Efficiency and effectiveness of validation: the goal of the electromechanicalindustryThe development of embedded systems is an essential activity in industrial sector. More than 90% of all the produced electronic devices are used in embedded systems. Validation of these systems is more complex than validation of traditional software systems due to, from one side, the technical features of integrated systems, and, on the other hand, to the particular requirements realized on this kind of systems: functional and temporal requirements. Moreover, these systems, several times are safety–relevant.

The relevance of costs, resulting from errors during life-cycle of embedded systems, high quality requirements are imposed.

Validation is the most important quality assurance measure for these kind of systems. Typically, about 50% of the total development effort and budget is spent in testing and validation. Definition and design of testing environment is essential to a good test quality because it defines the type and scope of the same test. The same test methodology influences, in a significant way, the validation quality, and then the final product, ant it shall meet the time-to-market constraint for every device: the possibility to short the technical delivery time for the embedded system, reducing cost and increasing validation reliability, is an actual necessity.

We offerAltran can rely on the expertise of experts, able to manage a

process of structured test and optimize time, capitalizing on best

practices and changing testing strategies to improve the service

offered.

The strength of Altran is the flexibility in the definition of

testing process and of the involved technologies, so the testing

methodologies meet specific customer needs, differentiated

according to the complexity level. Furthermore, the increased

reliability and rapidity of the process of validation is obtained by

three factors:

•Establishing a process of ad-hoc test for the application

•Use of HW / SW high-tech platforms

•Development of automated test suites to continuous improvement

in the testing process.

Altran can offer different solutions, starting from methodology

support and definition, till test execution.

For the former, Altran is able to:

- Develop a new test methodology, consisting in the definition of

the test specifications, according to a precise formalism, and of

tool for the requirements’ tracking.

- Choose and integrate the most suitable solution for the Customer,

according to Device Under Test (DUT), guaranteeing the best

Benefits/costs ratio,

- Use common tools (e.g. AutomationDesk® by dSPACE) or a

proprietary Automation Suite, able to interface with all needed tools

during validation, for automatic test execution till report generation.

For the latter, different facilities are currently available:

- HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) benches.

The best way to meet time-to-market reduction constraints, is to

use HIL benches, because it allows to anticipate the validation phase

when the final application is not yet available. Moreover, it shorts

the validation time and so the technical delivery, thanks to the fully

automatization of the tests. Altran expertise are focused on dSPACE,

OPAL-RT, National Instruments and ETAS platforms. Four laboratories,

displaced in Turin and Naples, are currently equipped with five HIL

benches:

- Test benches.

When the DUT doesn’t require a complex simulation environment, the

usage of HIL benches could be less efficient. In these cases specific

test benches are realized customized for the DUT.

For all the activities the most used tools are:

• INCA, Helios (Calibration and SW monitoring)

• CANalyzer, CANoe, BUS MASTER, and related HW interface (CAN and

LIN network monitoring and simulation)

• Dianalyzer, WinUDS, CDA (Diagnostic)

Success Stories Engine Control validation on HIL

benches for diesel and gasoline applications

Context & Objectives:The largest Italian engines supplier requested support in the definition and execution of the following tests for different worldwide OEMs on HIL benches:. Functional Testing of engine control system . Diagnosis validation according to OEM Norms . Integration test and plant simulation

Results:The methodology adopted by Altran with automatic execution of tests guaranteed high quality of the tests and allowed to short the delivery time of test reports.configuration.

Moreover, Altran can offer:

• Acoustic Laboratory

A soundproof room for acoustic tests, able to house a vehicle,

equipped with Acquisition System and Signal generation (PXI-1033,

PXI-4461), a Kit Microphone GRAS 46AE and a Bench Power Supply

0-16V/0-40A. Following tests are performed:

- Measurement of the phase

- Break-in Speakers

- Spectral Uniformity

- Music Articulation Test

- Punch Test

- Signal to Noise and Distortion Test

- Maximum Output Level

- Maximum Sound Pressure Level (SPL)

- Spurious Vibrations

- Generic Subjective Tests

• Vehicle Test Laboratory

Opened in Turin a new Testing Center, prepared to test and

validate powertrain systems. A large site with several locations able

to house different vehicles, also middle size vehicles, for functional

and diagnostic tests. The facility allows engine tests directly on

vehicle environment:

- 6 locations for static tests

- 1 location with 2WD Braked Power Dynamometer bench for

dynamic tests

Each location is equipped with a dedicated suction system for the

exhaust gases. Moreover, equipment for small electrical/mechanical

interventions on vehicle is present.

Demonstrated competences, high quality of deliverables and

availability of different solution/facilities, made it feasible the

growth of the number of Turnkey projects, and in the last years

about the 90% of validation activity, in charge of Altran, on

powertrain systems for automotive application are completely TK.

Engine Control validation on vehicle for diesel applications

Context & Objective:The largest Italian engines supplier requested support in the definition and execution of the functional and diagnostic tests for different worldwide OEMs on vehicle (Fiat Alfa MiTo, 500L0, Doblò, Giulietta, Grande Punto, Ducato Europe and America, Jeep,…)

Results:The expertises of Altran on vehicle testing, together with the availability of a Vehicle Test Laboratory, guaranteed delivery time compliant with planning also during critical activity periods.
