Dié se huis is, terwyl hy in Musina was, daardie selfde aand as die inbraak by hom, deur diewe feitlik leeggesteel.

Hierdie foto is verlede Donderdag geneem by Mooketsi Towing Services in Olifantstraat 80.

‘n Rukkie later vra my vrou: ‘Wie stap in die gang?’

Carel Breytenbach, ‘n kragopwekker gesteel.

Inbrake by wonings skiet die hoogte in

Mushome bly in ‘n woonstel agter Ocean Basket in Pieter Ottostraat.

There is still no progress in the town’s brutal and infamous “hand case.”

The 38yearold Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo, who stands accused of the murder of Rumbidzai Manyere (36), appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court again on Friday, 17 January. He was arrested almost eight

months ago, in April of last year, at Elti Café in Eltivillas, when he allegedly tried to rob the business by using a severed human arm.

The following day, Tshikhudo led the Makhado police to the place where the murdered Manyere’s body was found. Manyere’s right arm, both eyes and her private parts had been re

moved. Her body itself was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Tshikhudo is currently facing two counts of rape, and single counts of murder, housebreaking and robbery.

His case was postponed until 28 February. He will remain in custody until then.

Court News

Inquest follows drowning of babyThe SAPS at Musina have opened an inquest docket after a three-year-old baby drowned in a swimming pool at the mother’s work place on Mon-day.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, a 44yearold

mother, who works as a domestic worker at a local lodge, was busy cleaning when she noticed that the baby was not inside the house. “She went to look for the baby,” said Ramagwede. “Sadly, she found her inside the swimming pool.”

The woman then screamed for

help and another lady came over and jumped inside the water. She lifted the baby out of the swimming pool. “Unfortunately, the baby was already dead,” Ramagwede said. “As the police, we are calling on all mothers and guardians to always keep an eye on children.”

A member of the police service in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), suspected of aiding and abetting suspected robbers, has been suspended.

By Isabel Venter

Policeman suspended pending caseSgt Funanani Edwin Bugana (40) is currently

facing criminal charges after he allegedly misused state resources to supply robbers with police identification documents. Bugana is an LCRC (Local Criminal Record Centre) official, responsible for documenting crime scenes. He allegedly used his stateissued camera and computer to falsify the documents.

It was later revealed that he had also supplied the suspected robbers with a blue light and loaned them his private vehicle. Apart from being suspended, the newspaper has learned, Bugana is also facing an inhouse disciplinary hearing.

Bugana, together with the 38yearold Rudzani Victor Mphoshomali, was arrested after a botched robbery in Musina during December last year. Mphoshomali’s accomplices managed to elude arrest. After the two had had to spend Christmas and New Year in jail, they were released on R5 000 bail each. Their criminal case will be heard in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on 18 February.Sgt Funanani Edwin Bugana (40)

The infamous Doris Mthembi will now turn to the High Court for “justice” after her leave-to-appeal application was rejected.

The 41yearold Mthembi appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Monday, asking permission to appeal her sentence. She was handed a sixyear prison stay in November of last year, when she was found guilty of perjury.

Mthembi lied to the police when she accused her exhusband, Mr Goddard Tendani Mugwena, of kidnapping and raping her.

Mthembi, by means of her advocate, argued that the court had been too harsh and unfair when it handed down a custodial sentence to her. “The court was not merciful when they gave a direct imprisonment sentence, forgetting to take into consideration that she has little children to take care off,” said the advocate, Mr Ndleve. “She is not a danger to the public, as the court claimed in its verdict, and we are sure that another court would not have given such a harsh sentence, or maybe even a suspended sentence.”

Magistrate Pat Cloete did not agree and rejected

the application. He remarked that the cellphone evidence, brought by the State, was just too damming. “Those records disproved her version of the story beyond any reasonable doubt,” said Cloete.

On Monday, the court room was packed with family and friends of Doris who pitched up in her support. All of them were wearing white Tshirts, imprinted with slogans and Doris’s face. On the front of the Tshirts the question “Where’s justice for Doris?” with a somewhat dubious citation from

the Bible – Isaiah 53:15 was displayed. This particular chapter of Isaiah ends at verse 12.

After Mthembi was led back to the prison

vehicle that would take her back to Matatshe Prison, her supporters shouted at a journalist not to take photos. One supporter laughed, and told magistrate Cloete that they would meet again. Outside of the court room there was pandemonium when Mthembi’s sister got into a screaming match with Goddard, shouting at him: “You are a rapist!”

At the time of going to press, Mthembi’s legal team had yet to lodge an application with the High Court to have her case reviewed.

Doris Mthembi is supported by her hushand, Mr Joe Ragwala. He and a handful of supporters wore special T-shirts demanding justice for Doris.

The sound of gunshots broke the night silence in the vicinity of KFC Makhado on Monday when a victim of a botched robbery chased after two suspects.

The incident occurred near the KFC on the corner of Songozwi and Grobler Street. From eyewitness reports it seems as if the victim had bought some goods from a nearby supermarket and was walking along the road when he was approached

by the two robbers. They apparently threatened him with an object that looked like a firearm.

According to the communications officer at the Limpopo police’s media centre, Const Tsietsi Lamola, it is alleged that the victim of the alleged attempted armed robbery took out his licensed firearm. “He fired two warning shots,” he said. “The two unknown men fled the alleged crime scene.”

According to bystanders,

the alleged robbers ran down Grobler Street and vanished into some of the residential properties, with the victim chasing after them. As the victim turned to go back and collect his groceries, people who were standing in front the KFC noticed one of the suspects scuttling across the road from the side of the bird sanctuary. They shouted, “There is one of them!” but the suspect was gone.

Thief who wants to get clean gets fined A slippery soap thief found himself face to face with the law.

Tshifhiwa Nicholas Mabogo (22) appeared before the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday on a single count of shoplifting. According to information supplied by the police, they were summoned to the Bonjour conve

nience store at the Total garage in Krogh Street to investigate a case of shoplifting.

The police then noticed Mabogo walking along Krogh Street, with a face towel hanging over his shoulder. Police questioned Mabogo, asking him to produce proof of payment for the towel and a bar of soap he had with

him to the value of R23. When Mabogo failed to produce any proof, he was taken back to Bonjour, where security videos of the incident were reviewed. Mabogo was identified as the culprit.

On Monday, he was found guilty and sentenced to a fine R500 or one month imprisonment.

A pensioner discovered that he had been de-frauded when he used his SASSA card this month

“Please, let all those getting oldage grants read this, and if they can’t read, let their children read for them. I want to warn them to be very alert,” said Mr Joggie Pieterse (74) of Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Pieterse bought goods to the value of R174.90 at a shop in the Makhado Crossing mall with his SASSA card and asked the cashier to withdraw R300 for him. The cashier completed the transaction. “The cashier then said that a mistake had occurred and it had to be done again, whereafter the cashier did another transaction with my card, asking me for my pin number a second time,” said Pieterse. These transactions took place on New Year’s Day. The amount withdrawn should have been R474.90.

On 5 January, Pieterse went to withdraw money from a bank. “I realized that I was short of R200,” Pieterse said. He tried the ATMs of a couple of banks to get more information, but only Capitec Bank gave some information, which was the balance on the card. Pieterse decided to withdraw another R580 at an ATM before that got lost as well. The next step was to get a statement of the transactions to show that it did not match his till slips.

He called SASSA’s customer care line and held on for more than seven minutes. When he got through, he found that he couldn’t hear what the

person was saying, due to unclear speech. Pieterse therefore drove to his son, Francois, who was in Levubu at the time and asked him to phone.

They found that the only way that they could obtain a statement of the transactions on Pieterse’s SASSA card was to give an email address to Grindrod Financial Services. His son supplied an email address and they eventually received a statement (photo below), showing that R674.90 had been withdrawn at Pick n Pay instead of R474.90. The R200 was indeed gone. “I went back to Pick n Pay and the manager was very approachable and accommodating. I was fortunate to receive my R200 back on 8 January, but I was worried that this could happen to many pensioners in different places, without their even realizing it,” Pieterse said.

The manager of the local Pick n Pay, Mr Louis Jordaan, said on 13 January that the problem with Mr Pieterse had been sorted out and they were busy with procedures regarding the cashier involved. “You work with people and anything can happen, but we handle such cases immediately, following our internal procedures,” Jordaan said.

SASSA confirmed on 16 January that a pensioner will not be able to get a statement at a bank. Should the beneficiary of a social grant require a statement, it can be sent via email or fax. Should the beneficiary be unable to receive a statement by any of these ways, he or she can go to the SASSA office and ask them to get a printed statement .

Pension money gone after cashier’s “help”

“In future I think I shall withdraw the whole grant amount at once,” said Pieterse. That still might not be the solution, since carrying a lot of cash poses its own risks.

Wat is dit dié? Is dit ‘n park, ‘n oop ruimte of bloot ‘n baie groot, leë erf in Makhado (Louis Trichardt)?

“U kan ook bestel by 084 209 5189, maar moet die kos self kom haal,” voeg die gemeente by.• OBSERVATION EVENING The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) will hold its fi rst stargazing evening of the year on Saturday, 25 January, from sunset onwards.

The SAC’s stargazing evenings are open to the general public and everyone is welcome. The last quarter moon rises a couple of hours after midnight, giving us ample time for dark skies. The planet Jupiter was at opposition early in January and is well positioned for observing.

Jupiter’s most famous feature is its Great Red Spot (GRS). The spot was named around 1878 when it turned a vivid brick red, but in recent decades it has generally been a much less conspicuous pale tan. The Red Spot is a vast, longlived storm, spinning like a cyclone. However, unlike lowpressure cyclones and hurricanes on earth, the GRS rotates in a counterclockwise direc

tion in Jupiter’s southern hemisphere, showing that it is a highpressure system. The GRS will be near the central meridian at 20:97 and well placed for viewing. A shadow transit of one of the four Galilean moons, Ganymede, begins at 20:04 and ends at 23:22 and during this time one can observe the moon’s shadow as it crosses the Jovian disk.

Some of the deepsky objects that will be viewed are the Great Nebula in Orion (M42), a supernova remnant, the Crab Nebula (M1), NGC 2070, the Tarantula Nebula, as well as the ‘new star”, Nova Cent 2013, amongst many others.

Sampie Phaswana.

Christene is mense wie se natuur verander is.

“More, mooiste meisie in die hele wêreld!

“Ag, ou Daisy, ek is so bly party dinge bly altyd dieselfde!

Vanaand is jou vuurdoop daar by Nata waar ons gaan kamp. Hierdie Duitsers gaan lekker honger wees!

Daisy is in haar element.

“Jy weet ek is jou grootste fan, al het jy my hart gebreek toe jy daai stadsmannetjie bo my gekies het.

“Ek dink dit gebeur as mens regtig grootword, Baardman.

“Nou toe, Daisy. My volgende safari is eers oor twee weke.

“Politicians should show the same respect for the laws of the country”

Our new and fragile democracy is slipping irrevocably into an inev

itable “Idiocracy”! Our elected leaders are bulldozing idiotic legislation through our parliament, forcing courts to uphold these “laws” and expecting the electorate to accept and applaud their leadership. Actions which can only be described as such are being celebrated with the trumpeting of vuvuselas and the riotous dancing of illdisciplined throngs of an intimidated and vulnerable population.

I refer specifically to an incident at about 09:30 on a happily busy Saturday morning at the N1 / Songozwi St intersection. (Perhaps the busy activity on the intersection was obscured by the election propaganda poster illegally fitted to a traffic sign).

A cavalcade of high and mighty ministerial importance was en route to some or other indescribably important rendezvous north of Louis Trichardt. It’s always surprising that the wheels of government turn so tediously slowly when there is work that needs doing ... no amount of redtapecutting is able to speed it up, but it is regularly necessary to zoom politicians to and fro between appointments (which presumably were made in advance) at a vehicle speed and driving style which is illegal and seriously dangerous not only to the politicians and traffic authorities involved, but also to the unfortunate vassals who happen to be sharing the road with them.

This particular blue light cavalcade, consisting of two trafficdepartmentdriven escorts, two blackwindowed, very flashy, black SUVs (surely clear glass would en

hance the publicity of the individual and give the opportunity for an occasional royal wave, or am I being naive?) and a rear guard, blasted through the said intersection at great speed, ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD AND IN THE FACE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC, ma king no apparent effort to slow down or in any way acknowledge the stop signs. What kind of traffic safety training have these traffic officers had? What would have become of the hapless citizen, involved in his own little lifethreatening emergency, had he attempted to pull such a cavalier move? Reckless driving? A breathalyzer test? Most certainly an arrest, which is unthinkable on a Saturday morning. What would the outcome have been had there been an inexperienced driver at the stop street? These and other questions must surely come to mind.

I had the misfortune of being on a motorcycle approaching the intersection from the north and was acutely aware of my vulnerability should this idiotic behaviour go wrong, which it most thankfully did not.

This entire incident happened under the watchful eye of our country’s leader in the form of a ruling party advertisement which boldly proclaims “ANC live (sic) ANC leads.” The outrageous driving of the traffic officers leading the cavalcade and the authority that dictated it, did NOTHING to demonstrate either of the two sentiments expressed on the advertisement. What gives any politician the right to so flagrantly flaunt the very legislation that they promulgate? What gives

him or her the right to senselessly and recklessly endanger the lives of the very people who elected them in the first place. And then apparently be above the law when brought to book?

It appears that the ancient social law of “idiots elect, idiots rule” applies.

How tragic that this has become acceptable in this democracy which boasts one of the most modern constitutions on earth.

My appeal to the ministers of transport, safety and security, local government, all of them, and even the very President himself, is to start behaving in a manner which is worthy of emulating and is worthy of the approval of the electorate

AND civil servants. Lead from the front, by and with the example of “Leadership” and perhaps this country will be able to claw its way out of the pathetic state in which it now finds itself.

To road users in general my appeal is: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Don’t succumb to this slide into lawlessness and anarchy on our roads. We cannot expect the rule of law to just happen, we have to make it happen by being examplesetting, lawabiding citizens. Perhaps our “leaders” will eventually turn and follow our example.

Bruce Murray.Makhado (Louis Trichardt)

The Zoutpansberger’s office were inundated with telephone calls last Thursday from hawkers in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). They claimed that the officials from the municipality had been mistreating them for the past two weeks.

When a journalist arrived at the scene near Tasty Snacks in Burger Street, a group of hawkers was caucusing about their plight.

“Our municipality is out of order – how can they say we must go and operate our business at the Eltivillas bus terminal?” said one elderly lady. “Don’t they know that there’s no business down there?”

Ladies and youths produced their vendor’s licences which they had secured from the department which deals with traffic control at the Makhado Municipality. They claim that they are legal hawkers and request the municipality to stop chasing them from the streets.

“How will we support our families if we stop selling?” said Ms Florah Manenzhe (56), who started selling in the town’s streets in 1993. “I live in Tshikota, and I have got six mouths to feed.”

Emmanuel Muleya (29) has been a licensed RICA agent for the past three years. “I have seen

youths my age get into crime because there are no jobs available for most of us,” he said.

“They say we mustn’t conduct our business on this spot; where must we go now? All I am doing here is vuk’uzienzele (get on to your feet and do it yourself) but I am being ill treated. This is what musician BlackJahman sings about when he says municipalities persecute the hawkers.”

Another stallowner, Ms Konanani Kwinda (54), who operates public phones and sells snacks, said she had never neglected to pay for her licence. “People are selling illegal cigarettes publicly all over the town and they are doing nothing about it. Why us? What wrong did we do to deserve this kind of humiliation?”

The spokesperson for the Makhado Munici

pality, Mr Louis Bobodi, referred the newspaper to the Corporate Support and Shared Services’ office in the municipality. The human resources and labour relations manager, Adv Michael Makhado, acknowledged receipt of our media inquiry.

“Kindly take note that the email below has since been referred to the relevant directorate and our PR will get back to you in due course,” responded Adv Makhado.

Besprekings en navrae kan by Mokopane Besigheidskamer gedoen word via epos by [email protected] of soggens by 015 491 8458.

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has re-sponded to a public outcry on its decision to euthanize an elephant that had flipped over a vehicle belonging to a visiting British couple, injuring the oc-cupants on 30 December 2013.

Speaking from the Kruger National Park, the managing executive of this iconic park, Mr Abe Sibiya, said the incident was a consequence of parks’ allowing people to enjoy the natural environment; unfortunately, some did so in an irresponsible manner. “While it is expected in an environment such as the Kruger National Park that human and animal conflict will always occur, it is also vitally important that members of the public visiting various national parks should always adhere to the rules.”

Sibiya said while the park could understand the public outcry and anger towards the management, it was critical for the public to have confidence in the park management. “The park is managed by adequately qualified officials who are able to make informed and appropriate decisions at any given time.”

According to Sibiya, the decision to euthanize the animal was not taken lightly but based on the information from very experienced rangers’ assessment that the animal was likely to attack tourist vehicles in the future. “It is for this reason that we appeal to our patrons to act in a responsible manner and give such information as quickly as possible, rather than share it on social media platforms.”

He said that, to bring clo

sure to the matter, SANParks would need the cooperation of the visitors who had taken the video. “The law stipulates that evidence such as this should be accompanied by a written statement from eyewitnesses as the footage cannot be the only permissible evidence in order to sanction any fine against the alleged perpetrators.”

“Tourists need to change their behavior when on selfgame drives … we drive this message in our communication at checkin points, on our brochures and on the permits. It is totally impossible to have constant policing of holidaymakers as the park’s resources are already stretched with many operations going on at the same time,” concludes Sibiya.

SANParks responds to public outrage

A former lecturer at the University of Venda, Prof Jaco Kruger, is the editor of a new collec-tion of Venda ngano stories. Kruger is attached to the School of Music at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North West University (NWU).

Entitled The girls in the baobab: Venda stories from the Limpopo Valley (2013), the collection contains 43 ngano stories translated into English. Ngano are short stories that integrate speech with chanting and singing. The translations are accompanied by their original Tshivenda texts, song transcriptions and interpretations, while the entire collection is discussed in a comprehensive introduction.

The collection was documented from 2005 to 2011 in the Niani district by Kruger and Mr Mathuvhelo Mavhetha and translated by Rev Pfananani Masase and Mrs Tshifhiwa Mashau.

It is the third in a series on Venda verbal musical arts, focusing especially on the ngano genre. It has been produced under the auspices of a wider research project into local forms of musical art in South Africa, conducted by the School of Music at North West University (Potchefstroom Campus).

According to Kruger, the ngano project is an attempt to document as much as possible “of a rapidly disappearing art form. Ngano stories are of ancient, precolonial origin and have decreasing value in a changing world. Ngano performance no longer is a widespread communal activity, and very few people are able to recall

ngano stories from their earlier lives. It appears as if current the older generation is the last to carry memories of this once vital performance art.”

Contrary to popular belief, Kruger said, ngano are not mere “fireside tales” for children.

“The ngano genre in Africa is one of the foundations of morality and social relations, since they confirm and critically evaluate social norms and roles.”

He added that the ngano project welcomes aboard anyone concerned about the disappearance of ngano and asks interested persons to contact him at [email protected] or 072 539 1410.

Fietsrynuus
