Why BTV?Many folks flying through BTV wonder about the airport’s three-letter location identifier. Vermont’s postal code is VT, so why isn’t it BVT? That’s especially baffling, as BVT isn’t already used by another airport.

Here’s a little history. Airport codes arose in the 1930s. The early ones simply copied the two-letter designations used by the National Weather Service, which typically sets up weather-data stations at airfields.

But as commercial aviation expanded, the federal government switched to the three-letter system, which offered thousands more com-binations. Some airports simply added an X to their original two-letter

abbreviations, and those codes stuck. Hence LAX (Los An-geles International) and PDX (Portland International).

Today, many of the three-letter codes still make sense. They include Boston (BOS), Atlanta (ATL) and Salt Lake City (SLC). Others, such as Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD), are puzzling

until you learn the airport’s history: Prior to 1949, O’Hare was named Orchard Field.

By all reports, Burlington International’s three-letter code has always been BTV — leaving the placement of the “V” a mystery. But the moniker is far preferable to that of the Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa (SUX), Brazil’s Poços de Caldas Airport (POO), Perm International Airport in Russia (PEE) or Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri (BUM).

Burlingtonians have come to embrace the slightly offbeat BTV ab-breviation, adopting it as a fitting nickname and Twitter hashtag for their quirky hometown.

Pourquoi BTV?Bien des voyageurs qui passent par BTV s’interrogent sur la significa-tion de cet indicatif à trois lettres. Au Vermont, le code postal est VT… alors pourquoi ne dit-on pas BVT? Il y a lieu de se poser la question, puisqu’aucun autre aéroport n’utilise le sigle BVT.

Un peu d’histoire... C’est dans les années 1930 que les indicatifs d’aéroport ont vu le jour. À l’origine, il s’agissait des mêmes sigles à deux lettres que ceux du National Weather Service, qui exploitait des postes météorologiques sur les terrains d’aviation.

Mais avec l’essor de l’aviation commerciale, le gouvernement fédéral est passé au système à trois lettres, qui offrait beaucoup plus de combinaisons. Certains aéroports ont simplement greffé un X à leur sigle initial à deux lettres, et ces codes leur sont restés. D’où les indicatifs LAX (aéroport international de Los Angeles) et PDX (aéroport international de Portland).

Why Is Burlington Often Abbreviated as BTV?

Recently, a reader asked Seven Days why Burlington is often referred to as BTV in offi-cial announcements and names of community programs, such as planBTV, the Community

and Economic Development Office’s long-term plan-ning and revitalization effort.

“Is this a result of BTV’s use as Burlington International’s airport code, or was BTV in use before that?” the query read. “And why not BVT?” WTF?

First, the easy part. The Queen City’s unofficial moniker does derive from the airport’s three-letter location identifier, assigned years ago by the Federal Aviation Administration. To be precise, every publicly accessible airport in the world has a four-character alphanumeric identifier called its International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, airport code. However, because all U.S. civilian ICAO airport codes start with the letter K, that letter is generally left off your board-ing pass and baggage-claim tickets.

So why was Burlington International, Vermont’s largest and busiest airport (which is owned by the City of Burlington but located in South Burlington), as-signed the code BTV and not BVT, as logic would sug-gest? This is especially puzzling, as BVT isn’t already used by another airport. Suffice it to say, anyone look-ing for logic in a bureaucratic decision should brace for an arduous search — and in this case, a fruitless one.

Here’s a little history. According to an oft-cited ar-ticle by pilot Dave English published in the December

1994 issue of Air Line Pilot magazine, airport codes first arose in the 1930s. The early ones simply copied the two-letter designations used by the National Weather Service, which typically sets up weather-data stations at airfields.

But as commercial aviation expanded in the 1930s, the federal government switched to the three-letter system, which offered thousands more possible com-binations. To prevent confusion with the old, two-letter monikers, some airports simply added an X to their original two-letter abbreviations, and those codes stuck. Hence LAX (Los Angeles International), PDX (Portland International) and PHX (Phoenix International).

Today, many of the three-letter codes still make sense. They include Boston (BOS), Atlanta (ATL), DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth), Salt Lake City (SLC), New York’s LaGuardia (LGA) and Miami International (MIA). Others, such as Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD), are puzzling until you learn the airport’s history: Prior to 1949, O’Hare was named Orchard Field. A similar explana-tion underlies Orlando, Fla.’s airport, MCO, which was McCoy Air Force Base until it was converted to civilian use.

By all reports, Burlington International’s three-let-ter code has always been BTV — leaving the placement of “V” a mystery. But what explains some of the three-letter location identifiers at Vermont’s other publicly accessible airports? Jim Thompson, the state aviation

operations manager for Vermont’s 10 state-owned air-ports, can only wish us good luck trying to suss out an explanation.

Some of Vermont’s small airport codes are logical, including the Morrisville-Stowe State Airport (MVL), the Franklin County State Airport in Highgate (FSO), and Caledonia County Airport in Lyndnville (CDA).

But what’s the deal with the Newport State Airport (EFK), Middlebury State Airport (6B0) or the William H. Morse State Airport in Bennington (DDH)? The last one might as well stand for “Dunno. Don’t have a clue.”

“I don’t know why they came about that way,” Thompson admits. “There’s really no rhyme or reason behind how [FAA officials] do these things.”

Besides BTV, the Southern Vermont Regional Airport in Rutland is the state’s only other airfield of-fering commercial passenger service — three flights daily to Boston. While its three-letter code — RUT — makes sense, it isn’t doing much to bolster that city’s once-rough-and-tumble public image. City planners aren’t likely to unveil a “planRUT” any time soon.

And don’t even think about trying to alter a city’s three-letter airport code to something more logical, flattering or tourism-friendly.

“At one point we petitioned the FAA to change Newport’s code to NEK, for Northeast Kingdom. They basically said no,” says Thompson, pointing out that the designator wasn’t even in use. “But we tried.”

Things could be worse for Rutland. Its moniker is far preferable to that of the Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa (SUX), Brazil’s Poços de Caldas Airport (POO), Perm International Airport in Russia (PEE) or Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri (BUM).

Like Vermont’s 802 area code, Burlington’s BTV ab-breviation has taken on an identity all its own. As former Seven Days employee Tyler Machado reported back in 2011, members of Burlington’s Twitterati got into a 140-character snit with state-run television stations in Bahrain, Botswana and other countries that start with the letter B when those parties usurped the Twitter hashtag #BTV. Then, about a year later, Burlington’s #BTV got hijacked (hashjacked?) by Bloomberg TV’s social-media crew, causing much noise, confusion and gnashing of tweets. Twitter-savvy Rutlanders, for their part, should tread lightly with the #RUT moniker for fear of pissing off deer, moose and elk hunters who cur-rently use the #RUT hashtag.

If Rutlanders ever get serious about asking the FAA to drop RUT for something more uplifting, they should keep in mind that the RVT code is already taken — by Ravensthorpe Airport in Australia. However, RVG — for Rut Vegas! — is still up for grabs. m

A s the 13th largest lake in the U.S., Lake Champlain truly shines in the summertime. Its sparkling blue waters can accommodate just about everyone who wants to dive in.

No, really: If every single Vermonter — about 626,000 resi-dents — were to jump into Lake Champlain at once, the level of the lake would rise a scant 3.68 micrometers.

So if you’re summering in Vermont, there’s no excuse not to explore this beautiful body of water. From swimming to snorkeling to sailing, there are many ways to get your feet wet. Read on for a sampling. Bon voyage!

SWIMMINGThe simplest way to commune with Lake Champlain is just to don a swimsuit and jump in. But first, you’ll need to know where to go.

This isn’t Florida, but the Burlington area has several hot spots for beachcombers. South Burlington’s Red Rocks Park is known for its wooded paths and dramatic cliffs but is also home to a waterfront with excellent views.

Close to downtown is Oakledge Park, a favorite place for swimming, picnicking, barbecuing and people watching. North of downtown, swimmers can jump in the lake at Leddy Park, which is often less crowded than other city beaches. If the sun’s too strong, cool off inside Leddy’s ice-skating arena.

The biggest of Burlington’s beaches is 45-acre North Beach, a popular spot among campers, RV owners and daytrippers. Right on the sand, the Beach House restaurant serves up everything from gyros to hot dogs to curries. No wonder this sandy strip is always packed; the lakeside location is hard to beat.

SNORKELING & SCUBA DIVINGFor underwater fun, head to Burlington’s Waterfront Diving Center. It rents and sells all the flippers, face masks and rebreath-ers you’ll need for snorkeling or scuba diving in Lake Cham-plain. The shop also offers a wide variety of classes, from an introductory snorkeling clinic to a master scuba-diver course, and even charters boats to dive sites near the lake’s historic shipwrecks. More than 300 sunken ships sit below the surface, largely

BAIGNADELa façon la plus simple de profiter du lac Champlain, c’est d’enfiler son maillot et de sauter dans l’eau. Mais encore faut-il savoir où aller.

Ce n’est pas la Floride, mais la région de Burlington offre plu-sieurs lieux de baignade intéressants. Au sud, le parc Red Rocks est réputé pour ses sentiers boisés et ses falaises escarpées, mais aussi pour son accès au lac offrant de magnifiques panoramas.

Près du centre-ville, le parc Oakledge est un formidable en-droit pour se baigner, pique-niquer, faire un barbecue et observer les passants. Plus au nord, les baigneurs peuvent sauter dans le l’eau au parc Leddy, souvent moins fréquenté que les autres plages urbaines. Si le soleil est trop fort, il est possible d’aller patiner à l’aréna du parc.

intact in the cold, dark water. To view them without getting wet — and to learn their fascinating stories — take a shipwreck boat tour ($15-39) at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, located 30 miles south in Vergennes.

STANDUP PADDLEBOARDINGStandup paddleboarding (SUP) is a hybrid of surfing, kayaking and a core workout. Ali Marchildon, “chief wahine” at Burlington’s WND&WVS shop, calls it “the fastest-growing water sport in the world.” It’s caught on in Vermont, and for good reason: Gliding over Lake Champlain’s glossy surface, with the mountains and city rising around you, is undeniably appealing.

“It’s very accessible and, really, anybody of any age and any fitness level can find success right off the bat,” Marchildon says. “You don’t need a huge amount of practice or lessons in order to have fun doing it.”

Besides selling and renting SUP gear, WND&WVS offers courses and free SUP demos twice a week. Paddlesurf Champlain hosts a weekly group paddleboard tour that departs from Burlington’s Oakledge Park.

On y offre également un large éventail de cours, tant pour les débutants que pour les experts, et des bateaux nolisés pour se rendre aux sites de plongée situés à proximité d’épaves historiques. Plus de 300 navires reposent large-ment intacts sous les eaux froides et sombres du lac Champlain. Pour en apprendre davantage sur ces histoires fascinantes sans vous mouiller, réservez une croisière d’interprétation (de 15 à 39 $) au Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, à 48 km au sud, à Vergennes.

PLANCHE À RAMELa planche à rame est un hybride du surf, du kayak et de l’entraînement du tronc. Selon Ali Marchildon, « vahiné en chef » à la boutique WND&WVS de Burlington, il s’agit du « sport aquatique connaissant l’essor le plus rapide dans le monde ». S’il a tout de suite trouvé des adeptes au Vermont, ce n’est pas par hasard : en effet, glisser sur la surface lisse du lac Champlain, avec les montagnes et la ville en arrière-plan, voilà une perspective plutôt attirante.

« C’est un sport très accessible, dit Ali. N’importe qui, peu im-porte son âge ou sa forme physique, peut le maîtriser rapidement. Pas besoin d’avoir beaucoup de pratique ni de suivre de nombreux cours pour y prendre plaisir. »

En plus de vendre et de louer de l’équipement, WND&WVS offre des cours et des démonstrations de planche à rame gratuites deux fois par semaine. Paddlesurf Champlain propose une excursion de groupe hebdomadaire au départ du parc Oakledge à Burlington. Ses cours de planche à rame coûtent 30 $ l’heure. On peut y louer une planche pour 15 $ l’heure (55 $ pour toute la journée).

MOTOMARINERapides, bruyantes et un peu « m’as-tu-vu », les motomarines sont essentiellement des motos aquatiques. Pour ceux et celles qui aiment sentir le vent dans leur visage, elles constituent un moyen facile et exaltant d’explorer la côte, de s’arrêter pour un brin de baignade et d’accoster pour manger et boire — tout ça dans un après-midi.

Arrêtez-vous à Sail Lake Champlain, à l’Isle La Motte, à une heure au nord de Burlington. Selon la taille de l’engin, vous pourrez profiter

Umiak Outdoor Outfitters bills itself as Vermont’s lead-ing paddle sports shop. Kayak rentals, which Umiak offers at Burlington’s North Beach, range from $20 for two hours to $50 for six; canoe rentals also top out at $50.

Would you rather share your boating experience with all of your friends? Consider Vermont’s dragon boat scene. These long paddleboats — with an ornate dragon head at the bow and tail at the stern — seat up to 20 people and congregate at the annual Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival, which raises funds for cancer survivors. In Colchester’s Malletts Bay, just a short drive north from downtown Burlington, Bay Harbor Marina has four powerboats for rent: two 17-foot bowriders with inboard/outboard motors, and two 21-foot, 50-horsepower pontoon boats. Check with the marina for curre nt rates. In North Ferrisburgh, Marine Plus has six powerboats for rent, ranging from a 14-footer with a 9.9-horsepower engine to a 260-horsepower, 22-foot craft. Daily rates range from $165 to $350; fuel and launch fees are extra.

Lake Champlain, uno� cially known as the sixth Great Lake, is vast. Where to pilot your boat once you’ve rented it? V ermont farmers pick up their pace in the summer. There are cows to milk and fields to hay. Yet many also make time to welcome visitors who want to pick

strawberries, bite into a sweet baby carrot and see firsthand how food winds up on plates.

Some 150 Vermont farms open the gates to agritourism. The rural character of the state means that, even in Burling-ton, the most populous city in Vermont, farms are close by. How close? The pungent smell of manure occasionally wafts downtown from the University of Vermont farm just outside city limits. And right inside the city, small operations grow vegetables, flowers and berries in the fertile river valley fields known as the Intervale.

So whether you’re looking to milk a cow or sip wine among grapevines, plenty of easy rural destinations are just a stone’s throw from urban Burlington. Read on for a taste of Vermont’s visitor-friendly farms; visit diginvt.com for more.

A SUNSET FEASTJust a half-hour drive from downtown Burlington, in Shelburne, Bread and Butter Farm draws crowds by the hundreds for burger nights, held Fridays from mid-May to September. Families and friends gather to eat food raised, grown and baked on the premises. That includes grass-fed organic beef and buttery buns for the burgers, and fresh kale, lettuce, scallions and herbs in the side salads. Each plate comes with maple-syrup-sweetened lemonade and cookies. The view of the sun sinking behind the Adirondack Mountains is free, as is the live music provided by local and regional musicians.

Farm co-owners Corie Pierce and Adam Wilson started burger nights in 2011 for customers who were picking up produce and meat for the weekend. “We had 150 people show up, and the next week 200, and the next 250,” Pierce says. “It started building without any effort.”

Part of the allure is the opportunity “to be up close and personal” with food sources, she says. As for the other part: “My theory is that people don’t [otherwise] get to enjoy the magical hour outside.” breadandbutterfarm.com

RIPE FOR THE PICKINGThe Last Resort Farm, 35 minutes from Burlington, in Bristol, sits on 285 acres of rolling land. Woods fringe the hay fields, and Hogback Mountain rises behind the pick-your-own organic strawberry patch. A huge elm tree that has with-stood Dutch elm disease stands behind the old farmhouse,

currants and raspberries. Bring-ing your own pint-size child? The farm

cultivates a special “toddler row” so berry-picking youngsters needn’t worry about where they step.

In the winter, chores slow down and Doyle writes books. The latest, a children’s story, is due out this year. “Farming is inspiring,” she says. “There are lots of farmers who either write or play music or do something related. With more than 150,000 artworks exhibited in 38 buildings, Shelburne Museum is one of

Vermont’s most iconic landmarks. Located on 45 sprawling acres, the

museum’s stunning grounds rival its impressive collection of art, design and Americana

pieces. Music lovers take advantage of this unique locale outdoors at Ben & Jerry’s Concerts on the Green,

an annual summer concert series that draws

top talent to the state. This year’s lineup opens

in mid-June with indie-rock crooner David Gray. Gary Clark Jr.

and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue follow suit, bringing R&B and a mix of funk,

rock, jazz and hip-hop to the stage. Appearances by the Old Crow Medicine Show, the Decemberists and the Avett Brothers come later, with soulful star Bonnie Raitt closing out the series in August.

Did you think drive-in movie theaters were a thing of the past? You’d be wrong. Cinema lovers have been parking it at Sunset Drive-In Theatre for decades. Run by the same family since 1948, this longtime local fi xture is New England’s oldest continuously operated drive-in. Located just outside of Burlington in Colchester, the theater has four screens that show double features of fi rst-run fi lms for an al fresco cinematic experience. In May 2014, owner Peter Handy opened the Starlight Inn on theater grounds. The 11-room motel pays homage to legends of the silver screen. Themed rooms named after Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford and other Hollywood heavy hitters come with high-fi delity radios and views of the big screen — without the bugs.

area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a fl ight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to

look around!In June, the Gates area features Roger Coleman’s abstracted, nature-inspired paintings.

In the Skyway, Mike Sipe presents large-format photographs of the Lake Champlain region. Johanne Durocher Yordan’s abstract paintings — enhanced by maps, sheet music and text — can be seen over the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step!

Also for the month of June, look around the airport for Torin Porter’s steel and wood sculptures that explore humanity as it exists in his imagination.

Throughout July and August, Je� Clarke’s photographs of global travels are on view in the Gates. In recognition of Burlington’s 150th birthday, historic photos of the city in the 1860s are displayed alongside contemporary snapshots of the same views; you’ll fi nd this “then and now” exhibit in the Skyway. Lee Garrison’s abstract painti ngs of fl owers, grasses and waters hang by the escalator.

All of these artists live in or have spent time in Vermont. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their indi-vidual websites.

Neale Lunderville knows a thing or two about power — both the kind that drives motors and the kind that inspires people. As general manager of the Burlington Electric Department,

the municipally owned utility that powers Burlington International Airport, Lunderville oversaw this year’s deployment of a 500-kilowatt solar array on the roof of the airport’s parking garage. BTV’s new solar panels are part of a larger, community-wide effort to power the city of Burlington with 100 percent renewable energy.

Lunderville, a 40-year-old Burlington native, actually got his start in state politics. In his twenties, he ran the successful political campaign of Republican Jim Douglas, who served as Vermont’s gov-ernor from 2003 until 2011. During that time, Lunderville held several senior-level positions, including secretary of transportation and secretary of adminis-tration.

Lunderville went on to work for the state’s largest electric utility, Canadian-owned Green Mountain Power, then later helped start another company, NG Advantage, which delivers natural gas to companies located off the natural-gas pipeline.

After Tropical Storm Irene devastated large swaths of the state in August 2011, Vermont’s Democratic governor, Peter Shumlin, ap-pointed Lunderville to oversee the state’s recovery efforts.

Today, Lunderville manages a city-owned utility with 130 employ-ees and 20,000 customers, including the airport. As he explains, some of the lessons learned from Irene helped inspire his staff to make BTV more resilient to future severe-weather events.

How did you get started in electricity?While working in state politics, I realized how much excitement and enthusiasm Vermont has for energy. So much of Vermont’s future is linked to renewable energy.

BTV’s new solar array only began generating power in January. How’s it doing so far?It’s cranking! We have a digital dashboard that we can log into and see how much electricity it’s producing. The array was partially snow-cov-ered for half the winter, but the panels do best in the summertime.

Were there unique challenges to siting solar panels at an airport?One thing that was nice about the airport solar project was that there was no opposition to it. It’s up on the fifth floor, so unless you’re up in a plane, you don’t really see it. Another thing we really like about this project is, we’re not eating up green space. We put these solar panels on the built environment.

Any safety concerns about the panels creating glare for aircrafts?These panels are fixed, so we had to make sure that we would never be reflecting sun into the control tower or into the planes’ cockpits. Our engineers worked very closely with airport staff to position the panels and flatten their angle. These panels, which are pointed south-west, will never glare into the control tower.

What kind of a financial savings do you expect to reap from them?Over the anticipated 30-year life of the airport solar project, BED ex-pects to save $3.5 million in power costs, an average of approximately $117,000 annually.

Do the panels provide other benefits?By producing our own power in Burlington, it’s power that we ulti-mately can sell — both the energy itself and the renewable energy credits. The combination of those two allows us to make money for our customers and offset their costs. It’s a way for us to keep our rates low and stable.

Since the airport isn’t actually in the city of Burlington, it’s somewhat separate from the rest of Burlington Electric’s power grid. Correct?Yes. We’re using the solar array to help build a micro-grid at the air-port. They have some backup generators already, but with solar and battery backups, BTV can be completely self-sufficient. Creating more micro-grids gives us more resiliency and flexibility as unexpected events happen on the grid.

What do you like most about working for the city of Burlington?We’re in a city that loves energy. It’s progressive and willing to take some chances. People love to work here, and I love to work with them. There’s a great esprit de corps. Our employees really want to do right by their customers. What more can you ask for?

L’installation de panneaux solaires dans un aéroport pose-t-elle des défis particuliers?Ce qu’il y a de bien avec le projet solaire à l’aéroport, c’est qu’il n’a eu aucune opposition. Le dispositif est situé sur le toit du cinquième étage, donc à moins de se trouver dans un avion, il n’est pas vraiment visible. Autre aspect positif de ce projet, c’est qu’il n’empiète sur aucun espace vert. Nous avons installé nos panneaux à même le cadre bâti.

Les panneaux posent-ils un danger d’éblouissement pour les pilotes?Les panneaux étant fixes, il a fallu s’assurer qu’ils ne réfléchissent pas le soleil en direction de la tour de contrôle ou du cockpit des avions. Nos ingénieurs ont collaboré étroitement avec le personnel de l’aéroport pour positionner les panneaux et diminuer leur inclinaison. Comme ils pointent vers le sud-ouest, nous avons la certitude qu’ils ne causeront jamais d’éclat aveuglant pour la tour de contrôle.

Quelles économies pensez-vous retirer de ce projet?Sur les 30 ans que devrait durer le projet, le BED s’attend à écono-miser 3,5 millions de dollars en coûts d’énergie, soit une moyenne d’environ 117 000 $ par année.

Les panneaux présentent-ils d’autres avantages?Le fait de produire notre propre électricité à Burlington nous permet de la vendre — tant l’énergie en tant que telle que les crédits d’énergie renouvelable. Cette combinaison nous permet de faire de l’argent pour le bénéfice de nos clients et de compenser leurs coûts. C’est une façon pour nous de maintenir des tarifs abordables et stables.

Comme l’aéroport n’est pas situé dans la ville de Burlington, il est en fait séparé du reste du réseau de Burlington Electric.En effet. Nous utilisons la batterie solaire pour bâtir un micro-réseau à l’aéroport. Il y a déjà des génératrices auxiliaires, mais avec les pan-neaux et la batterie solaires, BTV peut être complètement autosuf-fisant. Le fait de créer plus de micro-réseaux nous permet d’accroître notre résilience et notre souplesse face aux imprévus.

Qu’aimez-vous le plus dans le fait de travailler pour la ville de Burlington?L’énergie occupe une place de choix. La ville est progressiste et elle est prête à prendre des risques. On sent que les employés aiment travailler ici, et j’aime travailler avec eux. Il règne un formidable esprit d’équipe et le personnel a à cœur de satisfaire la clientèle. Que demander de plus?
