Residents can again prepare them-selves for the annual Cansa (theCancer Association of South Afri-ca) shavethon.For the past 10 years people from

all walks of life have been getting in-volved in showing solidarity andsupport for cancer survivors byshaving, spraying or donating theirponytails for the annual CansaShavathon.This year’s Shavethon is the 11th

of its kind and looks set to be thebiggest yet. Corporates, schools

and organisations will have the op-portunity to host their own Shava-thon between 24 and 28 February,and Cansa Shavathon events willhappen at shopping centres acrossthe country on Saturday 1 March2014.When undergoing cancer thera-

py, a common side effect is hairloss. By shaving or spraying hair, itis almost a sign of solidarity - sho-wing support and visual empathyfor a cancer survivor. In addition tothe options of shaving or sprayingtheir hair, people also have the op-portunity to purchase a Cansa

Wrap for their hair (at a cost of R50per wrap) and to also donate theirponytail at Cansa Shavathon’sacross the country. Ponytail donati-ons received by Cansa are hand-made into wigs for cancer patientswho have lost their hair as a resultof their cancer treatment.According to the administrator

A 15 year-old girl was held at gunpointduring a recent robbery at her parents’home in Fochville.On Friday, 17 January the girl was

home, in Skool Street. At around14:30, one unknown black man andone unknown coloured man arrived atthe house, claiming they were there totake a look at the DSTV.“Once the girl noticed that the men

were disconnecting and moving appli-ances and wires, she approached andasked what they were doing,” said Con-stable Elsie Tshonte, Spokesperson ofthe Fochville SAPS. This is when themen pulled out firearms and pointedthem at the traumatized girl.The men carried stuff out of the hou-

A horrific murder in Fochville has leftpolice puzzled with little informationand few leads.On Wednesday morning, a passerby

using the bushy area next to the oldSun Valley Café, parallel to DanieTheron Street in Fochville, stumbledupon a terriblemurder scene andnoti-fied the police.What awaited police officers, howe-

ver, was unexpected. Upon arrival,members of the Fochville police foundthe burnt body of a woman.

“She was burnt beyond recogniti-on,” said Constable Elsie Tshonte,Spokesperson of the Fochville SAPS.“This has made it virtually impossi-

ble for our members to secure the wo-man’s identity.”Should the woman have had any

form of identification with her, thiswould also have been burnt to cindersin this horror crime.“The woman’s clothing was pulled

over her head before she was setalight, which may, or may not indicatethat she had possibly been raped befo-re her killer set her alight.”Furthermore, police could see by the

corpse that the woman’s entire headhad been bashed in with a hard object,so much so that there was not muchleft of her facial structure.“We strongly urge anyone who is

missing a female family member, whomay have been walking around thisarea, possibly from Greenspark, tonotify us,” Tshonte said.Anyone with information regarding

schools and institutes in Merafong issub-standard and not acceptable at all.Firstly - I am not referring to our

high-schoolswhich generally producedsuperb matric results. Again, congra-tulations to Callies with their 100 per-centmatric pass rate. This is an indica-tion, not only of hard working pupils,but committed, dedicated staff who ha-ve it in them to drive an entire groupof learners to great success.Wonderfontein worries me a bit, as

we watch its matric results fluctuate,this being a school which was the topschool in Carletonville back in the daywhen I was still a scholar. This is con-cerning and one can’t help but ask,“why is this town school, which shouldhave all the necessary resources, ran-king amongst the lowest pass rateschools in town?”Nevertheless, there are greater issu-

you get to a ‘reception area’ no longeraccessible through the front of the buil-ding where the “reception” signs stillhang. There some students sit in a cou-ple of rows of chairs in the middle ofthe room, others stand, some in whatlooks like it could be a queue andothers against the wall.I managed to convince the one wo-

man at the ‘reception desk’ workingwith this, to help me with the resultsmore quickly. I seriously did not havean entire day to stand and hope I’m inthe right queue and eventually get whatI had come for.

Primary on Wednesday and was superimpressed with the Grade 1 classesand teachers. If the four of you continueteaching with the passion you displa-yed onWednesday, especially you “Tea-cher Grace”, then those little ones defi-nitely have a head-start in life.As for the parents, I would strongly

urge you to closely watch the standardof “service delivery” by your children’seducational institutes and, if at all it isnotwhat you expect, and your child hasto settle for sub-standard, jump in,cause a scene, speak up and never justaccept.Children and students in Merafong,

deserve the same high-quality educati-on that those in other towns are recei-ving, end of story.

As hundreds of Grade 1 learners floc-ked to their new schools last Wednes-day, 15 January, excited about theirfirst day in ‘big school’, the day heldgreat disappointment for others.Various parents desiring English-

medium education for their children,enrolled them at Laerskool Fochville,one of the only two primary schools inFochville, last year.On Wednesday, however, a pleasant

welcoming was the last thing whichawaited the new English school goers.“When we arrived at the school with

our children, we went to the hall withthem, like all the other parents,” onemother, who wishes to remain anony-mous, told. “All the childrenwere assig-ned to their various classes, until noone but us, the black, English parentsand children, four white adults and anIndian man were left.”She explains how an Afrikaans wo-

man got up, greeted them and said, “Idon’t want us to traumatise the child-ren, but this school does not accommo-date English kids.” The woman, sus-pected to be a member of the school’sgoverning body, continued saying, “Wedon’t have space for your kids in ourschool.”

The mother who spoke to the Heraldwas one of the first to get up and speakon behalf of the angry parents. “We hadseveral meetings with the Departmentof Education in 2013,” she tells. “In Ju-ly, we had a meeting where the princi-pal, Mr Ben Habig himself attended. Atthis meeting Habig even told us wherewe could buy uniforms for our little on-es.”She says that most of the English

children were enrolled at LaerskoolFochville for English-medium educati-on in July 2013. “I told thiswoman thatthe very first day of school, after uni-forms and everything else has beenbought, is definitely not the time or pla-ce to tell us that the school doesn’t havespace or accommodate English pu-pils.” She alleges that the woman toldthe parents that their children are justgoing to be traumatised should theystay.“Next thing, an Indian man, Mr Ab-

dul, who was present during our mee-tings the previous year, stood up andhad more positive, but very confusingnews,” the mother tells. “No, do notworry, there is space for your childrenin this school,” he allegedly said. Shesays the woman and Mr Abdul startedquarrelling and then left the hall, conti-nuing their quarrel into the staffroom.

graafplaasMaandag het van die gras opplek-ke in

die tuin-gedeelte bykans so hoog soosvan die grafstene gestaan. In ‘n anderdeel van die begraafplaas, waar groten-deels Portugese inwoners begrawe is, isdie gras tussen grafstene op plekkemeer as ‘n meter hoog.Rommel het ook oral langs vullis-

blikke rondgelê. Volgens besoekerswat gereeld in die bgraafplaas kom, ishulle al gewoond daaraan om self vandié gemors op te tel. Intussen was ver-skeie van die bankies in die begraaf-plaas ook nie meer insó ‘n toestand dat ditbehoorlik benut kan

word nie. Van die bankies was flentersterwyl ander hol gesit is.Intussen het takke van ‘n struik wat

took a turn for the worst in December2009 when a big sinkhole fell betweenher house, No. 2572, at that of herneighbours. She was soon afterwardsinformed that the house was not safeto stay in anymore and that she had tomove.In 2011 her house was demolished.

An empty stand between other housenext to one of Khutsong’s main roadsis now the only testimony that her for-mer family home ever existed.Since this time, Selemela says that

she has been trying in vain to get a newhouse from the Merafong City LocalMunicipality. Although Selemela saysthat themunicipality has promised hera new house, she currently still has to

rent a house.“They sent me from pillar to post but

I still do not have a house,” she told theHerald on Monday.Selemela says that at one time, the

municipality did offer her a low-costhouse to stay in temporary.“But they said I might have to move

out of it any day. What would I have do-ne then? I do not have any other placeto go because all my children, who sta-yed with me before our house was de-molished, havemoved out of town. I al-so donot have other family inKhutsongor Carletonville where I can go andstay,” she said.According to Selemela, she once cor-

nered an official at a private eventabout her problems. The official toldher that if she had moved into the tem-porary house that was offered to her,officials would later have swopped hername with that of the original designa-ted owner, making the house perma-nently hers.“That did not sound right tome. How

could they have just taken someone el-se’s house and give it to me. It is notright. What wouldhave happened ifsomeone hadfound out aboutit?” she wonde-red.According to

Proposed Activity: Due to the greater assay laboratory area experiencinga large number of instability events, Sibanye Gold proposes to relocate theexisting assay laboratory which is currently located on Driefontein 113 IQto Kraalkop 147 IQ Portion, Gauteng Province. The proposed project will beundertaken within the existing mine property and the assay laboratory willbe relocated to an existing building within this property. This is essentially abrownfields project, that is, the relocation of the existing assay laboratory onalready impacted mine land and within an existing building, with an existingmining right area.

A disaster that took place at theWede-la YouthCentre towards the endof lastyear has left some community helpersstranded. TheHerald reported last ye-ar that thecentre, aneatbrickbuildingsituated between the swimming pooland a new fire station built by the mu-nicipality onlymonths ago, had guttedby a fire that broke out during the eve-ning of 4 December.

According to Ms Mammy Tawane,the Manager of Isolomzi Home BasedCare, which was one of the organisati-ons housed in the centre, they are indire straits after the fire.

Tawane explained that the centrehad originally been owned by Anglo-Gold Ashanti, who later gave it to theMerafongCity LocalMunicipality to beused by the community ofWedela. Alt-houghmuch damage was also done tothe centre during a previous fire on 24August last year, the fire in Decemberdid the most damage.

While it was still able to operate inthe centre, members of Isolomzi Ho-me Based Care were feeding orphansthat came to the centre every day. Theyalso assisted the youngsters with their

homework. Support groups for thosewho are HIV positive made use of thecentre once a week while other pa-tients as well as the disabled. “The ca-re-givers who used to work there donot evenget a stipendas theywork justfor the sake of the community,” Tawa-ne indicated, and added that the orga-nisation have been so sustainable byitself that it had never received moneyfrom the Government.

Despite all this hardwork, the orga-nisation is now facing an uncertain fu-ture because of the fire at the centre.Tawane also alleged that certain peo-ple within the municipality do notwant it back at the centre.

“We are asking for our MerafongMayorMaphefo Letsie and theDistrictMayorMt Nawa to help us. NtateMan-dela said theremust be a better life forall. Theymust take it from there,” saysTawane.

“The Municipality has been in con-tactwith the affected group through itsHealthandSocialDevelopmentOffice.Measures to assist are being investiga-ted and will be communicated to theaffected group in due course,” amuni-cipal spokesman responded toquesti-ons about the matter.

Last Friday evening the top matricachievers of 2013 together with the topperforming teacherswere spoilt duringan event held for them by the Mayor.

The gala dinner for these stars whohave made the area proud, organisedby the ExecutiveMayor of theMerafongCity Local Municipality, Ms MaphefoMogale-Letsie, has become an annualevent on the calender. Except for an

evening to relax before taking on theirtertiary or working careers, the topachievers also walked off with burs-aries, money and other rewards.

In her address the Mayor noted thatthemunicipality has again, through theyouth coordinator’s office, embarkedon various programmes such as visitsto schools after the official release ofthe matric results to congratulateachievers and to motivate poor perfor-ming local schools. Before the matric

examinations the municipality alsoheld a special prayer day. The munici-pality has also conducted a cleaningcampaign to make local schools readyfor the first day of school and donatedschool uniforms as well as printersand photocopyingmachines to schoolsin need of such equipment.

The municipality also offered regi-stration fees to 269 learners and will,in future, coordinate a student supportprogramme together with mining hou-ses. It also sponsored 120 orphansfrom schools across Merafong R2 500each for them to look as beautiful asother childrenduring theirmatric fare-well. A holiday programme with gamesat some local schools was also organi-sed.

“We cannot understate the importan-ce of our communities taking a collecti-ve responsibility to ensure that qualityeducation takes place in all our schools– from Khutsong to Fochville. It ismembers of the community who mustspeak up when they see learners loite-ring around during school hours, it ismembers of the community whoshould donate their time and resour-ces to ensure that under-achieving

schools improve their performance.For it iswhenwe all share this huge res-ponsibility that we can continue gettingthese improvements in our education.These results are proof that we aregoing in the right direction,” the Mayortold the crowd.

The best performing teachers whoreceived awards andmoney wereMsMVan Eeden of Callies for Physical Schi-ence, Mr D Visser of CJ for Accountingand Mrs Anel Denner of HoërskoolFochville forMathematics. The Johannesburg Skydiving Club (JSC) inCarletonville played witness to a remarkableevent last Sunday when the oldest ever personin the country to skydive did so at the club.On this day, Billy Hawes, a visitor from the

United Kingdom, made a tandem jump. Whatmade this remarkable is that Hawes is 93 yearsold and has until recently had a lifestyle very dif-ferent from what he did last weekend.According to his nephew, Colin Robinson, Ha-

wes, who resides in Gorse Lane Tiptree, Essex,in the United Kingdom has been house boundfor over four years. He had not been able to walkeight metres and the only way that he was ableto get around was by wheelchair.On the passing of his wife, Hilda, who died

eightmonths ago, and being alone and in despe-ration to keep active, he used a Zimmer frameto stand and attempted to exercise by walkingon the spot and lifting his legs up to his waist.He carried on doing this until he felt he could

walk a little on his own.“He then called and said hewould like to come

visit with us here in Johannesburg and true tohis word he arrived unaccompanied on the 8thNovember2013,where in the sunhehas carriedon exercising in our gardens.“Then out of the blue he said he would like

to attempt a tandem skydive,” tells Robinson.After contacting Chris Grosch, the tandem

master, and Eugene Potgieter, the JSC’s Chair-man and camera man, it was arranged that Ha-wes would make his tandem jump on Sonday,19 January at 09:40. At the planned time, hegot into the plane with Grosch and the two jum-ped out at 11 000 feet.

The Robinsons from Carletonville were this week stillkeeping the area’s name high in the Cape to Rio yachtrace.The family, consisting of father Michael, a local busi-

ness-man, mother Gillian, a teacher, and children Ka-thryn (28), Ricky (26), Brennan (25), Ryan (16) and Mi-chaela Mae (13), has again been taking part in the yachtCiao Bella, with which they came second in the race in2011.The Ciao Bella was one of 36 yachts from eight coun-

tries which took off from Cape Town harbour on Satur-day, 4 January. Although most of the yachts were expec-ted to reach Rio de Janeiro by 21 January after comple-ting the 3 600 mile race, only three, the Maserati, theScarlet Runner and the Explora had already reachedtheir destination on this date. According to the interimresults theMaserati was first, the Scarlet Runner secondand the Explora seventh according to their handicap.On Tuesday, the 17th day of the race, the Ciao Bella

was still in the fifthplace, a positionwhich theRobinsonshad held for most of the race.Except for the heavy storm on the first day of the race,

yachts seem to have been struggling in light breezes,which had not been enough to gather enough speed toreach the finishing time faster. Despite this, the Robin-sons were cheerful as usual despite many challenges ofthe South Atlantic crossing.On Sunday, 19 January, Kathryn wrote “One of the

largest challenges of doing an ocean crossing has to dealwith the broken sleep patterns; with the maximumamount of sleep you get is four hours at any point in time.This has led us to relearn the art of a mid-afternoon po-wernap: something that is far better practiced amongstthe students on board.”The Robinsons, who are again keeping Carletonville's name high on the open seas.
