DID you enjoy the SALGA Games? Apart from creating a certain amount

of traffic congestion as busloads of local government employees were bussed in to Ashton College to participate or watch, the games created not one iota of interest among the general populace of Ballito as far as I can determine. Nor, by all accounts, did it benefit Brand Ballito in any meaningful way. KwaDukuza Municipality’s decision to use ratepayers’ money earmarked for the upgrading of local beaches to fund this sporting jamboree, defies all logic.

A beach upgrade here is long overdue. In too many instances the E.coli levels are off the scale due to sewerage seepage onto the beaches and into the sea. Public toilet and ablution facilities are woefully inadequate as are lifeguard and security amenities and there is a huge need for better emergency equipment. General signage needs to be upgraded and the beaches need more regular cleaning and maintenance. Brand Ballito needs this if we are to continue to remain an attractive destination for tourism and investment. This would have been addressed to some degree by the roughly ten million rand that had been budgeted for the project and everyone would have benefited from the upgrade. But the money has now been squandered on the local government games with ostensibly nothing left to show for it.

At least this is what I have been led to believe from various connected sources close to the problem. I have not yet received any official communique in this regard.

But this is just one example of local government chicanery – there are many others. We still have no police station, operational municipal buildings, taxi rank and functional tourism association for Brand Ballito. When our Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association DOCRRA is fully operational next year, this will not be allowed to go unchallenged.

The UIP is doing a fabulous job cleaning, greening and securing commercial nodes, but they need us to cover the areas beyond their scope and ambit of authority – together we will make a formidable team to build a better Ballito.

I read with interest how, following his controversial firing of our former Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene, Jacob Zuma explained to a gathering of black businessmen that they could have political power and starve. What they really need is economic power.

Guess who controls the economic power in our region? And if we use it to our advantage, we could enjoy first class service delivery and a truly progressive local economy that will be hugely beneficial to everyone.

But if we remain disengaged, if you are too busy or not interested enough to join DOCRRA, we will continue to be treated with disregard and the kind of official arrogance that casually takes money earmarked for the upgrade of public amenities and spends it on local government games…and we will be even more heavily put upon financially going forward. There is no doubt that we are in for another rates hike shortly and the electricity and water tariffs will follow suit. Do you have a say in this or how the money is being spent? Not at the moment…but when DOCRRA is fully supported, you will have.

Have you joined the association yet? Have you encouraged your friends to join and are you on our social media

network so we can keep you informed about what is happening here?

We don’t expect you to do anything beyond joining the association and receiving your membership number so you can fully access our website and communication network. This will soon also entitle you to discounts from accredited suppliers and other direct benefits, but for now the mission is to get as many people to join us as possible so that we can build the capacity to deliver.

You will find all the information you need to join us on our new website www.docrra.co.za , but if you want to join up in person, we will be manning a table outside the Radio Life & Style Studio at the Lifestyle Centre on Friday 18th December from 9-5 and Saturday 19th December from 9-1 to assist you.

Spread the word. Join DOCRRA now and let’s take back our town.

In Partnership with:

THIS year in particular, we have observed so

many good things happen at Ashton. We have seen students doing an about

face, changing their lives for the better. I have been privileged to witness a number of students who are attending Youth on a Friday evening, some of them Youth Leaders within these groups. Now that is defining oneself and being and inspiration to others. I have felt this year, more so than years before, a determination and a synergy of strength in our school youth to do the right thing. It is like a magnet of positive ions collecting negative ions and pulling them in. This is proof that the

College is getting stronger and stronger. This year has been a magnificent

year and we have a good number of great examples of positive energy.

There was that awesome Variety Concert when our students displayed that X-Factor. Our Drama and Musical Departments have most certainly displayed incredible talent.

Our Outreach and Community Service Clubs have touched many lives and made such a difference. The plight of the Rhino was made so evident that people driving on the M4 thought there was a live Rhino on the field.

On the Sports field, the swimming team were victorious for the very first

time at the D&D Gala; our Hockey girls played in the Premier League; our 1st Rugby team played at Kings Park and had a 12 game winning streak. Our 1st Girls Soccer team were unbeaten for the season. All our Junior Netball teams medalled. Our cricket boys had a cricket season beating teams who ‘thumped’ them in the past.

Our academic arena is, however, our main area of focus.

Our College has always and will always be defined by the CHARACTERS that grace our classrooms.

To Mrs van Buuren, you panel of judges have put you through to the finale. Students and parent, to put into perspective, our end of year final examinations totalled a number of 64 Cambridge Exams, 38 IEB Matric National Senior Certificate exams. Those two sets of exams total 102. Then we commenced the Form 1 to 4 examinations and the reason for our gathering here this evening. We will be celebrating the achievements of those students who have excelled. I would like to congratulate each and every students for your effort. To those who have improved their marks, whether it be form an E to D or a B to A, we commend you and express a genuine congratulations on your improvement.

Students, as we rapidly approach the end of 2015, let’s link arms as Ashtonian brothers and sisters and define who we are.

Let us have the HEART to make a difference, a SPIRIT to do what is

right, the COURAGE to say NO and the CHARACTER to stand-up for what we believe in and what is right. Remember, when you say NO you become the hero.

Let us change the X-Factor to an A-Factor the Ashton Factor. Let 2015 by our defining year when we excelled on all fronts – Academics, Sport & Culture.

Students, (we are what we are) because of you. You as students define our College. You are the life and blood that pulses throught the veins of this school. And those who are experiencing problems or hardships are in need of your assistance, your magnetic HSCC, those positive ions to pull them in to be all that they can be.

This is a little Life Science lesson. To be the pulse of a school, you have to have oxygen. Our dedicated teachers are the ones who feed the oxygen into the blood through the veins that pumps the heart that allows this body called ASHTON to function and thrive. So teachers, on behalf of our students and parents, we congratulate you on being the force behind the success of these amazing students in giving them Heart, Spirit, Character and Courage that flows through the veins of all true Ashtonians.

Thank you for an amazing year.

WITH the completion of the first home in Brooklyn, Ballito is on the brink of establishing a new

community-focused neighbourhood. An initiative by the Slater’s, a family with its roots firmly entrenched in the property market, Brooklyn is the first phase of The Loop precinct – a four-phase project offering a combination of residential, retail and retirement options.

“The completion of the first home, gatehouse and clubhouse at Brooklyn is the catalyst for the entire precinct that we aim to create. Our fundamental vision for The Loop is to offer ‘something for everyone’, regardless of life-stage. With this in mind, developments within the lifestyle precinct will include Brooklyn, The Loop Residence, The Loop Village and Hemingways,” explains John Slater, Director of Painted Black Properties.

Slater came across the agricultural farm land in 2007, when it was sold by the Hullet family. The first phase was sub-divided and developed into an industrial park, and the remainder of the land was zoned for residential and commercial use. In 2013 the contemporary lifestyle precinct called ‘The Loop’ was conceptualised, with ground being broken shortly thereafter to start the services and infrastructure.

Slater continues, “Historically Ballito was known for being a small

interconnected town, where the village really encompassed the heart of the community. With the significant growth in and around Ballito, this characteristic is often overlooked. Brooklyn and, more specifically, The Loop will restore this former charm and ultimately reinvigorate a sense of community”.

Brooklyn is an exclusive and contemporary residential estate comprising of 41 three and four-bedroom homes. Offering the discerning buyer a secure, beautifully appointed, family-oriented estate, residents are able to enjoy a natural outdoor setting and, once The Loop Village is complete, can wind down at a selection of coffee shops and restaurants or have their convenience shopping needs met at the village deli as well as an assortment of other boutique offerings.

With stands ranging from 415m² to 1314m², the estate is characterised by contemporary design, spacious living areas, high ceilings and upmarket finishes. The homes also offer large gardens and outdoor spaces, which is ideal estate for families, both young and old.

“We are extremely confident that Brooklyn and The Loop as a whole will be an absolute success, and we look forward to completing more homes in Brooklyn, and to launching the next phase for The Loop in 2016,” ends Slater.

UMHLANGA’S most exciting action entertainment venue featuring uniquely crafted fun zones for all ages from toddlers to adults at the

Gateway Shopping Centre was officially opened recently and we were there to share in the fun.

The Splashpad, Pump Track, Outdoor Wave and Supertube will no doubt attract record crowds this summer and the new Ella Bella Café is sure to be a popular hangout.

It was fun to be there to experience this new coastal playground where the excitement is tangible and we wish them much success.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

THE Ballito Lifestyle Centre worked with a host of wonderful contributors from the local economy this

year to make a difference in the lives of those who have so little in the region. The following partners assisted with contributing to the Breakthrough Centre that they collectively established in Etete:

•Enforce Security services- donated and installed a new alarm system.•Dr Amanzi Plumbers- serviced and repaired ablutions.•First Aid Training- and donation of first aid boxes- IPSS Medical.

•Supply and Installation of gate motor- Dolphin Coast Alarms•Painting of Builiding – BLC maintenance team.•Donation of Kiddies house- BLC.

It is wonderful to see how much the business community cares for those less fortunate and how much can be done when we come together to make things happen.

The Ballito Lifestyle Centre also hosted a group of deserving children and their carers at Wimpy in November and a super time was had by all with Sangeetha and Vinod turning getting

creative with the face painting. The Ballito Lifestyle Centre

landscaping, maintenance, cleaning

and security staff entertained the kids with song and dance, adding greatly to the fun of the occasion.

TO MAKE THE FRUIT MINCE: place all the ingredients except for the chocolate in a large mixing bowl and combine well. Spoon the mixture into sterilised jars and store in the fridge.

Allow a couple of days for the flavour of the fruit mince to properly develop before using it.

It is preferable to add the chocolate just before placing the fruit mince in the pastry cases, although if you intend to use the fruit mince within a day or so, you could add the chocolate with the other ingredients.

TO MAKE THE PASTRY: Place the flour, orange rind, cinnamon and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Add the butter and pulse until it just starts to resemble breadcrumbs (you can rub the butter into the flour by hand).

Wisk the egg yolk, orange juice and ice-cold water together and ad to the dry ingredients a little at a time until the mixture just comes together as a dough. (The amount of liquid needed will depend on the particular flour used. You may need to add a little water if the dough is still not moist

enough to come together, but don’t overdo the amount of liquid.)

Cover the dough with clingfilm and allow it to rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Grease 2 x 12-cup muffin trays or patty pans with a little flavourless oil.

Roll out the dough to about 2mm thick, then cut out rounds to fit the muffin trays. Spoon in a heaped teaspoonful of the fruit mince. Cut out ‘lids’ for the mince pies (rounds or star shapes) from the dough. Seal the edges of the lids with a little milk. Brush with egg wash and bake for about 20 minutes until golden-brown.

Remove the mince pies from the oven and allow to cool in the tray for a few muibnutes, then turn out onto a cooling rack. Dust with icing sugar and serve.

DECEMBER CONFERENCE SPECIAL

A TWIST on the usual mince pies, these are made using a delicate buttery pastry with just a hint of orange (in fact, they’re just as nice made with puff pastry, so if you’re pushed for time, buy good quality butter-based short or

puff pastry instead). The chocolate in the fruit mince gives them a more luxurious edge. As the fruit mince isn’t swimming in the traditional melted vegetable shortening and is also not cooked, it’s best to store it in the fridge for up to two weeks. But because it’s so moreish, it’s unlikely there’ll be any left over! The fruit mince should be made a few days in advance of the actual pies, so remember to allow yourself sufficient time for the advance preparation.

JUST HOW DO YOU MAKE THE PERFECT CUP AND WHAT IS ALL THIS FUSS.ESPRESSO COFFEE Espresso is a concentrated coffee shot.An espresso is 7 gram of coffee extracted for approxi-mately 28seconds....The perfect espresso should have a lovely beautiful layer of creme covering it...Typically taken black without sugar.

FILTER COFFEE USING A PLUNGER,Freshly Grind beans (within 4 minutes), with the grinder set on coarse.Your water should be just short of boiling, 95°C is optimum. Boiling water will cause bitterness.Use about 60g of coffee per litre of filtered water or a heaped teaspoon per cup...Put a little water over the grinds and stir. Add more water to fill the pot while stirringIt should steep for exactly 3-4 minutes before plunging. More than four minutes= bitter coffee. Less than 3 minutes will not allow flavours to develop.

CAPPUCCINO The favourite of most coffee drinkers.....

The correct way to make a cappuccino is 3 equal parts of coffee (espresso), milk and froth...

The perfect cappuccino is determined by the texture of the milk, it should be smooth, silky blending each of the elements together perfectly.

Small hint - if the water is too hot or the milk is overheated it may burn the coffee

giving it a bitter taste

CAFFE LATTE Caffè latte is a coffee-based drink made primarily from espresso and steamed milk.

It consists of one-third espresso, two-thirds heated milk and about 1cm of foam.

Depending on the skill of the barista, the foam can be poured in such a way to create a picture. Common pictures that appear in lattes are love hearts and ferns

AMERICANO This is a style of coffee prepared by brewing espresso with added hot water giving it a simi-lar but different flavour from filter coffee.

The strength of Americano varies with the number shots of espresso and the amount of water added.

There is a popular belief that the name originated in world war 11 when America would dilute espresso with hot water to approximate the coffee they were used to.

Hint...if you add the espresso to the hot water instead of the hot water to the espresso you won’t disturb the creme on the top of your coffee and your coffee will have a beautiful finish...

MACCHIATO Macchiato is an Italian word, meaning

“marked” or “stained”. ...Caffè macchiato, also known as

“espresso macchiato”, is espresso marked with a little milk

ICED COFFEE The perfect ice coffee recipe for those hot summer daysTo make the perfect Ice coffee follow these simple steps.1. Where possible use cold brewed coffee,How to make cold brewed coffee....Use a plunger, add your ground coffee and cold filtered water not hot, place in fridge overnight. In the morning depress and pour coffee out to create rich strong coffee ready for use...2. Place ice cubes in a cup and pour prepared cold brewed coffee over the ice block,3. Add milk or condensed milk for sweetness

RADIO LIFE & STYLE 88.0FM HAS NOW COMPLETED A FULL YEAR OF NON-STOP MUSIC and information to the greater Ballito community and beyond and to celebrate, presenters gathered at the studio on Thursday evening with family and friends for a little cake (courtesy of Food Matters), sushi (thanks to John Dory’s) and champagne... Here’s to the next year of fun and entertainment – coming to you live from the heart of Ballito!

The Life & Style Team celebrated the end of the FIRST year of Radio and TWELFTH year of Publishing with a dinner at Canelands in Salt Rock. It was great to all be together in a relaxed and happy setting to mark the

occasion in style and to galvanise the team for 2016. It’s going to be a good year and we are getting ready to entertain you!

Collisheen Estate sent Radio Life & Style an amazing

R I N G S I D E B O X I N G G Y M - BALLITO’S TOP FITNESS DESTINATION

THE Ringside Boxing Gym in Ballito was the centre of attention last week as the latest Twelve Week Challenge

winners were announced. For the past three months nearly 100 participants from the greater Ballito community have been put through their paces and closely monitored in a quest to shed excess weight and shape up for a healthier, happier lifestyle.

The results were nothing short of staggering. Many of the participants were barely recognisable in terms of weight

loss and physical appearance and all that stayed the course were unanimous in their praise for the Ringside Boxing Gym team that motivated and inspired them to push through to the end.

The Ringside Boxing Gym is rapidly becoming the most popular cross fit destination in the area because of the outstanding results they achieve. This is where people come to turn their lives around and discover the benefits of focused diet and exercise to get the results they are looking for. It’s not an easy option, but if you are serious about

results, this is where you will get them.

The next Shed That Spread 12 Week Challenge starts towards the end of January 2016.To find out how

HERE’S A GIFT FOR THOSE WITH MORE RANDS THAN SENSE.Rolls-Royce Releases a Limited Edition £26,000 (R607240, 76) Cocktail-Making Hamper

That Costs More Than A BMW

FEELING PARCHED? Want to whip up a

quick cocktail? This hand-built hamper has everything you’ll need to mix up your own drink, but it will cost you more than a BMW 3 Series. That’s because this is the Rolls-Royce of cocktail hampers, created by the luxury car maker themselves.

And if you’re thinking about getting someone a last-minute stocking filler, you better move fast — only 15 will be made. The price: £26,366 or R607240, 76. According to Rolls-Royce, the hamper itself takes eight weeks to make

and is meticulously hand-crafted from American

walnut wood and the same leather with which the manufacturer adorns its car interiors.

And that’s not just any leather; Rolls-Royce won’t use female cowhides because of stretchmarks from pregnancy. And all the bulls have to be sourced from high altitude locations so the skin hasn’t been pierced by mosquito bites.

Before piecing together the set, the Goodwood-based brand consulted with experts from Dorchester Collection’s London Hotels to ensure the hamper was kitted out with everything you’d need to stir-up your own cocktail.

As you might expect from a drinks-making set that costs the same as a deposit on a house, no corners have been cut. Each utensil and implement is bespoke and built by hand and there’s even an automatic light that creates a warm glow designed to replicate that of a luxurious cocktail bar.

Gavin Hartley, head of bespoke design at Rolls-Royce, said: ‘Each motor car that we craft represents a deeply personal expression of individual customer tastes and lifestyles. This extraordinary scope for personalisation extends far beyond the car itself through an Accessories Collection, featuring exceptional objects designed to augment the lifestyles of the marque’s customers.

‘This beautifully executed Cocktail Hamper illustrates the marque’s intimate understanding of the desires of the most discerning patrons of luxury in the world; Rolls-Royce customers. ‘And it sounds like Rolls-Royce has thought of everything.

Should the owner wish to present their guests with canapés, two dishes

find their place in the lower portion of the Hamper, either side of an ice bucket, whilst discreet drawers hold recipe cards and fine cotton napkins.

The upper tier of the Hamper contains tumblers, decanters and a shaker, and smaller utensils — including a muddler finished in American Walnut and a strainer engraved with the ‘RR’ markings — are securely stored on a specially developed moveable rack that can be locked when not in use.

Every item of glassware is made by Theresienthal, Europe’s most revered glassmaker and supplier of many of the Continent’s Royal Courts, and have platinum rims.

Finally, it comes with a glass tray that’s discreetly housed beneath the integrated wooden chopping board, ensuring drinks are presented to guests in consummate Rolls-Royce luxury.

As a finishing touch, a book containing a series of cocktail recipes inspired by the marque’s extraordinary heritage completes the set.

If you want one, you’ll be able to place an order at one of the 130 Rolls-Royce dealers around the world. That’s if it hasn’t sold out, of course
