year just in time to welcomethe family’s latest addition LottieRose who was born in a birthingpool in the living room.

“We did call in the professionalsto manage this build,” saysKathryn. “Sometimes people cantry to take on too much and theydon’t have the necessary expertise.It does cost more to bringprofessionals in but I don’t regreta penny.”

John McCall Architects helpeddesign the property and thebuilder was Russell Mitton atCaldway Homes Liverpool.

“This is our forever homenow,” says Kathryn. “We havedesigned it so we have everythingthe family needs and I couldnever see us moving.”

ince Scottish band, The View, burst onto the scene with theirfirst single “Wasted Little DJs” back in 2006, the Scots havecome a long way with a string of albums and a number of

festival performances under their belt. Kieren Webster, bassguitarist and occasional front man, took time out from his busyschedule to talk to Your Move about influences and the bandslove for Liverpool.

Your newest album “Cheeky for areason” is out on July 9th, what’s theinspiration behind the album? Just lifein general, love, lust, all that kind of stuff.What’s your favourite song off thealbum? It depends, right now it’s ‘HowLong’, which is going to be the firstdownload coming out. It’s my favouritebecause I look forward to playing it liveand fast, I like playing fast songs.Did you ever think the band would beas successful as they have been? No.Never. I always knew we would be makingmusic together but I never thought we’d bemaking number one albums and stuff.Did you always want to be in a band ordid you have different career plans?Since we started playing together when wewere 15 I’d always known I wanted to be ina band, but before that I don’t know what Iwanted to be, a musician or somethingboys usually want to be. Where do you see yourself in fiveyears time? Hopefully on the road still

making music with the band.What do you like doing in your sparetime? I like listening to records, walkingand taking photographs. What do you enjoy most abouttouring? When we tour I enjoy the factthat you are in a different city every night.You always have a gig and it’s like you’realways busy. Do you prefer smaller or biggervenues? I like the small ones because it’slike you are playing in the middle of aparty, and I like bigger ones because thescale of it all is just unreal. So they’ve bothgot their ups.

What’s one fact people probablywouldn’t know about you? There’s notvery much to me, I just play in The Viewand write songs.You and the band relocated toLiverpool to write your fourth albumBread and Circuses, why Liverpool?We’ve toured in Liverpool a lot and liked it,it’s got loads of good studios and stuff. Weworked together and wrote the songs in aflat in Aigburth. That’s why we came backto record the latest album this time as well,because we liked it so much in Liverpool.What’s your favourite thing aboutLiverpool? The people are really friendly;it’s got a lot of music history, the Beatlesand things. I’m a fan of the Beatles.What’s the bands main inspirationbehind your music? There are loads ofinspirations, the main inspiration everyonein the band likes is probably Oasis. TheClash, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, they’reprobably the biggies. But I mean everyoneindividually in the band has got their owninfluences that they like as well, so we haveto meet in the middle around that area.

Peter explains how the earlyadvice of a good property lawyeris equally as important whenselling a property as it is whenpurchasing.

“Again go and see asolicitor early on. Asolicitor can lookand if there areany problems thatneed to beresolved beforeyou sell theproperty. Thesethings can take acouple of weeks sothe quicker youidentify these issues thebetter.”
