The available Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) numbers are included in the catalogand were current as of 2/6/14, as reported by the American Angus Association or Amer-ican Simmental Association. EPDs are predictions of how future progeny are expectedto perform in each of the traits listed, as compared to the progeny of a breed averagebull. Interim EPD is indicated by an “I” to the left of the plus or minus sign precedingthe EPD. Angus interim EPDs are calculated on animals on which AHIR records havebeen processed between National Cattle Evaluations, conducted twice per year. InterimEPDs are updated in the next National Cattle Evaluation, provided all edit checks are met.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassistedbirths, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predictsthe average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bredto first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birthweight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to trans-mit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight (YW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmityearling growth compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering abil-ity as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words,it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the differencein transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

CARCASS EPDs:Breed Average for Non-parent Angus Bulls: MARB +.46, RE +.42Angus Carcass EPDs are calculated from an integrated analysis of the Angus Herd Im-provement Records (AHIR®) carcass and ultrasound phenotypic databases. The genet-ic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, ribeyearea and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed onan age-constant basis. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of eachsire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in thedatabase, if randomly mated and the calves are exposed to the same environment. In-cluded in this catalog are $Values for Weaned Calf and Beef.

Weaned Calf Value: The expected average difference in future progeny performance forpreweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with dif-ferences in birth weight, weaning weight, milk and mature cow size.

Livestock evaluation and expected progeny difference (EPDs) have now evolvedto include the use of DNA as the most predictable, accurate information to assessthe actual merit for quality and production of an individual animal. Today these areknown as genomic-enhanced EPDs, or GE-EPDs.

Zoetis (formerly Pfizer Animal Health) has formed a partnership with Angus Ge-netics, Inc. (AGI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Angus Association(AAA), in which AGI is the exclusive distributor of High-Density 50K (HD 50K) forAngus tests. This partnership can provide breeders access to genomic-enhancedexpected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) and indexes powered by the HD 50K forAngus platform. GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K for Angus are the most dependableand predictable option in genetic evaluation for registered or recorded black Anguscattle in the United States.• Combines the industry-leading American Angus Association National Cattle Eval-uation EPDs with the industry’s first and only 54,000-marker panel.

Traits with HD 50K genomic predictions:

What are HD 50K percentile ranks?

• Percentile ranks are associated with each animal’s molecular breeding valuesand are benchmarked against a database of nearly 20,000 HD 50K-tested Angusanimals.

• The percentile ranks range from 1 to 100, with lower values indicating a morefavorable ranking for the trait.

For the Zoetis HD 50K for Angus percentile rankings, a lower value indicates amore favorable ranking for the trait. For example, a smaller numeric percentileranking for HD 50K results in birth weight and carcass fat indicates lighter calvesand leaner carcasses as the expectation.

Angus GE-EPDs powered by High-Density 50K (HD 50K) from Zoetis Animal Ge-netics have been proven to show a significant increase in accuracy and depend-ability. Depending on the trait, the information from HD 50K may provide as muchpredictive effect on an individual’s EPD as an animal with up to 22 progenyrecords.

This means that just one HD 50K DNA test, when applied to EPD calculations byAGI, provides as much genetic information as more than a lifetime of productionfrom a typical cow, all before that individual is even weaned.

As there are billions of possible combinations of DNA in even full siblings, thereare significant differences in quality and production of full brothers and even flushmates. GE-EPDs are the most reliable way to describe those differences. We nowhave the ability to more objectively compare animals that come from differentmanagement, environments or small contemporary groups.

How does this technology advancement affect you and your EPDs?

Genomic results are a way to enhance our current selection tools, to achieve moreaccuracy on predictions for younger animals and to characterize genetics for traitswhere it’s extremely difficult to measure the phenotype.GE-EPDs combine pedigree information and performance data from the animal,its relatives and progeny with HD 50K genomic information. These EPDs are ex-pressed in units of the trait and more dependably rank animals for less risky andmore profitable selection decisions. GE-EPDs should be considered the selectiontool of choice.
