RAKU POTTERY Get ready for some smoke and fire! Raku is an exciting, yet unpredictable way to fire pottery. This form of pottery is a process where ceramic ware is removed from a kiln while it is red hot, and placed into easily combustible materials greatly reducing the amount of oxygen around the pot. This gives glazed pots a fantastic variety of colors Spend 3 weeks making creations, one week to glaze, then poof! – fire in an outdoor kiln on Saturday, October 16, to get extraordinary pieces unobtainable from a regular kiln firing. Less than 5 skaters when temperatures are between 0 and 15 degrees below zeroAnyone using skating rinks (Lincoln and Manor) for hockey or pleasure skating should be aware of the system used for signaling of opened and closed warming houses and rinks.

INFORMATION ON WINTER/SPRING PROGRAMSInformation on Winter/Spring programs will be available in the Winter/Spring Brochure to be distributed Saturday, January 1, 2022, through the Aberdeen American News. MELGAARD PARK SKATE PARK The Melgaard Skate Park opened in July of 2000 and has been a home to Aberdeen’s action and wheel sports communities for nearly 20 years. However, after 20 years of continuous operation, it’s time to revitalize the space by replacing the older wood structures with some updated features. These new features will improve the parks overall “skateability,” giving novice, intermediate and advanced users new riding surfaces that suit their specific skillsets, as well as improving the “flow” or connectivity between features, which will help maximize the use of space. The American Ramp Company of Joplin, Missouri assisted us in updating the skate park master plan. The new ramps will be from their pro-series, which feature a 20-year warranty, galvanized steel framework, MaxGrip Steel surfaces, and fastener free riding surfaces. This means that not only will these ramps be longer lasting and virtually maintenance free, but they will be safer for skaters as well. For more information about ramp sponsorship, memorial opportunities, or to make a donation, call the Aberdeen Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department at 626-7015.

PLANT TREESFall and winter is a good time to start thinking about the 2022 spring tree planting season. The City Forestry department can plant the trees for you at no cost. For questions, call City Forester, Aaron Kiesz at 626-7015

HELP KEEPthe STORYBOOK LANDMAGIC ALIVEStorybook Land/Wylie Park Gift Fund

A HISTORY OF GENEROSITYStorybook Land and Wylie Park have become major attractions for our region as a result of the generous support of many individuals, businesses and organizations. The development of Storybook Land and the Land of Oz in particular would not have been possible without the generosity of the public.

Over the years, the Aberdeen Sertoma Club, in partnership with the Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has served as the fundraising arm for the continued development and operation of Storybook Land and Wylie Park. Storybook Land was established in 1977 and since that time many major projects have been completed including the Castle, Storybook Land Train, Oz Carousel, Wizard’s Balloon Ride and the Visitor Center.

The Sertoma Club and Park and Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department plan to continue fundraising efforts to improve and expand the attractions and recreational opportunities at Storybook Land and Wylie Park.

OUR MISSIONThe Sertoma Club and Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department engage in fundraising activities designed to improve and expand the many attractions and programs which are available at Storybook Land and Wylie Park which enhances the quality of life for our residents and visitors to Aberdeen.

By working together we can accomplish the many improvement projects under consideration at Storybook Land and Wylie Park and can improve and expand the recreational resources available in our community and bridge the gap between the growing needs and limited financial resources.
