MINISTERS OF WORSHIP February 3, 2019

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus returned to His home town of Nazareth and entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day “according to his custom.” An attendant handed Him a scroll of the prophet Isaiah to read; Jesus unrolled it and searched for the first two verses of Chapter 61. When He had finished, Jesus sat down assuming the posture of a rabbi who is about to teach. The eyes of everyone present were fixed on the Teacher, in anxious anticipation. Jesus did not disappoint. He proceeded to deliver perhaps the most powerful sermon in all of history. “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” These eight words said it all - this statement not only expresses the identity of Jesus; it also explained His mission statement using the words of Isaiah. The Spirit had “anointed Him to bring glad tidings to the poor. . .to proclaim liberty to captives; recovery of sight to the blind. . .and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” The reference to an “acceptable year” would resonate among those in the synagogue. It referred to the Jubilee year of forgiveness of debts and the release of slaves. Jesus had just announced that He came to serve - not to be served. In saying this, He rejected the traditional understanding of the title, “Messiah,” that is, the anointed one who would lead Israel to victory and vindication. Jesus gave the title a new meaning - “servant.”

As disciples of Jesus, His mission statement is now ours. We wonder, who does He mean by “the poor” . . . “the captives”. . . “the blind”? When we think of our poor brothers and sisters, we usually visualize those living in economic poverty and the misery that accompanies it. Perhaps Jesus also would include anyone who is in need – be it materially, emotionally, socially, or spiritually. When considering those held captive, we imagine people who are in prison or who are being held against their will. Today Jesus would include those who are slaves to addiction, compulsion, hatred, prejudice, jealousy, greed, or any other sinful failing. While we empathize, as Jesus did, with those who suffer from physical blindness, His concerns are also with those who suffer from a loss of “insight.” Those who do not understand the truth found in His teachings and way of loving and serving others are truly blind.

The words Jesus proclaimed in the synagogue two thousand years ago still resound today. Isaiah’s passage is being fulfilled in our hearing; but it can be better fulfilled in our doing. As baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, we are His arms, His legs, His eyes, and His voice. It is up to us to bring His message of mercy and justice to the world.

Reflect on your baptismal call to serve. How can you live out Christ’s mission?

The Living Word

Jay Speca, Director of Faith Formation

You are Christ's Body and Indi-vidually Parts of It – The image of the Church as the Body of Christ is described in great detail by Saint Paul in today’s second reading. His words should inspire us as we come to understand that, no matter our gifts, we contribute to the life

of the Church and to the work of making Christ known to the world. His words should also console us to know that we do not suffer alone. When any one member of the Body of Christ is hurting or in distress, the entire Church and her people are there to share in their pain and support them as they are strengthened. At the same time, to understand the Church as a Body, a unity of many and varied parts, is a challenge to us. There is a tension between what I want and what is good for me, and what is good for another and for all. As we continue our journey On Mission for The Church Alive! our goal is to strengthen and grow the Church as the Body of Christ. That means each of us should seek to be strengthened in faith, hope and love, too. Each of us has a role to play in making the Church ever more alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
