Humanitarian cargo shipped to Dubai on Emirates’ 38th A380

Airbus Corporate Foundation, Emirates Airline, and Action Against Hunger (ACF) will utilize future A380 Emirates deliveries over the next few years to transport humanitarian support to the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD). The announcement was made to commemorate World Children’s Day.

On October 29, the first goodwill flight landed with 31 tonnes of cargo to support ACF fight hunger. The shipment travelled more than 4,800 kilometers from Hamburg, Germany to be stored in the United Nation Humanitarian Response facility in Dubai. The food bars will be used to feed children five and under, suffering from malnutrition.

This is the first long-term agreement the Airbus Corporate Foundation has made with a customer airline for goodwill flights. The Airbus Corporate Foundation has been working with ACF since 2009.

Tim Clark, president, Emirates Airline,

said: “The relationship between Emirates and Airbus began more than 26 years ago and today widens to help people around the world. We are proud to work with the Airbus Corporate Foundation and ACF to facilitate the movement of humanitarian cargo to the regions and people who need it the most. Through this partnership, the maiden flights of up to four Emirates’ A380s a year will also be goodwill flights arriving in Dubai with relief goods for the UNHRD.”

Jean-Baptiste Lamarche, logistics director, ACF, said: “This partnership is very valuable to ACF. As one of our privileged partners, the Airbus Foundation helps us to intervene rapidly and efficiently during emergency situations, like after the natural disasters in Haiti in 2010, and recently in the Philippines.”

Fabrice Brégier, Airbus president and CEO, said: “It is the right time for this partnership as there are still 101

A380 to be delivered to Emirates in the next years. This schedule gives the opportunity to continuously transport relief goods to the UNHRD in Dubai.”

In recent years, Airbus has built up a global network of airlines and relief organisations to support international humanitarian causes. Delivery flights of new aircraft have been used on numerous occasions to transport goods to destinations in need all over the world.

The Airbus Corporate Foundation was created in December 2008 to facilitate charitable activities worldwide within an international network of employees and partners. The organisation focuses its support on three themes: humanitarian and community support, youth development and the environment.

Since its launch in December 2008, the Airbus Corporate Foundation has facilitated some 35 relief or goodwill flights to numerous destinations all over the globe.

Dubai Airshow …A Story of Success!

One more time, the United Arab Emirates proves its continuous ability to surprise its visitors, emphasizing to the whole world that its success stories never end, and that through will and determination it can do miracles.

The UAE, as usual, sings an unusual note. Its visitor can only see the stories of growth and prosperity and hear the news of sustainable development witnessed by all sectors in the country. In line with this, the UAE is also mastering its ability to organize the largest exhibitions at all levels.

The Dubai Airshow 2013 serves as only the latest story in this line of success complementing to the good result of other exhibitions, like IDEX, in the minds of the UAE citizens and visitors from around the world.

More than twenty-six years have elapsed since the launch of this airshow in its first edition, in 1986, under the title ‘Arab Airshow’. The show, which was only a small commercial exhibition focused on civil aviation, has now become a big world event that gravitates all those concerned or interested in both civil and military aviation. It now represents one of the most important global markets for sellers within this industry.

Observers and analysts usually wait for the conclusion of an event to evaluate the extent of its success. The indicators of the success of the Dubai Airshow 2013, however, like other events organized by the UAE, have been visible to the naked eye from its very first day. With the elapse of each of the following days, the success indicators have been rising higher and higher.

The success is obvious from the big numbers of visiting delegations headed by leaders and officials from many countries, and from the big deals that were, and are still being concluded. The majority of these deals have been signed by the UAE companies, particularly Emirates and Etihad Airways, while other regional and international companies also have many reasons to celebrate.

This is the concluding day on which the Dubai Airshow 2013 says goodbye to its visitors, and the words of farewell are small and short: “We’ll be waiting for you at the next airshow, and we shall be able to amaze you again!”

With increased interest in the 787 for VIP completion, officials at L-3 Platform Integration said

the company is well-prepared for the initial completions on this new platform.

“We have spent almost US$ 2 million and three years of focused effort to ensure our team is prepared for the technologies of this revolutionary new aircraft type. We are also working very closely with Boeing to integrate the capabilities that the company offers into our supplier base,” said Ken McAlpin, L-3 Platform Integration’s vice president of VIP and head-of-state programs. “Our team has developed some proprietary concepts that should allow L-3 to offer the best overall combination of quality, pricing and delivery speed.”

“We have invested significantly over the past several years in internal research and development programs to ensure the finished product reflects the technical expertise and ingenuity for which our VIP and head-of-state

completion center is known,” McAlpin said.

When L-3 Platform Integration was granted a four-year extension of its U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Organization Designation Authorization (ODA) in early 2013, the Boeing 787 was added to the types of aircraft L-3 is authorized to modify. The FAA-granted ODA allows L-3 Platform Integration

to issue certificates of airworthiness and supplemental type certificates as a designee on behalf of the federal agency.

L-3’s VIP and head-of-state completion center was one of the first to engage with Boeing on the 787, having collaborated with the aircraft manufacturer and a major engine supplier in 2007 to qualify the first 787 engine solution on a flying test bed aircraft.

The human side of aviation

Spotlight on services and solutions

The Middle East Business Aviation Association (MEBAA) proved there’s a humanitarian side to the

business at the airshow, after signing a deal with the United Nations World Food Programme to donate US$20 with every MENA private flight.

Ali Ahmed Al Naqbi, MEBAA’s founding chairman, said: “Our new ‘Fly and Feed’ programme is a commitment from MEBAA to support this most worthy cause. The idea might have come out of this region, but it will become global through our association with the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC).

“Many people perceive our industry as a tool for high net worth individuals. But this is not quite true. It’s a tool for productivity and profitability. Our intention is to support the WFP, a great

cause. With this, we want to change the perception of business aviation,” he said.

Al Naqbi suggested the regional industry would be worth US$ 1billion by 2018, and have 1,375 registered business aircraft by 2020.

Capt. Cesar Arroyo, WFP Chief of Aviation Service, said: “The aviation arm of the WFP is the first-line air transport service provider to the humanitarian community, operating in remote, challenging environments, where no safe surface transport or commercial aviation options are available.”

Last year, WFP Aviation transported more than 350,000 people and 6,000 metric tonners of light humanitarian cargo in countries including Afghanistan, Chad, the DRC, South Sudan and Mali.

Abu Dhabi-based ADCOM Systems has also donated a US$ 54.5 million

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system to the United Nations Environment Organisation for humanitarian and environmental purposes. The system, invented, designed and manufactured in the UAE, is designed as a multi-functional, remotely piloted flying platform.

Dr. Ali M. Al Dhaheri, CEO of ADCOM, said: “The civilian version of the Global UAV can carry up to 18 air-drop containers for search and rescue survival equipment. Two extra heavy load pods can carry bulky and extra heavy air-drop containers, while one cargo hold can be utilised for humanitarian and environmental missions. If the flight operation of Global UAV saves one human life, it was worth developing such a highly sophisticated and extraordinary UAV system.”

Farsound Aviation, the specialist MRO supply chain and distribution company, plans to expand with

a new distribution facility in the UAE, after successfully securing a contract with Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT).

The contract win, which sees Farsound support the company with its maintenance and repair requirements for the next three years, follows a

strategic focus of the company directors on the growth into the UAE.

Lee Kelsey, sales director at Farsound Aviation said: “This is a significant step forward for the company. Despite strong competition, we have been able to secure a contract with an important local business, which gives us the platform we require to take our business forward in this important market.”

To ensure it continues to deliver

the specialist expertise required by its customers, earlier in 2013 Farsound divisionalised its manufacturing and logistics arms into two autonomous entities – Farsound Aviation Ltd and Farsound Engineering.

Farsound Aviation will build on its 27 years of experience, offering a targeted, bespoke service to its customers. The company hopes to open its first site in the UAE next year.

Boeing has projected that airlines in the Middle East will need nearly 100,000 new pilots and

technicians to support the expanding demand for new airplane deliveries over the next two decades.

Boeing released the regional projections of the 2013 Pilot and Technician Outlook, a respected industry forecast of aviation personnel, at the show. With the aviation industry in the Middle East growing faster than the world average, the outlook predicts the region will require 40,000 pilots and 53,100 technicians over the next 20 years.

“We’re seeing a significant, urgent need for competent aviation personnel in the Middle East and across the globe due to the growth in airline fleets,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president of Boeing Flight Services. “We are working hard with airlines, regulators, independent flight schools and other industry groups to make training accessible, affordable and efficient so that anyone in the Middle East, or anywhere else in the world, who qualifies can become a pilot or maintenance technician in this industry.”

According to the report, for the Middle East region, an average of 2,000 new pilots and more than 2,600 new airline technicians will be needed each year to

meet the expected demand. The 2013 global outlook projects

significant increases in pilot demand, compared to previous forecasts, in all regions except Europe, which declined slightly over last year’s outlook. Overall, the demand is driven by steadily increasing airplane deliveries. In the Middle East, more than 60% of the pilot demand will be driven by increased deliveries of twin-aisle or widebody airplanes.

In terms of demand for technicians, the introduction of more efficient and smarter airplanes will require fewer mechanics over time, as aging aircraft, which typically require more maintenance, are retired from service. New airplane technologies

featuring more advanced components are likely to lead in some areas to lower maintenance requirements and corresponding lower technician demand.

“This is an issue that has the attention of the entire aviation industry,” said Carbary. “To attract a new generation of pilots and technicians, we need to train them in new ways. At Boeing, we are continually looking at innovative training methods, moving away from paper and chalkboard-based learning to incorporate tablets, eBooks, gaming technology and three-dimensional electronic modeling techniques. We need to make sure aviation is as great a career option for the world’s youth as it is for us.”

Ballistic missile defense radar’s performance boosted

Rockwell Collins demonstrates its cabin, cockpit and network communications offerings

Ballistic missile raids, large numbers of simultaneously launched weapons, may soon

have a tougher time penetrating allied air defenses. Raytheon has started upgrading the AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar’s signal and data processing equipment (SDPE) to enable the ‘brains’ of the radar to more quickly and accurately discriminate threats from non-threats and enhance radar performance to protect against missile raids.

An integral element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS), AN/TPY-2 is a mobile X-band radar that helps protect the US, warfighters and America’s allies and security

partners from the more than 6,300 ballistic missiles that, according to U.S. Intelligence estimates, are not controlled by the U.S., NATO, China or Russia.

“Raytheon is building on the AN/TPY-2’s record of outstanding performance by improving the system because rogue states are constructing more ballistic missiles that have longer ranges and are increasingly more sophisticated,” said Dave Gulla, vice president of Global Integrated Sensors in Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business. “The security of the US, our warfighters and our allies depends on having reliable, capable systems like the AN/TPY-2 to help

counter the growing ballistic missile threat.”

The upgrade, which is being performed on AN/TPY-2s bound for a foreign military sales customer in the Middle East, will also be inserted into new AN/TPY-2s that Raytheon is building for the US. Raytheon is replacing the old SDPE with a state-of-the-art, commercial off-the-shelf computer that has approximately five times the processing power of the old system. The new SDPE also weighs less, uses less power and takes up less space than the older system, providing space for future growth.

Leading international aviation fuel supplier, Air BP, once again demonstrated its excellence in

operations in the build up for the busy Dubai Air Show 2013 through a quick and efficient response to a call for extra fuellers.

Ahead of this year’s Dubai Air Show the venue Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) requested fuelling equipment support from local suppliers due to the increased aviation activity. Air BP swiftly and efficiently delivered on an urgent request for a bowser to be delivered ahead of the event.

On receiving the request Air BP immediately put into place its thorough operational procedures to ensure a safe, injury and damage free delivery, of the vital equipment.

Air BP focused on communicating with the preferred transport contractor on the type of vehicle suitable for transporting an expensive fuel truck. Details such as sharing a photo of the fueller with the contractor, providing detailed measurements and personally observing the loading task, ensured both a safe and smooth loading operation was carried out. The truck will now be in use throughout the air show. Furthermore Air BP’s excellence in operations will be in evidence this week as it supports Airbus and the Royal Air Force aerobatic team, The Red Arrows, at the show.

Since 1932 Air BP has successfully expanded its operational capacity in the Middle East. It now regularly serves 22 airports in the region

providing approximately 600 million gallons of fuel a year. It is active in the commercial market with 40 airline customers and is developing its business aviation activity with eight clients and partners across the region.

For the Dubai Air Show, the company has anticipated the delivery of around 30,000 gallons of fuel to over 30 aircraft.

“Safety is Air BP’s top priority when providing services to our customers which is why we implement complex risk analysis and detailed operational process across the full spectrum of fuel handling operations. It is an area where Air BP is aiming to lead the industry and we believe adds value for our customers,” said Giri Iyengar, regional sales and marketing manager for Air BP.
