FROM FR. QUINT

This week we enter the home stretch of Advent. Hopefully we can keep

the spirit of longing and waiting, of being alert and prepared. Take time to

pray before an image of the Nativity and beg our Lord to bestow light and

peace upon the world.

On behalf of the priests and cluster staff Merry Christmas! Thank you

for the ways in which you offer kindness and support. Hopefully you will

enjoy time with family, renewing and deepening relationships.

We arranged the schedule of Christmas Masses this year in a manner

that allows for us three priests to cover all of them. Even so, we are

grateful to Fr. Ries who will celebrate the 8:30 am Mass on Christmas

Day at St. Boniface. God has been good to us through the ministry of Frs.

Ries and Vorwald.

The solemnity of the Nativity of our Lord is a holy day of obligation.

We’ll have Masses on Friday night and Saturday morning. Then we’ll

move right along into the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and

Joseph. While some pastors decided to omit Masses on Saturday night,

we priests decided it was important to offer our usual weekend Mass

schedule, so that we can more readily fulfill our Sunday obligation. I’m

grateful to our associate pastors for their generosity. Worshipping at

Mass Saturday evening December 25 does not fulfill the obligation to

attend Mass for both Christmas and Sunday December 26 (Feast of the

Holy Family). The faithful are to worship at two Masses.

O :

The Ember Days were this past week. Looks like January will be es-

pecially mild!

As we come to the end of the calendar year, it is a very important

time for our parishes to gain ground financially in meeting our budget-

ed incomes. Thanks for your sacrificial giving.

Thanks for picking up your budget envelopes. Feel free to pick up

those of relatives, friends, neighbors, coworkers and deliver them

too.

Remember that the churches are usually filled with people at the 4

pm Christmas Eve Masses. You might consider worshipping at one of

the other Mass times.

All of the Christmas Masses from the basilica will be live streamed.

Find the links to each Mass on the cluster website.

The dusting project at the basilica has now been completed.Great to

see the altars and statues shine again. Thanks to the volunteers who

keep the lower levels looking great as well.On Monday, they began

dusting the altars and statues at St. Paul Worthington.

T N ~ I received a tremendous donation from

the members of the Spires of Faith community, and I extend my

sincere gratitude to each of you who cared so much to help out this

Christmas season and beyond. Please be assured I take the respon-

sibility of being a good steward of the cash you donate to our local toys

for the needy program very seriously. Each of you, in some way, touch

a life that is in need of extra love, care, and concern throughout the

entire year. I am very blessed to receive this donation and I ask the

ChristChild to bless each of you in return for your stewardship.

Sincerely, Miriam Eick

K C T R D ~ The Knights of Columbus Coun-

cil 1734 recently held its annual Person with Intellectual Disabilities

Drive (Tootsie Roll Drive). Ninety percent of the proceeds are dis-

persed locally. Ten percent goes to the Iowa Knights of Columbus for

statewide projects for persons with intellectual disabilities. Locally,

checks of $1250 were given to Dyersville Progress, Western Dubuque

High School Transitions Program and the Dyersville Progress Special

Olympics Team. Thank you for your support!

S ~ Lock your cars while at church. At this time of year

thieves look for purses and other valuables even during Masses.

H D ~ On January 1st we celebrate the Motherhood of Mary,

a holy day. Although it is not obligatory to worship at Mass because it

falls on a Saturday this year, God would be glorified by your offering of

time.

A M ~ On Monday, December 27, Mass will be cel-

ebrated at the basilica at 2 pm to especially accommodate seniors

from our cluster parishes who may not be able to get out on Christ-

mas. All are welcome though! Anointing of the Sick also will be of-

fered. Afterward we’ll have a social in the lower level of the basilica.

N A 12/20, 12/24 12/31 ~ We will not have ad-

oration at the basilica on Monday, December 20, Friday, December 24

or Friday, December 31.

C O C ~ Our cluster offices will be closed

Friday, December 24 through Monday, December 27. Offices will open

again at 8:00 am on Tuesday, December 28.

I ~ Some of us suffer from asthma and other ailments which

make the use of incense at Mass painful and harmful. Moving forward,

incense will not be used at the 7 am Christmas morning Mass and at

the 7 am Masses at the basilica on Sundays.

We extend our sympathy and prayers

to the family of: Brian White

C- B4 ~ Thursday, Dec.23 January 2.

Spires of Faith Parishes

E7 90 ~ For any Catholic man looking to deepen

their faith we are starting an Exodus 90 group January

17th. It is a time of 90 days before Easter of practicing self

denial and prayer, with a fraternity of men to hold each

other accountable to grow as Catholic men in freedom. If

you are interested or have any questions, please contact

Fr Tyler.

B4 C0 ~ There is a wealth of Catholic literature

that can help us to look deeply into our Faith. If you love

reading, the Cluster has a book club that meets regularly

to discuss great Catholic literature together! Our next

book will be A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller

Jr., a story of a monastery in the Southwest US dedicated

to preserving knowledgeafter a terrible disaster, but will

humanity make the same mistake of trying to play God as

the world recovers? A SciFi classic! Contact Fr Tyler if

you are interested or with questions. We will begin this

book in January.

P) W) ~ The Catholic parish com-

munity welcomes couples to celebrate the sacrament of

Matrimony. A sacramental marriage pours forth the grace

of God upon the couple so they may grow in mutual

respect and love. Purposefully, they practice being the

presence of Christ to one another in their love. Call the

cluster office to speak with a priest or deacon about prep-

aration.

C Y ~ Historically, our parishioners have

offered extraordinary generosity to the parishes in

December. Contributions of mandatory IRA distributions,

grain, livestock, stocks/bonds and even real estate can be

especially advantageous to donors. Hopefully as we all

give sacrificially, we will meet our budgeted income.

H H ~ All are welcome to St. Joseph the

Worker parish in Dubuque (the round church near high-

way 20 where Fr. Jim Goerend is now the pastor) for a

Holy Hour for vocations on Wednesday, January 12 at 7

pm. A seminarian will give a witness talk as part of the

worship.
