Leo se ouer boetie, Alexander (5), moes noodgedwonge by die huis
agterbly by familie.

koste.
betrokke sal raak by die stryd teen kanker.

Well-known local taxi owner Mr Rabelani Wilson Musandiwa (64) was shot and killed at his home in Louis Trichardt last Thursday evening, 9 June.
Mr Musandiwa’s death is said to be related to taxi violence. The spokesperson for the Makhado Cluster Police, WO Kedibone Mbatha, told the Zoutpansberger that Musandiwa was shot at around 15:30. “He was shot from close range and we found 12 cartridges next to his body.”
Musandiwa was shot shortly after arriving at his home in Waterbessie Street. “It is alleged that Musandiwa had just come from a taxi meeting in Musina, when two unknown gunmen came out of nowhere and shot him,” said Mabatha. He said that it was not known whether the killers had been following him. Musandiwa was shot in his garden and police have since opened a case of murder.
Mabatha appealed to members of the public to assist them in their investigation in supplying information that can lead to an arrest. “Investi-gations continue and no one has been arrested yet,” Mabatha said.
Ms Julia Musandiwa, the widow of the de-ceased, said they suspected that her husband had been shot by somebody known to the family. “We are still shocked and terrified by his assassination. We used to regard him as our pillar of strength. He was always available to solve our problems,” she said.
Ms Musandiwa said that it was difficult to
understand why her husband had been killed. “He was a visionary and the strategic thinker of the family’s transport business.” According to her, she heard the shots, but thought they were fireworks. “When I looked through the window, I saw two men running away,” she added.
Musandiwa is survived by his wife and four children. He will be buried on Friday, 17 June, at Fondwe Tshiendeula at 18:00.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 17 JUNIE 2016 3
Net ‘n wonderwerk niemand sterf in ongeluk nie
Mohamed gesê. Alle
“Ek het my noodligte aangeskakel.

In Memoriam
Sy ouers was baie sportbewus.
In 1965 reeds verteenwoordig hy Noord-Transvaal as vleuel in een wedstryd teen Wes-Transvaal.
a a n g e w y s a s kaptein van die S p r i n g b o k - a t -let iekspan.
Langley se grootste erns was egter sy akademie.
Slegs in nederige stilte was dit sy eie.

In Memoriam
Haar hand was oop.

In Memoriam
Hy was 66 jaar oud.
Hy was veral ‘n geliefde gesig by die Gereformeerde Kerk hier in Louis Trichardt.
Ali se kanker is ontdek tydens ‘n heupvervangingsoperasie.
begrawe.

Horn ban in place again - Molewa ready for round 4
By Isabel Venter
It is once more illegal to sell rhino horns in South Africa.
This follows an application the Department of Environmental Affairs has lodged with the Consti-tutional Court. This latest court action means that the moratorium on domestic trading in rhino horn will stay in place for the time being.
Environmental Affairs Minister Ms Edna Molewa confi rmed last Monday (6th) that she had fi led an application for leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court. The moratorium was fi rst challenged in court by rhino breeder Mr Jo-han Kruger and his Mu-sina-based attorney Mr Hennie Erwee during 2012. During 2015, Mr John Hume, one of the country’s largest rhino breeders, also joined in the cause. Both of them argued that the moratorium had fuelled the dramatic increase in rhino poaching.
This led to the setting aside of the moratorium by the Pretoria High Court (HC) on 26 November last year, with immediate and retrospective effect. The court ruled in favour of Kruger and Hume on the basis that the govern-ment had failed to follow adequate public consul-tation processes before declaring the moratorium back in 2009.
Molewa immediately lodged an application to ask for leave to appeal the verdict. This applica-tion was denied, after which she approached the
Supreme Court of Appeal. This application was also dismissed, in May this year, with cost.
The Constitutional Court is currently the last sliver of hope the minister is clinging to, to get the HC ruling overturned.
In the meantime, Erwee said that was high time the minister admitted defeat and quit her department’s wasteful expenditure of taxpayers’ money on frivolous court cases. When contacted for comment last Friday, Erwee confi rmed that
he had read through the latest application of the minister. Erwee said he was confident that the original judgment would stand, seeing as the minister’s latest ap-plication was an exact copy of all her previous applications for leave to appeal.
Last week, Minister Molewa said that no permits to trade with rhino horn and/or any derivatives or products of horn would be issued by her department until the matter was fi nalized by the Constitutional Court. She further also
reminded the public that the HC’s judgment did not relate to the international trade in rhino horn for commercial purposes, which was still prohibited in terms of the provisions of the Convention on In-ternational Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
All eyes will be on both CITES and Molewa during the 17th conference of the parties, which will be held in Johannesburg from 24 September to 5 October this year.

The air wing coordinator and second in com-mand of Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado, Colonel Pine Pienaar, expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation to the Rotary Club of Louis Trichardt for what he described as an authentic character displayed by the club in support of needy children at AFB Makhado.
Pienaar was speaking during the handing over of 30 dictionaries by the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club to Braambos School at AFB Makhado on 10 June. He accepted the dictionaries on behalf of the officer commanding of AFB Makhado, Brigadier General André Russell Barends.
Also present to receive the donation was the school director, Mrs Victoria Njomo, as well as the school principal, Mrs Nancy Masehla. They were grateful for the donation. Njomo said that the donation came as a big surprise to them, while Masehla told the delegates that the dictionaries would benefit both the school and its learners. “The dictionaries will remain in the school library
as a tool for both the learners and the educators who want to empower themselves to better their knowledge,” Masehla said.
Speaking on behalf of the Louis Trichardt Ro-tary Club, club secretary Mr Godfrey Went said that the donation formed part of an international Rotary project by Rotary Club 50 of England. The club provides humanitarian assistance in the form of food and water for schools, clothes, books, wheelchairs and much more to needy communi-ties. The Rondebosch Rotary Club of Cape Town teamed up to receive tons of dictionaries to be distributed to various clubs all over the country. During a similar team effort, Rotary Club District 9400 of Bedfordview in Johannesburg donated wheelchairs to AFB Makhado in 2013 in support of people living with disabilities. Went added that, upon receiving the dictionaries, the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club had since also donated dictionaries to other schools in the Thohoyandou, Sinthumule, Kutama, Louis Trichardt, Nzhelele and Elim area. “I am convinced that these dictio-naries will serve their purpose,” Went said.
Rotary helps change lives
The Louis Trichardt Rotary Club paid a visit to Braambos School on 10 June, during which time they donated 30 dictionaries to the school. AFB Makhado chosen to be part of Warrant Officer’s Academy training
Military News
Air Force Base (AFB) Makha-do recently hosted a training session for the Warrant Offi-cers’ Academy from Pretoria as part of their Joint Warrant Officer’s Programme (JWOP).
The Warrant Officers Aca-demy, comprising seven staff members and 22 students, was led by WO Zakhele Sikopela and visited AFB Makhado on 24 May. The officer commanding of AFB Makhado, Brig Gen André Barends, hailed staff members of the JWOP for the contribution they made in ensuring that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was effective in
its tasks daily. The aim of the JWOP is to
train selected warrant officers (WOs) to function at both op-erational and military strategic levels within the Department of Defence (DOD). With a vision to be seen as an internationally recognised learning opportunity, the course is open to WOs from all African forces.
The academy visited AFB Makhado to learn more about its role and capabilities within the SANDF. Barends explained how AFB Makhado was strategically positioned to meet the demands of the SANDF in accordance with its constitutional mandate. He then reminded the WOs of
their role within the organization in support of their commander’s intent at any level within the DOD.
During their visit, the students also had the opportunity to learn more about 85 Combat Flying School, as well as 2 Squadron. The role and function of both units were explained to the stu-dents by among others the officer commanding of 85 Combat Fly-ing School, Lt Col Leeson, and the acting officer commanding of 2 Squadron, Lt Col Wilson. Fol-lowing their visit, Sikopela said that they had achieved their ob-jective, namely to enhance their learning curriculum during their operational planning module.

School News
Two pupils from Eric Louw High School in Mu-sina, Rishan Mazid (Grade 12) and Kuru Vansia (Grade 11), recently had the opportunity to attend a career expo sponsored by Venetia Mine.
The expo was held at the Gordon’s Institute of Business Studies and was attended by about 2 000 learners. Rishan and Kuru had the opportunity to choose the subjects they were interested in, e.g. engineering, IT and film study. Three class sessions
were attended, which gave them a glimpse into what university life would be. One of the highlights of the tour was meeting a master mechanical engi-neer, which made them motivated to work harder to pursue the same career.
“It was an absolute change of mindset for these two guys to see a classroom of 2 000 learners with so much determination and vision for the future. The one professor from Venda told them his back-ground history in becoming an engineer. He told them he was called to the USA for his excellence in
chemistry. He also said that it is not where you come from, but what you do to change it that will pave your path to success. Kuru felt these words were very rele-vant for learners com-ing from a small town like Musina,” said the school.
One last fascinating fact that was portrayed during the expo was a video showing that the knowledge of the human mind had doubled in a period of 25 years, and in 2025, knowledge will double in just 12 hours!
“Thank you to Mrs Kaunda who accompa-nied them and Venetia Mine that gave these learners the opportuni-ty,” said the school.Rishan Mazid and Kuru Vansia from Eric Louw High School, who were
sponsored by Venetia Mine to attend a mind-changing career expo. Photo supplied.

Musina het Saterdag hul heel eerste Boeremark aangebied. Die dag was so ‘n groot sukses dat drie kosstalletjies reeds vroeg moes oppak, want hulle ware was uitverkoop. Foto’s verskaf.

Nictus Limited has announced the appointment of Gerard Tromp as its new managing director, with effect from 18 April 2016. He follows in the footsteps of Nico Tromp, who stepped down after 37 years of service. Nico, who succeeded the group’s founder, P J de W Tromp, will continue to serve on the board as a non-executive director.
The board unconditionally approved Tromp’s succession in his father’s role, based on the balance of evidence of his experience, and his trustworthy managerial track record within the group.
Tromp said although his appointment might appear counter-intuitive, the benefit of the transfer over successive generations brought a long-term orientation toward sustainability in the group. Awareness of the responsibility of stewardship stretches back to his youth and looks ahead to generations to come. The long-term approach, he notes, also serves the interests of shareholders.
Speaking about his appointment, he said al-though three generations of the family had fostered the group’s growth through a transfer of values, the group’s values system was formalised in corporate philosophy and permeated management decisions on a day-to-day basis. The group, he said, pinned itself on King III governance principles, as well as managerial and operational best practices by appointing skilled, professional managers.
Talking about the future of the group, Tromp said its primary goal was long-term growth for its shareholders. Citing the Nictus 2015 annual report, he said the group showed strong growth, with 2015 assets increasing to R501 million, up by 15% from R433.7 million in 2014. The group stated assets of R334 million in 2013 subsequent to unbundling from its Namibian operations, with the same name, in 2012.
Tromp went on to say that the South African entity was currently reinvesting in the sustainable

development of its footprint in the furniture and short-term insurance segments. “We believe that, in spite of current volatility in the region, there is ample room for growth in the South African market, and that our reinvestment is a valid reflection of this operational priority,” he said.
Tromp added that rapid consumer uptake with-in the group’s footprint confirmed the value of reinvestment in growth. Growth, Tromp said, was underpinned the group’s ethos of service, value and consistent application of current best practice and integrity. “Our consistent growth since unbundling has given us a clear indication that this is indeed the case,” he concluded. ZOUTPANSBERGER, 17 JUNIE 2016 13
For the next two weeks, we’re visiting a street that was presumably named after another president, MW Pretorius. It may end up being a very controversial article, but hopefully the history won’t offend (too much). The history of the Zoutpansberg is fi lled with stories of bravery, tenacity and triumph when the odds were against the locals, but it also has the sad tales of cruelty, deceit and inhu-mane acts. Especially the early history was fi lled with acts of war and brutality, but then again, it was over 150 years ago and the rules and circumstances were very different from what we are used to today.
As usual we try and focus on the impact that the people whose names appear on the street poles had on the Soutpansberg region, which means the story will devi-ate and fi nd its own path.
President MW Pretorius was no stranger to the people of the Zoutpansberg. He visited the area on at least two occasions and he was very involved in processes to try and diffuse the animosity between the settlers

attacks on the Schoemansdallers, while Albas-ini’s Tsonga warriors engaged in a war against Madzivhandila, another Venda chief.
In July 1865, Pretorius sent a delegation, com-prising MJ Schoeman, CN Smit and GJ Verdoorn, to investigate and possibly put an end to the violence. Prior to their visit, a group of Zoutpans-bergers, under leadership of Commandant SM Venter, reached a provisional peace agreement with Makhado and his “general”, Funyufunyu.
e ZAR delegation was later criticized for try-ing to meddle in a airs of which they clearly had little understanding. e Venda groups did not know or trust the delegation and a series of mis-understandings led to more attacks. When two
of Makhado and Madzhie’s representatives, Fleur and Makoebie, appeared before
the commission, they questioned the commission’s authority
(because Pretorius and Kruger were not present). Both were arrested a er appearing and placed in Albasini’s custody, which clearly did not promote an atmosphere wherein a peaceful settle-ment could be reached.
When the Schoeman commission le the Zout-
pansberg at the end of July 1865, they seemed to have
reached the conclusion that the con ict could only be ended by
sending in a commando to subjugate the rebellious Venda chiefs. e manner in
which the spoils of the war would be divided (which included the women and children cap-tured) was also discussed. e commission did blame some white settlers for causing the con ict but, as far as could be established, did not propose any action against them.
e reality was, however, that the able men in the rest of the ZAR were not so keen on assisting their kinsmen in the Zoutpansberg to make war. e commando in Rustenburg, among others, did not have a lot of sympathy with the Schoemans-dallers and reckoned they had caused their own problems by allowing their weapons to end up in the hands of the Venda tribes. ey were also or-dered by Pretorius to assist the burgers in Utrecht and Wakkerstroom with the wars that had broken out there.
President MW Pretorius had quite a busy period trying to extinguish res throughout the ZAR. In August 1865, he convinced the executive committee to assist the Free State and declared war on Moshweshwe. Schoeman, who had to lead the commando to the north, was thus le without men and also without su cient ammunition. Even the Waterberg “krygers” turned around when their commandant opted to rather go to Pretoria.
e next two years were marked by some vicious battles in the Zoutpansberg between the white residents, supported by among others the Tsonga warriors under leadership of Njakanjaka, and the VhaVenda. Chiefs such as Neluvhola and Magoro were attacked to weaken Makhado and Madzhie’s power. ese attacks o en met with erce criticism from within the ZAR, because of the manner in which they were perpetrated. e battle against Magoro was one example of the extent of the brutalities.
A combined force of about 1 000 Tsonga warriors, accompanied by Albasini, joined the ght against Chief Magoro. e Zoutpansberg-ers were led by either Asst Cmdt Genl Geyser or Cmdt SM Venter. A er some erce ghting, the battle ended on 13 August 1865. More than 300 of Magoro’s men were killed, while 50 Tsonga warriors were wounded and two killed. A er the battle, the Venda women were distributed among the Tsonga warriors, while the Boer ghters each received two children to be “booked in”. Only two members of the ZAR force, Alexander Struben and NT Oelofse, refused to take the children. More about these child slaves later.
e attacks by the Venda were on occasion brutal and merciless. A certain Hans Fourie was captured en route to Chief Lwamondo’s head-quarters. His head was cut o and placed on a pole next to the road. It was later reported to the missionary, Stefanus Hofmeyr, that Chief Lwa-mondo used his skin as a “karos” (blanket).
MW Pretorius was the son of the famous Voortrekker leader, Andries Pretorius. He
was born on 17 September 1819 in Graa -Reinett in the Cape Colony. At the age of 19 he joined his parents when the families embarked on the Great Trek to the north. In 1838, his father headed the expedition to punish the Zulu leader, Dingane, for the murders of the Piet Retief group. MW Pretorius joined him and formed part of the Boer forces at the battle of Blood River.
In 1839, MW Pretorius married Aletta Magda-lena Smit and the couple had one daughter. ey initially resided in the Pietermaritzburg area, but later moved to Potchefstroom where, a er the death of his father, he became the new commandant-general of the district.
In 1852, the Zuid-Afrikaan-sche Republic (ZAR) came into existence when the United Kingdom signed the Sand River Convention and thereby recognised the independence of the people living north of the Vaal River. In 1857, MW Pretorius was elected the rst president of this republic. One of his rst tasks was to try and unite the various factions in the republic. To try and settle the di erences about where a capital should be situated, he bought two farms on the banks of the Apies River. is new town would later become Pretoria, named a er his father, Andries Pretorius.
Pretorius’s rst encounter with the people of the Zoutpansberg may have been in 1864. e record states that he was present when the rst minister of the Reformed church (Hervormde Kerk), Rev NJ van Warmelo, was welcomed on 30 July 1864. At that stage, President Pretorius probably did not receive a very warm welcome. A lot of the local residents supported Stephanus Schoeman in the battle for the presidency of the ZAR and a few years earlier, in 1857, even refused to accept the new ag, the Vierkleur.
Schoemansdal, the little town at the foot of the mountains, was an important part of the ZAR. Apart from it being the administrative hub of the republic, it also produced a signi cant amount of revenue through the trade in, among others, ivory. Joao Albasini, who had several teams of elephant hunters, estimated that between 70 and 80 tons of ivory were annually exported to Natal and the Cape Colony with a value of about £200 000. is excluded the ivory that made its way to what is now known as Mozambique.
More and more white people settled in the Zoutpansberg and in 1861 the town of Schoe-mansdal boasted 70 houses. When the town was at its busiest, some 100 families stayed there.
Along with the in ux of people, the incidents of con ict escalated. e ZAR insisted that the various Venda chiefs pay “opgaaf” (tax) to the government. In 1855, a committee under lead-ership of Stephanus Schoeman decided that the chiefs should each pay, among others, ve cattle and ve elephant tusks per year. A number of government representatives, among them Joao Albasini, Michael de Buys and even a French citizen, JMA Logegary, were appointed to collect these taxes.
e con ict between the various Venda clans and the settlers grew in intensity and reached a boiling point when the Venda king, Ramabulana, died in 1864. His death caused a succession battle, with the main contenders being his sons Davhana and Makhado. Davhana immediately claimed the title and was also recognised by Albasini, the Native Commissioner at the time.
Makhado, with the assistance of the chiefs Madzhie and Nyakhuhu, attacked Davhana’s head-quarters and the latter had to ee. A lot of discontent existed among the Zoutpansberg people, with Albasini blaming people such as Magistrate Vercuiel for assisting Makhado. Al-basini later o ered protection to Davhana, much to the frustration of the new Venda king.
e ZAR’s executive committee, under leader-ship of Pretorius, must have had their hands full listening to reports and reading through corre-spondence explaining why the con ict continued. Makhado and Madzhie responded by launching

The times were a’changin for a controversial president (part 1)
Seeing that this story concerns MW Pretorius, we need to return to his role as president of the ZAR.
On 23 November 1865, the ZAR’s executive committee met and Pretorius and Kruger decided to “vrywillig de taak op zicht te nemen naar Z.P. Berg te gaan, ten einde al dat gene te doen, dat strekken kan zyn tot welzyn van dat District en te onderzoeken of een oorlog al dan niet onver-mydelik is” (to go to the Zoutpansberg to estab-lish whether a war was unavoidable).
e commission’s executive council started with a series of hearings in Schoemansdal that lasted from 16 December 1865 to 3 January 1866. In one of the rst decisions made, the captive Fleur (and probably Makoebie as well) was released. is opened the door for peace negotia-tions with the Venda leaders.
Pretorius and Kruger listened to a number of complaints against ZAR citizens and also consid-ered previous reports about alleged abuses and transgressions of the hunting laws. On 29 Decem-ber 1865, Chief Madzhie sent a message to the commission, indicating that he was in favour of a peace settlement. is gesture changed the sen-timents and may have prompted the decision of Pretorius and Kruger to re-appoint people such as magistrate Vercuiel and Duvenage, who were known to be on friendly terms with Makhado.
e ZAR commission, unfortunately, never crossed all the t’s and dotted the i’s. ey never met with Makhado or Madzhie and did not investigate the grievances against people in local leadership roles. Davhana was still under the “protection” of Albasini and, partly because of this, most Venda leaders re-fused to hand back any weapons to the ZAR.
Following a short period of relative peace, the con ict ared up again and the process repeated
for all of its residents. President Pretorius played a nal card to restore peace by sending Stephanus Schoeman, his son Hendrik, and SJ Meintjes to visit Schoemansdal and see what they could do. is mission also proved to be unsuccessful and it was clear that war was inevitable.
In May 1867, Commandant-general Paul Kru-ger started making his way with some 400 men to the Zoutpansberg. e battles that followed are, however, stories for another day. (Perhaps when we discuss Kruger Street). e end result was that the town of Schoemansdal was evacuated on 15 July 1867. Most of the residents, and even Kruger, le the town with tears in their eyes. Barely hours a er their leaving the town, it was burnt to the ground.
MW Pretorius resigned as president in 1871 and was succeeded by the Dutch Reformed church minister, TF Burgers. For the next couple of years he moved out of the public domain and it was only in 1877, when the British annexed the ZAR, that he stepped to the fore again. Along with Piet Joubert and Paul Kruger, he formed part of the triumvirate that ruled from 1880 to 1883.
When Paul Kruger became president of the ZAR in 1884, Pretorius le politics. He moved back to Potchefstroom where he lived until his death on 18 May 1901.Sources:* Boeyens, J.C.A.

at Schoemansdal and the Vhavenda. We take a closer look at these visits and the battles between, among others, Chief Madzhie and the Boer forces. The ZAR president was, how-ever, also accused of taking part in the dubious “inboekstelsel”, often described as another form of child slavery. We look at the impact that this practice had on the region and fi nd out whether some 4 000 Venda, Matebele, Betchuana and Swazi children were really sold as slaves.

Ja, so bely Dawid dit so mooi: Die Here sal my red uit die mag van hierdie Filistyn (vs. 37).

Hou jou kind naby jou hart
Vanoggend is anders. Baie anders.
Hy probeer homself eers versig-
“Koffie, Daisy. Koffie.”“Kom klim jy dadelik terug
in hierdie bed, Bernard Young! Dadelik!”
Nee, deksels, Bernard.
“Hier’s ek! Hier’s ek!” skree haar hele wrieme-lende lyf. “Klim terug onder die kombers,” skree Daisy.
“Dit gaan noodmaatreëls verg vanoggend,” dink Bernard hardop terwyl hy uitwyk.
Bernard is in alle opsigte ‘n “nice” man. In Waterpoort terme wat almal versta-an: ‘n @!#$%^&*!!! nice man.
In minder as ‘n uur is Bernard terug met ‘n oorlaaide skinkbord – ‘n pot warm sjokolade, ‘n pot melkkoffie, boerbeskuit, Woolies skons met kaas, en ... plaatkoekies. Warm. Vars. Geurig.
Sunshine kry eerste snuf in die
neus.
Magtig dis koud!
“Is jy nou heeltemal laf, ou Barries?
“The young generation ask me about our history”
Me.
Party se krisisse word net beter verdoesel as ander…
Die vraag is net: Gaan ek as ouer my vertroue behou in my plaaslike skool of verkies ek dat my kind die grootste deel van sy/haar tienerlewe onder wildvreemdes se skool- en koshuisdakke gaan studeer en bly?
Waar gaan ek as ouer my hulp en finansiële steun aanbied?
MF Manavhela, Manavhela village, Kutama, writes:
Greetings, and may peace flow upon your institution.
I am writing after I had read your Zoutpansberger newspaper of 29 January 2016 and more specifically the article “The Boer general who did not like to fight. Part 2.”
I am someone who likes to know more about the history of past generations.
I am requesting you to feed me with more information on the history of chiefs and others living in this area.
I often get approached by young people asking me for more informa-tion about the past and I tell them what I know. I am an old man, born on 12 September 1940. I grew up here in Venda and attended school here. I am also a member of the Royal Council of the Manavhela clan.
There is a book called The Chair of the Ramabulana and another, The History of the Western Soutpans-berg. If you know of any library having it or bookshop selling it, please inform me. I would like to have these books.
I have some collective history and information I would like to pass on to new generations.
Dear Mr ManavhelaThank you very much for your
letter. In our regular series of arti-cles focussing on the street names, we try to highlight the history of the region and we try and incorporate the Venda history as well. I will try and send you the articles that have thus far been published.
The books that you have men-tioned are valuable resources, but there are also numerous others. I do not know whether these are avail-able in the Louis Trichardt library, but I would expect them to be.
In the last two or three decades, some really good books have been published dealing with the history of the Zoutpansberg. You should also try and get hold of works of well-known Venda authors such as MH Nemudzivhadi. Try these:
* Braun, L.F. “Colonial Survey and Native Landscapes in Rural South Africa, 1850-1913”. Brill, 2015.
* Nemudzivhadi, M.H. “The Attempts by Makhado to Revive the Venda Kingdom 1864-1895”, Potchefstroom University for CHE, 1998.

Local off-road motorcycle enthusiasts are in for a treat this coming Saturday, 18 June.
Not only will the Aloe Rock MX club outside Louis Trichardt host the third round of the 2016 Northern Regions Motocross Championship, sanctioned by Motorsport South Africa, they will also play host to the 2016 Southern African MX Challenge, sanctioned by FIM Africa.
The weekend promises to draw close to 120 rid-
ers, including riders from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana who will compete against South Africa in the Southern African Challenge.
As from 08:00 already, the riders will be out on the track doing their practice rounds. The races will offi cially start from 09:00. There will be eight classes for two-wheel motorcycles from 50cc up to 450cc.
The Aloe Rock MX Club has put a lot of effort into making the weekends’ races possible and would really appreciate the communities’ support
as spectators. Off-road motorcycling is a high-oc-tane adrenaline sport with riders to keep the crowd thrilled with some extreme riding and spectacular jumps.
“Come early to reserve your seat under the trees next to the track for an awesome day of racing by some of South Africa’s top riders, as well as top riders from neighbouring countries,” invites the club. Own chairs, however, must be provided.
Entry to the event will cost R30. Ocean Basket, as well as other food stalls, will be on site to feed the
hungry, while later on in the day, visitors can enjoy a spitbraai. Tickets for the braai will cost R120 per adult and R60 for children under 12.
“Please books your meal ticket as soon as pos-sible,” said the club.
Please note that no own alcohol will be allowed on the premises. For the thirsty, a cash bar will be available. As for entertainment, this will be provided by well-known DJ Jonty.
For more information about the day’s activities, phone Bianca at Tel. 084 297 7274.
A weekend of extreme racing at Aloe Rock MX
One of Louis Trichardt’s top cyclists is now also a top cyclist in Zimbabwe. Kombo Bere was crowned the Zimbabwean mountain-bike champion, following an overall win during the past weekend’s Zimbabwe National Championships. Kombo completed six laps in 01:18. This race also helped prepare Kombo for when he will compete in the World Mountain Bike XCO Championships from 28 June to 3 July. He is still in need of funds (the trip totals about R40 000). Anybody who wishes to contribute can contact Stanley Thompson from Soutpansberg Youth Cycling Development (SYCD) at Tel 082 493 3897. Photo supplied.
