I am excited, thrilled and honored to serve as the TX OK Chapter President. Over the past 6 months I have had the great privilege to meet so many of you, serve with you, and watch you lead on so many levels, both in IIDA and in your communities. On behalf of the Chapter Board, I just want to say thank you for all that you do! Our Chapter has both compassion and strength of heart.

We have an amazing opportunity! It goes without saying that as a profession we struggle with “getting the word out” to the public describing what we do as Registered Interior Designers. The reality is we do a lot for a lot of organizations that range the entire gambit of inhabitable spaces. You name it and one of us probably specializes in it. Therefore, the answer to this question or challenge is different for each one of us. Yes, there are some basic common threads and cornerstones – but the truth of the matter is it’s personal. Our clients understand what we do because we have that opportunity to demonstrate our value to them and their organizations. So, what is the next step in the process? Check out the new 2/2080 program to learn more and how you can be part of the solution.

Part of being a professional means we must keep up to date on systems, technologies, accessibility and sustainability. This means continuing education. This issue of the chapter insight delves into current and future requirements for Texas, Oklahoma and IIDA. There’s a lot on the table, change is on the way – so, don’t be left in the dark!

Each August, the Chapter comes together to celebrate excellence in design, leadership and volunteerism at the Annual Gala. This year we honored six projects with Design Excellence and eleven projects with Honorable Mentions. Tandus Flooring was awarded Chapter Sponsor of the Year. Additionally, our organization could not function without the extraordinary dedication from our Chapter Volunteers of the Year: Amie Keener, Kelly Warfield Moore, Ann Briganti, Ashley Barnett Griffith, Jessy Fuller, Melanie Wick, and Kip Altstaetter. And the evening would not have been complete without a touching celebratory toast from Lynn Metz of Haworth. The award winning projects are highlighted in this issue.

In November I travelled to Austin to testify as a Registered Interior Designer before the Sunset Review Commission. I was encouraged by the numbers of interior designers and supporters at the Capitol … the staff, however, was overwhelmed! We continue to work with TAID to make our voices heard to the legislators on the Review Commission. Stay tuned. The Commission Report is read on Dec. 19th.

The IIDA TX OK Chapter 13th Annual Student Conference presented by Haworth is growing bigger, getting stronger and reaching out to more interior design programs. We are pleased to announce the conference, residing in Houston, is aimed to host up to 150 students for a full two days – adding significant educational and networking components. Check out the article inside and save the date: February 21 and 22! And don’t forget, the IIDA Student Mentorship Week starts the week of February 25th – March 1st. Sign up at www.iida.org.

I am reminded time and time again that we have the strongest and most active City Centers in the association. Likewise, we have a phenomenal Board of Directors for the TX OK Chapter. We are driven to make your experience with IIDA in 2013 inspirational, educational and valuable in 2013.

Each of us has an opportunity – should you choose to accept it. Our Texas Oklahoma Members are integrated in their communities, volunteering for many efforts – both related to Interior Design / IIDA and those personally driven. The Chapter Board recently initiated a volunteer program titled: 2 / 2080. The basis of this program is for our Members to volunteer in their community AS a Registered Interior Designer or representing the Interior Design Profession for 2 hours over the next calendar year. That’s right, just two hours. This could be for your child’s school, a homeless shelter, charitable fundraiser, Interior Design Day at the Capitol – anything you are already involved with where you can rub shoulders with others in your community. Share what you do with others! Additionally, each of our City Centers works with local charitable organizations that have volunteer days. Your options are endless!

Over the course of the next year the Chapter will track these individual efforts to reach (and exceed) 2080 hours of volunteer effort. This number represents a full time employee – 2080 hours of Interior Design Advocacy! You are our profession’s best voice. Simply email our Chapter Administrator your name / City Center / hours and volunteer effort – and we will do the rest: Chapter@iida-tx-ok.org. No forms. No signatures…just a simple email.

IIDA TX OK Chapter 13th Annual Student Conference Presented by HaworthFebruary 21-22, 2013 | Houston, Texas

The 13th annual Student Conference presented by Haworth will begin the year with a bang, as 150 students from across our Chapter and beyond travel to Houston, Texas for a 2-day event! We have volunteer and underwriting opportunities still available for every part of the event.

DESIGN CHARRETTE | Schools wishing to participate in the charrette must be IIDA Campus Centers in good standing. The Design Charrette allows two to four of the top students from each Campus Center to participate in a four-hour design competition administered by a regional design firm. Students are chosen to participate based on professor recommendation, and are to be junior or senior level student members of IIDA. In addition to our typical award, the winning charrette team members will be sent home with a letter of recommendation from the event chairs.

WORKSHOPS | New This Year! We’ve added programming to extend the conference Thursday. For those students not participating in the Design Charrette, there will be three 90 minute workshops available to attend. Students participating in Workshops are encouraged to attend all three topics. Similar to the 101 Topics, workshops will be extended and slightly more interactive informative sessions that relate to your professional career following graduation.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNIT (open to the industry) | New This Year! At Student Conference 2013, IIDA Houston City Center is hosting our first ever CEU in concurrence with the Industry Tabletop Expo! We welcome all local industry professionals attend and encourage you to stop by the Expo across the hallway for networking and knowledge before or after the CEU.

INDUSTRY TABLETOP EXPO (open to the industry) | This product fair is sure to be bigger and better than ever! Across the central USA, we are currently looking for design firms, student lenders, graduate programs, manufacturers, multi-line reps, dealerships, and professional organizations to underwrite tabletops for this event. Don’t be left out of the largest interior design student Expo in our State – there is a place for everyone. This event brings value to all working designers as well. Mark your calendars to attend Feb 21st .

KEYNOTE LUNCHEON (open to the industry) | Mr. Eileen Jones of Perkins+Will will join us to share insights and strategies on branding. As Principal and Global Discipline Leader for Perkins+Will Branded Environments, Eileen Jones utilizes a research-based design approach that identifies and integrates a client’s unique mission, vision, values and culture into tangible brand expressions, experiences, and environments. The Keynote Luncheon is open to professionals, so be sure to reserve tickets for you and your clients today. Your lunch is sure to be free of boredom, as we conclude Student Conference 2012 with a bang!

THE WHOLE PACKAGE | New This Year! We’ve added programming to extend the conference Friday. For those wishing to stay Friday afternoon, The Whole Package session will cover interview practice and branding tips + tricks. The list of Instructors will be released in 2013!

Student registration opens for TX OK schools on Monday, January 1, 2013. The conference includes three additional meals this year. It’s sure to be a GREAT event – we hope to see you there!

Professional IIDA RequirementsMost Associations have continuing education requirements for its Members, and IIDA is no exception. If you are a Professional or Associate Member, you are required to complete and report 1.0 CEU (10 hours) of Continuing Education every 2 years. This includes Educators, IIDA Fellows and Chapter Board Members. The current compliance period runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012, so if you haven’t started recording your hours yet we’re at the halfway point!

The current compliance period applies if you became a Professional or Associate Member prior to January 1, 2012. If you became a Professional or Associate Member after January 1, 2012 your first compliance period begins January 1, 2014 and ends December 31, 2015.

IIDA accepts all IDCEC approved courses. These courses do NOT have to be HSW (Health, Safety, Welfare), Sustainable or Barrier-Free. For example, if you take a course pertaining to Professional Development that is not HSW but is IDCEC approved, you can count it toward your IIDA CEU requirement.

As an IIDA Member it is your responsibility to maintain your own Continuing Education records. Now this is even easier with the online IDCEC Continuing Education Registry, which is free for Members. If you attend a course that is a non-IDCEC approved course, a new review process will begin in January 2013. The Individual Approval Reporting Form (IARF) will no longer be available as of December 31, 2012, and more information will be available on the IIDA website in January.

After each compliance period, IIDA randomly selects Members to audit their CE hours. The last compliance period some of those audited included International Board Members and TX OK Chapter Board Members, so it is important that you keep your CE records up-to-date in case your lucky name gets drawn!

IDCEC RequirementsIDCEC’s operations are now centralized and the online Continuing Education Registry has been successfully launched. For the first time in the history of IDCEC you have a central place to search and report continuing education activity. Our website address is www.idcec.org

Professional Development

If you are a member of IIDA who is required to take continuing education courses you will be able to use the CE Registry free of cost. Please keep this number where you can access it easily. You must provide the 10 digit number at all IDCEC approved seminars you attend. Do not share your password and keep it secure at all times. This number allows you free access to the online IDCEC Registry. Please change your password to one you can remember.

The centralized registry gives you access to your personalized account which includes:

• Reporting of IDCEC approved courses and conferences.• Reporting of Non-IDCEC courses and conferences.• Allows upload of scanned back-up documentation such

as certificates of completion and validated conference cards.

• Printing your unofficial transcript of CEU activity.• Ordering an official IDCEC transcript.($15 transcript fee)

Important points to remember before taking an IDCEC approved courseCourses not registered and scheduled with IDCEC can be reported as a Non-IDCEC course. However, IDCEC strongly encourages you to only register or attend a course that has been approved and scheduled through IDCEC.

At the end of the class you will be handed a class-code. This code is different from the course number and has a structured format (CC123456-1000). If you are not given this class-code there is a possibility that your attendance will not be reported by the provider and you will not get credit for the course. Insist on a class-code.

Providers are required to submit attendance on your behalf. Do not accept a paper certificate of completion in lieu of online attendance. You will not be able to claim IDCEC credit with a paper certificate of completion. Providers must report attendance to IDCEC online on your behalf within five business days of the event.Once the provider reports your attendance it will show up on your IDCEC online account. You must complete an online course survey to obtain an electronic certificate of completion for the course. The record will automatically show up on your IDCEC transcript.

Important points to remember when taking an IDCEC approved ConferenceYou must self-report IDCEC conferences into your IDCEC account.

Validate your attendance by stamping the conference card at the entrance to the session you attended. Retain your conference card at the end of the conference. Scan your conference card and make an electronic copy so you can attach it to your record when you report the conference into your IDCEC account. New Texas Registrant Continuing Education RequirementsBeginning on January 1, 2013 Registered Interior Designers in Texas must complete at least 12 CEPH (Continuing Education Program Hours) per renewal period. All 12 CEPH must include the study of subjects related to your profession and be pertinent to health, safety, and welfare to the public. A breakdown of the minimum hours:

• 1hourrelatedtosustainableorenergy-efficient design• 1hourrelatedtobarrier-freedesign• 10hoursrelatedtootherHSWtopicsoradditional sustainable/barrier-free design

CEPH must include at least 8 hours of classroom/classroom equivalent structured activities. An online or monograph course may be considered classroom equivalent activity if the course contains an independently graded exam.

A maximum of 4 hours may be self-directed: reading books or professional magazines, touring buildings, historic sites or landmarks that incorporate elements of your design profession. Self-directed study must include the study of relevant technical and professional subjects that are related to your profession and be pertinent to the health, safety and welfare of the public.

Definitions Associated with Continuing EducationCEPH: is a Continuing Education Program Hour. One CEPH equals a minimum of fifty (50) minutes of actual course time. When calculating your CEPH total please remember TBAE does not award credit for introductory remarks, breaks, business or administrative matters related to courses of study.

For the first time in the history of IDCEC you have a central place to search and report continuing education activity.

Health/Safety/Welfare: Health may include aspects of design that have beneficial effects among users of buildings or sites and address health and environmental issues. Safety may include aspects of design intended to limit or prevent accidental injury or death among users of buildings or sites. Welfare may include aspects of design that engender positive emotional responses among or enable equal access by users of buildings or sites.

Barrier-free design: is the design of a building or a facility or the design of an alteration of a building or a facility, which complies with the Texas Accessibility Standards, the American with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines, or similarly accepted standards for accessible design.

Energy-Efficient Design: is the design of a project and the specification of materials that minimize the consumption of energy in the use of the project. The term includes energy efficiency strategies by design as well as the incorporation of alternative energy systems.

Sustainable Design: is an integrative approach to the process of design which seeks to avoid depletion of energy, water, and raw material resources; prevent environmental degradation caused by facility and infrastructure developments during their implementation and over their life cycle; and create environments that are livable and promote health, safety and well-being. Sustainability is the concept of meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

New Oklahoma Registrant CEU Requirements?Oklahoma Members keep your eyes and ears open for a potential verbiage change to your legislation to include wording that requires continuing education for Registered Interior Designers. The exact particulars are not ironed out, so keep informed via OIDC’s website. www.oidc.info/ IIDA will continue to update you as information is available.

Currently, though, both Professional and Associate Members still have CEU requirements for your IIDA Memberships.

The Annual Awards Gala was held on Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Westin, Galleria in Dallas, Texas. Awards were given in seven categories: Corporate, Healthcare, Hospitality, Institutional/Educational, Retail, Government and Sustainability. Also presented were the Chapter Volunteers of the Year, City Center Volunteers of the Year, City Center Underwriters of the Year, Chapter Sponsor of the Year Award and the highly coveted Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle Award is the highest honor IIDA can bestow upon a design firm. The award is granted only to firms that have consistently contributed to the highest aspiration of the profession, community and the IIDA while remaining committed to enhancing the quality of life through excellence in Interior Design.

On August 9 & 10, 2012, over 2,500 interior designers, architects, facility managers, interior design students, and other vital design industry members from 23 states packed Dallas Market Hall for METROCON12 Expo & Conference. The annual two-day tradeshow, which concentrates on featuring the latest in products, services and innovations, experienced its greatest success in its 10-year history. Not only did its 388 booths sell out 16 days ahead of the official close of exhibitor sales, but 93% of this year’s sponsorships sold in less than 90 days.

Organized through volunteer collaboration between the Texas-Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA and the Texas Chapter of ASID, the budget-conscious show offered attendees 278 diverse vendors, 55 interior design-related continuing education courses and a happy hour designed especially for networking. TAID, TBAE, IIDA, and the rest of the alphabet soup can really start to make your head spin! As VP of GRA for the TX OK Chapter it’s my duty to sit on the Texas Association of Interior Designers Board and report back to the IIDA members here in Texas. As most of you know it’s been a VERY busy year so far, so let’s break this down step by step so we are all on the same page and prepared for the challenges ahead.

A Quick Lesson in who’s who: IIDA: International Interior Designer Association is a professional networking and educational Association of 13,000 Members in 10 specialty practice forums and 31 Chapters around the world. http://www.iida.org/TAID: Texas Association for Interior Design is an advocacy group speaking as a single unified voice on legislative issues which affect the business of interior design in Texas. http://www.supporttaid.org/TBAE: The Texas Board of Architectural Examiners is a multi-profession regulatory agency that oversees the examination, registration, and professional regulation of architects, interior designers, and landscape architects. http://www.tbae.state.tx.us/Sunset: the regular assessment of the need for a state agency to exist. Texas agencies typically undergo review once every twelve years.Sunset Staff: Sunset staff gathers information from a broad range of sources. As a part of the review process, each agency submits a Self-Evaluation Report (SER) to the Sunset Commission. The SER identifies problems, opportunities, and issues that the agency feels should be considered in the Sunset review. http://www.sunset.state.tx.us/staff.htmlSunset Commission: 5 members of the Senate appointed by the Lieutenant Governor, 5 members of the House of Representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and 2 members of the public, one each appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Sunset Commission conducts a public hearing on each agency under review after publication of the staff report. http://www.sunset.state.tx.us/members.htm TBAE is currently undergoing Sunset by the state of Texas. At this time The Sunset Staff have finished their review and have officially published their report containing statutory and management recommendations to the Sunset

Commission concerning TBAE. They have recommended deregulation of Registered Interior Designers. This was a recommendation only, and will be reviewed and decided on by the actual Sunset Commission. A public hearing was held on November 13th to discuss the recommendations and to hear from the public concerning the recommendations. Thank you to all that attended. On December 19th the Commission will make public their decision to either continue with the recommendation to deregulate Registered Interior Designers, change the recommendation and leave TBAE as it stands now, or change the recommendation and make changes to TBAE registration requirements (Grandfathering, education/experience requirements, etc.). So now what? The TAID board and Donna Vining for the past 27 years have fought tirelessly to promote the common interest of the industry, communicate concerns to government, and to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. TAID has been watching this carefully all year, and is still busily educating the Sunset Commission on why deregulation is a bad idea for Texas. Here are few things we can all do to help them.

• Send in your TAID renewals now. • Donate to the Design PAC on the TAID website• Send in your IIDA renewals now, and agree to the

GRA assessment. This money goes directly to TAID in Texas and to OIDC in Oklahoma.

• Save the date for capitol days. We will need your support in Austin on March 5th 2013

Once we know the decision we will know how to act. We could be fighting this during the upcoming legislative year, fingers crossed we don’t, but it’s best to be prepared. We will be in constant contact with our members throughout this, so keep an eye on your emails, and support any local GRA fundraisers and events.

The Texas Oklahoma Chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) hosted its annual Leaders Breakfast on Wednesday October 3rd at the Dallas Omni Hotel featuring Eric Ryan, co-founder and chief brand architect of Method Products, Inc. Deborah Fuller, RID, IIDA, LEED AP was honored for her 30 years of work in the interior design industry, and particularly for her efforts in the area of sustainability and LEED certification.

Mr. Ryan provided the keynote address, “The Method Method: Seven Obsessions That Helped Our Scrappy Start-Up Turn an Industry Upside Down. “By fusing his knowledge of fashion and design, Ryan created a modern and stylish line of environmentally-conscious household products that have become must-have lifestyle accessories in home around the world. His newest book, The Method Method, takes readers through the seven “obsessions” that he and his co-founder, Adam Lowry, relied on to go from selling cleaning products out of the trunk of a car to capturing valuable shelf space typically reserved for large corporations.

Ms. Fuller’s work as a green building consultant and materials expert demonstrates an unwavering commitment to improve the quality of occupants’ working and living environments. She is currently part of the HOK Sustainable Leadership Team, and teaches a variety of continuing education workshops. She is a USGBC LEED Faculty member and adjunct professor for Collin County College’s Green Interior Design program.

The proceeds from this event benefit the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Education Fund which offers grants to Interior Design students within Texas and Oklahoma. Each year the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter gives out four, $3000 scholarships to IIDA Student members within Texas

and Oklahoma. In attendance at IIDA Leaders Breakfast were just a few of the recipients of these funds, Leslie Rios, Assoc. IIDA, Christina Donaldson, IIDA, Randy Malone, IIDA and Steven Walsh.

The Leaders Breakfast series was established as a platform to expose and elevate the interior design profession within the business community, recognizing that business leaders play a pivotal role in the development of architecture and design within a given region.

Austin’s Annual Revolution Runway: Cross Pollination event was a success, despite the rain! This past September, Austin Design Teams showed off their couture fashion creations inspired by nature’s beauty on the runway at the LBJ Wildflower Center. Over 350 people came out to support IIDA, Dress for Success and TAID.

Zerolandfill Austin was held over two weekends this April and October @ the Workplace Resource Warehouse. With the help of 12-15 volunteers each Saturday and the patience and support of the wonderful Workplace Resource Staff, this year’s ZLF events were a huge success! This year we diverted 40,377 pounds of waste from the landfill. Over 100 people from our community came to gather the materials for school projects, artistic creations, housing projects and crafts. A big thanks to our generous underwriters; Wilsonart and Interface Carpet.

On November 16th the Dallas Fort Worth City Center held it's second annual design competition and silent auction, benefitting Dwell with Dignity and TAID at the New Life Hardwoods Showroom in The Design District. This year the event took on the theme of Lavish "In The City" Design teams were given two weeks to create design vignettes using donated and repurposed items around the theme of a city each item was then auctioned off. Design Teams were paired with a Furniture Underwriter, Material Underwriter (flooring, wall-covering, or fabric) and Accessory Underwriters and were allowed to create what ever they could imagine.

Oklahoma City had a great 2012 year! Our city is still reeling from the success of the OKC Thunder making it to the NBA finals last season, and the fans are amped up for another great season! The energy is high in OKC and our City Center members are

benefiting from the spike of economic growth in the area. We are rounding off 2012 with two more exciting events, a CEU and Project Tour. The CEU luncheon was presented by Knoll: “The Cranbrook & American Modernism”. We had a great turnout, a delicious lunch, and an interactive discussion following the presentation! The upcoming December Project Tour has not been announced yet, but we are expecting a lot of participation! The 2013 year has an exciting forecast with a breakfast CEU, Forum speaker tour with Dennis Krause, and our “Colour and Couture” Fashion show all within the first five months of the year! The IIDA Houston City Center’s Annual fundraiser, Art + Artifacts, was held on October 19th at The Capitol at St. Germain in downtown Houston. The event, chaired by Amanda Meininger and Monica Rohling, was a huge success, raising thousands of dollars to

help IIDA support and its mission. The “City of Lights” themed event centered around a silent auction, as well as a design competition featuring pendant lights designed by Houston designers.

On December 20th, the Houston City Center hosted an entirely new holiday party – the Jingle Bell Wine Walk! Attendees tasted the best of local Texas wines, enjoyed light bites and sounds of the season. Proceeds benefited TAID. Thank you to all those that attended.

IIDA San Antonio’s Membership Drive on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Bahia Azul at The Alley on Bitters. We had a silent auction with great donations and the first 10 people to sign up for a membership also received a grab bag. We had a great turnout of 77 attendees!

Our 2nd Annual Winter Festival was held the evening of November 30th at Big’z Burger Joint. Included with admission were craft booths and games for the kids and families, shopping, a burger bar, beer, wine and large silent auction baskets filled with goodies to help get a head start on holiday shopping. We are also featured a design competition that incorporated 2’ tall decorated artificial Christmas trees. Proceeds and donations, including new sheets, towels, pillows and wash cloths, to donate to Giving Interiors, a non-profit organization that is the only furniture bank in the San Antonio area.

Tulsa City Center recently completed a Wood CEU discussing the transformation of wood from the forest to furniture. On December 6th IIDA Tulsa City Center hosted our Pot Luck Annual Christmas Party with AIA of Eastern OK, Young Architects Forum, and Modern Tulsa. We had a great turn out from both the architect and interior design world. Thank you to Workspace Resource for underwriting our signature cocktail of the evening. Tulsa also collected warm weather attire for the women’s not-for-profit organization “Dress for Success. In January, ISC Surfaces will be hosting a Coefficient of Friction CEU. February is our Student Month where the Tulsa IIDA Council will host a Student Q&A Panel on February 7th as well as opportunities for local firms to mentor students and incourage real world experience. March 7th Tulsa IIDA will host the Chapter IIDA’s annual Forum Event. April is designated as Tulsa’s Volunteer Month where our council and members will have the opportunity to give back to the Tulsa Community. May 17th is our big Bourbon, Blues, & BBQ social event of the year. Tulsa IIDA will be hosting a Bourbon Tasting party for the local Tulsa design community. This should be a great opportunity to connect with various firms, friends, product representatives while educating your tastebuds.

In September, the San Antonio Military Medical Center designed by RTKL received a 2012 Texas Society of Architects Design Award. Chosen from more than 200 entries, the 1 million SF renovation and expansion was the largest project and the only healthcare facility to be honored with such an award.
