A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENTAs the mother of a two and a half year old,
“Why” is a question that I hear quite often.
While I may not know the answers to all of
her "whys", I can answer with certainty and
conviction “Why the Junior League of
Hampton Roads?”
Since 1956, The Junior League of Hampton
Roads has been committed to promoting
voluntarism, developing the potential of
women, and improving communities
through the effective action and leadership
of trained volunteers.
Because of the JLHR, a mother who is
otherwise unable to afford it is able to get
her GED.
Because of the JLHR, a teen who has very few
positive role models is able to see in us an
example of strong women and is inspired.
Because of the JLHR, a child’s love of reading
is renewed or discovered for the first time.
Because of the JLHR, an abused woman and
her child are welcomed into their own, safe
home with dignity with new bedding and
toiletries of their own.
The Junior League of Hampton Roads
embraces diverse perspectives, builds
partnerships and strives to improve our local
communities. Whether you are a financial
sponsor, a community partner, or are
considering membership, we thank you for
your support.
I am truly honored to spend this year as your
President, and to serve with such an amazing
group of woman who all share the same goal
of building better communities.

ABOUT JLHRThe Junior League of Hampton Roads, Inc. is an organization of
women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the
potential of women, and improving communities through the
effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose
is exclusively educational and charitable.
Our initiative is a program designed to empower women who are
confronting economic uncertainty and adversity. The initiative’s
mission is to fill gaps in education and services for women and
children, and to empower them to improve their lives and those
of future generations.
In an effort to fulfill this mission, we provide regular training to
our members to help them better serve the community. We also
regularly conduct fundraising to meet the needs of local
organizations that serve women and children.

Publications
The Publications Committee had over $12,000 in sales this year! Our line-up of cookbooks were put to great use as Leaguers entered into friendly competition during each General Membership Meeting. Aptly named the "Iron Leaguer", the competition involves two Leaguers, tasked with cooking a dish from one of the cookbooks (selected by Committee Co-Chairs Tracey Herrin and Rebecca De Rosier). Meeting attendees had the opportunity to sample the recipes and vote for a winner. The winner then received the honor of housing the beloved JLHR pineapple as a trophy.
Mistletoe Market
The JLHR held its second Mistletoe Market in November, 2017! Chaired by Valia Maloney and Courtney Taylor, the Market was held outside of Tradition Brewery in Newport News City Center. Featuring an array of vendors, live music, and cookies from JLHR cookbooks, the event was a success - raising over $2,000!

Derby: Race For a Cause
New this year was the first ever JLHR Derby Party! Tracey Herrin and Rebecca De Rosier served as chairs for the event, which was held at the Warwick Yacht and County Club in Newport News in May 2018. Attendees dressed in cocktail attire and wore the traditional Derby hats and bow ties, while enjoying heavy hors d’oeurves, drinks photo station, hat and bow tie contests, a silent auction, and live streaming of the race and pre-coverage broadcast. Special guests included employees and their guests from the event’s presenting sponsor: Virginia Health Services (VHS). VHS is locally owned and has operated for over 50 years in Hampton Roads and surrounding communities. VHS offers an array of services beginning with independent retirement living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, rehabilitation, and many more at seven facilities. VHS has been a generous supporter and sponsor to the JLHR for many years, and we thank them for their donations and appreciate their continued partnership. This event raised $2,000 that will support JLHR’s community impact mission to help women and children in the Hampton Roads area.
Touch A Truck
The JLHR held its 7th Annual Touch A Truck (TAT) in April, 2018 at the Peninsula Town Center in Hampton. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the TAT Committee, Chaired by Kristen Claire, the event raised over $16,000! The day kicked off with a VIP hour from 9am-10am, and continued through 3pm, offering fun for the whole family. Featuring a wide variety of trucks, emergency vehicles, tractor-trailers, and more - children were encouraged to climb, discover, and explore the vehicles, as well as learn about the people who build, protect, and serve the Hampton Roads community. The event also featured food vendors, activities, and special performances.

R.E.A.C.H. was honored at our annual May Dinner Celebration at Williamsburg Winery. REACH received $2,750,
which will go towards their Moonbeams and Sweet Dreams initiative. This initiative will provide board books to low-income
families in downtown Newport News, as well as training to parents on early literacy strategies, such as picture walking.
NEW MEMBER PROJECT
Early Literacy
Storytelling Workshop
Add a little bit of body text
This spring, the Junior League of Hampton Roads New Member Class of 2017-2018 chose early childhood literacy in the Hampton Roads as the focus of their New Member project. The project had two focuses the first was a partnership with SMART beginnings to host a storytelling workshop for daycare providers in the area and the second was promoting the importance of early childhood literacy to the community. Through their fundraising efforts, the New Members raised enough money to create supply boxes for the storytelling workshop participants. Each supply box was equipped with three new children’s books and the supplies needed to create fun, visual depictions of the stories for the students. Along with the supply boxes, each daycare provider received a new felt board and felt pieces to implement during story time in their classroom. The New Member class also created an Early Childhood Literacy Bookmark with tips and recommendations on how caregivers can implement literacy skills at home. The New Members distributed 300 bookmarks to parents/caregivers during the annual JLHR Touch-A- Truck event!
