As a father has compassion on
his children, so the LORDhas
compassion on those who fear
him. Psalm 103:13
As you know, we treated each one of you as
a father treats his children, exhorting and
encouraging you and insisting that you con-
duct yourselves as worthy of the God who
calls you. 1Thes 2:11-12
Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks
for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish? If
you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to
your children, how much more will your heavenly Father
give good things to those who ask him. Mt 7:9-11

While he was still a long way
off, his father caught sight
of him, and was filled with
compassion. He ran to his son,
embraced him and kissed him.
Luke 15:20
“where you saw how
the LORD, your
God, carried you, as
one carries his own
child, all along your
journey until you
arrived at this
place.” Deut 1:31
...choose today whom you will serve,
the gods your ancestors served beyond
the River or the gods of the Amorites in
whose country you are dwelling. As for
me and my household, we will serve
the LORD. Josh 24:15
Hear, O children, a father’s instruction, be atten-
tive, that you may gain understanding! Prov 4:1
Indeed, I have sin-
gled him out that
he may direct his
children and his
household in the
future to keep the
way of the
LORD
by doing what is
right and just.
Gen 18:19
Children, obey your parents [in the Lord, for
this is right. “Honor your father and mother.”
This is the first commandment with a prom-
ise,“that it may go well with you and that you
may have a long life on earth. Eph 6:1-3
Whom the
LORDloves
he reproves,
as a father,
the son he
favors.
Prov 3:1112

A Note on the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt
The Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt was created in 1961. It is domiciled in Rivers State,
which lies in the southernmost part of Nigeria on the Atlantic Coast. The population of Rivers
State is about 6.1 million. Its Catholic population is about 2.4 million, which continues to grow
steadily. The remaining 3.7 million comprises Protestants, Pentecostals /Evangelicals, Indigenous
religionists, and those with no religious affiliations whatsoever.
The Diocese of Port Harcourt faces some challenges. In the face of the fastgrowing Catho-
lic population, we are also lucky in the sense that we are beginning to have many vocations as
many young people are considering the call to priesthood. At the same time, we do not have suf-
ficient resources to see them through their long period of training and formation in the seminary.
It costs about $1,000 US to support a seminarian’s education for one year, which is about $83 a
month.
Moreover, from its inception, the leadership of the Diocese of Port Harcourt labored tire-
lessly in the work of evangelization, establishing many secondary schools in various parts of the
diocese. The schools were key centers and instruments of evangelization and sound Catholic ed-
ucation. But that has been at the secondary level. That is why the Diocese is, therefore, now
building a new college (Stella Maris College) to help promote Catholic education at the tertiary
level. The school will provide tuition scholarships for less privileged students whose education
has been interrupted especially young schoolgirls due to poverty or other familial constraints.
With good education, they can actualize their potential and become empowered and equipped
to meaningfully contribute to society. We, therefore, ask you to please join us in supporting our
mission through your prayers and generous financial assistance.
Thank you and God bless you for your support.
